Fanblogs.com: 2008 - Week 4 College Football Polls

  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
5 BCS non AQ conference members in the top 25 of both polls, 6 in the coaches poll, lead by BYU at #11.

Ohio State looks WAY to high. When was the last time Vanderbilt was in the top 25? While I am not going to argue against USC being #1 in the polls the 62 and 56 first place votes is a little ridiculous.
  • Porcine · 1 year ago
I read or heard it was 84'.
  • Cougar_Fan · 1 year ago
Ben Prather, I see we're tied in the Yahoo Pick em game, nice work. Also congrats to the utes pulling it out against AF, keep it up! I want both teams undefeated going into the holy war. And what chances do you give TCU against OU? I know OU has played flawlessly, is there any way that game goes to TCU?
  • OU_Ron · 1 year ago
    No
  • Cougar_Fan · 1 year ago
ha ha! you're probably right!! But watch out TCU is dangerous. I'm pretty confident they'll beat the spread
  • OU_Ron · 1 year ago
I have no doubt that they're good, and can care less about the spread, but I truly believe OU will win by at least two TD's.......BTW, it's a pleasure to talk to a BYU fan that has some sense...Good luck with your remaining games..
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
I give them about a 20% chance. 60% chance of losing a close one. 5-0 vs the PAC 10 is one thing, but without USC on the list of teams beat that doesn't mean so much. This is a chance for the MWC to really turn some heads.
  • badgerballer · 1 year ago
Badgers slip in the AP poll w/o playing. I love when that happens.

Auburn punished too heavily for a very, very tough, competitive loss. A loss (at home) none-the-less, but a loss like that one ought to still to count for enough style points to keep them ahead of Wake and OSU.
  • TigerEducated · 1 year ago
399 total yards of offense out of our backup QB...First ever LSU RB to go for over 100 yards against Auburn at Auburn...Leading rusher in the SEC going in with 131 yards per game, and he comes out with 132?

They rush for 70 yards total, and needed a 58 yarder to get to 250 yards passing, total?

The two biggest plays that lead to scores were busted ones...

We went on the road and held their offense to two touchdowns...

We spotted them 7 points...and we left a FG and probably more on the field...

It was a great game, but we ain't no shrinking violets here in Baton Rouge...

Oh, BTW, Baderballer...Nice game vs. Pat Hill & Fresno State the past two years...I'd try to dominate my OOC opponents before I whined about my poll spot...
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
    Appalachian State
    North TExas
    Tulane
    Troy

Which of these OOC teams is even close to Fresno State?
  • TigerEducated · 1 year ago
Name one team with a better victory on their schedule than Auburn, at Auburn...

Thanks, I'll hang up and listen...
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
Auburn, the team that only put up 3 points against a team GT put 31 on?

Your game was close, USC vs Ohio State was not. I am more impressed with that result, despite the fact I think Ohio State is over rated.
  • Jeff · 1 year ago
The same AUBURN team that scored 3 points against MISS ST that lost to a WAC school. The same MISS ST team that lost 38-7 to GT. Not impressive to me, not at all
  • badgerballer · 1 year ago
    Calm down, young fella. *geez*

LSU played extremely well. There is no debating that point. All I'm saying is that Auburn's loss - speaking strictly in terms of 'style points' - to LSU is a far better loss than OSU's to UCS. In my opinion. I don't see SC as being that much a better team at this point than LSU. But they screwed OSU into the ground. Regardless of stats, Auburn hung around until the final minute. OSU was done in the opening minute. I don't think last night should drop Auburn behind OSU.

    "Before I whined about..."

If, having read my post above, what you take away me whining - then you are reading the words you what to hear, as opposed to those that are actually written. Whining? What whining? Just a fairly neutral observation of a flaw in the polling system, and a flaw that we are all well aware of. Man, get off the Red Bull.
  • Cobia · 1 year ago
I agree Auburn should not be lower than OSU in the rankings.
  • Cobia · 1 year ago
BTW the UW Badgers are my favorite team after Auburn and Miami.
  • AUtigerman · 1 year ago
    TE
    nice win.But....

Im not sure id put it quite the way you did. Your backup qb as you call him is way way better then Hatch. If Hatch dosent go down i dont think you win that game. Lee came in and was your MVP.

After that early pick i dont think Miles was looking to put Lee back in.

    Either way congrats.
  • TigerEducated · 1 year ago
My thought was that we'd protect him through the year, but then by the time the season rolled around, IE-after our game with ya'll-he'd be our starter...

But, he played very poorly in locking on receivers, running a disjointed, discombobulated, and out of sync offense, and was not very good through his 1st two...

I think after he realized he no longer had to worry about getting jerked in favor of Hatch, his streakiness which I've noticed finally settled into a groove...Our receivers found some real holes in the trips formation, which Tubbs alluded to in some comments I just read awhile ago...

Getting a 12 play and an 8 play drive out of your offense in the 3rd quarter and coming away with zero points was the backbreaker for you guys, I think...

Your punter's health also affected the outcome...
  • AUtigerman · 1 year ago
Funny you should mention our punter. We didnt know he wasnt going to play. In fact they said his name as a starter at the game. I didnt think it would hurt usas bad as it did.

Todd is getting better but he should have thrown the ball away rather then hitting a back 10 yards behind the line of scrimmage. That play followed by a sack killed us.

Even in losing i think we looked pretty good. I think your O line just wore our D line down late in the game. And our lack of depth in the secondary showed once our starters got tired.
  • AUtigerman · 1 year ago
    badge

One thing is for sure in the SEC. We will play enough highly ranked teams that this will work itself out.
We still have Georgia and Bama on our schedule. Lsu still has to play Bama,Georgia and Florida so by no means are we out of it. LSU is just driving the bus right now.
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
Kansas is too high. They lost to South Florida.

South Florida is WAY too high. I'd like to just display some scores and you can make your own conclusion.

Central Florida 24 - 31 South Florida (OT)
    Central Florida 7 - 34 Boston College
Central Florida 17 - 0 South Carolina State
    Clemson 54 - 0 South Carolina State

    South Florida 17 - 9 Florida International
    Kansas 40 - 10 Florida International
    Iowa 42 - 0 Florida International
    South Florida 37 - 34 Kansas

Sagarin has South Florida at 34, and Kansas at 38. Someone please fill me in on what, exactly, South Florida has done to deserve a 13/14, and what Kansas has done to deserve an 18th ranking???

South Carolina is getting 3 votes in the AP poll after they STRUGGLED to beat Wofford in Columbia. Have you, outside of the Carolinas and Georgia, even ever heard of Wofford?? Wofford was actually very much in the game until the end of the 4th quarter.

Virginia Tech is not ranked for whatever reason. Sagarin has them at 13. I'm sure that'll sort itself out though.

Let's look at Fresno State. This illustrates exactly why I despise polls being released before the 4th week's games have been completed. Let's look at what Fresno has done. It looks a lot different using the preseason thinking than it does now
    @ Rutgers, Win 24-7
    Wisconsin, Loss 10-13
    @ Toledo, Win (2OT) 55-54

Toledo lost 41-16 to Arizona. Rutgers is 0-3 with a blowout loss to North Carolina, and a loss to Navy. Sagarin has Fresno ranked at 49th by the way. That's a FAR cry from the top 25.

Can we implement a rule requiring an IQ test before these imbeciles are allowed to vote please!?
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
    I'll take the Sagarin rating.

    BYU #7
    Utah #11
    TCU #15
    Boise State #16

    Why use anything else?
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
Jeff Sagarin himself admits that his rankings are skewed early in the season, but you can't have a team ranked 49th and put them in the top 25.
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
His rankings are still "Bayesian" meaning they still use a historical bias to stabilize the results. The teams difference from their historical average indicates the direction the unbiased formula would go.

Otherwise you end up with something like this other BCS formula.
  • Porcine · 1 year ago
    Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk.
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
I am aware of the method he uses. It is not fully accurate until the end of the season, but of course, far more accurate than the AP or Coaches.

Where is that link supposed to go? It sends you back to this page.
  • Porcine · 1 year ago
Without computer polls, you have human polls like the ones at the top of the page.
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
Full of profundity this evening, aren't we?
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
    HERE

This site might be insightful to the current discussion.
  • Porcine · 1 year ago
    I have heard of Wofford.
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
That's not the point. Beating Wofford in a close game does not warrant a team to be in the top 25 in FBS. It probably does in FCS however, but these rankings don't apply to that.
  • Porcine · 1 year ago
    I know.
  • 1Tomcat · 1 year ago
Thanks Joe Now we have TCU, Vanderbilt & Wake in the the Top 25- dont yall love it?
Where is Tulsa? Colo ? OK State ?
Now that we have a few weeks under our belts, perhaps the pollsters have abetter idea of whats what. Miami looked good against A&M and Baylor played hard at UConn.
CFB polls are just speculation until some teams meet up against some decent competition.
    Go Frogs beat OU
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
Oklahoma State will be in next week. I didn't even look to see who they play. It doesn't matter from where they are at.

Tulsa is a sleeper, they will move up and could get some attention with a couple more wins. Not enough though to make up for their SOS. They could end up undefeated and behind a 1 loss MWC team.

Are you kidding with that undefeated team that had to comeback in the 4th to beat Eastern Washington? Ok, i'll give you that they beat a team that nearly lost to Sacramento State.
  • AUtigerman · 1 year ago
Well good game from LSU. I thought we might get this.

I dont think Hatch will ever compare this game to the Harvard Yale game again. He got smacked down best hit of the night.

To bad thats all i have to brag about
  • TigerEducated · 1 year ago
He was actually hit in the back of the head by an errant knee from an Offensive Lineman...One of ours...

He got hit, but the injury/mild concussion was sustained by friendly fire, sir...
  • AUtigerman · 1 year ago
    TE

He got smashed by Powers. I was there happened right in front of me. He got up and couldnt make it to the side lines. I remember cause i heard the pop over the crowd noise.

It was a clean hit too ,but im not going to let you still this little bit of thunder.
  • TigerEducated · 1 year ago
He got hit, but the knee to the back of the head was the blow...He had a mild concussion and they were icing the back of the neck, which was impossible for the secondary guy to hit...

I watched it several times on the replay and via TiVo...
  • AUtigerman · 1 year ago
well i hope hes ok. Kind of makes a good hit scary when someone gets hurt.
  • gatorhippy · 1 year ago
    Friendly fire or not...

Dude had no idea where the hell he was...
  • GeauxTigers0107 · 1 year ago
That's for sure. He looked like he was smack dab in the middle of failing a field sobriety test while trying to walk to the sideline. Eyes crossed, mouth piece falling out....lol. And honestly, I didn't think he really got hit that hard.

Yeah, too bad,AUtigerman, that you don't have an egregious ( and obviously intentional ) chop-block against Glenn Dorsey to brag about...................

From dancing on the "eye of the Tiger" at mid-field, to smoking cigars in the waning minutes of a game, to that chop-block, Auburn continually shows its crass in Tiger Stadium.

Last night was Oh So Sweet !!!!!!
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
So you basically just came out of the woodwork to talk trash to Auburn fans after the game, having not posted here before.

Did I miss something, or were you talking about class and lack thereof somewhere? I probably just didn't read it right.
  • OU_Ron · 1 year ago
I was thinking the same thing, easy to talk trash after a game......
  • TigerEducated · 1 year ago
I think ChineseBandit's from my site, as a matter of fact...We are subscription only, and he hasn't been exposed to many AU fans other than the ones who literally paid this week to talk trash...LOL...

    Go easy on him...
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
Obviously he's from some backwater bayou and was never exposed to that higher learning stuff they have in Red Stick. If you want to vouch for him, TE, that's one thing...

But if not, that's okay, too. Evidently, some Auburn guy must have slept with his girlfriend last year, hence the hostility and lack of class...
  • AUtigerman · 1 year ago
Well turns out the best hit of the night may have helped you win.
Hatch was doing nothing and after that interception earlier i dont think we were going to see much of Lee.

I guess they decided not to do so many intenional chop blocks, I was told that Tubberville told them not to wear there brass knucles either.

They do carry ether and put it on the QB sometimes at the bottom of the pile.

Well at least LSU didnt burn down a barn or the Tiger Tail van or set Toomers corner on fire.

Oh i forgot ,thats already been done. And Tubbs, he lit a cigar.
  • JB · 1 year ago
Serously, having been to the game at AU 2 years ago(were the AU cornerback pulled Dwayne Bowe to the groud ---no call yea that one)........i was soooo happy last night thinking about how miserable all 87000 fans were, walking dejectedly back to thier cars, not knowing what to do...heeheehee
  • TheMayor · 1 year ago
Congratulations to Boise State for beating my Ducks in Eugene. Oregon is down to 4th and 5th string QB's (both true Freshman).

No way the Ducks should be in the Top 25. I admired their comeback but the defense gave up too many big plays.
  • "BC" · 1 year ago
    Auburn weekend re-cap:

    - not a very fun town to begin with
    - no band parties scheduled for after the game
    - LSU fans are the worst in the country

    casualties for hosting LSU fans:
    - 1 auburn fan shot
    - 2 of my friends' cars got their windows busted out
    - 3 of my friends' tires got slashed

i know LSU fans take pride in this but they really do scare me.
i'll tell you what, i wouldnt walk around baton rouge in bama garb unless i had a pistol on my side. and im saying that in all seriousness. i have never, and will never go to an LSU home game because of their disgusting, trashy, and violent fanbase.
    absolutely despicable.
and i know that doesnt apply to all of them, but my god, what other fanbase has 5 year olds telling opposing fans, "f*** you!" (that actually happened).

    - i overestimated LSU
    - i underestimated Auburn.

    - Trey Blackmon and several D-lineman came to the party i was at, and they are HUGE guys.

Oh, don't worry. Ron is always tryin' to find a thrill. You have all the logic required to fend this guy off. Just keep callin' them the way you see it - and he'll eventually give up. What was that line that Ron White always uses.....?

    BC,

I don't believe you for an instant, but I'm glad you aren't coming to Baton Rouge...

I trust you'll just sink into the big leather sofa that Daddy Warbucks bought your wealthy future bride...

Link me to the shooting, first off...

How do you know LSU fans did this tire slashing and window destruction?

Yeah...you just "figured" its LSU, right?

    Post some more hersay....

Talking classy behaviour from your neck of the woods is laughable...

You still haven't ever owned up to "WEEEEEEEEE JUST BEEEEEEEEAT THE HELLLLLLLLL OUT OF YOU!!!!!!!!!"

    Have you?

Funny that all of the Auburn fans I've talked to haven't mentioned a SINGLE INSTANCE of this stuff...Just the one guy that hates LSU...Whose now proxy-hating LSU using his own alleged worst enemies...
  • AUtigerman · 1 year ago
I actually tailgated with 4 LSU fans. They were class acts. One of them made enough Gumbo to feed all of us.
I would have slapped my Mama it was so good but she wasnt there.

As with any fan base there are jerks. Comes with the territory of a winning team. Class folks stick around in hard times.
I witnessed a fight after the game and im pretty sure the LSU fan didnt throw the first punch.

Learn to love- not hate- violence is not the answer
Dont pack a gun, learn to acknowledge the fact that jails, hospitals and graveyards are places that you dont want to send anybody including yourself.
I really dont know Baton Rogue never been there, I've been to alot of big cities in this country and others. It's really a sad state of affairs when folks have to arm themselves or dont go to certain places because of their fear of violence. Conduct yourself and your dealings with others with pride and respect . Learn to overlook small infractions and dont judge an entire population on the acts committed by a few-A-holes.
Come on down to Austin Texas in Tide gear you'll be alright- but dont go to Norman OK in burnt orange they will rip off youre nutt sack.

Auburn's still not a top 15 team, but we have 8 more weeks to make the cut...

I gotta think that we're better than Tennessee, though...

  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
Okay, I was finally able to watch the broadcast this evening, which generally fills in a lot of details you can't see during the game. I didn't know that Lee had come in earlier in the game and was actually the one who threw the pick that went for the TD. I thought that was all Hatch. When Hatch got his bell rung, Lee came in and completed the 3rd and 4. Then threw the TD on 3rd and 10, right before getting smashed.

The game momentum changer was our possession immediatly before that when we got knocked out of field goal range. That 3 points would have been huge.

Man, I love going to college football games. Nothing can match that excitment, but nothing can match the drudgery of the two hour drive back to the ATL after a loss.

What was that you said? Drooling into the pillow of despair? Pretty close, bro. Pretty close...

Good point, now if only we could adjust the Auto-bid process for BCS bowls...
  • Ramblin' Gator · 1 year ago
    Also a good point.

The ACC looked a little better this weekend, going 6-0 OOC. The bad news is the ACC will spend the rest of the season trying to dig their reputation out of a ditch after a pathetic start.

Unrelated question: I'm going to be in SLC most of next week - are there any good sports bars near the convention center?
  • Cougar_Fan · 1 year ago
Well, I've always gone to Skybox at the gateway mall, but I haven't exactly tried many other places around the convention center. There's a sweet place by University of Utah called The Pie! Its worth going out of your way to eat there, but isn't designed solely as a sports bar (I think they reserve one day a week to live music). Ben might know better than me, I'm not from Utah and don't know SLC as well as someone who goes to the school up north.
  • Ramblin' Gator · 1 year ago
    Thanks!
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
Look for "private clubs". That is Utahn for Bar. I remember one called Port o Call right downtown, but that was 10 years ago when I lived out there. They had full bars, hundreds of TV's, three floors, pool, darts, smoking and every sports pack their is.

Don't worry to much about the membership. Go in looking confused and say loudly to the greater you are from out of town and want to watch a game. If you are polite and stall you will get a sponsorship from one of the regular patrons (allowing you in as a guest). Good etiquette would buy them a beer.

Best Pizza I ever had is at the Pie. Half a block west of the U, right on the fault line under ground. Good food but they only have a tv or two. Not for game night but HIGHLY recommended, unless you have heart disease.

Now you got me all nostalgic...

Even though it can't be verified, if it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck... guess what? Its a duck.

My own personal experience last season at the Ole Miss-LSU game in Oxford:

I had a thing of BBQ nachoes, was goin' to town on them right before the band came out on the field. They were about to start playing the alma mater and national anthem, and I was going to set down my nachoes so I could stand up before it started, and some idiot LSU fan thought it'd be the logical thing to do (surrounded by Ole Miss fans, mind you) to smack me with his hat and tell me to "stand the hell up and show some respect" when I was clearly setting my food and drink aside.
