    Ahh...

Thursday: Took off for a dentist appointment-that got cancelled (yes!).
Friday: Went to Barnes & Noble, picked up Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises & Kerouac's On The Road. Hit the Amite River Diversion Canal & went to a pool party. Applied some SPF 30 Imbibed. Imbibed some more. Reapplied some more SPF 30...Went home, hit another friends, grilled some specs (That's Speckled Freshwater Trout for all you non Southerners) my friend caught in the Gulf the day before.
Saturday: Read the Hemingway, from cover to cover, while doing absolutely NOTHING for the 4th of July. Loved it.
Sunday: Lather, rinse, repeat Saturday, only sans reading.

    Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...

Of course, its no Kenyan Safari with a quick jaunt over to London, like our fearless Fanblogs owner is pulling off as we speak...But, still...it was a NICE 4 day weekend...

Specs are more of a brackish water fish, typicallly found in bays and inshore, not so much freshwater.
  • TigerEducated · 5 months ago
Well, I'll be honest, they caught them at the spot I told them about, just to the right of the South Pass of the Mississippi River...

    So, you're right...

    Wow, I know...
  • The_Observer · 5 months ago
Yeah, I knew you knew, I just didn't want our land-locked brothers to think they could go to their local river and catch'em sum!
  • The_Observer · 5 months ago
By the way, the best spec fishing I have ever had in my life, was out of Venice, LA. I think the 3 of us caught our limit of 25/day each in 2-3 hours each morning. We were there 3 days, so we had plenty of time to enjoy the rest of the day (i.e. drink ourselves silly). I can't wait to go back!
  • 1Tomcat · 5 months ago
Any size to um? whatcha using-live croaker?
La has some real liberal limits-Texas is only 10 per person/day
min length 15" for specs- Reds are 3 per day 20" min length
    BTW I love fresh specs
  • The_Observer · 5 months ago
If my memory serves me correct, then the limit was around the 14-15" mark maybe 12", but it was about 10 years ago. None of them were huge, the biggest being 22-24" or so (still very nice).

I did catch a 44" redfish on 10# test line and a light tackle reel though! That was a fun fight! Luckily we were in open water and I was able to take it easy. It took about 45 minutes, but it was fun. I took a nice picture with him and released it.

I forgot to answer you about our gear, it was all artificial. It was double rigs with plastic cochahoe minnows. I don't remember what colors we used that day, but it was easy fishing (almost too easy). They were schooling in about 20' of water near the rigs that weekend. We caught black-tips, that big red and the trout all on the same gear.

Cool We just got back from Port A, fished a little bit, caught one purty good spansh mackerel in the surf. We watched a guy fight a big Kingfish for bout 20 minutes- came to the surface several times-beautiful fish 30lbs+
Broke off-mono against barnical covered peir post-still fun to watch. Went out ina boat a few hours-tagged along with a guy from my hometown, that I bumped into.
We wasted a couple of dozen live croakers- couldnt go for the Kings- water was too rough- what the heck -thats why they call it fishing and not catching.
We all got soaking wet, i think the kids enjoyed it even if all we got were a few robbed baits- my neice hauled in a big hardhead-her first fish ever
Bad day fishing is better than-well whatever maybe next time

Maybe a Liberal BJs baseball game, with manager Mike Hargrove, and fireworks afterword.
Let me get to this before you start. First the town is named Liberal because the man who started the outpost gave away free water to visitors and their horses. He became known as that "Liberal" fella.
The Second Part: "Ban" Johnson, who founded the American League, encouraged towns to start semi-pro teams as a feeder system to his league. The BJ name was to honor "Ban" Johnson.
ESPN visited in early June and the piece ran on SC last Sunday morning.
Besides if your going to make fun of names in my area how about Beaver, Oklahoma or Hooker, Oklahoma.
Also Hooker has a babe ruth baseball team: the Hooker Horny Toads. I did not make that up.

Flip a coin: pool or lake. It's looking like heads for me.

The only question is where to go watch fireworks in Atlanta:

Stone Mountain park is so crowded and only has three exits, so it takes days to get out of there. I declared never again in 1990.

Lenox Square: haven't been there in years--no where to park anymore or sit.

Centennial Olympic Park: hands down favorite. Wish we could spring for the CNN Center hotel room balcony overlooking the park again. Damn this economy!

Wish I had a boat again. It should would be nice to watch the 'works on the lake. Damn this economy!

On my way to the airport to pick up my sister and her children.

We've rented a condo on the Gulf of Mexico and have a week of sun and fun planned.
Hope all of you enjoy this 4th of July and remember to say a prayer for the men and women in uniform that sacrifice so much so that we can live a life of freedom.

BBQ at the 'Palmetto Pig', then fireworks at the Isle of Palms; Charleston, SC. According to local legend, here's a neat place near Sullivan's Island where you can see the Isle of Palms' fireworks display and the Downtown display over the USS Yorktown at Patriot's Point.

Regardless, I will have BBQ, and all will be good. If you see a vet, thank them...

    Happy 4th, everyone!
  • Clemson_Joe · 5 months ago
Good BBQ there at Palmetto Pig. I haven't been there in a few years, but I need to hit it up next time I'm in Chucktown.
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 5 months ago
Wouldn't it be great to have a BBQ restaurant camparo-thread? We can't because it's such a regional or local thing. My favorite BBQ is a place that's branching out here in the south, Dreamland BBQ. Oddly enough, they originated near Tuscaloosa, but we can't hold that against them. Like many BBQ joints, their best advertising is a blast of that hickory smoke blowing for miles and miles.

Perhaps some of you have tasted their sauce, which is bottled and sold far and wide. It's a bit spicy and a little runny, and best when served heated. I started cooking with their sauce while still in college. We Auburn folk got a kick out of the irony of something good coming from the other side of the state.

Tomcat may disgaree, being from Texas, but BBQ to me is pure pork, no beef. I love the beef, but not with the sauce. And call me a simpleton, but I get more mileage out of a chopped pork sandwich than any other form of it.
  • 1Tomcat · 5 months ago
Its all good WEA down here its beef brisket-if your ever in this area holler at me- the sauce here is a completely different thing as well

Friday night will be great for fireworks. We have a condo downtown, and from the vantage of our roof, you can see for miles around. Fireworks pop up from everywhere. It's quite a sight to behold. To be honest it almost looks like a battle being fought...albeit a very colorful one.

Saturday is a cookout on the lake with friends, cold beer, and good food. The night time will have fireworks fired from 3 spots on the lake simultaneously. It should be fun, and hopefully safe for everyone.

Whatever you guys and gals do, make sure you and yours are safe. We all know this can be as dangerous a holiday as it is fun, and we don't want to miss next season!

    Happy 4th! Be safe!
  • GeauxTigers0107 · 5 months ago
Probably smoking a pork shoulder and baby backs....and all the fixins. Including, but not limited to, a nice cold Mich Ultra or two.

Then we'll break out the guitars and take all requests. At midnight, set off fireworks for the kids then either play more music or cards till an ungodly hour.

Just remember to have yourselves a DD after a long night of drinking fellas. Be responsible and hand over the keys.

And last but not least, remember what it is we're celebrating. Keep our troops in your thoughts and prayers and, as mentioned above, if you see/know a vet, shake his hand and say thanks.

    My $.02 -

Let's all try to break the habit of calling this glorious holiday "The 4th of July", and get into the habit of calling it by its proper name, "Independence Day".

The 4th of July is NOT a holiday; it is a date on the calendar. I've been on this crusade for a number of years now. Many sacrificed in ways we cannot fathom to secure this nation's independence - let's commemorate their patriotism and demonstrate our own by ceasing to use this name and get back to "Independence Day".

After all, we don't say, "The 25th of December".

    peace to all
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 5 months ago
Good point, but everytime I watched Jay Walking on Leno, none of those dumbasses could say who we got our independence from. They don't even know when he prompts them by asking what language they speak.

Has anyone ever watched the fireworks over the Savannah river? We go to the SC side and watch them from Hutcheson island. Awesome

Quote in honor of Independence day:
"People should not fear their government, government should fear it's people."
  • fosterkeats · 5 months ago
I'm in Birmingham with my parents, my 8-month pregnant sister & bro in law, and most importantly, a swimming pool... lol

A friend of mine live basically under Vulcan(the iron statue on Red Mtn overlooking the city) where the fireworks will blast away, we usually get covered by fireworks residue, but hey, it's a tradition of heritage...

Everyone have a great 4th, and get yerselves ready for some serious college football discussions come next week...

I'll leave you with these nuggets from THE MAN:

"America... just a nation of two hundred million used car salesmen with all the money we need to buy guns and no qualms about killing anybody else in the world who tries to make us uncomfortable..."
    -Hunter S Thompson, 2003

"There are times, however, and this is one of them, when even being right feels wrong. What do you say, for instance, about a generation that has been taught that rain is poison and sex is death? If making love might be fatal and if a cool spring breeze on any summer afternoon can turn a crystal blue lake into a puddle of black poison right in front of your eyes, there is not much left except TV and relentless masturbation. It's a strange world. Some people get rich and others eat shit and die."
    -Hunter S Thompson, 1989

"Maybe there is no Heaven. Or maybe this is all pure gibberish—a product of the demented imagination of a lazy drunken hillbilly with a heart full of hate who has found a way to live out where the real winds blow—to sleep late, have fun, get wild, drink whisky, and drive fast on empty streets with nothing in mind except falling in love and not getting arrested . . . Res ipsa loquitur. Let the good times roll."
    -Hunter S Thompson, 1988

I think I know where he got his initial inspirations:
"It is the same for all There is one fate for the righteous and for the wicked; for the good, for the clean and for the unclean; for the man who offers a sacrifice and for the one who does not sacrifice. As the good man is, so is the sinner; as the swearer is, so is the one who is afraid to swear.
This is an evil in all that is done under the sun, that there is one fate for all men Furthermore, the hearts of the sons of men are full of evil and insanity is in their hearts throughout their lives. Afterwards they go to the dead.
For whoever is joined with all the living, there is hope; surely a live dog is better than a dead lion. For the living know they will die; but the dead do not know anything, nor have they any longer a reward, for their memory is forgotten. Indeed their love, their hate and their zeal have already perished, and they will no longer have a share in all that is done under the sun.
Go then, eat your bread in happiness and drink your wine with a cheerful heart; for God has already approved your works.
Let your clothes be white all the time, and let not oil be lacking on your head.
Enjoy life with the woman whom you love all the days of your fleeting life which He has given to you under the sun; for this is your reward in life and in your toil in which you have labored under the sun."
-Solomon, A really, really, really long time ago.

    War Eagle,

I am out here on the West Coast and we are celebrating the country's 233rd Birthday. How did I miss a couple, was I out of town?

Home alone this Holiday, BBQ'd a NY Strip, drank a bottle of Silver Oak Napa Valley Cabernet and smoked a glorious cigar...thank you founding fathers.

    Happy Independence Day everyone!!!

I think I was drunk when I was calculating in my head. To make it easier, I assumed for a second that it was 2010, then forgot to subtract that extra year. Then I counted 1776 as the first 'game', as you would in a college football rivalry, but we had to wait until 1777 for our first birthday.

I spent the weekend soakin' up the sun in Orange Beach. The weather was beautiful.

It was a much needed vacation after stressing about the midterm I took Thursday for my online class. Came home yesterday to find out I scored a 100 on it!

Yep, it was a great weekend.

    Only 61 days, fellas!!

Just wanted to share a link with the rest of you.

This is "The Quad" from the New York Times.

Basically, every day they have a write up about the next team as they rank every team in D1-A from last to first. The write ups are fairly in depth, and quite helpful making it through these hard times known as "the off season".
