Fanblogs.com: Big 12 could have 3 BCS teams.

  • Bob · 1 year ago
I seriously doubt the powers that be would allow that to happen. The Big/Pac Tens would wail how unfair that scenario is to their conferences, etc.
  • r. frame · 1 year ago
IF OU loses to OSU there will be TWO teams tied for the big 12 south. The rules state , if two teams are tied (tex and tt) the division winner will be decided by the head to head matchup, which would be tex tech since they beat tex head to head. IF OU wins, they will probally jump over TEX with help from the computer since texas played no out-of-conf foes that are ranked in the TOP 40. OU played 2 ooc foes in the top 25. Looks like "texas toast" no matter what happens to OU/OSU game. OU win= OU div champ, OU lose Tex Tech div champ. If im wrong lwould like to see the another explanation

I do think the Big XII deserves 3 teams in the BCS this season. I just don't think Missouri deserves to be the third. Oklahoma, Texas, and Texas Tech all deserve it. I am very aware that isn't possible, but it should be.

On one hand, I'd love to see the Big XII get 3 in, but on the other, I'd hate to not see a Big XII vs. SEC championship game. I don't want to have to listen to th SEC fans complain all offseason and for years to come. I'd much rather see them settle it on the field.

I totally agree Missu is #5 in the XII- just barely
Texas,Texas Tech.OK state and Oklahoma are all better teams
in a likelyhood a Missu vs OU Champ game would feature two teams that Texas beat
The Horns beat OU by 10 points and stomped Missu
The best senerio would be for Tech to beat OU and lose to BU and Missu
or OK over Tech and OK st over OU and BU overTech Then UT over Missu again
Its a big cluster and the B-12 south rules naming the loser of the champ game #2 in the B-12 is a farce, because if its Missu they would be 1-3 against the south not facing OU or TTech in the regular season and narrowly escaping BU 31-28

TC, I think the Big 12 has an opportunity for a mini-play-off. Instead of just a Big-12 Championship, imagine when the regular season is over and all the votes are in if the best 4 from MO, OK, OK St, TX, & TX Tech played off. The 2 finalists would be guaranteed BCS bowls. The Champion (provided it's undefeated or possesses 1 loss) would play for the NC.

Think about it. The NCAA rule allows for a 12-team conference to have a championship game. It doesn't say as to how the teams playing in that game are to be chosen. What could be better than that?

Did you make this up? Your link takes me back to those monkeys!

Sounds like "monkey business" to me. Oh...

Only 2 teams from any conference can play in BCS games
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
The LA Times, linked in the article, cites Bill Hancock, BCS administrator, as stating the BCS automatic qualifications trump the no three teams rule.

This is a mid season change of BCS policy much like the change last year's ammendment to include provisions for if their are not enough at large teams eligible.
  • Zac · 1 year ago
U R correct; that's the rule. That doesn't mean we have to like it. You see; the rule also states those teams in the Top-10 shall go (5 BCS bowls/10 teams). Two seasons ago, the Big Televen had 3 teams in the Top-10. WI was the lowest of them, ranked 7th. As a result, #12 ND (10-2) went BcS'n instead of #7 WI. Not that the outcome would have been any different, but we all saw what LSU did to ND. And, WI did beat a respectable AR team in their bowl.

My opinion: If the 5 BCS bowls are slotted for the Top-10 teams, then those are the teams which should go to the BCS. It doesn't seem fair to me to punish teams which are members of a strong conference. If the Big-12 puts 3 teams in the Top-10, then play em in the BCS. I feel the same way about the SEC or even ACC; though, I don't think we have to worry about the ACC. (I know we don't have to worry about the Big East, leastly or easy.)
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
Look out for the MWC though...
  • Zac · 1 year ago
Utha's in, gotta be. That or ND. I guess it depends upon how many fans the bowl committee's want to show up.

If Bama loses to AU and beats UF, I'm pretty sure bama would still be in NC game. I don't recall where I read it, but I believe the only way your scenario could play out would be if the SEC champ has 2 losses, and even that is remote, due to new weight they placed on the conference championships.

Now, assuming UF and Bama both finish with 2 losses--there will still be a strong undercurrent against 2 teams from same conference, for one simple truism that cannot be escaped under that scenario: the absurdity of crowning a team "national champ", that didn't even win its conference.
To put it in perspective: the 2nd (perhaps even 3rd) best team in a conference....would be the national champ????? It almost happened once before (OU v. USC)--which prompted the BCS to adjust it's formula to place greater weight on conf championships. It almost happened again in '06 (Michigan/OSU); I heard they adjusted again after '06 to place even more weight on conference champ, as a result.

So it's probably even more remote a possibility than you're suggesting, but....

    ...stranger things have happened.

The good news--if 2 big XII teams played for "nc"?: we wouldn't have to wait around 'till Jan 8, to know who's champ. The "NC game" would assume all the relevance of one of those post season "all star" or "senior" games....

Hey TG Those games have already been played and/or fixing to
    Texas vs OU
    Texas vs Missu
    Texas vs OK st
    Texas vs Texas Tech
    Texas Tech vs Ok st
    Ok St vs Missu

    Fixing to
    OU vs Texas Tech
    OU vs OK st
    BU vs Texas Tech
    ??? vs Missu winner ???
If any team can go undefeated in the B-12 They earned a shot- looks like we could have several quality 1 loss teams and a huge BCS- Cluster-F

"...incest, incest is the best...put your sister to the test..."

That how y'all do it out West?

I don't give a damn how y'all figure out who the B-XII rep will be....just don't pretend your getting laid, when you're banging your sister.

You get ONE team in the BCS-NCG. Only one. We--or some other deserving confernce--will provide the other.

Beat them, and we'll give you props for getting laid.

Make it with your own....and you can expect the rest of us to turn away in disgust.

No conferece should have two teams in the MNC game-agreed
    - remember all the tOSU vs Mich rematch B/S-
Texas has already beaten OU and already played every decent team in the conference- I'll be happy with whatever game they go too and no way is Missu #2 they could be #1 but I kinda doubt it right now #5

The last time the the BCS changed was in 2004, removing all weights and ad hoc methods from the system and using a simple average of three components. They outsourced the dispute of why the rankings are the way they are. It is not the BCS, it is the outside polls and computer rankings.

Human polls account for 2/3 of the ranking and it may be that voters would not allow this. It is fairly obvious the computers would favor a Big 12 South rematch and the voters would not.

With a single loss Alabama would fall below where Utah would rise to with a win over BYU. This is also about where Texas Tech would fall to with a lose to Oklahoma and a win. The scenario presented is a possible case, where the standings could conceivably produce the results. The events needed to guarantee 3 big 12 teams are as follows:

    0) Texas beat Texas A&M and Texas Tech beat Baylor
    1) Oklahoma beat Texas Tech and Oklahoma State
    2) Missouri win the Big 12 championship
    3) Alabama lose to Auburn and Florida
    4) Florida lose to the Citadel or FSU
    5) USC lose to ND or UCLA
    6) Utah lose to BYU

The road to get a Big 12 south rematch in the NC is much lighter.
    1) Texas Tech or Oklahoma win out
    2) Texas wins out
    3) Alabama loses to Auburn or Florida
    4) Florida loses to the Citadel, FSU or Alabama

    BP:

Perhaps I was misinformed about official changes to BCS formulae, but I stand by my assertion about an undercurrent. T'was that same "undercurrent" that prompted the BCS computers to tap UF over Michigan in '06. The BCS system is afterall, a function of human beings casting votes. It may be a bunch of hoodoo voodoo thrown into a big pot, but at the end of the day....the primary ingredients are human beings (writers and coaches) casting votes for the best teams.

If the mighty Big 10, with all it's press support couldn't do it, no one else can.

Of course, that's just my opinion--I've been proven conspicuosly wrong twice already this morning alone...I'm on a roll, baby!

Good thing they aren't announcing the BCS today!

Remember Mich/Ohio State two years ago, Mich. thought they should be in the championship game verses Ohio State rather then LSU, but we know how that turned out. Just like Mich. that year, your should be required to atleast win you own conf. title prior to playing for a NC.

Go to a playoff system like all other sports and settle it on the field where it should be settled

That was Florida in 06, LSU was 2003.

And yes, the never-ending whining from the Michigan fans was too much to take.
  • Bevo_Boy · 1 year ago
Mich thought they should be in instead of Florida, not LSU... well, maybe LSU, too, but they didn't have a valid argument then
  • hrposon · 1 year ago
I think it's a sure thing that the AP will crown someone other than the BCS Championship game winner in protest.
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
I could see the SEC champion vs an undefeated Utah as an AP championship game in this case.
  • Zac · 1 year ago
Without question, it's time the B(c)S got with it. This year's occurrence may be as rare as the 2004 debacle involving Auburn, but it exists none-the-less. Currently, the Big 12 has 3 (Count em; THREE! - heck, maybe even 4) teams in its Southern Div. alone, all of which are worthy to play in a BCS bowl; all of which are arguably more worthy than those teams offered by most of the rest of the "Big Six" conferences, let alone those None- B(c)S teams, which are arguably eligible.

Should OK beat OK St in Stillwater, and go on to beat MO in the Big 12 championship, it would be a travesty for either TX or TX Tech to be left out of the BCS bowl picture. Even if OK St won, and either TX or TX Tech went on to beat MO in the Big 12 championship, it would still be a travesty for any 2 out of OK, TX, or TX Tech be left out of the BCS bowl picture. Call it ludicrous; call it utter nonsense; call it down right stupid. There isn't enough rhetoric to state the unvarnished truth, that to do so would be just plane wrong.

We all know about the friggen rule which blindly dictates a maximum of 2 teams from any given conference will be allowed to accept BCS bowl bids. There's also the NCAA rule which dictates a conference must have a minimum of 12 teams before it can entertain a conference championship game. However, there's nothing to this rule which limits how the conference arrives at the 2 teams which are to represent their respective divisions in a conference championship.

So, I say to you; Big 12, you've got an opportunity here. Thumb your nose at the B(c)S & NCAA and have yourselves a conference play-off. AND, while everyone's at it, have yourselves a Happy Thanksgiving.

It is just amazing after watching the Oklahoma - vs- Oklahoma state game last night. I did not know that there was so much bias as for what I witnessed first last night. Here we are in the middle of the game and ESPN decides to call and air and project and politice the Texas coach , Mack Brown, reasons for them to go to the big 12 championship game instead of Oklahoma. What an unprofessional approach to tv gaming and to the states schools during the game. I remember that Mack Brown saying a year ago, ..... " When we play Oklahoma and win we just go on and do not think about it every weekend "..... Grow up Mack... And as for what some Texas fans did as advertising with the plan banner flying all day long, that was just -plain low . That was as about as low as one gets other than ESPN politicing for Texas during our great bedlam game.. I would tell ESPN on the next game day to just pack a bag and get out of dodge. We do not do that to people around here and you are not welcome. A great game last night to both schools, other than ESPN allowing it's sports broadcasters to campaign for Mack Brown and the Texas fans by tv in the middle of our game. How rude and unprofessional is that everyone.

I've been down this road every year for the past 55. If you really want a real nc you have to have a play off when you use human polls coaches, sportswriters all you windup with are x number of opinions filled with predjuises( sorry no spell check.) voters tend to favor regional and conferance teams.Hell I would too. if I had a vote it's called bening human.. excep for a few of the great teams of the past it's hard to say with certainty who had the best team that year. Personall I know OLK. & Miami havehad a few.

P.S if you don't make it to a bcs bowl any bowl will work if you get a good opponit.
