Well at least the AD kept his word, which, according to him, is why he had to let Jags go....because Jags couldn't keep his word. I guess I understand both sides of it when you listen to his side. That still doesn't change the fact that it's a sh_tty thing to do.

Let's be realistic here. Jags is not going to get the Jets job and this is not BC vs the Jets. But he is announcing to the world that he wants to get back to the NFL. Should Jags have give Gene D the courtesy of letting him know he was in contact with the Jets and that he wanted to explore getting back to the NFL? YES, especially after he went back to the AD for money last year. DeFelippo and BC might be best off giving the job to Frank Spaziani. He has been the one constant during the past several years and it's been the BC defense that has made them a top 25 team. If BC wants loyalty and a longtime coach running its program, it's time they showed it on their end to Spaz.

From 1999-2005 BC was 58-28. I don't think that qualifies as a "rebuild".

Does he still have a contract? Did he get an extension?

Good points as well. However, he's obviously a good enough recruiter, evaluator of talent and coach to continue the success he's built at BC. Therefore, I don't buy into the "he won't be repeating any time soon" thinking.

And how do we know that he knew his AD would publicly blackmail him with his job if he went on so much as an interview? Not subscribing to that thought either.

What's the latest on this? Heard anything?

He used BC? I don't think so. He turned the program around. They got exactly what they wanted and that was a winning program.

If you can say he used them, the same point can be turned around by saying BC used him to rejuvinate their program.

Bottom line is they paid for a service and he delivered. There was no using going on on either side, IMO.

There are NO secrets in the coaching world. He knew what BC was like before he accepted the job. Now he has used them to bolster his resume and he wants to bolt.

I agree with you for the most part. Once the coach starts talking to the NFL, it's a recruiter killer and it's time to part ways. From what I have read, the common protocol is that coaches usually alert ADs before they talk to NFL teams. Jags didn't do that. Some are speculating that Jags realized that he can't compete in the ACC without a quarterback and that's the current situation at BC (it's also Jags' fault). Without that quarterback, BC won't be repeating any time soon as Atlantic Division champs and that would hurt Jags' portfolio looking for an NFL job.

Jags knows full well he's not getting the Jets job and he also knew what would happen if he went ahead and interviewed for the Jets job. So, what is to make of all of this? My guess is that he wants out at BC and this is his exit scenario. Maybe he will get an NFL OC position this year or has been promised one already.

It's kinda like when a guy says to you, Damn your wife is fine. You don't get mad and punch him in the eye. You take it as a compliment and move on. There's definitely two ways to look at it. I understand all the points against but the bottom line is they're hanging his job over his head, in public no less, to keep him there. Regardless if he even takes the interview, or should I say took the interview, he wasn't going to be coaching at BC next year. He asked for a raise because he deserved it. They gave it to him because they agreed that he deserved it. The NFL recognized his talent and requested an interview. Not "we're gonna hire you" or "the job is yours". Just a simple interview...and the AD decides to strongarm him.

That's probably the best thing that could've happened (threatening his job) to Jags. Now he knows, along with the rest of the country, their true colors.

Kevin, I read this on the web from discussions on WEEI today. If this is true, there is no way he'll get a full buyout. Also, Tom O'Brien's departure was somewhat mutual. He wasn't offered much to stay.

The story from Boston, per chatter on WEEI is:

1) Jags made an greement with the AD to stay a minimum of 5 years and in exchange, the AD went to bat big for him to get him hired and paid - he was largely an unknown and therefore, conside a big risk at the time by the trustees.

2) Last year, he asked BC for a raise and BC quitely gave it to him

3) Jags lied about to the AD about his intent to interview with the Jets

Two notes tonight from Dr. Saturday:

1) DeFilippo is already referring to Jags in the past tense.

"Jeff is a very good man and an excellent football coach," DeFilippo said. "He did a wonderful job for us while he was here at BC. I wish Jeff would not take this interview and would remain as head coach at BC."

2) If BC fires Jags, they will likely attempt to negotiate some resolution to buy out the last three years of his contract, but it's likely that Jags will stick them for the full buyout.

No.. it's not counterintuitive at all. It's an exceptional shrewd and demonstrative move to rally the faithful against a boogeyman head coach who puts himself above sacred BC. One man's draconian is another man's sainted defender.

I get what you're saying... but no one at BC is denying it, either. Someone leaked it. You believe it's Jags to look sympathetic. (I'm not sure that really makes sense - why would he need to look sympathetic when the decision is in his hands?) It's possible that the AD would leak it to force his hands and TURN PUBLIC SENTIMENT AGAINST JAGS... which would seem to be working, based on your comments.

It's much more likely that Jags said something to the other coaches, and they leaked it. Neither party is guilty. Neither party is innocent.

Regardless... the coach is getting blackmailed by the AD.

I have no love for BC, especially after they stabbed the Big East in the back, but what the hell is that guy thinking?

I would do the same if I was BC's AD. First Major Tom leaves for another conference gig and now this guy wants out after two seasons.

Let's not lose perspective here, people. It's boston college versus the NEW YORK JETS. Anybody who says they would act differently in Jags position is a nut... and likely the next head coach at BC.
