Fanblogs.com: Clemson interviews Lane Kiffen

  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
    I'd take him.

I'm pretty pleased with TDP so far with this coaching search. I'm glad to see now that there is another major player (Tennessee) in the game, that he's getting out there and going after guys.
  • TRIPPA06 · 1 year ago
I have heard and read a lot of great things about him... everyone (many Clemson fans on message boards) are so intent on having someone with local ties, but I personally don't think that is such a big deal.
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
Those fans will get over that, and just about anything else if W's start piling in.
  • TampaGator · 1 year ago
Another son of a "made man".

I hear the kid talk, and he just doesn't command respect. He's a kid; he looks, walks, talks, sounds...and just overall presents like one. I'd say that probably has a lot to do with his futility in Oakland, and I wouldn't expect much more at the college level.

...his ol' man on the other hand....that guy COMMANDS FREAK'N RESPECT!

    My $.02.

Interesting point. I'll be honest--I had never heard of him until the start of this CFB season. Why is he everyone's golden boy? I watched a few videos of him on youtube and I see what you mean...

    Interesting article here:
    http://forums.palmettofootballtalk.com/eve/foru...

"Bucs defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin is in the crosshairs of some powerful Clemson University boosters to join the team as its defensive coordinator beginning in 2009, Joe has learned.

So long as his son, former Oakland Raiders coach Lane Kiffin, takes the head coaching job there.

Through a source with strong ties to Clemson movers and shakers, Joe was informed of a meeting of Clemson boosters held Wednesday at the school and that many big-moneyed Tigers boosters want to throw considerable cash at Lane Kiffin to replace recently resigned coach Tommy Bowden.

The trick is the offer will be a package deal: Lane has to bring his father Monte with him.

One of the reasons the school negotiated an early release for Bowden earlier this week was so the program could get a headstart on acquiring a top candidate.

The decision to go after the Kiffins was met with some resistance, Joe was told.

Rumors still persist in Clemson’s neck of the woods that Monte Kiffin, as coach of North Carolina State in the early 1980s, blew the whistle on then-Clemson coach Danny Ford for various NCAA recruiting violations which led to the football program being placed on probation.

Some of the influential old guard Clemson boosters want nothing to do with Kiffin as a result, but they are a vocal minority Joe was told. A number of former Clemson players who logged time in the NFL are pushing for the Kiffin package."

    Here's another from a Buc's fan:
    http://www.joebucsfan.com/?p=1983

If Lane will bring Monte with him, that'd be one heck of a package. That might be the type of "big hire" that we're looking for. Now if they'll keep Dabo as the OC, that'd be the best case scenario for me.
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
Dad working for son? How do you think that would work out?

Give me your top 3 wish list, Joe, no matter how unrealistic...

I was curious to find this little blurb from Tony Barnhart about who might be a good fit at Clemson... At least he has the orange down pat...
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
Wow that is a lot of orange in that article.

I don't think it would be a problem (dad working for son) as long as son didn't try to interfere with the way dad ran his defense. LOL. I don't know really. I guess they'd work that out before they started.

My top 3 is hard man but I'll give it a shot, and try to keep it semi-realistic.

1.) Rich Rodriguez w/Swinney on staff
2.) Lane Kiffin w/ dad as DC w/Swinney still on staff
3.) Dabo Swinney w/new OC and DC

As you can see, I'm a big fan of Swinney being a Tiger. He's a killer recruiter and is just great to have around the players. I'm not sure that he's 100% ready for the big time yet, but I'd hate to lose him.
  • Zac · 1 year ago
    CJ

1 - Clemson won't be able to pull Rodriguez from his "once-in-a-lifetime" job.

2 - I can see Lane Kiffin as Recruiting Coordinator, and his dad as HC, but not the other way around.

3 - I don't know enough about Swinney to weigh in, except that for all intense and purposes, he's just a kid (comparatively speaking).

Bud Foster, provided he's actually willing to leave VA Tech, without a doubt, is Clemson's best bet right now; so long as he picks the right DC & OC and leaves said respective positions in the hands of each; not micromanage (especially the defense). JMO.

    CJ

Monte Kiffin would definitely give Lane some of the cred he loses through his youth. I certainly hope this doesn't happen--we love Monte around here--but it's definitely a smart play by CU (kinda' reminds me a bit of Jeremey Foley "romancing" coach Meyer's wife--not literally, but winning her over by introduing her to Mrs. Billy Donovan--they hit it off famously, and the rest as they say, is history...).

By the way, TG, you referred to Lane KiffIn (above) as, " Another son of a "made man"." As you were referring to Lane's dad, Monte, I think you meant to say, "self-made man". This guy has worked his way up through the ranks. While he may have had some help along the way (Who doesn't?), I'd have to say he's paid his dues.

If Clemson went with the Kiffin duo, I'd take them as Monte - HC, and Lane -AHC/Recruiting Coordinator. Monte retires in 3-5 years, and son (another coach-in-waiting) takes over. Given the predominant success pattern of NFL coaches transitioning to college, I'm not certain I'd make this move at all, were it available. JMO.
  • TampaGator · 1 year ago
    Zac:

No, I meant "made man"---it was a "mafioso" reference, I thought you of all posters, would've picked up on that--b/t/w, if you find that offensive, my apologies--let me know, I'll refrain from similar refrences in the future. (Bobby Bowden of course, being the other "made man").

I agree with you that Monte as HC with Lane as CIW, would be preferable, but Monte has repeatedly proclaimed his disinterest in HC position (tried to word that a proactively as possible, if your wondering about the wording). So I don't think that's a realistic option.

...and I absolutely agree about the transition--the only reason Monte considers this move, is to help his son out.

b/t/w: remeber his name came up for Nebraska job? He shot that one down without hesitation, and he had strong ties to Nebraska. Prestige and money wouldn't take him away from Tampa...

....family is a whole different deal though...

Good look for Clemson, plus I believe Kiffin has something to prove to Al Davis.
  • Regan · 1 year ago
It would be a bit bizarre, to say the least; a father and son both coaching and no one's name is Bowden....

I don't know about LK, since I don't follow the No Fun League; what I have heard is great though.

I've always been in favor of an 'up and coming' coach; I just don't know what would be best right now...there's only one Pete Carroll....
  • TigerEducated · 1 year ago
I see Kiffin as a top flight offensive coordinator...Or a head coach at a mid-major of some sort...

I think a lot of folks see him as a guy that's a great mind and its obvious he's got enthusiasm to go along with it. I think he's about 3-4 years away from head coach level maturity.

I mean, let's be honest...he's about a year and a half older than I am...

Who wouldn't want to coach a program with fans like this?

From Coach Jagodzinski, Head Coach of the Boston College Eagles:

    "Dear Clemson fans,

On behalf of the entire Boston College football program, I would like to thank you for the prayers, concern and good wished expressed for our wide receiver, Clarence Megwa, since his serious injury in our November 1 football game. We have received dozens of emails from supportive Clemson fans inquiring about Clarence's condition and wishing him well.
    ...
We were touched but not surprised by your classy display of concern and support. Tiger Nation should be very proud. Thanks again from the Eagles."

Maybe so...and so be it...I went ahead and deleted the post anyway, as I just wanted to leave it up long enough for you to read it, to make a point.

  • Lennie Collins · 1 year ago
What point was that? That you are afraid to "man" your remarks! If you were bad you would have left it up!
  • TampaGator · 1 year ago
The point was to illustrate the childish immaturity of playing silly little word games with the name of a school, or its mascot...its colors...

I removed the post because I call others out for doing that crap all the time (in fact, that's what that post was, essentially--calling you out for that crap).

Read into that what you will; you always do anyway, and...you always get it wrong, anyway.

b/t/w: I'm replying to you, aren't I? That would be "manning my post"...

Mine is Sanford and Son's theme song. I loved ole Redd Foxx.

    Back on topic....again.
Yeah he is younger than us man. I think he'd be an excellent selection for Clemson though. The fact that he was in a lose-lose situation in Oakland was no surprise though. Al Davis is too eccentric for that place to have success.

I read the point below about them wanting his dad Monte to be part of the deal. I guess if you're gonna dream, dream big. I just don't see him giving up an NFL job that he's highly successful in to come work for Jr. Stanger things have happened though.

Gentlemen & Ladies -- Lane Kiffen to Clemson or nada. On topic, please.
  • Tommy_Trojan · 1 year ago
I'm not so sure. I don't see any conflict with "pops" workin' for Lane. Lane seems to have a great young mind. Pete Carroll hired him to coach the QB's and to run the offense. He worked hand in hand with Norm Chow. His pedigree is most excellent. There really isn't a better one. Monte is one of the best at what he does.

There is the Tennessee job after all. We're all not really sure about Auburn either. Either one of those two positions would be way more "challenging" than the Clemson positions. Those two opportunities don't come along very often. I'm not saying that Auburn would consider something, but that if they were going to, then now would be the time. All of these coaches and AD's are always involved with each other. A head coaching position in the SEC would be something that the Kiffen's might be more interested in. Remember, that USC loves to recruit the Southern states, and is making great inroads there. Lane Kiffen would share many of the fundamental strategies of Pete Carroll where it comes to recruiting - and he is very good at it. I would guess that he would prefer to have an elite SEC school to use as a recruiting base if given the opportunity. I'm just saying that it would not be his 1st choice to go to Clemson.
  • USC1801 · 1 year ago
I don't know if that assessment takes into account the fact the ACC is improving in football. And as it improves, so does the chances we'll see an ACC team as the NC in the next 5 years.

If as ClemsonJoe has said, Clemson is willing to pay 3 million per year, it might be enough to lure a coach away from the competitive SEC. Consider, too, that all they have to do is win the ACC conference, and the sweet smell of success will surround them, which will equal more money and the opportunity to build a "dynasty" in their conference.

I guess what I'm saying is that it would be an easier road with much of the same benefits as the SEC. But I totally agree with you, the SEC is the better football conference, and the history and recruiting advantage are still factors to consider.
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
Good points. However Clemson usually hangs pretty well with the SEC in recruiting. Wasn't it this past year that Miami was #1 and we were #2? I could be wrong though. Anyway, usually we end up going head to head with SEC schools for our bigger recruits and we win some of them. Although, that was with the previous staff, so we'll see how the next one handles it. I would think that it would be very possible for the next coach to continue on this year's staff's successes on the recruiting trail.

Anyway, it's been said, albeit by an agent of a lot of coaches, that coaching at Clemson would be like coaching at an SEC school without having the play in the SEC. The fan base is there, the money is there, and the tradition is there, but you actually get a weaker schedule. However, with the ACC looking like it is improving as a whole, that might not even be so true here in the next couple of years. Only time will tell.

Who knows. I just want to get a coach that's going to be a good one and who will stay for a while.
