Fanblogs.com: Auburn AD heckled following Chizik hiring

I think a lot of folks feel this way

Recruitment is the future of Auburn Tigers Football. Jimmy Sexton has hoodwinked Auburn into thinking Gene is the future of Auburn Football and in the process has set the program back five years. The AD and President overlooked the body of work for Gill (3 national titles, NFL experience, and success as a Head Coach for program never known for winning) for a person that is a better fit for their country club and cigar lounge. I also failed to point out that Gene has record of 5-19 as a head coach. Get passed that back -woods thinking of black players are great but black coaches are not for me and my golf/cigar boys. Moreover, it is recruitment and leadership that produces wins and not the ethnic background of the candidate. So, congrats to you Auburn University for hiring based on the good-old-boy system and setting the stage for negative recruitment against Auburn for 70% for athletes at our program (i.e. Players of color). In a word, if recruitment has been a problem for us at Auburn in recent years the mud just got a lot deeper on The Plains.

When you are in a deep hole, stop digging.

Someone please take the shovel out of Jay Jacobs hands.

This is not as bad of a hire as you're making it out to be. Chizik's resume as a DC is exceptional and, if Auburn was basing their decision on those facts alone, Chizik would be considered a phenomenal hire. However, his only head coaching experience is at Iowa State at 5-19. Pitiful right? That's like Indiana hiring Muschamp and expecting great things in two seasons.

There are just certain schools - Iowa State, Indiana and many BCS private schools - that are almost impossible to win at or at least turn around those programs in such a short amount of time. Based only on his stint at ISU, this may be considered a risky hire but, in my opinion, Auburn made a pretty good move.
  • BigWarEagle · 11 months ago
Auburn needed help on the offensive side, not the defensive side. I think the Auburn faithful was expecting a proven offensive mind to come in and jumpstart the program. That is why this came as such a shock.
....and you can win at Iowa State. They had been to bowl games 5 of the 6 years before Chizik got there.
  • jake · 11 months ago
ESPN provides ISU schedule back through 2002. Since then, ISU has never achieved more than 7 wins in a season and each of the bowl games they lost. Any truly good coach would likely use ISU as a stepping stone to a better BCS program.
  • WarEagleFan · 11 months ago
Iowa State had 5 winning seasons out of seven before Chizik showed up and was 5-7 the year before. HE won 3 games his first year and 2 games this year so based on his HC record he SUCKS....which is the postion he was hired for....
  • cyrocks · 11 months ago
Two programs are benefiting from this move...One-Iowa State. Chizik was using ISU as a quick stop until something else came through. As a Cyclone I'm glad to see this literal loser go!Although Ames is a tough place to get recruits, it is located in arguably the best football conference (at least this year). It may take a season or two...ok, maybe three, but we'll land on our feet.
And two-Bama. Looks like Saban will continue to have his way with Auburn as long as Chizik is around.

Personally, I think IA St has to get out of the Big-12 into the Big Televen. It's a much better fit, geographically, for them than is the Big-12. Not to mention, such a move would give the Big Televen another big, natural rivalry; i.e. IA/IA St. It wouldn't hurt recruiting any either. Just a thought.
  • cyrocks · 11 months ago
You're right Zac on every point, the Big Televen would be a good move for ISU...don't think it will happen though. I believe that Notre Dame is poised to fill that 12th spot (as soon as NBC tells them they can). By the way, does anyone know if ND still fields a football team?
  • shiguy · 11 months ago
Right on. I would venture to say that is the exact reason why the Big televen hasn't gotten a 12th team yet. if they do get one it would be much harder to get rid of them should ND ever come out of their NBC BS. But by holding off they could currently take ND at anytime.
  • Ben Prather · 11 months ago
I think they are a better fit for the MAC.
  • Zac · 11 months ago
Geographically, I'd have to disagree. They'd be right on the fringe again. They're well within Big Televen territory now, but on the fringe in the Big 12. Why go to a lesser conference (based upon overall performance) for lesser perks, and still be on the fringe of that conference. IA St needs to be in the Big Televen.
  • Ben Prather · 11 months ago
Because they are a lesser team and should not be BCS.
  • Zac · 11 months ago
They used to say that about NW.
  • Ben Prather · 11 months ago
NW had a good year, almost as good as TCU, Boise State, BYU, Ball State and Utah.
  • Ben Prather · 11 months ago
Yes, lets recruit a head coach that has continued his team's possition as a BCS dead weight. Apparently Auburn has decided to take the SEC BCS money without having to provide a product.

It works for Duke. It works for Mississippi State. It works for Iowa State. It can work at Auburn.

Wasn't Franklin still availabe. That would have even been an even better hire.
  • TigerEducated · 11 months ago
    You folks don't get it...

I'm of the opinion that this is probably the first guy they could get in there that would put up with Lowder...

Lowder wants a guy he can control...Just like on the Auburn Board of Trustees...Just like the Auburn Athletic Department...and just like the Auburn Football Coach...He's wanted to get a puppet in there for 5 years, and he's finally got one...

What a joke for a proud SEC program...
  • ROLLTIDE_73 · 11 months ago
your right but I don't understand why he would want some one thats not going to be able to compete year in and year out.I cant say much Bama has made more than their fair share of bone head hires.Maybe they know something we don't but he certainly isn't a proven coach(HC)
  • Porcine · 11 months ago
Your not the only one who sees it. Lowder reminds of Broyles.
  • WarEagleFan · 11 months ago
    T. Gill from all reports wanted this job very badly and would have been a great fit. But this is terrible to say the least I will with hold final judgement until after next year this is just my gut reaction.
  • Zac · 11 months ago
Did ya see what Charles Barklay had to say about it? I don't agree with all of it, but I do agree with most of it. I think Gill could have been the man. What a wasted opportunity!
  • WarEagleFan · 11 months ago
Yes Gill could have been the man but when you look at the whole stituation I don't think that him being black or having a white wife had anything to do with him not being hired. That's just CB wanting to get some more face time on TV
  • Tiger_1995 · 11 months ago
Tiger Educated... YOU got it right. The problem with Auburn football is LOWDER. He got who HE wanted in. I went to Auburn and am really sad that a good program is corupted by ONE man.

This has nothing to do with this blog, but whatever. GO FINS!!!

    Go FINS??? Whatever.

I was at the Horseshoe in Council Bluffs today (Buffet's OK.), when I noticed a guy in an elaborate Cyclones over-shirt. So, just for the heck of it, I asked for his opinion on Auburn's hiring of Chizik. This guy was as pissed as it gets. I couldn't believe it. I even remarked at what Chizik hadn't done at IA St; that he could even be considered for a job elsewhere was beyond me. This guy basically agreed, aknowledged Chizik's connections at Auburn, and hoped IA St would hire (R U ready for this?) Tommy Tuberville, as he felt Auburn made a big mistake dumping him. What an interesting perspective one can get during lunch.
  • 1Tomcat · 11 months ago
Tommy Tubberville New HC at ISU
  • Zac · 11 months ago
I didn't read that anywhere. So, I gots to know, TC. Did it really happen; you got a link; or are you throwing out some wishful thinking? Cause, I think Tubberville could be successful at IA St.
  • auburnfaninms · 11 months ago
Guess I got this wrong. Didn't realize hiring a new coach wasn't based on record but rather like goverment contracts (goes to the lowest bidder) and we thought Housel was a dumb***
  • Tiger_1995 · 11 months ago
LOWDER is the problem. He finally got total control of the AU football program. Auburn needs to rethink the entire program and who is really controlling things. I am proud of AU the school and of being an Alumni; however, LOWDER being in total control now is very sad. Very sad.
  • Zac · 11 months ago
That's like Pastilong at WVU. The man knows how to hire good coaches, but he hasn't a clue as to how to keep em there.

  • GeauxTigers0107 · 11 months ago
LOL. The stuff they dream up....

Regarding the heckler at the airport.....I would say that he's slightly displeased with something. Hard to tell what's bothering him though.

    Geaux Tigers

I'm amazed he didn't throw his shoes.

    Ben:

Now, that there is some funny funny stuff. After Charles Barkley's comments today...Gee, I wonder...
  • BigWarEagle · 11 months ago
Jay Jacobs is the Al Davis of college football
  • MattRyan · 11 months ago
Gene Chizik is the Mike Smith of college football
  • PrinceMarko · 11 months ago
Wow, what a bad choice. The AD will be gone after next year if Auburn had a record like Tennessee did this year.
  • Tommy_Trojan · 11 months ago
Well then - why is the Michigan AD still there? Should he not be on the highway? I find it pretty hilarious that a Michigan man would get on here and quip about what he thought might be a bad hire. Shoud Auburn go out and get them one of those illustrious Big East coaches, or wait better yet, a MAC coach to come in and learn the SEC on the fly? No, Auburn got a guy who understands what the SEC is. Lane Kiffen is gonna have more trouble getting used to the SEC than Gene Chizik is gonna have. I sure hope that Rich Rodriguez can figure out the Big 10 pretty soon. He seemed to be having even more trouble figuring out how to play defense than offense even. I don't think Chizik will have to worry about figuring out how to play defense though. He'll only have to figure out how to get some offense going.
  • Zac · 11 months ago
Tommy T, I thought MI's boosters would dump their AD after his having allegedly missed the opportunity to steal Les Miles from LSU. But worry not; Rodriguez & Co. will likely be better next year. Sarcastic or not, I think Jim Leavitt would have been a good fit for Auburn, but why should he leave S FL?

If Chizik still maintains an understanding of the SEC, I think he may have lost his understanding of defense. His Cyclones have had 4 TD's or more dropped on em in 10 outta 12 games; 5 TD's or more were scored against em in 8 of those games. I don't see that as a good example of having an understanding of defense.

As far as the Lane Kiffin hiring goes, his success at TN will depend mightily upon how well he maintains a good relationship with his dad, not just as father & son, but as Supervisor & Subordinate. Just my opinion.
