Fanblogs.com: Big time recruiting battles: Texas - Oklahoma

  • Tommy_Trojan · 11 months ago
Thank God that we didn't have to recruit his momma. Oklahoma can line up his momma at defensive tackle and let's see how she does. We just got rid of that Hazelton dude and his daddy. I guess Mustain's momma has learned to let her boy take his lumps. I think that Mustain is gonna be the best QB that we've had here in a while. It isn't gonna have anything to do with anything that his momma did. Hazelton chose to give up. A striking character defect in my opinion. He wont be playing on Sunday's and Mustain probably will be.

McFarland's momma isn't gonna be there in the trenches to help him. There is a whole new ball game coming up. I like the fact that Texas laid off. What do they need this "momma's boy" for? What do they need this headache for? Oklahoma has been recruiting the top DT's for the last few years. These guys are not living up to there expectations. Meanwhile, Texas has taken guys from nowhere and through outstanding weight training programs, produced the best DT in America. Likewise at Southern Cal, we've taken both Sedrick Ellis and Fili Moala (both very underrated recruits), and made them both into outstanding DT's who will both star on Sunday's. I don't see this as any kinda cue for Oklahoma and Texas, LSU and USC are much better off that this guy is going to Oklahoma. Who cares, really?

And furthermore, momma goes for the oldest trick in the book, schmoozin' some woman. My Lord! How lame is that trick? And, she actually goes for it! Her baby boy is gonna go off to college to play ball for some coaching staff, who looked at the momma like some high school girl in heat, while all of the other interested coaching staffs were probably wanting to talk football.

This is comical. Reminds me of that Three Dog Night song, "Momma told me not to go". Hilarious! The guy got all shook up because he saw some girls doing some bad things? All the more reason to move out to Hollyweird then IMHO. Oh, and the boyz at Southern Cal were ridin' around in Hummers, and momma didn't want her precious baby boy exposed to that sort of thing? Say what? The whole idea is to get this clown into the NFL so that momma can have her own limo. She better make a quick call to LeBron James' momma and get her head fixed quick. At least LeBron's momma knew what the score was. This woman went for the oldest trick known to mankind. And, I really don't think that a degree from Oklahoma comes anywhere near close to a degree from Texas or Southern Cal. So, education is a load of crap also.

Nope. Coach Shipp has promised her that he will not let any of those dirty girls get near her baby boy, and that when McFarland gets to the NFL, she won't have to share any of that money with any of those nasty girls.

I gotta disagree with you. Recruiting is always about winning the living room - just ask LaMar and Denise Griffin.

The family is a huge influencer and those who don't recognize it, don't recruit well. Oregeron knew it and lived it. As I recall, he did OK recruiting for yall.

Saying USC, Texas & LSU are better off without one of the best DL recruits in the nation kinda sounds like sour grapes - just saying. But... as you said... who cares, really?

SoCal grapes--like in the sniglet thread...

    Kevin:

I wasn't even aware that we would care about this guy. We have several outstanding DT's getting ready to play. This guy probably couldn't even play here. We've had several of these highly regarded guys who never got on the field. We do alot better with the 4-star guys who know that they have to work their butts off to get on that field. Guys who never got on were: DE Jeff Sweiger (5-star and transferred), LB Josh Tatum (5-star and transferred), SS Antwine Perez (5-star and transferred), WR Whitney Lewis (5-star and transferred), DE Eugene Germany (4-star and transferred), WR Derrick Jones (5-star and transferred) and QB Rocky Hinds (4-star and transferred). I can go on and on and on. There have been about 30 of these guys in the last few years who could not make it here. Many of them had problems wanting immediate playing time and did not want to compete to get it. Most all of them had transferred to lesser programs - and never got to play on Sunday's anyway. They probably would have gotten drafted had they just stayed here. But, they all wanted something for nothing. I say - oh well. Who cares? There are no sour grapes, as this guy McFarland would have never beaten out Jurrell Casey or Armand Armsread or Nick Perry for a starting job.

I'm not so sure that McFarland has made the right choice. Both McCoy and Granger have not lived up to their #1 ratings while playing at Oklahoma. Meanwhile, Texas has put out the very best tackle this year, while both Southern Cal (Ellis and Moala) and LSU have put out tremendous DT's in the last few years. If I really wanted to get the best coaching for DT - I think that I might head to LSU actually. I know that TE thought that they would land this guy. I thought that they should have. Playing DT in the SEC is probably what you would want to do - if you wanted to play on Sunday's. We'll see.
  • Kevin @ Fanblogs · 11 months ago
Regardless of what you saw in McFarland, the USC coaches offered him. I'll leave it to you to question their motivations.

As far as Sooner DLs in the NFL... C.J. Ah You, Dusty Dvoracek, Kelly Gregg, Jimmy Wilkerson, and some dude named Tommie Harris. That's six DLs, versus... oh yeah... six Trojan DLs. LSU also has... wait for it... six.
  • Tommy_Trojan · 11 months ago
    Kevin:

I have no doubt that Southern Cal has seen his potential. All we're really doing right now is judging what the upside might be. He's rated # 1 because his upside could be spectacular. Doesn't mean that he's gonna achieve it though. Many others will excede expectations. It's all a crapshoot right now. It's hard for us to get kids out of Texas anyway. We've gotten a couple - but generally they are going to Texas or Oklahoma anyway. Sounded like he might have wanted to come and play with the best - but momma knows otherwise.
  • OU_Ron · 11 months ago
You can bet if he would have chose USC, Texas, or LSU, They would all be talking about what a stud this guy is and what a great catch he is...
  • Tommy_Trojan · 11 months ago
    OU_Ron:

I probably would think that it was okay. But, the momma thing has me a little leary. We took Mustain and he has worked out though. Hazelton's daddy was a joke. Vidal Hazelton caught fifty balls as a soph (in 2006) - but could not get open deep. Ronald Johnson came in and his speed was very apparent. He did stretch the defense. Going into 2007 Hazelton was still a starter, but got injured (badly sprained ankle), and Johnson emerged as a spectacular deep threat. Hazelton wasn't healing fast enough, Damian Williams emerged as a 3rd recieving threat, and Hazelton's daddy started blaming the trainer's for not getting his boy healed up fast enough. He actually portrayed it as if we kept him hurt so that he couldn't get to play. Eventually Hazelton asked to redshirt because he could not get his job back. Coach Carroll refused and I don't blame him. Had he relented, we would have lost all three of the top recievers after the 2010 season (Damian Williams, Ronald Johnson and Vidal Hazelton), and that had just happened after the 2006 campaign and was just too much to overcome. Hazelton's daddy talked him into transferring, rather than fighting to get his job back, and now Hazelton is considering Missouri and Illinois I believe. The guy could not get open as a 2nd and 3rd reciever here - and now he thinks that he's gonna go and be a # 1 somewhere else. He'll draw all the double teams and never be open. It was a real bad move on his daddy's part.

Ron, I was seventeen years old and wanted to join the Army, and although my parents did not think it was a smooth move - they signed the paperwork. A year later I was in Viet Nam. I learned everything in those three years. To hear about how these guys momma's are cryin' because they can't decide what "life of luxury" they want for their boy to have - just kinda rubs me the wrong way. There are some real tough decisions in life. These young men need to start deciding some things for themselves. I'm glad that Oklahoma got a good recruit and I'm not envious in the least. It just spells trouble when the parents are actually trying to control where a young man needs to carve out his own way. Don't be too surprised if there aren't problems here, when Shipp and Stoops, actually expect for this young man to work for his job. We all know the drill here. Once these guys are all signed up - it gets real different out there on that practice field. There isn't gonna be any cryin' to momma on that day. And coach Shipp isn't gonna be e-mailing momma everyday either.

Tommy, no one knows how much of that story is real, it might be all true, half true, or none at all........the fact remains that there was some pretty damn good schools that was after him...if it works out...great, if it don't, I bet we still field a good team, as I said before, time will tell.....
  • Tommy_Trojan · 11 months ago
    OU_Ron:

That's it - Oklahoma is gonna have several other good DT's wanting that job. It's not gonna be any cakewalk getting a starting position at Oklahoma. Either way Oklahoma is gonna be just fine also. We had the #1 Tight End (Morrell Pressley) verbally commited and he changed his mind and went with UCLA. Claimed that Norm Chow was gonna lead him to the promised land. Problem is: UCLA doesn't have any QB's and haven't had one since Cade McNown left. The fact is: he really doesn't want to compete with the other Tight Ends and would rather have a job handed to him. If I were a TE, I think I'd rather have guys like Sanchez, Mustain, Corp and Barkley heavin' the rock at me than whatever UCLA is gonna put on the field. Again, it doesn't matter at all, and the guy will become a non-entity in the PAC 10. Oh, he might make the Pro's, but he'll never have an impact on a USC-UCLA game. In fact, no matter who our TE is, he'll always make more grabs than the UCLA TE ever will.

Or maybe Mustain's mama wasn't quite what people thought.
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 11 months ago
Laws, sausage, and recruiting: three things that you really don't want to know how they're made...

I feel slimey just reading that article...
  • OU_Ron · 11 months ago
I don't know anything about recruiting, but on the surface, it looks like an assistant coach did a better job than all the others.......time will tell if it's right or not
  • thebuckstopshere · 11 months ago
I have just come across some video footage of coach Stoops in-home visit, take a gander.

Mama McFarland: Texas fools-ball is the devil!!!!
  • TigerEducated · 11 months ago
I have multiple children, including one son that is in jail for conspiracy to commit murder less than 24 months ago...

My other son is a top flight high school recruit that is trying to choose between lots of top flight programs...

I'm worried about the fact that hostesses sat in recruit's laps at LSU...and that made a bad impression with me...

I wonder...What kind of impression did the Guilty Verdict on your son have on you, Ms...Oh, wait...It's not McFarland...I wonder why?

That sounds like an EXCELLENT reason to put something in print about LSU for...Considering your circumstances, you skank...

I can tell you all one thing...I've gotten a few e-mails last night and today...The sh!tstorm that's coming from Austin & heading towards Norman couldn't catch a nicer lady in the crossfire...

Evidently, Big Game Bob was the only guy who had enough of a stomach to "$tay in the game" to get JaMarcus' commitment...

I think that's an utterly classless move on this broad's part, and like I said...I can't WAIT to see her face and hear her whines when she gets what's coming to her...

OU fans...Be careful what you ask for here, folks...
  • Kevin @ Fanblogs · 11 months ago
There's all kinds of talk any time a school loses a big recruit to a rival. 99.995% of the time there's nothing to it. Time will tell, I suppose.
  • TigerEducated · 11 months ago
Let me say this...He will be a marked man in the state of Texas, as will his parents.

The Red River Shootout is going to be a terrible game for him, yearly...

Lord hope he never faces LSU...

There's some things you just don't do, lest someone accuse of not having good sense...

There's an old Italian proverb that says, "The fish either swims-or rots-from the head."

Much like my Gump brethren's namesake, "That's all I have to say about that."
  • OU_Ron · 11 months ago
" Lord hope he never faces LSU..."
Why TE, because he said recruiting hostesses was sitting in recruits laps, a little extreme, don't you think.......sure there's not another reason...
  • TigerEducated · 11 months ago
You don't talk out of school, Ron...

Like I said earlier...You've got a son in jail for conspiracy to commit murder, but you're telling folks LSU had hostesses sitting in recruits' laps (I'm SURE that doesn't happen anywhere else, LOL) offended you and gave you the wrong impression?

Ron, that's pure idiocy on your part if you're the mother, and it tells you a lot about the person giving the quotes, as well as what level of credence you can give to the advice she gives...

Look, congrats on getting JaMarcus...Be careful what you ask for, though, Ron...
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 11 months ago
She's only got one last shot at straightening out her brood, even if it is a Hail Mary with JaMarcus...

But, we will have no part of girls sitting in laps. That could lead to dancing...

Anyone else get a giggle over Stoops setting the table, finishing off a plate of ribs, then enjoying a screeening of Beauty Shop? I guess for $4M a year, that's part of the deal...

It's disturbing how much attention is laid on these 18 year olds. Guess they better enjoy it while they can...
  • OU_Ron · 11 months ago
Just personal preference, between hostess lap sitting, offer to be on the presidents leadership class, taking a tour in a stretch limo, or partying down with topless and bottomless girls, I'd probably be a Longhorn ;-)
  • 1Tomcat · 11 months ago
WEA He made his choice and momma's happy right.
The last time we heard this much stuff about a recruit choosing between Texas & other schools the recruit chose LSU and LSU has since cut the guy. Maybe your right a bunch of fuss over nothing, they are afterall just kids and maybe Mamma knows best.
Although he will probably regret his decision after Texas beats OU repeatedly year after year-LOL
    Hookem-Horns
PS maybe he doesnt like girls sitting in his lap??or free alcohol and victory parties with topless & bottomless hotties
He chose the team that needs him the most, after all the Sooners are going to need all the help they can get .
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 11 months ago
Perhaps bring in the Chippendale's guys for him?
  • 1Tomcat · 11 months ago
WEA that's purty funny right there-I don't care who you are. When I was that age many moons ago- Think I woulda chose the winning program with the free alcohol, naked women etc etc.
    To each there own?? LOL
  • NMLSooner · 11 months ago
TE, I'm pretty sure I read a quote on here from you being excited about the possibility of getting this kid to LSU when Bent Venables was being interviewed for the Clemson job. I just wonder if you'd be bringing up his brother if he was coming to LSU.
  • hrposon · 11 months ago
Sounds like he's already been to Big Red Sports / Imports...
  • OU_Ron · 11 months ago
    Spoken like a true Texan...
  • hrposon · 11 months ago
No one is going mistake this kid for Myron Rolle.
He needs to talk to someone that can give him some good advice. Apparently Stoops didn't think of that or he didn't listen.
He just put himself under the microscope. Time will tell.
  • OU_Ron · 11 months ago
You could be right, but the same thing could be said about the other 3 coaches, they were all after him like a dog in heat..right ?
  • TigerEducated · 11 months ago
The other three coaches backed off, according to the article itself...

The same cannot be said...at all.
  • OU_Ron · 11 months ago
TE, show me in the article where it said the other coaches backed off, it said Texas backed off because of implied wrong doing by Texas on the internet....and only then so they could document their recruiting process...where at in the article ???
  • TigerEducated · 11 months ago
The part where Mack Brown said they were backing off via e-mail, perhaps, Ron?
  • Jason · 11 months ago
The article only states that Texas backed off. Mack Brown backing off does not imply LSU or USC doing so.
  • 1Tomcat · 11 months ago
Na man, they have installed a timeclock now-
