Fanblogs.com: BC goes psycho ex-girlfriend on Jagodzinski

  • Kill_The_BCS · 11 months ago
Jags was at BC for two years and he's already looking to escape. It's hard to blame DeFilippo. It's about time that someone dealt with coaches who refuse to honor their contracts. Maybe this will be a positive trend. Jags had NO head coaching experience when DeFilippo took a shot on him. More likely, Jags does not land the Jets job and goes back to annonymity as an assistant somewhere. It's also more likely that colleges will think twice before hiring him knowing he will head to the NFL as soon as he gets a sniff.

The alternative in keeping Jags is that he doesn't get the Jets job and BC keeps him and can't recruit because every kid knows that Jags would be gone soon anyway. Any coach who looks after two years, is dead man walking. That's why he walks the plank.

As far as BC goes, they will get good candidates. DeFilippo is a good AD and BC is a good job. Let's just hope DeFilippo appreciates what he has (loyalty from two great coaches) on the basketball and hockey sides.

Respectfully... I think your appreciation for the coaching profession is falling short. Go ask any coach at any level and they'll tell you 99-1 that the NFL is the coaching pinnacle. It's what almost every coach aspires to from the day they get their first whistle. Think about it... only 32 men in the entire world get to be NFL coaches at any one time. In crazy years, there are only four or five openings, if that.

Maybe it's wrong for me to even offer this perspective, but I seriously think that Jags had to consider the offer. Yeah it stubs some toes at BC, but you can only so no thanks to the NFL so many times before you're on the do not hire list. Is it so wrong for Jags to think that there might be more altitude to his career than ending it at BC?

Up until a few hours ago... Jags was widely considered to be one of the best things BC had going for it. He was the cat's meow. Now... just hours later.... BC is going to cut ties with the man because... he had the gall to even consider accepting an interview when a team came calling??? That makes no sense at all.

Rich Brooks, Pete Carroll, Butch Davis, Steve Spurrier, Nick Saban, & Bobby Petrino disagree with you about that "pinnacle" statement, Kev...
  • Kevin @ Fanblogs · 11 months ago
I don't know if they disagree... but they have certainly been there, done that.

Regardless... you off the man you believed in hours ago because he might interview?
  • YouNeedHelp · 11 months ago
Signed, DeFilippo's Mother. What are you thinking, what if he had two bad years and they run him out. What about the contract? You don't know anything about the "Business of Football"! It is no longer a game, it is a business, deal with it!
  • YouNeedHelp · 11 months ago
Hey Gene, where did you learn so much about sports anyway? Sprinfield College, what were you on the debate team? You must have been good to BS your way all the way up the Pesident's ass to keep your job. Maybe YOU are the one that needs to leave!
  • TigerEducated · 11 months ago
BC already had one coach use them as a stepping stone, but took a chance on this guy, who has gotten some early results for them. They saw the same thing happening.

But, evidently, there was some smoke on this long before it got to this point. I'm guessing the Administration had some run-ins with Jagodicantspellhislasnamezinski prior to this issue.

Just a hunch, of course, but it seems to be killing a fruit-fly with a 100 kiloton nuclear weapon.

In the famous words of Paul Harvey, I'm still waiting to hear "The rest of the story..."

Gene D took over the BC program when it was still in the wake of the the mess that Chet Gladchuck and Dan Henning left. Since then BC has moved from the fractured Big East to the ACC, with an enormous increase in revenue; that was not an easy transition. Facilities have been greatly improved. Athletic donations are up. There is a marketing partnership betwen BC and the Red Sox.

His coaching choices have been solid. BC went to the ACC final round against Duke in its first year in the league and has alumni (Jared Dudley, Craig Smith) in the NBA. The Hockey team has brought home a national championship. The football program is solid and has produced NFL stand-outs from Dan Koppen to Chris Snee to Matt Ryan, and a generation of NFL-bound Eagles who may yet produce on a grand scale (e.g. Matthias Kiwanuka).

On a personal level, the guy sends hand-written thank-you notes, and his family personally donated a scholarship fund to the university. How many ADs do that?

Things at BC have improved drastically on Gene's watch. Let's hear the facts before accusing him of going psycho.
  • TigerEducated · 11 months ago
Thanks for the insights...This makes things sound more like Jags painted a VERY sympathetic picture to Chris Mortensen (IE-Nick Saban & Jimmy Sexton's personal NFL-coaching-job-NFL-rumor-turned-raise-and-extension-bait PR man) and less like the AD is in the wrong.

Let's be honest, this does sound a tad bit on the fantastic side.

Thanks for the insights on this one, EagleinDC...Don't be a stranger...We need some more diverse voices here on Fanblogs. I know all Non-SEC & Big XII folks here would appreciate an informed voice to join them in their fight against all things Power Conference, LOL!

He may be the next Dali Lama... but he's still blackmailing his coach.
  • TigerEducated · 11 months ago
I think you're missing the point we're both trying to make...

I think its BS that Jags is running out there to come off as a sympathetic figure...
  • Kevin @ Fanblogs · 11 months ago
I get what you're saying... but no one at BC is denying it, either. Someone leaked it. You believe it's Jags to look sympathetic. (I'm not sure that really makes sense - why would he need to look sympathetic when the decision is in his hands?) It's possible that the AD would leak it to force his hands and TURN PUBLIC SENTIMENT AGAINST JAGS... which would seem to be working, based on your comments.

It's much more likely that Jags said something to the other coaches, and they leaked it. Neither party is guilty. Neither party is innocent.

Regardless... the coach is getting blackmailed by the AD.
  • TigerEducated · 11 months ago
I don't think the AD would leak information that draconian on his part in an effort to make himself look better.

That's a little bit on the counterintuitive side...
  • kevindonahue · 11 months ago
No.. it's not counterintuitive at all. It's an exceptional shrewd and demonstrative move to rally the faithful against a boogeyman head coach who puts himself above sacred BC. One man's draconian is another man's sainted defender.
  • Ramblin' Gator · 11 months ago
Watch out Jags! They're going to boil your rabbit!
  • Kill_The_BCS · 11 months ago
Jags is going to come out of this thing looking like an opportunist and only using BC to get to his next stop. Two years at a school is a joke and it's a bad joke on recruits. This crap has to end somewhere. More importantly, as soon as Jags accepted the Jets interview, it set the BC football program back in recruiting. Time to cut ties with the carpetbagger.
  • Kevin @ Fanblogs · 11 months ago
Let's not lose perspective here, people. It's boston college versus the NEW YORK JETS. Anybody who says they would act differently in Jags position is a nut... and likely the next head coach at BC.
  • Kill_The_BCS · 11 months ago
Let's be realistic here. Jags is not going to get the Jets job and this is not BC vs the Jets. But he is announcing to the world that he wants to get back to the NFL. Should Jags have give Gene D the courtesy of letting him know he was in contact with the Jets and that he wanted to explore getting back to the NFL? YES, especially after he went back to the AD for money last year. DeFelippo and BC might be best off giving the job to Frank Spaziani. He has been the one constant during the past several years and it's been the BC defense that has made them a top 25 team. If BC wants loyalty and a longtime coach running its program, it's time they showed it on their end to Spaz.

So...people sometimes interview for other jobs while still working their current job?

    Wierd...
  • vtmechE · 11 months ago
oh BC, please go through with this, i hate us losing in the regular season to BC each year, its actually quite painful
  • PittsburghTiger · 11 months ago
I have no love for BC, especially after they stabbed the Big East in the back, but what the hell is that guy thinking?

I would do the same if I was BC's AD. First Major Tom leaves for another conference gig and now this guy wants out after two seasons.

    Nice display of loyalty JJ
  • Kevin @ Fanblogs · 11 months ago
Here's a thought... maybe the two guys weren't real passionate about staying because the conditions there are less favorable than other places.
  • Kevin @ Fanblogs · 11 months ago
Two notes tonight from Dr. Saturday:

    1) DeFilippo is already referring to Jags in the past tense.

"Jeff is a very good man and an excellent football coach," DeFilippo said. "He did a wonderful job for us while he was here at BC. I wish Jeff would not take this interview and would remain as head coach at BC."

    2) If BC fires Jags, they will likely attempt to negotiate some resolution to buy out the last three years of his contract, but it's likely that Jags will stick them for the full buyout.
  • PittsburghTiger · 11 months ago
There are NO secrets in the coaching world. He knew what BC was like before he accepted the job. Now he has used them to bolster his resume and he wants to bolt.
  • GeauxTigers0107 · 11 months ago
He used BC? I don't think so. He turned the program around. They got exactly what they wanted and that was a winning program.

If you can say he used them, the same point can be turned around by saying BC used him to rejuvinate their program.

Bottom line is they paid for a service and he delivered. There was no using going on on either side, IMO.

From 1999-2005 BC was 58-28. I don't think that qualifies as a "rebuild".

Does he still have a contract? Did he get an extension?
  • Kill_The_BCS · 11 months ago
Kevin, I read this on the web from discussions on WEEI today. If this is true, there is no way he'll get a full buyout. Also, Tom O'Brien's departure was somewhat mutual. He wasn't offered much to stay.

The story from Boston, per chatter on WEEI is:

    1) Jags made an greement with the AD to stay a minimum of 5 years and in exchange, the AD went to bat big for him to get him hired and paid - he was largely an unknown and therefore, conside a big risk at the time by the trustees.

    2) Last year, he asked BC for a raise and BC quitely gave it to him

    3) Jags lied about to the AD about his intent to interview with the Jets
  • GeauxTigers0107 · 11 months ago
It's kinda like when a guy says to you, Damn your wife is fine. You don't get mad and punch him in the eye. You take it as a compliment and move on. There's definitely two ways to look at it. I understand all the points against but the bottom line is they're hanging his job over his head, in public no less, to keep him there. Regardless if he even takes the interview, or should I say took the interview, he wasn't going to be coaching at BC next year. He asked for a raise because he deserved it. They gave it to him because they agreed that he deserved it. The NFL recognized his talent and requested an interview. Not "we're gonna hire you" or "the job is yours". Just a simple interview...and the AD decides to strongarm him.

That's probably the best thing that could've happened (threatening his job) to Jags. Now he knows, along with the rest of the country, their true colors.

I agree with you for the most part. Once the coach starts talking to the NFL, it's a recruiter killer and it's time to part ways. From what I have read, the common protocol is that coaches usually alert ADs before they talk to NFL teams. Jags didn't do that. Some are speculating that Jags realized that he can't compete in the ACC without a quarterback and that's the current situation at BC (it's also Jags' fault). Without that quarterback, BC won't be repeating any time soon as Atlantic Division champs and that would hurt Jags' portfolio looking for an NFL job.

Jags knows full well he's not getting the Jets job and he also knew what would happen if he went ahead and interviewed for the Jets job. So, what is to make of all of this? My guess is that he wants out at BC and this is his exit scenario. Maybe he will get an NFL OC position this year or has been promised one already.
  • GeauxTigers0107 · 11 months ago
Good points as well. However, he's obviously a good enough recruiter, evaluator of talent and coach to continue the success he's built at BC. Therefore, I don't buy into the "he won't be repeating any time soon" thinking.

And how do we know that he knew his AD would publicly blackmail him with his job if he went on so much as an interview? Not subscribing to that thought either.

What's the latest on this? Heard anything?

Well at least the AD kept his word, which, according to him, is why he had to let Jags go....because Jags couldn't keep his word. I guess I understand both sides of it when you listen to his side. That still doesn't change the fact that it's a sh_tty thing to do.
