Fanblogs.com: Cowboy up? Christensen redefining Wyoming football

  • Porcine · 7 months ago
    Change.
  • Zac · 7 months ago
    It is inevitable.
  • Ben Prather · 7 months ago
This has strong echoes of what Urban Meyer did for Utah. Wyoming has potential to earn a bowl bid regularly.

I am glad to see Wyoming get a much needed focus on discipline. Hopefully the positive attitude can infect the fans. Wyoming is notorious for having fans that boarder on unsportsmanlike.

Another strong MWC team is good for the conference. Can they beat Texas or Colorado? Not likely, though I am not sure Texas is used to playing at high altitude with garbage swirling around the field...

SDSU is another program in the MWC I am waiting to see signs of life from. If the MWC is the conference they think they are the bottom of the conference needs to win most of their OOC games. They can't be losing to Cal Poly.
  • Zac · 7 months ago
If Montana St. can beat Colorado, Wyoming certainly can.

Wyoming has beaten a number of mediocre to good BCS teams over the past 10 years. Christensen just might be able to bring them on par with the Maryland's or North Carolina's of the world. Even if he can't get the recruits, if a kid with potential is looking for a chance to play, when the better teams don't come a call'n, there are always places like Wyoming.

I still think the MWC needs to pick up Boise St, Houston, & Tulsa. JMHO...

Thanks Ben- Yes the Cowboys are a team that the Longhorns can not overlook-see Tenn- on the road hostile environment- Hey if the Horns win- then they should have- if they lose- upset- Hey this game looks like a purdy good matchup to me -heck on the road against a great conference team- shoot
can't wait- after all the Longhorns are weak. Look we hear that sh-t every year.
Looking forward to the game. BTw too bad it aint Utah-Wow

How Wyoming got you all to travel to Laramie is beyond me.

    Who is Tenn?

I think it's when the Vol's played UCLA in 08 and lost...
  • Ben Prather · 7 months ago
    Vols...

Nope no memory of that team...

What did they do? Have they been to a BCS bowl this century?

    (This in a Wyoming thread...)

No thread is complete without an SEC team in it !!

    Ben:

Wasn't Michigan a big deal for Utah last year, even though they sucked out loud? Why might that be, Ben?

Could it be that they're one of 4 or 5 programs that can fill a stadium up with 100,000+ fans every single homegame? The others of course, being OSU, Penn State, USC (not really every week, but...), and...

    Tennessee.

Could it be, that Michigan--like Tennessee--is a blue blood football program that earned its (their) cred long ago, and established a name(s) for itself nationwide, long ago?

Whatever, right? Let's just pretend that Tennessee doesn't matter---especially when Utah has to borrow fans from Alabama to sell out a BCS Bowl game---in a year in which they went UNDEFEATED* no less....

...just keep peddling the that MWC cherished notion (read: fallacy) that attendance, fan interest, profitability, moving product...none of that matters in college football--it's only and all about who can field the best team...

....as you speak of Coach Meyer and Utah in the past tense; you know--because it doesn't really matter if you win at Utah, or Florida, or Wyoming....or Tennessee...

    'sall the same.

    GO GATORS!!
  • Ben Prather · 7 months ago
Sorry, I can't help kicking a team while they are down. See my posts on Notre Dame the past year.

What did the Michigan win mean to Utah? I thought Michigan was better than they were at that time but the conclusions are still valid.

As part of my efforts to improve the BCS I included a revenue sharing concept to Charles Bloom of the SEC. The first team from each conference earns that conference 9 million, any additional teams and independents get 4.5 million and the rest (54 Million) is split according to the sum of the average home attendance of each conference's members. Of corse I avereged this number over 4 years.

C-USA and the MWC are underpaid by about 3 million a year by this method, the SEC, MAC and WAC are underpaid by about 1 million, the Big 12 Big 10 and Sun Belt are paid about right, the PAC 10 and ACC are over paid by about 2 million and the Big East is over paid by about 5 million.

C-USA actually has more fan base, based on attendance figures, than the Big East and the MWC would pass them with the inclusion of Boise State.

I wish the BCS did rely more on attendance, fan interest, profitability and moving product.

It is based too heavily on the size of the TV market with too little focus on the saturation of that market. Does it matter that your school is in New York City if the people of New York City don't care? Is SDSU the most valuable team in the MWC?
  • cowpokes · 6 months ago
Utah got screwed on National Title Game! Hell they walked all over BAMA and BAMA was ranked #1 for how many weeks and was undeafeted till SEC title game! They beat BAMA more than Florida did! Take the #1 out of each conferance and have a bracket that has single elimination and you got your title game! Then do what ever you want with all these damn bowl games!
  • 1Tomcat · 6 months ago
Didn't them Cowboys come into Neyland and beat them Vols perhaps 07 I cant remember
  • Zac · 7 months ago
TC, I agree; TX can't just ride into Laramie and expect to come away with a win. The Cowboys will be up for this game, and I suspect, early on, the Longhorns will have their hands full. I also suspect that'll be about the end of it; your boys will still come away with a solid, however hard earned, "W". Remember; you heard it here 1st.
  • 1Tomcat · 7 months ago
Ya your right Zac-aint no automatic W
The game is up there and you got to earn the win
These type of games are what the media call trap games- Bullsh-t
These are two teams head to head- at their place
I know those Wyoming boys are going to give it a 100% and you expect that from every opponent against Texas. For every team Texas plays you know this is like their big shot to pull off the big one- purty cool for Longhorn fans.

Okay, I clicked the article, but holy cow, you expect me to read all that--about Wyoming?

Just give us a multiple choice exam at the end, Kev!
  • Dustin Draper · 7 months ago
Yeah, Wyoming fans are out of control!! Especially when playing teams from Utah (of course can you blame them with the onside kick Utah pulled a few years back?). I'm real excited to see how well the three new coaches in the MWC do. I think Wyoming New Mexico and SDSU all got great new coaches. Especially SDSU, they really need to pull it together and a school like that has a lot of potential to be something similar to south florida. Hoke and Long could really do something special at that school.
  • Dustin Draper · 7 months ago
The key Wyoming game I'll be watching to see a new change in Wyoming will be the Colorado game.
  • Tyler_Tech · 7 months ago
I think they just need a LOGO change.....
  • fosterkeats · 7 months ago
Logo change??? They have one of the best ones out there...

I bet you like all the new striped/ swooshed/ tacky-as-hell uniforms???

    ?????

    I own a Wyoming Cowboy t-shirt...
  • Tyler_Tech · 7 months ago
No I respect old logos. I just automatically think it looks like a
high school logo. I'm a little biased because my high school used the
exact same logo except yellow. All in all IMO I don't like it.
  • fosterkeats · 7 months ago
    I totally understand...

I went to a catholic high school(being a non-catholic) and our fight song was Notre Dame's... I used to cringe as I ran out onto the field...
  • TampaGator · 7 months ago

Was it the music, or carrying that big 'ol tub of Gatorade that caused you to cringe?

"And then Christensen does something neither he nor any of the coaches he's worked for has ever done before...He starts practice all over again. From the beginning...

Like this is some kind of "new" approach to coaching???

    LMAO!!!

    Please...

    It's still Wyoming...
  • U.of S.C.1978 · 7 months ago
If we could get them to wear Wyoming logoed Snuggies, it would make a really interesting uniform thread.
  • Clemson_Joe · 7 months ago
Wyoming has possibly the greatest home field advantage in the country, with having the highest stadium in D1-A football. UVA certainly got a taste of that not long ago.

Honestly I can't stand their uniforms and I think it'd be great if they would change that, but whatever. Best of luck to them anyway.
  • Ben Prather · 7 months ago
Is it the Jaundic Yellow or the Cow Manuer Brown?
  • Clemson_Joe · 7 months ago
Both really. Great description of the two, by the way.
  • Ben Prather · 7 months ago
I get to look at them once a year...

There is little love lost between Utah and Wyoming. And that is from a zoob message board.

This post is an excellent introduction to the intensity of the three way rivalry. That said, there is no way the hatred of the pokes will ever compare to that for the team down south (whose name, nor a basketball team from near Louisville, should never be mentioned at a Utah message board.

    P.S.

Sorry Dustin Draper and any other BYU or Wyoming fans that might take offense, just educating these east coasters a little.
  • fosterkeats · 7 months ago
Wyoming hosts Texas this season on 9/12, they should have a capacity crowd of 34,750...

Thanks for reminding me- guess I need to get Versus? My uncle has it and he is an Aggie- aint gonna watch it at his house-kinda of a waste of good programing.

Any good sports bar should have it.

    EDIT:

This game is on Versus. This channel is on most local cable networks. Just flip until you get to either hunting, fishing or a rodeo.

Thanks Ben-- I have Dish network-a lot cheaper than my last provider- I've got the ESPN's- Fox sports and CSTV- no Versus
You mentioned good sports bars- I live in a rural area- no sports bars
    only ethnic beer joints
I'll probably find it at a friends house or something- thanks

Thanks for the info-Ya a packaged up my stuff in a bundle type of thing- cells, home phone, DSL & satellite TV all through the same provider- instead of four different entities- We are pretty happy with our services and We don't want any kind of upgrade etc. etc.
I guess I'll probably add it or change providers at some point.
We used to have cable TV and we had all kinds of stuff, but by changing companies our TV bill was reduced by 50% and we still get alot of good stuff. Versus is not on my current plan- its cool- I have relatives with Direct TV- I'm going to watch it no problem- Hookem-Horns

Hey Ben, how would you like to get your a$$ kicked? why don't you come on up to Laramie and I'll meet you outside of the Buckhorn and then we will see you run your little spoiled, rich kid mouth then.....you guys are always so tough on the internet, but when a real cowboy actually calls you on it, you shrink away and then call us names like hick or redneck as you drive away in your vehicle......it's funny how we get the bad rap for being out of control fans when it's your fans that are rude as hell when we come to SLC....and yeah, we have ugly uniforms and an old logo, but we love those ugly colors and we love that logo so much that it's our state symbol.....that logo comes from a soldier in WWII that used it as the logo for the Wyoming National Guard to bring our soldiers closer together and bond them with the pride that they were from Wyoming, and I was dang proud to wear that ugly uniform when I played at UW. We may not have many people in our state ben, but we are damn proud people and if you keep poking fun at us, you're going to end up getting your butt kicked and you know what.....you're going to deserve it!

15POKES15, maybe we (utah fans) act so tough on the internet because we figure wyoming fans do not know how to use the internet and is not not needed for people who only leave there leave their town once a year to utah to watch their team get routed. And as for spoiled? i would rather be spoiled then be a .500 program. (all in good fun)
  • Ben Prather · 6 months ago
First of all, Welcome to fanblogs... We need all the MWC fans we can get around here.

I would like to state that any disparaging remarks made towards Wyoming have been directed related to the fact that the rivalry between our schools is long, historic and intense. When coaches are acting in an unsportsmanlike manner you know the rivalry is intense.

The only thing I disparaged, really was the school colors. I have said nothing about the people here. I did link to a BYU sight that captured the typical Utah/BYU attitude towards Wyoming for educational purposes for those east coasters that dominate this sight.

Please don't take us too seriously, we pick on everyone equally. Just be glad your not from Alabama ... We are merciless to the fine folks of Alabama.

I have no idea where OU_Ron gets his information from. 83% of the stats on this sight are made up on the spot.

I am looking forward to seeing Wyoming become a bowl regular in the upcoming years. I really believe that the new coach may be the person to turn around an entire state, not just the football program.

Save the energy for the day you get into it with Tiger Educated.

    GO MWC!

Wow! You fellas are pretty original huh?!? Bareback mountain and cow manure references......dang, I guess you and your amazingly quick wit have beaten me into submission...what does being an ex, and I emphasize the EX, linedancer have to do with getting his butt whooped? I played 4th string Linedancer at UW, but that doesn't matter in a fight now does it because once you get kissed in the mouth, no one gives a S*&% what position you played in football....(and if he did play for the dolphins and he is making internet comments, he is a bigger loser than I originally thought!) sugar bowl champ, you should be embarrassed!! The dadgum Texas guy who types the word Yalle, incorrectly I might add, was funnier than you...So in closing, I would like to thank you for your attempts at quick wish, and I wit you luck in the upcoming season....unless you are a bozo fan, then you can kick my white trash ass!!

15pokes15 loosen up man! Its the internet! The Utah ass whoopin we got in SLC in 2007 we deserved thanks to Joe Glenn! Onside kick oh I saw it coming, as a coach you gotta keep you mouth shut about a guarantee or its going to come back and haunt you! New things happening in Laramie with the new coach! Excited to see what happens when his recruits come in and we have no more of Glenns players slumping around town! Anxious to see what 7220 will do to Texas, look what it did to UVA, especially with a fast paced Spread Offense!! OKLAHOMO! LOL For the Brokeback THEME running around, that film was filmed in Canada! To get from Wyoming to Canada gotta go through sheep country USA "Montana"!! LOGO change not a fan of it! This state evolves around that logo and not all of that has to do with the University! OH 15POKES15 you got it all wrong with the LOGO and WWII your thinking of the battle cry "Powder River Let'er Buck, We didn't Come to Play, We Came to Fight and F@^&!" For all you outer staters we say "Powder River Let'er Buck" before the team comes onto the field! To get the LOGO corrected here, the horse is Steamboat! The badest, meanest horse to ever live on the planet that was raised on a ranch outside of Laramie and the rider is Guy Holt! Colors well I like them, they are alot better than the Praire Gold that we used to have!!

Negative on the logo mistake, in Ranger school, we were required to do a paper about Army history and that was the story I chose to research, the logo and the war cry were both in WWII cowpokes, but I do commend you on getting the entire war cry right! Also, there is a heated debate on whether the horses name was Steamboat (I am a fan of this name) or Redwing. It was Guy Holt riding in the pic though.
And I am relaxed.....you should see me worked up! ha ha!
as for you ronny boy, we may not go to bowl games every year, but the last time we went......we won (2004), which is more than I can say about the sooners (2003). We also have a top 10 defense pretty damn consistently! Not too shabby if you ask me!
  • OU_Ron · 6 months ago
My apologies, I didn't realize that Washington....or Wyoming had such a great defense ( not sure which team you're talking about ).....maybe if Stoops sticks around a few more years, he'll be able to make the Sooners into a top 10 team..
  • Ben Prather · 6 months ago
    Little known secret:

The MWC is a defensive league. EVERYONE in the MWC has a defense.
  • OU_Ron · 6 months ago
Yeah, it would be tough to play a game without one.......you may not win any..
  • Ben Prather · 6 months ago
I meant a good one ... but you knew that.

TCU held Oklahoma to their second lowest point total in 2008. Though Texas also earned the mark, only Florida gave up less. Florida did this by keeping their offense on the field for extended periods of time.

Utah faced one of the best PAC 10 defenses (Oregon State) and a solid SEC defense (Alabama). By far the best defense they faced was TCU.

The MWC as a whole has focused on defense. Offense gets you to big games, defense wins them.

TCU will be much improved in offense this year. Look out.
  • OU_Ron · 6 months ago
Of course I do.......everyone knows that the MWC strikes fear in all the BCS teams.....why do you think the BCS won't let em in.....must be the defense !
