Fanblogs.com: At least the Orange will look good losing

  • grcunning · 1 year ago
finally, a new uniform design that actually looks pretty darn good...
I doubt it will help their football though
  • dithridge · 1 year ago
these changes are an upgrade, but i am just getting tired of so many schools changing uniforms so often.

With the exception of Tennessee and Viginia Tech most of these programs are going to be average or below average teams. I never understood why Tennessee got rid of or don't like the orange pants. I will say this to all programs if you don't like your school colors...change 'em! Do add black to try to make it or them (colors) look good!

I've got to agree these unis look pretty tight. It's as shame that the Hokies couldn't keep the special white jerseys we're using for the home opener (similar to the new 'Cuse jersey). Then again we're no Ga(ck) Tech. I mean what in the heck is going on there!

Get rid of the gray facemasks for blue ones and why not go to orange jerseys with white numbers; blue trim with white pants AND white jerseys with orange numbers; blue trim with those orange pants! They should have more orange than blue since they called themselves the Orange, doggone! Then they will truely co-ordinate, DOG! But I am glad they went classic then Yuck Wild like Georgia Tech!

I agree, and I think they should keep the uniforms traditional-looking like this. Fantastic job.
  • Ramblin' Gator · 1 year ago
Good for them. Syracuse has needed a pick-me-up ever since their mascot was emasculated from "Orange Men" to "The Orange".
  • shiguy · 1 year ago
hahaha very true! that would have sucked going to school and have your school's mascot name changed. what next the west virginia mountainets hahaha.

I graduated from Marquette this past spring. So, yes, I had to go through the 24 hours of being the Marquette Gold . . . a living nightmare.
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
I really have absolutely no idea what you're talking about there, but I'd like to. Please explain.

Long story short: Marquette had long been the Warriors until 1992 when the University unexpectedly changed the name to Golden Eagles as a result of continual criticism by the local native Americans - saying the Warrior name and logo were offensive. Most students and especially alumni were disgusted by the change claiming a loss of identification with the school and its athletics. In 2005, in response to the ongoing protest of this issue, the Board of Trustees changed the name from the Marquette Golden Eagles to the Marquette Gold. Massive protests broke out on campus and many wealthy alumni then claimed to stop donating money because of the decision. That day, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel held an online vote where over 90% were unhappy with the “Gold”. To clean up the mess, the Board of Trustees held an emergency meeting. They constructed an online poll to vote for the nickname that would be voted by students, faculty, alumni, and anyone directly associated with the Marquette community. The poll was a two stage in which the first allowed write-ins but excluded "offensive" names such as "Warriors" and "Jumpin' Jesuits," both which had gained voting popularity around campus. The poll eventually narrowed down to Hilltoppers (Marquette's original nickname) and Golden Eagles. As a result of the poll, the official nickname remains as Golden Eagles.

You definitely should have gone with the Jumpin' Jesuits.

    Interesting story though. Thanks.

Jumpin Jesuits goes nicely with the Penn Fightin' Quakers.

It's funny and sad at the same time. Tradition is slowly being eroded by political correctness throughout college sports.

One of my favorite stories on this subject was how the lyrics of the song "Men of Dartmouth" was altered to be "Alma Mater" as it was more inclusive and had the same number of syllables. After the announcement of the change, the school was embarassed to admit that "Alma Mater" means "nurturing mother" in Latin. Inclusive? Yes, though distinctly feminine.

I periodically hear similar rumors regarding the songs "Ramblin' Wreck from Georgia Tech" which includes allegedly sexist descriptions of what one's sons would do on the campus juxtaposed with what one's daughters would do there. Also, "We are the Boys from Old Florida" gets similar attention from time to time.

On the other hand, I must admit to being a big fan of the team that is emblematic of political correctness folded back on itself - the "Fightin' Whities":

That is wonderful on so many levels.

Don't forget that FSU was almost the "Crackers". It came down to a final vote on the mascot!
  • Ramblin' Gator · 1 year ago
Too funny! I did not know that.

My family has lived in the south long enough (pre-civil war era) to remember a time when "cracker" was not pejorative (not me personally, but I remember debating my father who insisted that the term was not intended to be derogatory). I've had similar debates with realtors who have shown me "cracker homes", which generally include a wrap-around porch and a "tin roof" - NOT RUSTED!!

Good thing FSU didn't go that route. "Seminoles" is one of the best handles going and the school has the support of the only native American tribe that has yet to surrender to the US government.

For a related, side topic, how does a team like Syracuse tail-spin so low in the world of college football? I know it's cold up there so it sometimes makes recruiting difficult. But can't Robinson pull some quality talent from his previous position in the state of Texas? I feel so bad watching the Orange offense. It always seems like the real offense disappeared and a high school team had to replace them.
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
Maybe it's because Rutgers is now taking those Jersey and NYC kids that Syracuse used to always get. I don't know if that's the case, but that's my guess.
  • jake · 1 year ago
Robinson is just the wrong guy. The team posted a 1-11 record (worst in SU history) after Pasqualli was fired which was far worse than any of Pasqualli's seasons. I think they were 2-10 last year.
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
I can't argue with that. It certainly seems that neither Robinson or Pasquali are the right guy for the job. That could actually be what opened the door for Schiano to grab some quality recruits and drastically improve that Scarlet Knights program.

Who knows? I have never liked Syracuse so I actually enjoy the fact that they are terrible. When they changed the name to simply the Orange a few years back, one of their school representatives said in an interview that they were the only school in major college sports to wear predominantly orange. I guess he has never seen Clemson, or Illinois play sports. Ever since then, I have liked them even less.

    * Before anyone jumps on me for this, I fully realize that there are other schools that wear orange, and some wear quite a bit of it. However, Clemson and Illinois both wear orange head to toe on occasion, and the others do not.

Actually Pasqualoni (just figured out the correct spelling) didn't do too bad in his time. In most of his seasons SU was in the top 25. They only had 1 losing season under him. He won the Fiesta Bowl with SU over Colorado in 1992, and beat down a certain opponent **cough cough** 41-0 in the 1995 Gator Bowl.

Quite a step down for SU if you ask me. I guess you never know what you have until you fire him.
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
Yeah, I guess that beat down by Georgia Tech in the bowl game was too much for the fans to handle. It seems like they just got used to winning and then got too greedy.

We were severely overmatched in that game. Because of our ridiculously strong history of bringing tons and tons of fans to bowl games, we get picked over teams that are actually better than us (just ask Boston College, or NC State's new coach) to go to bowls. Unfortunately it results in a mismatch at times. The same thing happened when we faced Texas Tech in the Tangerine Bowl a few years ago.

    Love the helmet.....

I agree; one of the better designs I've seen. What amazes me is how much like winners they look, as opposed to the results they've had over the past 4 seasons. It would be nice to see them turn it around.
