Fanblogs.com: Elsie taking aim at Gatorade?

  • 1Tomcat · 1 year ago
I look and here and realize that everything is connected
Elsie the cow is a trademark of Borden
Borden was a newspaper man in Texas who had to throw his printing press into the river during the runaway scrape as Santa Anna's troops were advancing during the revolution. He was later involved in beef processing and later developed canned milk, which at the time was a tremendous accomplishment. Prior to this ,cows had to be transported on transatlantic voyages. Borden was an experimental businessman who had the vision and ability to become independently wealthy through his perseverance and determination. These pioneering achievements occurred at a time before refrigeration and at a time when electricity was in its infancy. Its a good think that the Mexican army didn't capture Gail Borden, because he would have been assassinated and history would have been altered.
Now here we are over 150 yrs later on a college football blog, which has absolutely nothing to do with the Texas Revolution or the history of food preservation, except that Elsie the cow was used instead of Carnation or Oak farms etc.etc.
    Go Huskies whup OU

TC, good history lesson, I'm changing brands of milk!!!
  • Kevin @ Fanblogs · 1 year ago
And you thought I picked these things at random!
  • Zac · 1 year ago
    Good Stuff, TC!!!
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
TC, as a kid, I used to steal my mom's cans of sweetened evaporated milk and eat it right from the can with a spoon. Eating a whole can of that stuff would almost make me barf...

Had the Mexicans captured Borden, I'm quite sure we would have had Elsie the Goat...

    :-)

    I'll stick with Gatorade...

Milk gives ya' sticky goobers, and pickle juice just sucks.

    GO GATORS!!

Did ya hear about the Italian who died drinking milk? The Cow fell on him.

There was a time in my life when 2 gallons of milk wouldn't last 2 days. Then came a couple of really rough nights spent sitting upon the porcelain god (and I'm talking HOURS), where-by I quite literally came close to dehydration. I thought I'd die when our family Dr. said I couldn't drink milk any longer; that is until he told me I might die if I continued.

Though it doesn't taste quite as good, goats' or sheep's milk is better, and doesn't contain lactose. I've never had it with Nestlé's or Ovaltine; gonna have to try that.

I also recall some years back, there were health food stores offering Tigers' milk. Right!!! I'd like to know how they pulled that off.
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
I would imagine with a heavy dose of barbiturates and a cage.
  • Zac · 1 year ago
No wonder that milk was sooo popular, and expensive. . .
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
I can see milk being beneficial at restoring proteins in addition to electrolytes. It also neutralizes your Ph, so it could help maintain a normal level of acidity.

That is unless you are lactose intolerant, and it is very perishable.

As for pickle juice, it is more of a traditional source of electrolytes than Gatorade, hearkening back to at least the civil wars days.

As for alternative source of milk, while the extraction process may be nice, I hear the flavor leaves a bit to be desired.
  • hricane23 · 1 year ago
I refuse to partake in the FIRST game. I'm not even going to mention that I'm first.

And by the way, I like a cold glass of milk after a long workout. That is, if I ever worked out.
  • JB · 1 year ago
hey if you dont wanna partake, thats fine but you dont know what your missiing!!!11

I hate milk so this idea of chocolate milk is terrible, especially while it is hot outside
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
It all depends on where the milk comes from.

Now THAT would get the team fired up for the 4th quarter!
  • Ramblin' Gator · 1 year ago
I'm kind of curious about this pickle juice experiment at UGA.

Do they drink it from mason jars?

Are they wearing shoes while they drink it?

Do they where overalls while drinking it? A straw hat?

Do they spit out the chaw of Redman while drinking it?

    Dill or sweet?
  • Kevin @ Fanblogs · 1 year ago
    I know you're curious... dill.
  • Tom_Blogical · 1 year ago
    Kevin:

I've seen chocolate milk as a rival to gatorade story in nutrition class and some nutritional mags. It's definitely a tastier alternative. :-)
  • JB · 1 year ago
let me tell ya, there is nothing i ould rather drink when it is 100 degrees outside than milk''
  • Tom_Blogical · 1 year ago
Well, you are allowed to drink a glass of water prior to and after a glass of chocolate milk. Milk and chocolate syrup is still cheaper than Gatorade.
  • JB · 1 year ago
that is better but this still neaseates me
  • Tom_Blogical · 1 year ago
    LOL! I hear ya.
  • grcunning · 1 year ago
I'm a huge milk lover myself...
but coming off the field after a nasty two-a-day, and chugging chocolate milk sounds like a recipe for a yak-fest.
  • JB · 1 year ago
Doesnt it though, i mean how long can you really hold milk down when it is hot outside and you are done running and devoid of oxygen and wish you never played football (water is hard to stomach then)
  • Tom_Blogical · 1 year ago
LOL! At least it would be soothing coming up! :-)
  • JB · 1 year ago
yea, it would be the world's best twice tasted milk!!!!!!
  • Tom_Blogical · 1 year ago
Just so you know, I put this to the test today. I cut the grass today with a personal pace push mower, and then went through a conditioning workout. It took me 1.5 hours to cut the grass (2 bags worth), and the workout consisted of 8 cycles through the following 3 exercises: 10 medicine ball wood choppers, 15 medicine ball slams, and 10 burpees. That took about 20 minutes. It's 90 degrees in central Ohio today.

I drank water throughout and then made some chocolate milk after. I thought it was pretty good, and I didn't feel like yakking! ;-)

A good, cold Yoo-Hoo is hard to beat. I don't think that qualifies as a healthy electrolite replacer but damn they're good.

    Geaux Yoo-Hoo
  • JB · 1 year ago
ONce again i cant reply where i want to

thats cool that it works, in central louisana it is 100 with 106 heat index and 100% humidity, but i have been in the a/c all day ;)
  • jake · 1 year ago
Because some people can't understand the idea of a marquette fan who is also a college football fan, I am changing my name . . .

Has anyone heard or tried Muscle Milk? I've seen it at my gym . . . wondered if there is any connection.

On a side note, what do you all think about how Willingham is doing at Washington? I had a friend who was a receiver recruited by Willingham at ND and played 2 years under him, then 2 under Weiss. He loved Willingham and thinks Weiss is the devil. Any thoughts?
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
I've heard quite a few former ND players say that Weiss is terrible. I'm very happy to hear it. I hope they keep him for 30 years. I would also like to never see a ND winning season again. I think if they would just go ahead and secure Daffy...I mean, Lou Holtz as the AD, maybe they could bring my wishes to fruition.
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
Holtz reminds me more of Granny from the Beverly Hillbillies than Daffy Duck...
  • OU_Ron · 1 year ago
WEA, come to think of it, there is a strong resemblance.LOL
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
If you see him riding way up top in the bed of a 1920s Ford pickup, the mystery may have been solved...

Ron, how's fuel prices affecting HE sales these days? I imagine it's not having as big an impact as some might think, being that there are no hybrid dozers on the market yet. People don't have to commute with their Ram 3500, but there are no alternatives with the big machines...
  • OU_Ron · 1 year ago
WEA, it's slowed up some and prices are down at auctions about 10%, I don't think fuel prices has anything to do with it because the contractors just raise their bids to reflect the higher cost of fuel...
Housings starts and an unstable market IMO has a lot to do with it......
Sorry for the hijack Kev, open up an open thread please......
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
    LOL. That's great.
I kinda miss seeing old Lou driving his little brown Toyota around town. He is a very nice guy in person, and fun to talk to. However, I cannot stand hearing his analysis on ESPN, or his predictions. If the games went the way that Holtz wanted, Notre Dame, South Carolina, and Arkansas would play each other in a 3 way game for the National Championship.
  • Zac · 1 year ago
Jaker, it's not a question of you're having attended Marquette. It's a question of criticism coming from one whose team hasn't won a NC. My guess is the prevailing attitude is you can't know a thing about the game unless your team has won a NC. (I don't subscribe to that, by the way; some do.)

My suggestion: Criticize away, but make it factual (Watsa U basis?); make it constructive (Wata canna U do to imprrroova?) Udderwize, uze tawk'n smack, bro. Just FYI.
  • Howard · 1 year ago
with the record my Huskies have produced over the last 5 yrs...I'm not sure drinking chocolate milk is something ELSIE would want to brag about! Just win dammit!
  • jake · 1 year ago
There is no team I hate more than ND. My buddy who played there never said he hated his experience, but when asked he only said, "ND gave me a name-brand diploma. That's why I went there."

ND just hired a new AD today who is supposed to be a very good hire. They needed a good hire given the reputation of that job. I hope his experience uncovers the alumni corruption of ND athletics.
  • JB · 1 year ago
I hope Nd fails miserably in everything....just as a side question, why is Nd treated like the God of the independents (like if they are in the top whatever they have to get a BCS berth)
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
They're treated that way because every Catholic in the country seems to be a ND fan, and that is a very large fan base.

Well it's good to see that our little ND haters group is up to population 3 so far.
  • OU_Ron · 1 year ago
Joe, I think you will find there are way more dislike population on here than like population........probably like 10 to 1
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
I agree. I would fully expect that number to be much higher.
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
The ND haters group population is at least 4.

Mine comes with the caveat that if they lose their NBC contract and join a BCS conference (or the Ivy League, if they continue as they are) my hate will be downgraded to apathy.

Till then a dream college football season include ND not going bowling.
  • JB · 1 year ago
Agreed in my opinion it seems like Notre Dame doesn't want to be in a conference. Think about it , it has more perks now than it would joining the Big East ( assuming that would be the conference it would join as its basketball teams play there) Notre Dame hasd its own tv contract with NBC, which brings in loads of money as well as publicity. They alo do not have to win a conference in order to make it to a major bowl as most of the bowls have a clause that forces them to include ND under certain circumstances
  • Zac · 1 year ago
I'm Catholic; I don't "hate" ND, but I don't root for em either. Because it's the flag-ship Catholic university, it does get a great deal of support from its fan-base. . . and otherwise. Say what you want about their NC's, the way they win, the way they lose, but ya gotta admit; those kids are playing hard every down. Ya don't have to like em, but ya hasta respects em.

I wonder why all of the apostrophe's (') came out the way they did.

Now they're all better. I don't get it.

And today, the apostrophe's are screwed up again. I'm tell'n ya, these machines iz out ta get me.
  • jake · 1 year ago
The BCS system statistically makes it more difficult for ND to get a BCS birth as an independent. Ever since ND scored that exclusive contract with NBC, recruits know if they go there they will get excellent TV exposure and will be treated like gods. Don't expect ND to win any championships soon due to the BCS. It's all about the money.
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
Notre Dame is guaranteed a spot in the BCS if they are in the top 8. A non-BCS conference champion gets in if they are in the top 12, 16 if a BCS champion is below them and no other non-BCS team is above them.

It is assumed that if Notre Dame is in if they get nine wins and are in the top 14 as an at large. If they go 10-2 they should be in the top 14. I think 2-10 would be closer this year. A non BCS team would be out at 10-2, though BYU was knocking on the door last year.

Their Bowl agreements are with the BCS, Gator and Sun bowls.

For the gator and sun bowls they are lumped in with the Big 12 and Big East teams as one side of the selection process.

Notre Dame lists the cotton bowl as a bowl partner, but the cotton bowl does not include Notre Dame in its selection process.
  • JB · 1 year ago
Thanks for the clarification, that deserves a point
  • Zac · 1 year ago
Ben, that is true, so long as there are NOT more than 3 teams from the same conference in the Top-8. 2 seasons ago #7 WI got screwed out of a BCS game over #10 ND, because ahead of WI were MI & OSU.
  • 1Tomcat · 1 year ago
    "h"
  • JB · 1 year ago
Hey i am catholic and would rather seen So Cal win a national championship rather than ND

and i hate the championship stealers

yea it will grow as the year goes on, especially if they win a game

I remember something on Gameday of another team drinking chocolate milk, anyone else rember this?
  • EddieHeisman · 1 year ago
I remember seeing this chocolate milk thing on Gameday last year, anyone remember seeing this?
  • JB · 1 year ago
Yea i remeber it being on one of them, i am not sure which though or about what team
  • OU_Ron · 1 year ago
On Sept 13th, Washington should have a double order of chocolate milk standing by, i have a feeling they may need it.......
  • JB · 1 year ago
    Most likely ....:)
  • 1Tomcat · 1 year ago
I agree,Tyrone better put something else in that milk, or open a can of Whup- ss.
Instead of drinking milk those boys ought to haul hay & dig post holes all summer, eat beans, rice & cornbread and venision steak- high protein low fat. Stay away from their girlfriends for about a week prior to the game. Then put money in the plate on Sunday and hug their Mamma's neck, then get plum mad dog mean and focus on victory and abstain from negativity, they might have a chance with the right attitude, diet, training and gameplan
Hey Huskies-got milk? do what ? listen you heard it here- well water with a bunch of iron and calcium in it.
  • OU_Ron · 1 year ago
TC, that's an old wise tale about sex before a game, why do you think Kansas did so well last year-----More sex.......

    http://www.uwire.com/Article.aspx?id=1045668
  • 1Tomcat · 1 year ago
Thanks OU Ron Good article, heck so all those coaches I had were wrong about alot of things. Heck young folks can't abstain anyway-its only natural, probably helps their confidence levels as well. You deserve a point on that one, and it sounds like a more interesting topic for off-season than say a uniform change.
    Adios Tomcat

"Milk gives ya' sticky goobers. . ."

Only if someone makes ya laugh when you're drinking and it comes outta U snozzola.
