Fanblogs.com: Attendance down, but several bowls setting records

  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 11 months ago
I'm telling you, the Chicken Bowl in Atlanta ought to seriously consider moving it to New Year's Day instead of Eve--and that's NOT so we can watch them prop up Dick Clark's corpse at midnight on ABC...

I forgot how entertaining taking public transit down to the GA Dome can be--especially when you have one train and one half-mile long escalator shot out from under you...
  • Regan · 11 months ago
    I SECOND THIS.

The CFABowl is a fantastic venue, and the mentality is great - the game ends just in time for a NYE in the bars of Downtown Atlanta.

Except when it goes into overtime and you spend the new year jammed into a MARTA no fewer than 100 people, half of whom are more happy than the other half.

At the very least don't cut off the alcohol at halftime so the buzz isn't interrputed! :)

I was at the Chic-Fil-A Bowl, so I get to reply to this message with my messages to all conferences and teams:

USC- I have said you were overrated all year long, and I apologize. You guys looked AWESOME last week, if I were in the SEC or the ACC I would not want to play you.

LSU, everyone else in the SEC: wow. Ole Miss and LSU showed you aren't just hype.

Utah: I don't know how anyone can look at you in the face and not give you a national championship. I am embarrassed for the sport, embarrassed for the polls, and embarrassed to be an American. Shame on all of us. Utah, you ran the tables.

Let me conclude by telling the BCS: You are all a bunch of frauds, and you are criminals. I hope all of you are sued into oblivion. You guys are so dumb you have no idea how much we would pay to see a playoff.
  • FSU_Ben · 11 months ago
Well at least a part of the BCS doesn't care about the money from a playoff as it kills thier bowls, unless you incoporate it into the bowls which is just retarded.
  • thebuckstopshere · 11 months ago
Good game, it was Ohio States game to lose and that's more than can be said about some of the recent past performances. All and all, I think they made there statement that they can compete with one of the nations elite. Congratulations Texas, hope to see you next year. And you can bet on it now Ohio St. will be playing for it all in one year's time.

Did they ever say what happen to Wells?

Concussion. I'm now thinking he'll come back next year, as unlikely as that sounds...
  • SoonerTaft · 11 months ago
ESPN might as well be called Gator TV! This is ridiculous how much they are kissing Florida's a$$. What about the comments Florida's linebacker has been saying about the Sooners all week? That's not on ESPN's front page... And something else that is funny is how colt mccoy and mack brown are saying that nobody could beat them right now and they should be number one??!! I'm sorry horns but you were so close to losing. Come on Sooners get ready because the Gators deserve a beating and ESPN needs a wake up call.

  • Wardboy3 · 11 months ago
As for ESPN being called GATOR TV it will only get worse since ESPN signed on to carry SEC games & ESPN will now carry the BCS games.

They have to promte the SEC teams as much as possible so they can get their moneys worth.
  • Tom_Blogical · 11 months ago
Since there is no Open Thread, I'll say it here.

    Beating. Head. Against. The. Wall.

Bottom line. FAIL. AGAIN. That's all anyone will ever remember.
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 11 months ago
    Thought you guys had them...

Poor coverage and crappy tackling on that last play gave that one away...

I've said it once, and I'll say it again. I wish my team had been to 3 straight BCS bowls, including 2 MNC CGs...
  • Tom_Blogical · 11 months ago
"Poor coverage and crappy tackling on that last play gave that one away..."

As I said to GeauxTigers0107. I'm not even blaming Anderson Russell on that play, because Heacock had no business not defending the goal line in that situation with 20 seconds left and a 4 point lead.

I have to tell you guys. This one hurts more than the last 3 blowouts combined. The game was in hand until 20 seconds were left in the game. :-(

I don't think I can tolerate watching the NC game. I think I need another drink. Where's my Southern Comfort? Awww shit...polished that off an hour ago...

  • Bama_North · 11 months ago
I don't think that is what they will remember. OSU made this a very respectable game and stayed in it until the very end. I think people will remember a good game. Then again, maybe I'll just remember a good game..
  • Kevin @ Fanblogs · 11 months ago
I agree. All the talk was that tOSU didn't deserve to be on the same field as Texas. Clearly the Buckeyes can play with just about anybody.
  • Skip1 · 11 months ago
I disagree, IMO tOSU redeemed themselves from the last two years. They used a true freshman quarterback for much of the game and lost in the final seconds to a team many consider the rightful national champions. Sure, you have lost three BCS bowls in a row, and the ESPN talking heads will mention that, but it will always be accompanied with "but they performed well." Those seniors can hold their heads high.
  • GeauxTigers0107 · 11 months ago
It was still an awesome game Tom. The Buckeyes were definitely ready. Defense was outstanding...holding a team that averages 44 pts per to only 3 at the half. Offense was great as well...rushed for nearly 2 bills against the #1 (or was it #2) rush defense in the country. The only mistake was the safety being in so shallow on the slant. He couldn't take the angle away from Crosby. That, and maybe scoring too fast near the end, leaving 2 minutes left on the clock. Nothing to hang y'alls head about Tom.

Texas just made the plays when it needed to. Congrats to all you Horn fans. I can't say that I agree with the comments of Mack Brown and Colt in the post game...about being #1 and could beat anybody right now. Uhhh....no...don't think so Mack. But I guess the high of the moment and a dramatic win in the end will do that sometimes.

Thanks, GT. I'm still crying in my alcohol for the 3rd straight year in January, however. I'm not even blaming Anderson Russell on that play, because Heacock had no business not defending the goal line in that situation with 20 seconds left and a 4 point lead.

Another loooooooooooong off season. I'm starting to understand what Notre Dame fans are going through. Geebus. I don't even know if I can watch the NC game. :-(
  • GeauxTigers0107 · 11 months ago
I hear ya man...but comparing tOSU to Norte Lame is like comparing Jessica Beil to Ugly Betty. Maybe he was in the coverage that was called, IDK. The defense was called pretty good all night IMO. Maybe Heacock caught a brain fart. The safety was definitely too close in though.

And there's nothing wrong with a little Southern Comfort man. That's one of my favorite shots...right behind Gold Schlager. Cheers

Good point with Notre Lame. And Heacock...but for gosh sakes...what a time to catch a brain fart!

I ended up polishing of the entire bottle. Tomorrow will come fast and it won't be pretty. G'night.

And if I seem chatty...I may be going into hibernation until 2009. It's the new Buckeye thing to do now.

Let me throw a quick thread up about the serious politiciking we're going to be seeing from Texas right now...
  • Tom_Blogical · 11 months ago
I will definitely tell you right now that they ARE NOT the #1 team in the f-ing nation. Not against a team they were SUPPOSED to mop the floor with...THAT I will take some solace in.
  • Unbiased · 11 months ago
Let me praface this by telling you, I am a Texas fan, I liked Texas tonight, but I am first and foremost, UNBIASED.

I am sorry to tell you this, but if anyone can claim a split national title, it is Utah. Those guys went UNDEFEATED, including 5 bowl opponents.

Neither UF nor OU can claim that.

At the end of the day, the kids at Utah did NOT pick their opponents. They won every game. They struggled and beat a TCU team that many people said was better than they were, and they absolutelt dominated an SEC team that was ranked #1 for several weeks of the year.

I love Texas, and I understand their feelings, but Utah is the only ones who can truly claim the half-crown.
  • Tom_Blogical · 11 months ago
I have to conclude that you're right. And...I'd like to tell you that Texas earned the victory. They took advantage of OSU and won the game fair and square. There may be OSU fans that will claim the referees took the game away from OSU...in my passion in the heat of the moment, I'll admit I was bitching about the refs as well. However...both teams have to deal with that and adversity. Texas won the game, they were the better team. And obviously, with 20 seconds left...had the superior coaching staff and players on the field. As much as it pains me to say that.

With all that being said, I still think OSU proved they belong with the elite programs in the nation, and may have shown the Big 12's weakness to the rest of the nation. Utah deserves to be #1, in my book.

If they had a 12-team playoff with four first round games, four byes, four second round games, two semi-finals, and a national championship game, that would be 11 sellouts incorporating all of the major bowls and the middle bowls.

First Round - Champs, Insight, Holiday, Gator
Second Round - Outback, Chick-Fil-A, Cotton, Orange
    Semi-Final - Sugar, Fiesta
    Final - Rose

You could shift Orange, Sugar, Fiesta, and Rose among second, semi and final. All of these games would be huge and prime time. The other minor bowls could still stick around. None of this would kill them off.
  • Kevin @ Fanblogs · 11 months ago
Please explain why those games would be sell outs? I certainly can't see fans traveling to four games during the holidays to support their teams, but maybe you know something we don't.
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 11 months ago
Pesky bowls are getting in the way again...

Looks like we'll have to leave them out and seed home field in the playoffs by BCS ranking...
  • Kill_The_BCS · 11 months ago
Kevin, they'd sell out the same way NCAA hoops sells out. There would also be more local and regional interest to going to these games. The bowl games, as they are now, do not have the cachet of NCAA tournament games. In fact, the lesser games, are somewhat like the NIT in that they are meaningless. If you give them some meaning, people will go.
  • Kevin @ Fanblogs · 11 months ago
Even the NCAA regionals don't sell out regularly... and you're talking about 20,000 seats in most venues.
