Fanblogs.com: Bowden-Paterno debate to rage on

  • Regan · 11 months ago
One will die on the job, and the other one will retire after winning one more game than the other.

    Two awesome guys....
  • Zac · 11 months ago
Given their ages and over-all conditions, were I a betting man I'd have to say Joe Pa will die on the side-lines. (He may collapse and die later, but you get the drift.) Bobby Bowden, provided it means that much to him, will coach until his team has won one more than Joe Pa's, or maybe he'll go ahead and finish the entire season before retiring, or maybe he'll surprise the majority of us and retire after the finish of a given season, whether he's won more games than Joe Pa or not. When he does eventually retire, God help us all, he'll probably pass away before June that following year.

When this happens, I can promise you I won't be thinking about any records. I'll be too busy crying in my soup, given the loss this will be to all of college football. We all joke about how we can't wait till next season. This is one circumstance for which I am in no hurry to witness. May God bless them both and their respective families.
  • Regan · 11 months ago
    Nostradamus died standing up. [True]

JoePa will die pacing the sidelines, and no one will figure it out until the game is over and he doesn't go home.

Bobby Bowden will die the following week after taking the pacing JoePa's lead.

God willing, none of these events will happen for at least 20 years.
  • gatorhippy · 11 months ago
Zachary, have you forgotten our agreement in this matter?

    I assuredly hope not...
  • Zac · 11 months ago
GH, nice to hear from you. You don't come around as often you used to. (By the way, I discussed your play-off proposal on another thread; hope I got it right.) As for our agreement in this matter, as you can see, I spent a lot less time regarding the motivation for their continuence, and more time as to where they may be when they depart this earth...a concept I don't relish in the least. So, rest assured, I have not forgotten. Hope you are well throughout the holidays.
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 11 months ago
I'd be afraid to give either of them a one-year car loan, much less some lengthy contract...

Boy, somebody might've been able to put a certain coach-in-waiting to good use this year...

I hate to dwell on semantics, but neither is the winningest coach in CFB history. One is the winningest coach in FBS or Div 1-A history; the other one's Div 1-A wins are lacking considerably...
  • Zac · 11 months ago
"I'd be afraid to give either of them a one-year car loan, much less some lengthy contract..."

R U kid'n me? With the value that each of their estates would have to be, you'd be scared? Now, I realize, were one of them to take out a new or used care loan, then parish, that you as the loaner would have to wait for estate settlement to resolve the lien. Still, it doesn't seem as though that would be something in which you'd lose.

Besides, isn't an insurance policy required to be taken out in the event the loanee passed? I imagine it's different with each state, but my 1st wife had to take out such a policy through the dealership from which she bought her car. When she died almost a year later, they paid on the policy to cover the loan. It was enough, unfortunately, to put that particular insurance company under, so, I suppose that type of business is risky, but there still should be no risk to dealer or bank. Care to comment, War Eagle?
  • Regan · 11 months ago
Meh, both are CFB head coaches; they could both buy cars with a side order of fries...
  • TigerEducated · 11 months ago
Joe Paterno is an embarassment to college football.
  • jake · 11 months ago
That statement sure lacks depth. I guess you'd probably prefer Chizik over Paterno, right?
  • TampaGator · 11 months ago
If Paterno is an embarrasment to CFB, then Les Miles is an absolute disgrace.

    "...have a nice day..."

    GO GATORS!!
  • TigerEducated · 11 months ago
He'll have to console himself while gripping the BCS National Championship Trophy he won last year...

I'm sure he'll need years of therapy to juxtapose his position in the pantheon of coaching...

I'm also sure he won't have to sip hot cocoa in the booth and worry about whether he's still got enough mobility to make it to the sh!tter before he has an accident, or if he really should start considering Depends...

He can't even be set out to stud, anymore...

Someone call the Producers of Weekend At Bernie's...I've got a script I wanna pitch 'em!
  • TampaGator · 11 months ago
Your fetishes with Joe Paterno, Nick Saban and Urban Meyer are pathetic....

...and flattering all at the same time!

Damn--to earn the disdain of the *legendary* "Tiger Educated" (who dat?)--is to be in great company!

    GO GATORS!!
  • TigerEducated · 11 months ago
Consistent, thoughtful, pithy, factual, nuanced opinions are now "fetishistic"...

    Thanks for the clarification...
  • NMLSooner · 11 months ago
You mention factual. Does that pertain to JoPa's coaching or lack there of that you seem to mention quite often?
  • TigerEducated · 11 months ago
JoePa's a joke...I mean, seriously...how can he sign a 3 year extension with Penn State when he's only got a 2 years left on his contract with God?

Seriously...If any of you think this guy has had a meaningful impact on a game in years, I'd love to see you mention it here.

Seriously...When's the last time you watched a meaningful Penn State Game (I know, it's been awhile), and you said to yourself, "I wonder what JoePa's going to do in this situation?"

    Case closed...

The guy is not the coach. He has not been the coach. If you are perusing the cocoa stand in the pressbox, and tasting the food & drinking the Hot Chocolate-DURING THE GAME-then you sure as sh!t ain't coaching it...
  • gatorhippy · 11 months ago
A statement cannot be both "opinion" and "fact" at the same time...
  • TampaGator · 11 months ago
    Right.

....and your schtick don't stink, either.

    GO GATORS!!
  • NMLSooner · 11 months ago
And YOU are an embarrassment to blogging!.......If...there is such a thing.: )
  • NMLSooner · 11 months ago
JoPa said he would have taken offense to that comment, but he couldn't hear you with all the Roses he has stuffed in his ears.
  • TigerEducated · 11 months ago
Those aren't roses...Those are wax-encrusted hairs that are stuffing his ears...

    Geezus...
  • Zac · 11 months ago
And thow calleth me a "character". I have to wonder if you really believe much of what you write, or if you write for the shear pleasure of the fallout you get following the explosion. Dust thow measureth our reactions on the Richter Scale? (You izn't a shrink, iz ya?)
  • TigerEducated · 11 months ago
Zac, a large amount of what I write is to be considered "schtick"...Or, taken with a grain of salt the size of Texas.

It's pretty easy to tell what I think is fact, what I have convictions about, or what is laced with a massive dose of superfluous, verbose, and bellicose hyperbole...

Joe Paterno has always made me ill. Always. But, this continuing on and on and on is just a damn joke to me...

Go be with your family...Spend time with your grandchildren. But, don't tell me that his "job" as head coach at Penn State isn't farcical...It's a lie of the highest order.

It's disingenuous to give him credit for these victories, and his tired, contrived act of actually being the man with the plan, a guy that influences the outcome of a game is amazing to me.

His level of hubris-even at his advanced age, and with his lifetime of service to school, University, and his fellow man, should be enough...But, no...Some idiotic record is driving him to stumble back out time-after-time, like a punchdrunk fighter, whose had welps opened up over both eyes, swelling them shut. He "lost it" rounds ago, but evidently, NO ONE that loves this man has enough love for him that they'll tell him its time to give it up...
  • gatorhippy · 11 months ago
JoePa's position is no more farcical than Bobby's...
  • TigerEducated · 11 months ago
Bobby wasn't the subject of this post...and at least Bobby's still ambulatory, and has made a plan for succession...

JoePa's glasses are so thick the observatory at Mauna Kea is jealous of their refractory powers...
  • gatorhippy · 11 months ago
If Bowden isn't the subject of the post then why is there a huge Nole logo next to the link and also tagged for FSU Football, TE?

JP knows his kids by name, makes less than half a mill a year and is still involved in the day to day planning and running of his team...

Bowden sits to the side, shakes hands and dreams of eating pudding, retiring to the beach while occasionally getting in the "real" head coaches way and calling his former OC to make sure he's still getting his severance check while Bowden himself collects 2 mill a year...
  • TigerEducated · 11 months ago
...and is still involved in the day to day planning and running of his team...

I await with baited breath a link or some other information that will back this claim up...

It should be pretty easy to find...

    Don't worry...I'll wait...
  • NMLSooner · 11 months ago
Isn't the burden of proof on you? Your the one making claims contrary to the public comments that are made by those who would know. Maybe you're right, but until YOU produce the proof I will assume JoPa is involved in the day to day planning and running of his team. What hard evidence do you have?
  • TigerEducated · 11 months ago
How many head coaches decide to coach from the Press Box, and then talk about how great the Hot Chocolate was after the game to reporters?

Am I taking crazy pills here?
  • The_Observer · 11 months ago
I think you are most likely correct, but I agree with NMLSooner, the burden of proof IS on you since your stated opinion is contrary to the majorities perception.
  • TigerEducated · 11 months ago
    Observer...Once again...

    Just answer the question:

How many head coaches-ON ANY LEVEL OF THE GAME-coach from the pressbox?

Thanks, I'll hang up and listen...
  • The_Observer · 11 months ago
Dude, I don't even care about it, I'm just telling you that the burden of proof is on you, but them.
    Their waiting.
  • The_Observer · 11 months ago
    *not
  • gatorhippy · 11 months ago
    I'll answer it...

The ones that are told to do so by their physician...

Like Paterno was by his doctor due to his impending and subsequent hip sugery...
  • gatorhippy · 11 months ago
Most focus pieces you read on JP are full of descriptions of his presence at practices and often quoted by players and asst./positional coaches alike about his involvement and uncanny ability to see things from nearly two field widths away...

Look through Maisel's archives over at ESPN or just put in the search engine yourself, Tiger Lazy...

    Meanwhile...

If you look through Carter's archives over at the Chopping Block at the O-Town Sentinel, you'll read where Bowden is often a no show at practices and has recently been quoted in admitance of having little to do with the d2d ops of the Noles...

    But seriously, TE...

It aint court, but don't be lazy...

Do your own research and show me how I'm wrong...
  • Zac · 11 months ago
Your pont's well taken. AND, I guess that counts me among those who apparently don't love him enough. Thing is, if he didn't want to continue, and we all pushed him, that would be one thing. Despite his motivation - what ever it be, HE still wants to continue. No body's pushing him. Whether or not he's actually the one making the decisions on the side-lines or not, at least he thinks he is. To him, rightly or wrongly, that's all that matters anymore. As he's already said once, "What else am I gonna do at my age, hunt?"
  • gatorhippy · 11 months ago
Bobby continues to fiddle as Doak slowly burns to the ground...
  • WarEagleFan · 11 months ago
I personally think that they both should hold the record in a tie because we will never again see a coach that stays with a team as long as they have ever again. They are legends not only to thier teams but to the whole country. May GOD bless both of them and may they be allowed to coach as long as they want to.
  • Skip1 · 11 months ago
I agree with this comment. If JoePa can keep churning out 9-win seasons with a BCS invite every third year, let him coach until he croaks.
  • Eye_of_the_Tiger · 11 months ago
If Penn St. holds off USC in the Rose Bowl, i would say his newly signed 'mascot' contract is well deserved.
  • TampaGator · 11 months ago
"...Paterno's agreement...may be extended (or shortened) at the discretion of PSU & Paterno..."

ESPN reported the same thing last night. So here's my question (rhetorical):

Can't all contracts be amended at the discretion of ALL of the parties???

How's that even news worthy? Hell, the Constitution of the US can be amended with just a supermajority...

...heck, folks have even taken liberties with the Bible!

(...and I'm pretty sure they didn't get ALL parties to agree so such changes....)

Ok, a bit off the rez....but the point stands.

What exactly does Patrerno still do at Penn State? The resume says he's the coach. It's hard to believe that he's anything more than a figurehead. Bowden is still a few more steps from the grave than Cryptkeeper Joe. But he might want to consider heading down the same path. Niether of these guys does what Urban Meyer or Pete Carroll does.
  • lbu828694 · 11 months ago
JoePa still coaches, ask any player on his teams the past couple of years.
  • TigerEducated · 11 months ago
Coaches them on what? How to get your Medicare-Plan B perscription filled without a hassle at the Campus Medical Center Pharmacy?

How to angrily run people off the road and pull the Dana Carvey "Angry Old Man" routine on 'em?

Lay down the pipe, and give this man the exit he deserves.

If you love this person, be kind enough to tell them its time to walk away...
  • Ben Prather · 11 months ago
Here is how you are supposed to field a kick...

    OOOWWWW, MY HIP!!!!!!!
  • USC1801 · 11 months ago
Bottom line: They are winning. The fan base is happy. The players are happy. The valley is happy.

By the way TE, will you call for his removal or the OC/DC's removal if they start losing next year? Seems to me everyone was after JoPa's head when they were only winning 3 or 4 games a few years back. Why do you suppose that was? Could it be because he is the head coach and the responsibility for the team falls on him? If you are going to hold him responsible for the losses, then you better be prepared to give him his due when they win.

And don't tell me he wasn't past his prime back when they were only winning a few games a year. We all thought he was.

Could it be that he knows how to run a football program?

I'm not JoPa fan but if it works for them, so be it.
  • Zac · 11 months ago
    Well said. Well said indeed.
  • GatorMatt · 11 months ago
I'm reminded of the movie Office Space, when the 2 Bob's were interviewing the fat guy. "What exactly is it that you do here?"
  • Mr2Bits · 11 months ago
If pooping your pants is cool consider me JoPa
  • NMLSooner · 11 months ago
Wha? Man, that came out of left field.
  • Mr2Bits · 11 months ago
Saw it on a Gameday sign when they were at Penn State. My fav. of the year.
  • Porcine · 11 months ago
I'm more familiar with Joe Pa than Miles Davis anyway.
  • NMLSooner · 11 months ago
My favorite was at USC: "Tebow helps 3rd world countries, the SEC schedules them"
  • Mr2Bits · 11 months ago
USC trojans or USC cocks? If it's the trojans I don't think the Pac10 should be talking about schedules

Another good one was the Missouri game that had a shark bite on cut out of the corner of the sign and said: Chase Daniels ate my other sign.
Never gets old making fun of the booger eater
  • NMLSooner · 11 months ago
well, of course it was SoCal. S. Carolina wouldn't dis their own conference. And the proper response to the scheduling dig is to say: Tebow helps 3rd world countries, the Pac-10 has them join their conference.
  • Wardboy3 · 11 months ago
I saw that one also..I laughed so f-ing hard. I had to start texting people what I just saw. BRILLIANT!!
  • TigerEducated · 11 months ago
Folks, pay attention to this one...

This is a FINE specimen of a QUALITY BLOG COMMENT...

Observe and commit it to memory...
  • Zac · 11 months ago
Yeah, if you like plagiarism. He even addmitted to it; it wasn't his idea.
  • TigerEducated · 11 months ago
    *sigh* a lack of originality...

    At least mine are fresh...
  • Eye_of_the_Tiger · 11 months ago
I liked the FLA vs ALABAMA game....

FLA Fan had the poster of the year:

SACKS IN THE CITY- SARAH JESSICA JOHN PARKER WILSON (with a wig glued to the picture of him on the poster)--HILARIOUS
  • Bama_Babe · 11 months ago
Clever sign, but too bad JPW was only sacked 17 times this year....

    ;)
  • Wardboy3 · 11 months ago
Is that supposed to be good? Fla St QB Ponder was only sacked 17 times.
  • Eye_of_the_Tiger · 11 months ago
I guess it's not bad. Not to mention FLA only got one sack in that game. The sign was still hilarious.
  • Bama_Babe · 11 months ago
Considering Alabama was ranked 22nd in sacks allowed, it certainly is not bad.

Btw, FSU's o-line allowed 24 sacks, tied for 65th....so you tell me if 17 is good.

But let's not get off topic here. Go Old Guys!! ;)
  • OU_Ron · 11 months ago
Where is OU ranked, really....they have to be pretty high...???
  • Bama_Babe · 11 months ago
Yep. OU is 4th with 11 allowed. FYI - Florida is 19th with 16.

Paterno's (trying to keep with the thread ;) ) Nittany Lions are 8th with 12 sacks allowed.
  • Zac · 11 months ago
Since you brought up Penn St's sack ranking, howzabout USC, given the Lions playeth them soon?
  • Bama_Babe · 11 months ago
USC ranks 31st, with 17 allowed.
There are 8 teams in between Alabama (22nd) and USC (31st) that have allowed only 16 sacks, but Alabama is ranked above them because they played a 13th game.

Interesting stat: Air Force ranks 1st with only 3, and Arkansas brings in the rear at 119th allowing 46 sacks on the season.

Btw, I watched the 1979 Sugar Bowl today on ESPN Classic today. I think JoePa still wears the same glasses now that he did then. The only difference in then and now was his hair color and his sideline presence.....
    ;)
  • Zac · 11 months ago
Didn't Bama win that one by, like a TD or less? As I recall, Bama moved the ball all over the field on Penn St, but for some reason they just couldn't finish. So, throughout the entire game Penn St was in it. They just couldn't get over the hump (Bama's "D" wouldn't let em.). Sound right to you?
  • Bama_Babe · 11 months ago
That was the famous "Goal Line Stand" game. Penn State had it first and goal and got down to the half yard line on 2nd down. Bama stuffed the run on two straight plays to hang on to the lead with about 5 minutes left in the game. #2 Bama would beat #1 Penn State 14-7 to win the NC.
  • Ben Prather · 11 months ago
That sounds like what I am expecting this year, only with a sub for Penn State...
  • Zac · 11 months ago
I'd like to see the 2 of them tied at the end of a regular season, their teams be invited to the same bowl game, where they would settle it once and for all.

Oh, I suppose better still would be for their teams to be tied at the end of a regular season, they get invited to different bowls, and both finish out winners.

Sorry, can't make up my mind on this one.
  • Ben Prather · 11 months ago
After 20 over times, Bowden and Paterno agree to a tie.
  • Zac · 11 months ago
I'd be a wreck after 4 OT's (Shades of Louisville/WVU-2005, and that was hardly the longest.). So, I think we'll go with scenario #2 above. Worse comes to worse, provide they're both still alive, we debate it again the following season.
  • Regan · 11 months ago
    Yup...that's a toss-up....
  • TampaGuy · 11 months ago
Better to finish as a winner and on top then not, right?
