Fanblogs Open Conference Championship Thread
Ranked Big East and ACC teams have consistently lost this year.
Do they give their voters a chance to look at the AP and USA TODAY rankings to help them make their decisions?
Who below them should be rated higher than them?
How about a vote for who is the most underrated.
I'll cast 2 votes:
Ole' Miss and TCU.
Ball State
Boise State
Michigan State
Pittsburgh
Most underrated:
Oklahoma State
TCU
Florida State
Ole Miss
Boy, Kev, you're burning it up today. Getting all your fanblogging in before you run out of town for Turkey Day?
If I haven't said so, y'all also beat this year's National Champions as well, the Florida Gators (Which coincidentally happens to to be the same National Champion as in '06 and this year, '08). On the other hand, I have said that already; haven't I? Now, y'all probably are DEFINITELY the only team to do all 3 of these things, for sure, for sure (Beating the champs of '06, '07, and '08 during the later season). I'm just referring to a combination of any 3 seasons like this in a row in history, of course. Florida winning this year in '08 just happens to be my personal selection of who I think will take it all.
I actually think TCU is probably better than Utah, definately better than Boise State.
That whole pack from USC to Oregon State, excluding Boise State and Ball State, is pretty close, to where any team can win any week.
But, I think if any of these teams played in the S.E.C. none of them would be undefeated. U.S.C. would probably have another loss or two, besides the one that they had vs. Oregon State. The S.E.C. is not as strong this year for sure. But, in the S.E.C., it's still more physicial than any other conference; and, in the S.E.C., there are many injuries takin' some key players out of the game from game to game all the time (It's an ongoing thing too from week to week too). The S.E.C. teams just beat up on one another period.
Besides Boise State, I also feel that Ball State is overrated; and I agree with your whole last statement , BP, that any of the other teams excluding these 2 teams, of course, that really any team can win any given week, really depending on how fired up they are for the entire 60 minutes (I'm speakin' of emotions, of course) ............ and also for the extra minutes if an overtime is required. Have a great day, BP.
I think Utah is a bit better than Ole' Miss so I think they go 9-3 in the SEC.
But remember:
Ole Miss beat Florida...
You could be right about Ole Miss deserving to be in that pack of teams too; and Utah might be able to go 9-3 (Even in the powerful S.E.C.) as well. You could, very well, be right on both accounts, BP. In fact, I think It would be a very good game between Ole Miss and Utah. Nonetheless, Utah might be a bit better than Ole Miss. But, I still feel that it would be a very good competitive game.
Ole Miss beatin' Florida wasn't a fluke. But ..... dog gone ...... the least one could say about Ole Miss is that they are so inconsistent since they beat Florida ........ and Ole Miss has lost 4 games, I believe, but by something like a total of 19 points, or something like that. But, I'm pretty sure it's by a total of 19 points, though. Later, BP ..........
Nice work, maybe people will start to see Ole Miss means business this year and aren't the Miss of old.
Unfortunately, Utah has their 2nd undefeated season in 5 years and little hope for the BCS CG. Had they done this last year when everyone was losing, it might have been different.
Congrats on a succesful year, Ben. Your Utes turned out to be even better than you expected...
Also, are you really going to dismiss top 25 TCU and BYU as worse than the average BCS team? Lets look at the MWC vs BCS this year:
MWC vs PAC 10: 6-1
MWC vs SEC: 1-0 ( a win over an SEC team did not save Wyoming's Glenn his job )
MWC vs Big 10: 1-0
MWC vs ACC: 0-0
MWC vs Big East: 0-0
MWC vs Big 12: 1-3
MWC vs BCS: 9-4
Utah and Boise are fine programs no doubt. Can they compete, no doubt but, let me ask you a question and try to be honest about your answer. Currently Utah is ranked ahead of Texas Tech, Penn State, Ohio State, Georgia and, Oklahoma State. Would Utah be undefeated playing any of these teams schedule? Is it really fair to these programs who play much tougher games week in and week out? It is a much different world getting your team up for 2-3 games in a season verses 8-9 games. It also afftects injuries and team fatigue. Utah may well be better than these teams but, my opinion is that you suffer 2-4 loses playing any their schedules.
I'm a Georgia fan and no doubt biased but, Georgia's current strength of schedule is 6th and Utah's is 73rd and Boise's is 118th. Georgia has suffered through 18 season-ending injuries this year.
This whole BCS is a mess!
Yeah, but it does get your talking and thinking about Utah and how good or bad they might be. I don't think in any other system you would be giving it any thought at all.
As far as Utah being ranked so high I don't see where I could penalize them. Utah's SOS would have been a lot better had Michigan not sucked so badly. But I would say I don't think they would be undefeated had they played the schedules of the teams you mentioned. But that's not what the rankings are based on for the most part. It's more about what you've done on the field, and not all the subjective opinions of hypothetical games.
TX did beat a higher ranked OK on neutral ground, and, though they lost to a highly, albeit lesser ranked TX Tech, it was at TX Tech. OK's epic win against Tech was in Norman. Consider also, that while it is likely OK would have breezed through TX's early schedule, said schedule didn't include a single 1-AA team; not so with OK's schedule..
Which brings me to the overall strength of schedule. Currently, the teams OK has played have a combined won/loss record of 66-58; likely there will be 4 wins & 4 losses added to each column, or no net change, by the end of this weekend. TX's schedule has a combined record of 75-46. Although their aggregate may change by as many as +2 in the loss column, that's still a combined record of 79-53.
So, in conclusion, I think it can be said, and reasonably so, even if OK wins in Stillwater, TX should go to the Big 12 Championship to meet MO. This, by the way, is the opinion of someone who's neither an OK nor TX fan. While you may argue my points at length, you can't argue my objectivity.
