The big time schools are easy to evaluate, Carroll, Stoops, Brown, Tressel, Saban and Meyer stay where they are and build upon great programs. The ones you are trying to spot are a lot harder to measure. Some are great coaches and and some are great recruiters. The problem is that they don't stay long enough to really measure them until they get to the big time.
You're right about Briles. I know the Ags don't want to see him and Griffin anytime soon :-)

Sounds like something a pr guy for ND would say. I didn't notice anything mentioning the Syracuse game, maybe he had coach of the year wrapped up until that loss (please understand that this sentence is to be read with a HEAVY dose of sarcasm.

Wow- good post, what about the smartest coaching moves
Briles @ Baylor - the 09 schedule looks similar to 08 they open with Wake and the following year TCU. Robert Griffin will be gone by the time they face the Irish. If Weis is still around-highly unlikely then ND might have a slight chance against the Mighty Bears who are going to emerge victorious against the golden domers.

Charlie Weis is the poster child for making sure that you have the coach you want lined up before you fire the current coach. Impatient powerful alums force the ADs to make big time mistakes.
Auburn is this year's winner of the Texas A&M R. C. Slocum dumbest coaching change award.

Very simple, they lost to Syracuse and that at-large Hawaii team playing in the Sugar Bowl had the NCAA all-time passing leader and had June Jones as the coach. and just because they played in the game doesnt necessarily mean they belonged there. (google Oklahoma in 2003, 2004)

If the Hawaii Bowl is an early indicator of next year, Notre Dame may not be the joke of a team they have been the last two years. While I have enjoyed kicking them while they are down, it may not last much longer.

Appreciating the hyperbole of the OP, the success in this game may very well carryover into next year. Then the HC's chair at ND may cool down to a more comfortable level.

I'm being a little bit facetious - but not much. The SOS is still considered into the BCS computers - but the real culprit this year was the # 5 ranking given by the pollsters. Nevertheless, a strong Notre Dame team, could have given us a game that could possibly persuade some voters. In the last two years, what should normally be a decent game, has become a routine beatdown - of a team that is not considered to be any better than Stanford or Fresno State for that matter. There just isn't any style points to earn. I would rather face a real good Notre Dame team, than a bad one, since it is always gonna be traditionally on our schedule. The least Notre Dame could do for all the money that they are rakin' - is to put a decent team on the field.

SOS seems to be little considered now. It is all about preseason rankings and what time of year you lose. IMO had USC lost game one this year (virgina was it?) they would probably be in the championship game (over the big 12 choice). Even though losing to Oregon State away is more of a quality loss. People say Auburn 2004 was left out do to the Citadel, nope it was due to starting around rank 20. What preseason rank was USC and Oklahoma that year? 1 for USC I'm pretty sure... Oklahoma having played in the previous years BCS championship game was fairly high too I would guess.

I could not help but notice. It probably cost us a possible two shots at a National Championship game - because our SOS was not up to par.

This one is a real reach and I'm not even gonna try and inject any humour here. You can't get coach of the year awards for engineering a nose dive - and then rebuilding it back up to halfway back to where it was at. Maybe next year - if Notre Dame climbs to ten wins or more.
