Fanblogs.com: Beat-Down!!! The Most Lopsided Rivalries in Division 1-A

  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
People always ask how Notre Dame and Navy came to have a rivalry. I think the story goes like this: During WWII, the Japanese blockaded South Bend, preventing valuable shipments of corn from reaching Chicago. So the US Navy took on the Imperial Navy in the Battle of French Lick, and defeated them. The US Army was tied up in traffic outside Indianapolis and was unable to relieve South Bend.

Notre Dame was so impressed that they decided to cancel their games with Army and pick up Navy instead, assuring themselves at least one essentially 1-AA opponent each year under the guise of patriotism...
  • JB · 1 year ago
funny WEA, that deserves a point, that should bring you up to.....-139

why is navy on this list? isn't navy considered non-bcs?
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
There's only three 1-A independents, so I figured what the heck...
  • Zac · 1 year ago
Navy is an Independent in the BCS Division. While they are not "guaranteed" a BCS bowl, I agree with WarEagle; they belong on the list.

WHERE TEXAS AT! They supposed to all that and alot mo'! Especially under William Brown! Where they at?
  • Richard Lee Nester Jr. · 1 year ago
How can you consider any of these "rivalries"? Rivalries exist when each game has a chance to be close. Your #1 isn't even a rivalry, much less are the games ever close. Get a clue.
  • Lennie Collins · 1 year ago
Richard Lee Nester Jr...who are you? And what are you? I guess you determine what a rivalry should be! So you get a clue and get lost!
  • Richard Lee Nester Jr. · 1 year ago
I did just get lost....in your incoherent ramblings from above. Let us reflect on the records of teams in the red river rivalry...may I note that Texas dominates OU...that should be #1 on the list. #2 on the list should be my domination of you.
  • Lennie Collins · 1 year ago
First of all you don't know me so you dominates nothing. Second of all you gotz lost in the education system cause you can't read! Oklahoma and Texas are interstate rivals not intrastate so you posted in the wrong thread. It's not to late you can get your G.E.D.!
  • Lennie Collins · 1 year ago
That is Texas is supposed to be all that and alot mo'! Not the fans the football team!

    Navy is BCS school?
  • Zac · 1 year ago
Navy is an Independent in the BCS Division. While they are not "guaranteed" a BCS bowl, I agree with WarEagle; they belong on the list.

Mike, I apologize for the repeat, but the way some of these posts get moved around, it would have been hard to point out to whom I had previously responded that you could refer to it.
  • OU_Ron · 1 year ago
WEA, can this mean that Michigan plays more cupcakes than us.......
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
No, it means that there is very little parity in the Big 10(11). Michigan has a 73% conference winning percentage, Ohio State has 69%, relative newcomer Penn State has about 56%, and Michigan State hovers right at 50%. Everyone else is below that, which shows you that historically, the conference has been dominated by two teams.

Contrast that with the SEC, where half the teams have 50% or greater conference winning percentage. That would tend to indicate more parity.

I didn't look at any other conferences yet. It would be fun if you could break out old Big 8 records from current Big 12 records to see how dominant OU and Nebraska were...
  • Zac · 1 year ago
I thought Penn St/WVU, Pitt/WVU, or Penn St/PItt would have made this list. Guess not. . .
  • dithridge · 1 year ago
you underestimate pitt vs penn state. penn state currently leads the series by 8 games and has been making excuses to not play pitt since 2000. pitt owned the lead in this series from 1926 to 1973.
  • Zac · 1 year ago
There's a lot of history in the Penn St/Pitt series, including off the field "stuff", which will require some fence mending before these 2 renew the series. For one, Joe Pa will have to retire. I like the man; I really do, but he personally has written off Pitt as a future foe for his program.

Realistically, Penn St should be in the Big East; they should never have been allowed by the Big East to join the Big Televen. Penn St was actually once invited to join. When put to a vote, their invitation was turned down, and Pitt was instrumental in making that happen. Mike Tranghese even told his commissioners ". . .they would rue the day they didn't elect Penn St to join the Big East.

We've all seen what's happened since. While there have been attempts to renew the series, through the Big East, Joe Pa has always countered with specific demands, which apparently Pitt will not accept. So, sadly, until Joe goes, there'll be no Penn St/Pitt rivalry renewal.
  • shiguy · 1 year ago
very sad as that is a REAL rivalry that both teams could actually rally behind. i mean what rivalries does penn st. even play anymore? minnesota? michigan st.? those were made up rivalries when they joined the B10(11). at my current job i had a woman who looked at me and was like "o west virginia huh" turns out she was from penn st. i of course was like "what do you have against WVU?" to which i was quickly reminded of the rivalry between the two schools back in the day that i didn't even realize she lived though. sad that this school doesn't play any of its original rivals and whos coach is too stuborn to bend for one of the games.
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
Would you mind terribly if WVU was to go to the Big 10(12) and then started playing new rivals Minnesota and Michigan State?

Arkansas never had rivalries with Auburn and Alabama and LSU, but I'd say that they're learning to appeciate them now...
  • shiguy · 1 year ago
yes i would actually. because those are not real rivals. just as i'm opposed to the fact Cincy and Pitt are now "rivals" because they wanted to create rivals in the new BE. rivalries should be developed, not created. just because you have a trophy for something doesn't make it a big rivalry. likewise just because there isn't a trophy doesn't mean it isn't a rivalry.
  • JB · 1 year ago
I agree shiguy...there should be two classes of rivalries...ESPN (or media) Rivalries and fan rivalries
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
Rivalries should be developed, not created. What's the difference, unless you are inferring that under no circumstances should new rivalries be initiated?

You Eeers don't really have a choice but to foster new rivalries. Have you checked conference alignments lately? No more Penn State or VA Tech or Boston College on the schedule. They've been replaced with Cincinatti and Louisville.

I'm thinking that I'd take Minnesota and Michigan State...
  • shiguy · 1 year ago
this is true that WVU doesn't play VA tech anymore however we do play Pitt and as for your new rivalries i didn't say new ones could never be developed. but here is an example. cincy and pitt became "rivals" because someone realized they're both on the same river and came up with some corny rivalry trophy. WVU and louisville have been developing into heated rivals, without any sort of forced rivarly. even last year, which was a down year for louisville as they were already out of the conference race and it was still one of the most exciting games of the year. i'm not trying to glorify anyone here but that is a perfect difference between a created rivalry and a developed rivarly.
  • Zac · 1 year ago
I've been thinking about your question a while. Answering is actually easy; it's the truth that's hard. While I would like to think there really is integrity involved with the decision making, truth is this: Were WVU suddenly invited to join the Big-Televen, if it meant more money for WVU & its Athletic dept., they'd likely go. While they would renew a long time, long gone rivalry with Penn St, they would lose the rivalry with Pitt. Speaking of Pitt, it’s more likely they would get the invite than WVU.
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
Zac, it's not too hard to play an 8 game conference schedule and still keep one historic OOC rival. Pitt would be the one that WVU keeps.

Just look at Florida-FSU, Georgia-GA Tech...
  • dithridge · 1 year ago
I wasn't even alive when the big east was created but from reading old newspaper articles i believe joepa wanted to start an all sports conference with psu, wvu, bc, pitt, syracuse, rutgers, and temple in 1979 or 1980. bc and syracuse didn't want to leave the basketball-rich big east, which led penn state and pitt to apply for the big east. pitt was admitted but penn state wasn't because their basketball program wasn't up to big east standards.

If anybody was around back then and witnessed these events in real time I would enjoy learning more.
  • Jeffrey · 1 year ago
There were several that did not make the list for whatever reason, like Oregon/Idaho.
  • Lennie Collins · 1 year ago
Half of Oklahoma State wins have came in the 1990's and 2000's. I will give Oklahoma State some credit. They do and will play Oklahoma "tough" when oklahoma is ranked real high! I expect a real close game this year although I still believe Texas A&M might give Oklahoma a good scare!
  • JB · 1 year ago
Hey lennie, sry to get off subject but how was the movie?? Did your son like it?
  • Lennie Collins · 1 year ago
It was long: 2 hours & 45 minutes long including the previews. I would not recommend parents to take small children that have "nightmares" to go see it. This is the best realistic version of the Joker & Two- Face ever. My son liked it and hopefully he will not have nightmares.
  • JB · 1 year ago
Good i wanna go c it............. i dont really have to worry about that haha... i am only fifteen... no kids!!

I think it's a R-rated movie, JB, so I'm afraid that you'll have to have a parent accompany you...

I know this belongs on the Open Thread, but I'm having trouble getting the comments to up-load again. I took my family to see The Dark Knight. I agree, very long, and very rough on a young viewing audience. I wouldn't recommend kids below the age of 10 in this one. Even then, some parents may want to use some discretion.

While we're on the subject of movies, here's a possible future thread to consider. How many non-college football movies actually referred to college football during the movie? Every now and then, we'll watch a movie and in it people are at a bar watching baseball, basketball, even hockey. Some show people in their living rooms watching these games. When was the last time any movie referenced a college football game in some way, let alone the results?
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
I don't know about that, Zac, but I'd be up for another Animal House Reference Thread here again soon...

If we had to limited it to football movies, maybe we could quote Rudy, but I just thought that movie was a little sappy...

I bet you have it on DVD, right?

    :-)
  • Zac · 1 year ago
Don't have that one or "We Are Marshall". Maybe someday. . .
  • Lennie Collins · 1 year ago
I don't know but Dark Knight was the (I ain't gone say it!).
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
I think these qualify more as perpetuated cupcakes than rivalries.
  • Lennie Collins · 1 year ago
Navy is the only one on here I don't see improving over the next few years.
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
Fortunately for them their rival is Notre Dame
  • Lennie Collins · 1 year ago
Actually it's the Army. Even though the Army's home is in Indiana and the Navy's home is in Maryland. The NAME is why they are rival not the geographcs
  • Zac · 1 year ago
Wait a minute, Lennie, Army's academy is in SE NY (Dutchess or Orange County), just south of Newburgh. Where's Indiana come into play?
  • Lennie Collins · 1 year ago
You are right Zac. West Point is in New York. It seems that I am becoming ill. I started feeling terrrible about 3AM and I am feeling worst as the day goes on! Army - New York & Navy Maryland.
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
Navies primary rival is Army, then Air Force.

But #2 on the list above is Notre Dame - Navy
  • Zac · 1 year ago
I've been thinking about this one, and I'm not sure I agree with cupcakes. I would put teams like Purdue more at "journeyman" status, or "good opponents". They're a team which makes the better team work hard in a tune-up against the big opponent down the road. I think Navy belongs their as well. Teams like this have their good years and bad, but don't usually vie for a NC, yet always manage to give "good" teams good games.
  • CastleSteps · 1 year ago
Wow that Oklahoma vs. Iowa record is pretty amazing! I've never seen something so lopsided, well other than the red sox record against the yankees up until a few years ago, but that's opening a whole new can of worms.
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
Yes, please take that subject to the nearest uniform thread...

Being that Iowa State had three different series that would have ranked on this list, I wonder if they might not be better off in the Mountain West or something...
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
Maybe they could swap for TCU, then both teams would be closer to where they belong based on performance, that is once Utah and BYU go to the PAC 10...
  • Zac · 1 year ago
I still don't understand why IA St isn't in the Big-Televen, as opposed to the Big-12, given their location relative to IA and the rest of the Big-"T's" members.

I can't understand why Tennessee - Kentucky isn't on here. Now that Notre Dame was beaten by Navy it stands as the longest winning streak in College football. I think it stands at like 25 years straight... with no end in sight I don't believe.
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
Because Kentucky is on the receiving end of a bigger beatdown from the hands of Georgia and we have a strict limit of one beatdown per team to be ranked...

It's also the same reason that the list doesn't reflect Tennessee over Vanderbilt or Florida over Tennessee...

    J/K about the last one...
  • zach17 · 1 year ago
That kinda blows my mind that Georgia has done more work on Kentucky than Tennessee has. And Tenn over Vandy is a pretty lop sided series itself... and watch the Florida comments.. very touchy subject in Knoxville. They have gotten the better of us more often than we have them. But we are the sole reason that Ron Zook got fired. He dropped two straight in the Swamp to us... and had no SEC East championships. But we'll see this year.. we got Florida in Neyland. And Tenn is a sleeper in the East. No one gives us a chance but hey.. they haven't in years and we have won the East 4 out of the last 7 years. I call it now... Florida vs. Tenn is the game for the East because Georgia can't beat both and might not beat either. Tenn has traditionally played well in Athens.
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
Don't get too fixated on Florida. You guys have to make a trip to the Plains of East Alabama this year. I'm sure you'll be looking for a little payback for the sweep of the last series. It'll be good to have the Vowels back in town. I haven't seen you guys in Jordan-Hare since you squeaked by our down-trodden team in 1998...
  • zach17 · 1 year ago
You did put the sweep on us last serious and beat us twice in one year. Once in the regular season and once in the SEC championship. But we beat you in the 97' SEC Championship and in 98' and 99' so I would say we have kinda went back and forth. I'm not excited to have you all back on scedule by any means. We have it hard enough playin Florida, Georgia, and Alabama every year. I'm curious to see how the west turns out this year... who's year do you think it is. You think LSU will win it again or do you think Alabama or Auburn can squeeze one out.
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
Ahh...I still recall the good old days when we had Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, and Florida on the schedule every year. Auburn really should be in the Eastern division, but that's for another day...

We still have the all-time series lead on you, which is remarkable, especially considering that you wouldn't even come to Auburn to play us until 1980. We had to play at Legion Field for OUR home games, and we know who's stadium that was...

Two-horse race in the west this year, but anything is possible. If we hold serve against the purple Tigers in Auburn this year, we should be fine...
  • JB · 1 year ago
Yea, the usual two horse race with the winner of the LSU-AUB game going to Atl.......road team usually does like S*** in that game so looks like it is AU's west to lose............................due to the SEC schedule rotation, Auburns conference toughies are at home this year, while LSU must travel....boring year in deaf valley!!!!! only two games to watch!!! • Richard Lee Nester Jr. · 1 year ago
i think War Eagle is right. I mean..ISU was leading OU at halftime last year...only to lose late in the game, to a team that was ranked over 100 spots higher. That sounds pretty lopsided to me, and it was definately a beatdown."Sooners Survive Scare From Iowa State" was the headline. You don't have a clue what is going on in college football.
