Fanblogs.com: 2008 - Week 1 College Football Polls

  • Porcine · 1 year ago
    Hmmm. I don't know Davy.
  • Kevin @ Fanblogs · 1 year ago
The good news is that Georgia no longer has to worry about living up to the pressure of being #1.
  • fosterkeats · 1 year ago
The other good news is that UGA will lose at least 3 games this year, so their anxious fan base will have to wait another year...

    28 and counting...
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
Foster, where do YOU live? Some ramshackle on North avenue? Those Dawgs will have their day. Just be patient...
  • fosterkeats · 1 year ago
Ramshackle??? What is that??? Is that what you call trailers in All Barn???

I actually reside down by the zoo, not in the zoo, but near the zoo...

Those mongrel mutt Dawg fans have been drooling all Summer for something that's NOT gonna happen, their schedule is too nasty & they've been getting patted on the back all Summer.

They'll finish 9-3, trip to the Outback Bowl vs Illinois

Save this post, maybe you'll all learn something about using your brain instead of your heart when writing stuff in this forum...

    FK
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
If you had used your brain, you would have recognized that as sarcasm...

No, at Albarn, we call trailers university housing...
  • fosterkeats · 1 year ago
I was being sarcastic too, my man... And I know all about those student housing trailers, I spent some time there one Summer... nice place...

It was a pink trailer with bubble windows, real classy...

    How's Todd gonna do Saturday???
  • OU_Ron · 1 year ago
    Pink with bubble windows LMAO
  • fosterkeats · 1 year ago
Anyone who is ANYONE at Auburn knows about the pink trailer with bubble windows...
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
I was trailer trash for the last year and a half of my tenure on the Plains. It was $100 a month--hard to beat.

I don't know about Todd. He looked shaky last week and confused. However, he did an excellent job of handing off to the backs, which suits me fine. We will see...
  • GA_Boy · 1 year ago
Not a shocker here. If I was voting right now, I would put USC 1st too. Tons of talent on that team.

    Still I say

    GO DAWGS!
  • blackdawg · 1 year ago
I agree. If we take care of business, we'll get our chance. One game at a time. We don't need any more injuries, though.
  • OU_Ron · 1 year ago
OK, USC looked good, but why did Georgia drop..
  • Porcine · 1 year ago
I guess Georgia losing their DT really hurt.
  • grcunning · 1 year ago
I don't think it really matters. Whoever wins between USC and OSU would have been #1 on the 13th anyway. It probably does take a little bit of pressure off of Ga.
My only problem with these is how few #1 votes OU got.
  • OU_Ron · 1 year ago
We didn't play anyone, maybe after this week !
  • Zac · 1 year ago
If I had to guess, it was due to visiting USC having handily beaten a 9-win BCS team in their house in contrast to GA making a respectable home stand against a FCS team. But for now, that's just a guess.
  • fosterkeats · 1 year ago
UGA took out their starters A LOT earlier than USC... The Dawgs would have won 66-0 if they had played their starters as long as the Trojans...

POLLS THIS EARLY IN THE SEASON ARE DUMB
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
See, I don't know if I subscribe to the notion that some voters have that if you vote a team #1, you don't move them down unless they lose. I think it was pretty impressive for USC to travel to the other coast and beat a BCS team soundly in their house. I'd rank them #1 right now, too.

But after USC plays Ohio State, their difficulty ratings are going to slump a bit, and GA should be able to make up ground if they blow through their SEC schedule.
  • Tommy_Trojan · 1 year ago
    OU_Ron:

The official complaint, or justification by the voters, was a growing backlash about scheduling Division II (or whatever they want to call it now) teams to open a season. They were much more impressed with USC's ability to go out on the road, against a team that had a January bowl game last year, and pound them into nothing. We've all been babbling about this forever anyway.
My only question is: don't the voters even know what the schedules are for the teams that they are voting for? And, if they did, why would they wait until the 2nd week to take out their ire on Georgia and Ohio State? You know, it's more likely that these same knuckleheads realize that USC is gonna be good - no matter how many guys go to the NFL. They were probably wondering if the top rated QB of his class (Mark Sanchez) was gonna be any good. They'll probably want to scratch their collective pee-brains when Terrell Pryor takes over at Ohio State also. Gee, it's real hard to figure out. I wouldn't worry too much about it - as there is gonna be alot of bumps for everyone along the way.

For those that don't know, here's an easier way to check the AP ballots (than the AP site):

  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
#22 in one poll and #26 in the other. What is this based off of? Clearly those voters didn't watch the game Saturday night.
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
Are you saying they are too high or too low?

I think East Carolina is a little lower than they should be because the voters expect them to lose next week.
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
    WAY too high.

Our friend Taylor Zarzour moved the Buckeyes all the way up to 9th place, behind Wisconsin and Penn State...woohoo!!
And he finally gave Auburn some love at 22nd. Maybe the death threats got to him.

  • Rusty Shackleford · 1 year ago
I used to be against preseason polls because of how Auburn was screwed in 04, but now i see that it really doesn't matter. If any team goes undefeated in the SEC nowdays they've got an automatic bid the National Champ. game no doubt. Back 3 years ago when i was on this website more there was open debate about who the best conference was at the time, but now it's long gone. The SEC is more than dominant. But... There is one thing left to do before the SEC really claims the Football Crown in my book. We need an SEC team to play and beat USC in a bowl. Hey you Pac-10 wish you were's--- You better hope USC doesn't make it the national championship because I have a gut feeling that we're going to put a team there, and I'm sure none of you want to see your King fall.

    War Eagle, and S-E-C
  • PrinceMarko · 1 year ago
Someone forgot to give UCLA the memo that any SEC team has a God given right to win football games.
  • Zac · 1 year ago
Ah, too true, but do MWC teams???
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
For a preview of the BCS polls look here.

Utah is #20 here, and Georgia is below Florida at #4.
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
Come on, Ben. You know the BCS poll doesn't appear for another 2 months. That's someone's interpretation of the BCS poll...

    Utah should be #16, BTW...
  • PrinceMarko · 1 year ago
Utah and USF should switch spots. Michigan should be #25 after they start Michael Phelps for QB. How can you go wrong with Michael Phelps?
  • Zac · 1 year ago
Personnally, I think Threet has tons of potential. He didn't look at all bad there toward the end.
  • PrinceMarko · 1 year ago
Yes he does... but I'd rather have Michael Phelps... I mean he won 8 gold medals.
  • gatorhippy · 1 year ago
I'm pretty sure the only medals they give out for football on any level is at the YMCA...

  • Mr2Bits · 1 year ago
Glad to see the pollsters have started making the moves for USC and OSU to be 1/2 for their bash next weekend in LA.

Just wait for OSU to move into the #2 spot this week., this will give ESPN a hard on!
  • PrinceMarko · 1 year ago
Thats because they are the number 1 and 2 team out there so far.

Georgia is overrated and Florida has no defense and an injured Percy Harvin. LSU lost too much talent and Tennessee lost to UCLA... Sorry, there will be no SEC 1, 2, 3 and 4 in the rankings. The sky is falling for the SEC.
  • gatorhippy · 1 year ago
The sky is falling for the SEC...

Meanwhile, it's apparently thudded to the ground in the B-10 with back to back BCS CG routs and opening day losses two years in a row for one of their cornerstone programs...
  • grcunning · 1 year ago
hey hippy, give the guy a break
He's a Michigan fan, he needs a mulligan
  • Zac · 1 year ago
He needs a team with a new HC. Oh, did I say that?
  • JB · 1 year ago
LSU lost lots of talent and still manhandled the supposedly-challenging App St......hmmmmm does that say anything about the B11?
  • Mr2Bits · 1 year ago
Ohh I love college football. Such delusion fans everywhere especially from the Big 10.

My post never positioned any SEC teams deserving 1,2,3,4 but simply stated the predictability of the pollsters and what they are looking for next weekend.

What will OSU's excuse be when they get pumeled by USC then drop on to Wisconsin,Penn State or Illinois. The only thing they will be left with are their tears to rub one out with when they don't have to emberrace themselves in another NC game.

You my friend also have no fight in this as the big M will be lucky to even find a bowl. I'd reccomend you do yourself a favor and not bash other teams before you become the next IrishJT and find your self the door.
  • PrinceMarko · 1 year ago
Wow, censorship. Nice to see you Gators can handle criticism. At least i know Michigan has no chance any significant wins this year unless we put Michael Phelps at QB.

I'm not bashing other teams, I'm just voicing my opinion on their play last week. Just because you Florida fans cant handle losing to non SEC teams, its not my fault.
  • grcunning · 1 year ago
Most true B10 fans aren't really that delusional at all. We realize that top to bottom the SEC holds the lead for now.(Just like FSU and Miami did for a while)
What seems pretty delusional to me is fans that think that because last year they beat a team that was picked to finish 4th in the Big 10, that they don't even have to play hard, just show up this year.
You know what, check out the Tenn blogs...before the game this weekend, they were all saying the same thing, "UCLA sucked last year, so we can beat them with our eyes closed". Real smart they were.

And mighty Georgia gives up 21 points at home to Ga Southern???? Ooohhhh, the rest of the college football world is really scared.

Just remember, last year is just that, last year

IMHO, this year USC, OU, and OSU all have better teams than anyone in the SEC. You may have a great 5th, 6th, and 7th team in your conference, but that doesn't mean you can breeze to another championship

Keep living in the past, and the "Vest" will getcha...hehehe
  • Tommy_Trojan · 1 year ago
Wow! Another Michigan-Florida shootout! Fantastic! Really, Michigan beats Florida and then goes and tears apart their whole program? I'm still scratchin' my head. What are these people thinking?
I think that Florida has got to be #2 or #1 - doesn't matter if they even line up on defense. They could play the water boy and ten marching band members over there and still win games. Speed kills. And, I think, that Florida has even more speed than Southern Cal has. Florida is gonna be mighty tough to beat this year.
  • GeauxTigers0107 · 1 year ago
I agree Tommy but so is USC. Their team speed is getting better and better. Not that is was ever slow, mind you. And with USC pulling guys from down here (SEC country, if you will), it's only gonna get faster....see: Joe McKnight. And from what I understand, he's not the fastest on your team.

Doesn't matter who they put #1 this early. As mentioned in a previous post, whoever wins the USC v. OSU matchup will most assuredly be ranked #1....and deservedly so.

I'd almost rather hang back in the #6 or 7 spot for a few weeks and peak late. LSU being ranked #1 on two different occasions last year created alot of anxiety amongst the players, as it does with most teams, because the only place to go is down. I would prefer reaching the top spot with a game or two left at the most.

    Geaux Tigers
    Geaux SEC
  • grcunning · 1 year ago
I totally agree on the hanging back thing. I really don't see anyone running the table this year, Except possibly USC if they beat OSU. Stay out of the limelight, keep winning games, and the rest will work itself out.
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
I'm hoping for a BCS melt down with all BCS teams ending with 2 or more loses, like last year.
  • Tommy_Trojan · 1 year ago
    GT0107:

Yeh, I'm not real thrilled to be placed at #1 going into that Ohio State game either. Would have rather been at #3. All this early season ranking crap means nothing anyway. Like you said: LSU would be in great shape to just hang back, win the west, and then take the SEC championship game. That's an advantage that any SEC has. Basically, looking at this year, whoever comes out of that conference gets a shot. It's tougher for USC this year - really. Because the Big 12 looks to have some tremendous teams also. It'll be real tough, at the end, to leave any Big 12 conference winner out - just to finally get that USC vs SEC champion game. But, they'll probably do it because that's what everybody will want to see. Another thing that will hurt the Big 12 is that Oklahoma lost to both LSU and USC the last time they got their shot. And, that is not to mention Oklahoma's other two losses to Boise State and West Virginia. The only way the Big 12 gets in, provided that USC does not stumble this time, is that if Texas has a monster year and rolls over everyone. Based on their 2005 win over Southern Cal, that could sway some voters, and you couldn't hold them accountable for Oklahoma's poor bowl showings.
  • 1Tomcat · 1 year ago
Tommie Seems way too early to be discussing the MNC games however if your a USC fan perhaps not.

Im not so convinced UGA should have been #1 to start with. We don't know at this point should be. However...being a big fan, I actually watched the pay-per-view game versus GA Southern unlike (probably) %95 of the voters and yall included. And I dont care about the rankings but I am tired of our final score being compared with USC and OSU's games. The first drive of the SECOND QUARTER was led by the 2nd string QB. The 3rd stringer got decent playing time. The defense which gave up an "unbelieveable" 21 points was led by 2nd, 3rd string, and guys we've never heard of. (again...I'm pretty familiar with our players) At 38-0 coach said enough. Its frustrating b/c it doesnt inpress the voters like as much as it does to leave sanchez in until the 4th or until Beanie gets hurt. However with the upcoming schedule, it might just be the wiser move. Just win and let the voters figure it out.
Again...my point is not to argue the equality or superiority of UGA, but to at least give an accurate and informed perspective. How many of yall actually watched it?
  • UGARover · 1 year ago

I'm not going to rehash the 21 point thing, that was one of my "I'm in a bad mood" posts.

I will say one thing, however. OSU didn't play their starters until Beanie got hurt. In fact, all 3 QB's, and the entire 2nd string offense played(and scored) in the first quarter.I doubt that any team in the country played more players. Tress just let Beanie back in to get his 100.
  • UGARover · 1 year ago
Interesting to know. As yall didnt see us, we didnt see you. Guess that just further supports that the voters are somewhat incapable of knowing anything at this point in the season. Funny thing is we would whine and moan without polls to argue over right now huh?
  • grcunning · 1 year ago
    Exactly..
We talked about nothing for 8 months, at least now we have something to bitch about.
I don't think we learn a whole lot from these tune up games anyway. In a couple of weeks it will get much better.
  • Tommy_Trojan · 1 year ago
    GT0107:

Here's what I want to know: where is all this Trojan love coming from? Even last year - we couldn't get any respect anywhere. It seems as if the whole blog doesn't hate the Trojans as much this year for some strange reason.
After that loss to Texas in 05' it was just terrible. The Trojans just sucked. So Cal got behind Oregon State by about 31-3 and ended up losing the game 34-31 - and the crowd went wild. But, that was the game that John David grew up in. He almost pulled out that game single-handed. Even after that loss USC was still in a position to "play in the game" in 06'. But, UCLA played a magnificent defensive game and held USC to only nine points. Still, Southern Cal was at the six yard line when the UCLA linebacker made a tremendous play to grab that interception and win the game for UCLA, 13-9. And, the crowd went hysterical! Southern Cal then went out and demolished a Michigan team that had only lost to Ohio State by three points in their previous game. Florida would go on and smash that same Ohio State team for the BCS Championship.
In 07', Booty breaks his finger in the Stanford game (throws four picks), and Stanford pulls off the miracle win with only seconds left in the game. The worst coaching decision in the Carroll tenure costs USC the game. If Sanchez comes into this game - this loss never happens. And, the crowd goes wild! Later on, facing an Oregon team (arguably the best in the country at the time), Sanchez throws a pick while driving for the game tying score very late in the game. Oregon wins the game by seven points (the worst loss in seven years). And, the crowd goes ballistic! USC would go on to pulverize an Illinois squad that had just beaten Ohio State. Ohio State would go on to be pummeled by LSU in the BCS Championship game.
Now, Southern Cal had entered 07' as the #1 team in the country, and everybody hated the Trojan's. Now, Southern Cal is ranked #1 again in 08' - and the hatred does not seem as severe. What has happened here? Was it simply that they mashed two Big 10 teams that had given Ohio State fits? Did the SEC'ers understand that USC was maybe on par with the Florida's and LSU's? Clue me in here - because I can't quite get my head around this.
  • Lennie Collins · 1 year ago
If Sanchez comes into this game-this loss never happens. Shoulda, coulda, woulda. The fact is that the Trojans lost to the Cardinal! It is done and over. Tommy Trojan I don't dislike USC and I don't think anyone on here does. I think that USC get too much praise like the SEC and fans of the game get tired of hearing it. They beat Virginia down but remember this is the same Virginia that lost to Wyoming last year and if I recall Virginia has not been good since the Barber twins left!

actually it makes me want to throw up...but i hate OSU more
  • grcunning · 1 year ago
I think it is because of a few reasons:
    1) USC is a very very good team .

    2) More importantly, most people north of the Mason-Dixon line and West of the Mississippi are completely sick and tired of hearing that the SEC is so good that they don't just win games, they heal the sick and raise the dead. I think what they should do is have Tebow go into the stands at halftime so that the average folks can touch his robe.

    3) When it comes to USC, the SEC fanboys can't scream "last year!, last year!, last year!" The fans kind of hope that USC is the team that can slay the "Mighty Dragon".
  • Tommy_Trojan · 1 year ago
    grcunning:

And, if we can get by you guys, rest assured that will happen. Make no mistake about that. There isn't any 05' Texas team playing down there this year. As fast as Tim Tebow seems to be - he isn't anywhere near as fast as anybody on our defense - that includes the DT's.
  • OU_Fan · 1 year ago
Tommy Trojan, I think its hard to say but I still hate(ok dislike) the ground that USC walks on. But obviously, the USC love fest got reignited when the Trojans demolished the Cavaliers. Also, everyone had doubts about the Trojans this season due to all of their non-returning starters but that victory at Virginia obviously changed their minds. And I'm sure I'm stating things you already know. BOOMER!

All right! Now I can feel the hate. Lenny must not have understood the question. There was not a question that USC lost to Stanford. We all know that they did. I never said that it made any difference anyway. The question was why all "the man-love" for the Trojans? And, I'm not impressed with any win over Virginia. I wouldn't care if it was by 100 points. All I know is that I made a killing on that one. Twenty point spread? You kiddin' me? Wasn't even a game. We'll see if the Trojans got anything against Ohio State. That's when the love-fest should have begun - not with a routine stomping of a Virginia. But, I am glad that some of that hate came back. I just wouldn't feel right about my team unless they were truly hated. So, let's knock off all this crap about "respecting the Trojans", and get back to what we're supposed to being doing on this blog - hatin' on each others favorite teams!

Hey, i was just curious to know if anybody could answer a question for me.
When was the last time Auburn has won a National Championchip?
This is for anybody, except for an Aub who has nothing to show for in all these years except 6.
P.S. we had 9, beat that and then talk!
  • WarEagleFan · 1 year ago
Ok I got one for you when was the last time Bama beat their biggest rival in Tuscalossa....................... ok before you blow a blood vessel in that head of yours I'll answer it for you NEVER!!!!!! Now talk
  • TheUofA · 1 year ago
Okay! If you knew anything about Alabama AND auburn, then you would know that we've almost always played each other in Birmingham, at Legion field. Get the fact before speaking, plus don't get mad when you get handle by Southern Miss. Plus the mighty LSU is goin to bend Auburn over.
    P.S. Rolllll Tide
  • WarEagleFan · 1 year ago
Your are right that for most of the series they have played in Birmingham but that still doesn't erase the fact that Bama is 0 and 5 at home against Auburn. Three is century and two last century so yes I know alittle about them both. And seeing how Birmingham was just like a home game for Bama seems to me that they would have a bigger lead in the series then they do. Won't be long until it's the other way around!! WAR EAGLE!!!!!!

LOL! Aight little buddy keep looking through your au glasses. When that day comes( it won't) but when it does then, and only then will i take my MUCK BOOTS off, we will be long gone before any of this happenes. ROLL TIDE, I even want Auburn to win all their games EXCEPT 1. Guess that won't happen either.
