Clemson could justifiably give Swinney a ridiculously cheap contract with a cheap buyout because he's a newbie. That would enable Clemson (although they would never say it publicly) to try out Swinney for a year or two (while they build a war chest), and replace him if he doesn't pan out. But I think he pretty much has to win out in order to satisfy the boosters and have credibility with recruits.

Re: Clemson coaching search to begin in earnest

I also rewatched the game on DVR, and I agree about Harper's throws. He also seems to be staring down a specific receiver too long. And Clemson is damned lucky that he didn't get intercepted one more time on that dangerous long throw into blanket double coverage.

I could see the FSU game going either way. If Clemson shoots itself in the foot with interceptions and penalties, it'll be a long day. We can't turn it over 4 times to FSU and expect to win in Doak. If Clemson plays well, I think Clemson has a decent chance. Clemson really needs to contain and sack Ponder. He's slippery like Skinner, and I'm afraid he'll scramble for first downs like Skinner did to Clemson. Hopefully the defense is now healthy enough to stop him.

Re: Clemson coaching search to begin in earnest

just another band wagon usc fan

Re: Clemson coaching search to begin in earnest

I agree with both of your statements. I think Korn is still injured. I've heard that he will play more against FSU, and I certainly hope that's true. I actually watched the game twice, once in regular time, when I was nervous. The second when I was calm and level headed via DVR. All 3 of Harper's interceptions were not hurried or forced in any way. He just flat out made terrible throws, and in terrible places on the field to boot. I don't know what's wrong with him, but he doesn't look good. There were a few times where he looked like the Harper of old and made good throws, but he's far too inconsistent. I probably shouldn't, but I feel pretty good about the game Saturday.

Re: Clemson coaching search to begin in earnest

I'd take Leach over Muschamp any day. And I think Leach effectively made that case Saturday night. (Great game!) But I think it's more likely that he'll be ordained king of Lubbock, than come to Clemson-- especiall if he wins the Big 12, let alone an NC.

Harper's 3 INTs were unforgiveable, as they have been throughout the season. I just don't understand how his passing could have degraded so much since last season. He has no chance at the NFL. It's time to try Korn-- especially against FSU's over-pursuing defense and pass rush.

Re: Clemson coaching search to begin in earnest

I agree. Patterson has a scary side, and to find it look no further than 2004. Petersen's resume just seems so eerily similar to Bowden's. Really, all of the ones mentioned seem to have a tremendous potential upside, but flashes of a scary downside.

What was your take on Muschamp vs. Leach tonight and how that could turn out for us?

We can certainly stop talking about Graham/Malzahn now. That loss to the Hogs was rather pedestrian.

Man, that game in Chestnut Hill was a little too exciting for me. If we could get Harper to stop throwing picks, and figure out how to punt better than a middle school team, we'd be pretty good. Everything other than that looked a lot better. CJ has really emerged as a leader, and it appears as if Davis is fading off into the sunset for whatever reason. It really seems to me that when we utilize Tyler Grisham, we win, but maybe that's just me. I'd really like to see Korn as much as possible for the rest of the season. The way that Harper threw those picks for seemingly no reason, it wouldn't break my heart to not see him again this season. Anyway, it was a good win, and hopefully we can get at least 5 more.

Re: Clemson coaching search to begin in earnest

OK. I didn't do my homework, and I stand corrected. Patterson had a couple of good wins over BCS teams (and losses). Thanks for compiling & posting the data.

But again, unless Petersen didn't do any recruiting since he arrived in 2001, then I don't think it's exactly fair to say that Petersen has been winning with Dawkins' recruits. BSU's current (undefeated) 2-deep has several freshmen and sophomores, including their RS freshman QB and their second leading RB (sophomore). But apparently BSU hasn't really beaten anybody besides Oklahoma.

Texas's leftovers are probably 1000 times better than Idaho's finest, so I'm not buying the argument that Patterson did-more-with-less argument.

But Patterson did have a couple good wins. On the other hand, he scares me because his teams have been up & down and good & bad against the BCS. That reminds me of another coach that Clemson recently had; a guy who was a big fish at a little pond at Tulane.

Gotta love Swinney beating BC!

Re: Clemson coaching search to begin in earnest

First, it's Chris Petersen. If you want to support him, I'm sure he'd prefer that you got his name right. Secondly, the guy became the head coach in 2006, so that's hardly enough time to build a roster on your own. That's almost exactly the same amount of time that Bowden had with Tulane before coming to Clemson. Let's see....

Petersen at Boise State:
2008 - beat Oregon, haven't lost yet and probably won't because their schedule is worse than Byrnes High School's
2007 - beat no one that matters, lost to Hawai'i, ECU, and Washington
2006 - beat Oklahoma, Oregon State, and Utah
2006 was done all with Dan Hawkins' players.
If our schedule were littered with the Louisiana Techs, Hawai'is, Southern Mississippis, and San Jose States of the world, then I'd say sure, let's take him. The reality is that it isn't. So, to me, he hasn't proven enough. Does one win with someone else's guys really qualify you to be the head coach at Clemson? It shouldn't.

Patterson at TCU:
2000 - 10-2 record against a bunch of no one cares
2001 - 6-6 with losses to Nebraska, Texas A&M
2002 - 10-2 with losses to Cincy, ECU; wins over Colorado St. Northwestern, Louisville
2003 - 11-1 with losses to Southern Miss, Boise; wins over Navy, Vandy, Arizona, S.Florida, Cincy
2004 - 5-6 terrible season, blowout loss to Texas Tech
2005 - 11-1 with wins over Oklahoma, BYU, Utah, Iowa State
2006 - 11-2 with losses to BYU, Utah; wins over Texas Tech, N. Illinois Colorado State
2007 - 8-5 with losses to Texas and MWC top teams; win over Baylor
2008 - 8-1 with loss to Oklahoma; blowout wins over Stanford, BYU

Now, consider that he did all of this with a Texas team that has to take a back seat in recruiting to the Big XII powers both in state and to the north. His current recruiting class rivals Clemson's. I don't think that his record is sparkling, but to say that he's never beaten anybody outside of a tier-2 conference is extremely wrong. He has even beaten Oklahoma, which seems to be Petersen's claim to fame. If you'll look at his resume, Oklahoma is hardly the only one from a BCS conference. The others may not be that impressive, but Texas Tech isn't too shabby. My point is that if you compare Petersen to Patterson, it's no contest.

I'd love to have Rodriguez, but that's not even worthy of discussion, since the probability is so low. Bill Cowher is a joke of a rumor. I hope Leach stays as far away from Clemson as possible. I would take Gundy, but he's probably set where he is. I'm not a big fan of Kiffin because I don't care to see the WC offense at Clemson, but if he's better than I think he's proven, then fine. I don't really have a problem with him. I'm just not convinced at all. I like Graham but that's really only because I like watching his team play. The guy isn't qualified at all, but I'd love to see an offense as electrifying as that wearing orange in Death Valley on Saturdays. Bud Foster might be a good one. He's certainly proven himself on the defensive side of the ball. Butch Davis would be good, but probably wouldn't jump ship from Chapel Hill right now. If it were up to me, I'd love to keep Swinney as head coach, and have him hire Bobby Bentley as the OC, and Bobby Johnson as the DC. I know that won't happen, but I can hope.

For me, the bottom line is this. Petersen is not as good of a hire as Patterson at all, and there is a lot of history to back that up. Kiffin might be alright, and so might Muschamp. So might a lot of other people. I just really don't want to replicate the Bowden hire, and that seems exactly like what Petersen would be.

Re: Clemson coaching search to begin in earnest

Kiffin earned his job as OC at USC by being a successful tight-ends & receivers coach, and by being the passing coordinator. Kiffin had a higher winning percentage than Norm Chow. Carroll selected him. Kiffin was widely considered the best recruiter in America during his years at USC. I'd say Kiffin has proven himself at least as well as any coordinator that Clemson is considering.

Peterson has been with Boise St. since 2001, so I'm sure he's been winning with many of his own recruits. That includes a conference championship and a Fiesta Bowl win over a superior Oklahoma team. Peterson also earned his way to the head coaching position. As wide receivers coach at Oregon, his receivers set school records. In his 5 seasons as OC for BSU, his offense finished in the top 15 four times (top 10 three times) and he was two-time Broyles award finalist.

Aside from Bill Cowher, Rich Rodriguez, Mike Leach, Mike Gundy, or some other head coach that Clemson can't get, who do you think has proven themselves more than Kiffin or Peterson? You seem to like Graham, even though he hasn't even won a C-USA conference title yet, let a lone beat anybody good. And you seem to like Patterson, even though he's never beaten anybody outside of a tier-2 conference. That kind of success reminds me of Tommy Bowden's success at Tulane. Your reasoning seems inconsistent.

Re: Clemson coaching search to begin in earnest

I'd be down with that...

Re: Clemson coaching search to begin in earnest

Yeah, wouldn't that be nice....

...or Rodriguez

Re: Clemson coaching search to begin in earnest

Yeah, I'd really like to see Swinney win out in conference, FSU take 1 more loss, Maryland take 3 more, and Wake take 2 more. Then I'd like to see him beat Spurrier, then win a bowl game. Of course, this is a lot to ask, and it will probably not happen, but if he can do that, then we can just keep him.

Re: Clemson coaching search to begin in earnest

How exactly has Kiffin been proven? He was the OC at USC. Wow, that's a tough job. Petersen seems way too much like a repeat of Bowden's prior record. You might ask what is a "party fan". A "party fan" is one who knows nothing much more than, we lost, Coach ruined the after game party. Party fans do not know football. They know, "win party", or "lose party". They only love the win parties. No other factor is considered. Fans like these, I wish on all you other guys.
How do I know this?
