Fanblogs.com: Are the Fighting Irish BCS-bound?

  • TBD · 1 year ago
Notre Dame wouldn't be eligible with six or seven wins.
  • Kevin @ Fanblogs · 1 year ago
Excellent point. My mind was too foggy this morning. Notre Dame may need NINE wins to be a BCS at-large qualifier. I have an email into a couple people to reconfirm that, but I think the magic number for Notre Dame is nine.
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
To be eligible for a BCS at large bid you must be in the top 14 of the final BCS standings and have nine wins.

Unless they get to the top 8 with less than 9 wins they don't go to a BCS bowl.
  • 4cornerz · 1 year ago
That is why ND should be in the Big East or Big Ten

I am first. Ric Flair is the Greatest.
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
They need two losses to keep them out of the top 14. A 6 or 7 win Notre Dame would not be in a BCS Bowl, but a 9 or 10 win Notre Dame would be.

Funny. ESPN (maybe ESPN U) had one of those polls where they show the US map--like the electoral college map--the question was: "Is ND back"? The ENTIRE map was blue; blue = "No". I guess no one's really convinced yet--not even the Irish fans (or should I say, least of all, the Irish fans).

Re. remainder of schedule: I think ND could quite possibly/easily go 9-4:

    North Carolina---Loss (how is NC not ranked yet?);
    Washington--slam dunk (better be);
    Pitt--Loss. (Maybe USF and WVU were Thursday "Twighlight Zone" games--but both were roadies for Pitt, as is this one v. ND; and Pitt has historically given ND fits);
Boston College--Win. BC has lost a bit, ND IS much improved.
Navy--Win (return to normalcy; last year was just an aberration).
    Syracuse--Slam dunk.
    USC--Loss (no elaboration necessary).

I'd say 9 wins would get ND into the BCS.

Note: those aren't predictions, as much as simply acknowledging a very realistic scenario.

    TG:

I see a real possibility of losses to North Carolina, Pittsburgh and Boston College. Boston College always beats Notre Dame. Washington has too many injuries - or they might have even beaten them. If they even have two losses heading into USC - it'll be over for them. The beatdown in that game - they will not be able to recover from. They could end up at (9-3) - but a big time spanking from Southern Cal knocks them out of the box. On the other hand, if they play well, it'll probably help them somewhat. Either way, I can't see a (9-3) Notre Dame, being BCS worthy. I think that there would be several teams with two or less losses being more deserving.

    TT:

To quote Clint Eastwood in Unforgiven:

"...deserves got nothin' to do with it..."

You may be right about the effects of a USC blowout of Notre Dame vis-a-vis BCS; I still think however, that 9-4 Notre Dame in a nightmare economny is either BCS bound, or next-best bowl bound. Too hard to pass up on that big, loyal and generous a following, especially when the purse strings are being tightened all around. 10-3: forget about it; they're in (btw: they play 13 games, so it's either 9-4 or 10-3).

Re. Boston Catholic: true they've racked up quite a streak against the domers; however, those games are always close. Moreover, last year--when Notre Dame sucked out-loud, with an amplifier--the game was STILL close. Now factor in for the loss of Matt Ryan, and a much improved Irish team--I think they stop the streak this year.

Pitt is more of a coin toss. Wanstache can't coach his way out of a paper bag, but then he has pulled a couple of big time roadies out of his a$$, as alluded to above. There's really no telling which Pitt team shows up, until well into the 2nd quarter. That said, I'm lean'n towards Pitt in this one, for the same reason I think UNC smokes 'em--they're both tough, physical teams, which seem to fare well v. Weis' Irsih (Pitt not quite as much as NC).

I'm gonna' pay very close attention to that UNC game. To me, this is the game that will tell us if ND is for real (i.e.--top 10 calibur), or not. I think they lose handily, but if they win, I'd have to completely re-evaluage where I think this team is.

Final point: if Notre Dame does get BCS invite with 4 loses---I think it's pretty safe to say the ND haters will come out in force--understandably.

    TG:

Well, you certainly have a point about the money and all. Clint Eastwood's line in "the Outlaw Josey Wales" applies more to Notre Dame: "Dyin' aint much of a livin', boy"! I agree then if Notre Dame has thirteen games and ends up 10-3. Does seem like we've pasted that team about six times in a row, and every time they even end up with a winning record, they're thrown to the lions in some BCS bowl game. I keep forgetting about that conspiracy. I just a soon let them keep losing forever and not have to even think about. A 3-9 season was just fine with me. Hope there are many more.
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
Notre Dame is currently 4-1. With your scenario they go 4-3 for the rest and 8-4 for the regular season. This will not get them into a BCS bowl. They can only lose 2 more games. Even then, they might not have the clout they used to with the voters.
  • TampaGator · 1 year ago
You are correct; ND only plays 12 games; thought it was 13.

Funny, getting called out for the same thing I called someone else (TT) on!

    Num-num humble pie!

So I'll agree with you and Tommie on second point; 8-4 will NOT do the trick; 9-3 on the other hand, will fall in the gray area--in other words, it will depend on how they get to 9-3, vis-a-vis the remainder of the field (e.g.--a close game with USC, coupled with 1-2 losses by most of the teams ahead of them, gets them in).

ND is not going BCS bowling. ND is going to the Gator Bowl with 8 wins Either UConn, USF or Pitt will get snub if they finished number 2 in the Big East with a better record than ND.
  • Cougar_Fan · 1 year ago
ha! UNC will bring them back down to earth this weekend!
  • Bama_DevilDog · 1 year ago
Notre Dame, ha! They should just send them the trophey before the season starts.
  • fosterkeats · 1 year ago
They win 6-8, they get to spend New Year's in Jacksonville... that's no reward, lol...

9-10 wins puts them in one of the BCS games, what a crock, playing their shitty schedule...
  • FSU_FAN · 1 year ago
Um I think in some ways thier schedule is crappier then they thought (Michigan) and better then they thought (UNC). I won't mind them getting a BCS bid if they upset the Trojans and beat Washington. Whoever gets them should also have to take whatever BCS non_AQ that makes it to the poll. It should at least make it a good game. Notre Dame vs. Boise or Ball State... I think BYU would trash Notre Dame though this year.
  • The_DMD · 1 year ago
Notre Dame will not make a BCS bowl, it won't even be close.

They are going to lose to UNC and say good bye to any chance they had. In fact Notre Dame can't even claim they beat a good team this season...

I think it's fair to say they will easily make a bowl, but no way they are even talked about as a BCS team after the UNC game.
  • ed · 1 year ago
ND has be looking pretty decent...well a lot better then last year. I think their season turned around when Weis got taken out and busted up his knee, maybe if he has his other knee taken out they'll get to a BCS at large. That or the top 20 teams now have to lose a game or two.

Notre Dame is a young team that is steadily improving. Also, they have many good recruits coming in. Beat them while you can. Normalcy will soon return, including beating USC with regularity.

is it true Notre Dame vs Ball State 2009 and 2010 both home games one in South bend and the second at Lucas oil stadium?
  • Jack Gipson · 1 year ago
Lets face it guys (and gals) ND has a big fan draw. It's about money. It's not that the sports media likes more thansay New mexico State. ND is a big big draw. So, they always get special attention.
I'm not a fan at all, but when they are on TV and there's no other good games on. I'll watch
