We are starting to accrue home and homes with teams but in the Big 12. I would love an invite to the Big East or any other BCS conference but we are geographically challenged and not to mention in the heart of SEC country.

It's The Talons, be careful what you wish for. Some weeks back Kev posted a thread discussing S MS being ripe for the picking. His article even featured some interesting quotes from the school's President. The Big East has been revisiting/reconsidering conference expansion. The 3 top teams which keep surfacing in the rumor mill are C FL, ECU, and S MS. (Marshal, Navy, among others, have also been bantered about.) ECU has had quite a history with playing current & former Big East teams (Miami, Syracuse, VA Tech, & WVU, among others). If S MS begins to take on more home/home relationships with Big East teams, this could be the start of something big.

I would say it was the sudden changing of the guard. Petrino went, and with him went the program. Kragthorpe has always been an outstanding OC, but not necessarily the best when it comes to HC. He's certainly not defensive minded, and that's what's been killing this team.

Ron, don't remember if I mentioned it or not, but outstanding win against a good team. I knew Cinci would hang with you guys for a while, but that 2nd half, friggen amazing.

Now, then, you remember the thread involving rumors of the Big East possibly inviting S MS to join. This could be precursory to that premise. Watcha think?

As a Mississippi native and USM alum, there have been debates about this until people are blue in the face. The truth is, Ole Miss and Ms State will not schedule Southern Miss anymore. There reasons for this are; there are no advantages to scheduling Southern Miss, they can acquire an extra home game with a lesser quality opponent, USM's stadium is not big enough, etc.

I would like to play both teams but it is all just wishful thinking. If one thinks we are scared to schedule SEC teams check our track record from previous seasons. Honestly, Southern Miss is trying to acquire more home games (instead of playing road games for cash) to please fans and increase our marketibility to our region, recruits and alums. I hope in the future we schedule the two schools up north but the ball is in their court.

Well, USM could challenge for apparent state superiority--maybe that's what the SEC teams fear. With an easier C-USA schedule to play, USM could beat them one year and proclaim themselves 'state champs' and get a leg up on recruiting.

Good for USM, but I think they ought to concentrate on scheduling games with the two major powers in the state, Ole Miss and Miss State. They have a good opportunity to make it a three-horse state if they can consistently schedule some games to prove themselves. They haven't played Ole Miss since 1984 and MSU since 1990. Believe it or not, they actually own the series against the Bulldogs.

The shake-up last year with Jeff Bowers showed that maybe they are looking ahead. I think they should try like mad to schedule the two SEC schools down the road and see what they can do.

A "step back" is playing two IAA opponents each season on a regular season. SoMiss may be a CUSA member but at least they are a quality opponent. Let's talk about some other teams that play junk teams every nonconference year.

Maybe Kragthorpe ought to try and lose that Tulsa mentality. A great game against Southern Mississippi is a bad game in my book. Heck, Louisville couldn't even play a great game against Kentucky - or at least it wasn't even competitive. I have been wondering what happened to this program so fast. Maybe it is the Conf-USA mentality that was brought along with Kragthorpe. If so, Louisville will probably not be returning to the Top 25 anytime too soon. I think that a better situation would have been Missouri or Tennessee. Some team like that in close proximity - which may have enhanced recruiting.
