Fanblogs Open Conference Championship Thread
A much closer game is the New Mexico Bowl. Fresno State has a name, but has not lived up to its name in recent years. CSU has struggled of late but has returned to the Bowl season but remains far short of being the MWC contenter they once were. For a close game with WAC vs MWC rivalry excitement, this should be a good one.
If the MWC has risen this year to BCS level they should win these two games. That said they will still need to maintain this years level for 3-4 years to stake a claim at a BCS Berth.
Is the Big East as weak as everyone thinks they are this year? Memphis vs South Florida could give an early indication of whether the Big East really is to the level of a BCS conference or merely a pretender with historical tie ins.
The ACC has taken its share of critisism but I feel it is undeserved. Navy could be in for a bit more than they can chew.
Troy vs Southern Miss will play a game. Not sure I have any insight or interest into this one. General rule of thumb... Pick against the Sun Belt.
Which game were the Memphis fans watching? Anyone got the Nelson ratings?
That prediction is going about as well as your Illinois over Ohio State pick.
And if that is the worst pick of mine you can dig up I don't know what to tell you.
Now if I were a PAC 10 fan, I could understand your use of the phrase, "dig up". Since I'm an Ohio State fan...nope. Not gonna fly, my brutha!
:-)
At least you have that going for you, I think Texas will beat you too!
(Maybe I should stop picking against the team with the most BCS value, by my own numbers...)
Now those I'd definitely have to dig up, because we didn't have a conversation here about them. Plus, those don't concern me as much because I probably would've agreed with you about the MSU pick, and the Wisconsin one I'd chalk up to a lack of knowledge about the Big 10(11). The Illinois game should've been obvious to everyone at that point in the season.
"At least you have that going for you, I think Texas will beat you too!"
That's OK, I think we just saw a preview on a smaller scale of the Alabama-Utah game. Smaller scale because I think it'll be even uglier for Utah.
As far as picking teams...I'd suggest you start trusting The Vest a little more often, and wake up and smell the coffee about what the rest of the country knows about the Mountain West Conference, which is that Sagarin has at least that portion of his rankings dead on. But that's just me...and maybe a lot of other fans as well...
;-)
The best non BCS bowl is Tuesday night. It can't come too soon. I got TCU picked because I am biased. This game could go either way.
Notre Dame has taken the lead in the spread, but I still hold to Hawaii in the last bowl before Christmas.
I couldn't agree more, which is precisely why I wish it could change. I don't want to scrap the bowl system, nor do I want to see it scrapped. It would be nice, however if some of the bowls could be spread out a little better, that there weren't so many on the same day, and none played at the same time on different channels.
If more bowls could be played throughout January, and the NC game pushed back to that Saturday before the Super Bowl (Call it "Championship Weekend".), we could all, in a way, have our cake and eat it too. The E/W, N/S, and Sr. Bowls could then be pushed back almost into March Madness. With the brief distraction March Madness would give to most of us, following that is Spring Ball & each of our respective alma maters' final scrimmages.
Recruiting news & Sign-In Day would take up some of the space in between and prior to March Madness. The NFL draft would take up some of the space following this. There: Just like that, we've reduced an 8-month hiatus by approximately 3.5 months. And, I didn't even use the "P" word - something that could also be used to pro-long the season. But, that's for another debate.
In the BCS era, TV concerns have crafted a schedule where two BCS Bowls are played on 1/1 (one of which is always the Rose...save when it hosted the NCG), two are played in the next few days, and now the NCG a week later.
Considering the NCG has now been pushed all the way back to 1/8, it seems that things are spreading out in Bowl Season, albeit in a strange pattern where the date no longer indicates the quality of the matchup.
As far as the CFB season going up to Super Bowl Weekend and March Madness, I wouldn't have a problem with it myself, but I don't think it would be right to have CFB intrude into the NCAABB and NFL 'territory'.
I get furious each CFB season when they just won't shut up about Baseball until halfway through the season and start babbling about Basketball. Autumn is CFB time, and it should split time in the national spotlight with the NFL. We get Saturdays, they get Sundays.
And if I'm going to be such a nutcase about how CFB is All That Is during it's 4.5 months in the sun, I really don't need to support grabbing up time that is the "glory season" in other sports....
....even though other sports don't really matter. Boo-Ya.
Don't you dare fall for that big-media line about there being "too many bowls." These are the last crumbs, the final few morsels of college football we get until going without for eight freaking months, and you should love all of them unconditionally. OK, so even I wouldn't carve out any plans to watch Louisiana Tech-Northern Illinois, but no one's strapping you down Clockwork-Orange-style and forcing you to watch, are they? I say if a bunch of nutso civic-minded businessmen want to blow a wad of cash on a game no will watch but that will feel like a reward to two bunches of kids who have worked their tails off all season and deserve some kind of thanks for it, by all means, be my guest.

WAY IT IS. Well Said. :)
That said I am not in favor of coach firing though I make a lot of jokes about it so don't jump on me! I think Fulmer being fired was a travesty although I sure hope Tennessee found the right team of coaches (let me say as a fan of a school that has a vast amount of coaching talent pulled in from all over that we have what seems to be a too many chief''s problem. With a head coach in waiting, an executive head coach that was formerly a head coach, a head coach and a mickey andrews who also probably has some head coach title all pulling in various directions and a man that doesn't really coach (the head coach) speaking for all of them that I don't think putting together a coaches dream team is a good idea. Clemson probably needed to fire tommy though as it was too much conflict for him to work there and his father to work at FSU. Bobby seemed to be losing on purpose just to keep his son employed and his son became a lame duck at some point roughly 3 years ago and hasn't really seemed to care since. That said Dabo cannot be the right guy, it just seems very unlikely and I have never been a fan of the idea an underling of a bad head coach was actually a good head coach. I wish Clemson success on the field 11 games a year (and a bowl) as I loath BC and think none of the rest of the atlantic should ever be extremely successful (including BC).
I really do think that Swinney is the right guy for the job. Although, right now, it doesn't matter. We'll have to address this again in a year or so. He has certainly picked up some pretty good recruits and recruiters so far, so he's doing a good job with that aspect of the job. Let's see how it translates on the field next season.
Again I wish Clemson nothing but the best 11 games and a bowl out of the year so it's not wishful thinking here. As long as our basketball biotches (and our hockey biotch BC) aren't too football successful I am happy.

Hope you recover before the holidays!
Is it for the King Dick or a reference to Plantagenet's rumored sexuality?

Ugh. I hope he gets better and back on the field soon.
When Tyrone Prothro snapped his leg in half during the Florida game in '05, it almost made me cry to watch..
Horrible thing to happen to these great athletes. I just wish there was a way to prevent it. I guess it's just part of the sport...
I don't watch sports center, maybe they showed it over and over again, but only once during the game.
Unlike the others, this kid was not hit. It looked like he had some king of brace on his lower legs. Could he have been playing on an injury and have been better suited to sit this game out?
At least he has all off season to recover and should be strong next year. He still has 3 years left and broken legs are painful but not usually career ending. This is not the las we have seen of DeAndre Brown.
Bama Babe is right, please dont show us the injury repeatedly. Wish the best for the young man and hope for a full recovery.
My mom broke both of her ankles once just stepping off her porch. She stepped onto the side of a stepping stone, and broke the first one. When she shifted her weight onto the other one she broke that one right away. She said she passed out 3 times dragging herself back into the house and to the phone, then again after making a phone call to my Dad. She was so out of it she didn't call an ambulance. She was laid up for a few months.
So far, I've never broken any bones, and I definitely don't want to start now.
On a side note: Here's wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. And don't forget about your troops who choose to defend your rights and spend yet another holiday away from their families. God Bless them, one and all.

ESPN is a cancer.
Great end to a great defensive game.
Grammar is grammar, folks.
Laying down on the field so the players running down to cover don't see you, the standing up wide open of the lateral...
Imagine doing that in their home blues on the blue field. Stealth, the wave of the future.
I believe we are arguing diction, not grammar.
I believe either term applies. Here's the definition of diction, and here's the definition of grammar.
I think you understand my point, nonetheless.
Everybody remember Sniglets? It's a word that doesn't appear in the dictionary, but should. In other words, you create a word for something that doesn't have one. Maybe we at Fanblogs could come up with our own sniglets for football. Give me a minute to think...
here's a tip Boise, watch out for the statue of liberty ;-)

Apparently Andre Smith was suspended and will not play in the Sugar Bowl, due to improper dealings with an agent.
This sucks.
Minus one solid tackle will make running against Utah a little harder than expected. It is Alabama and they will have the next guy ready to go, you know, the one waiting all season to play who finally has a chance to show what he is worth...
The excitement is building...
Tickets, Hotel reservation. parking lot scouted, I am ready for a good game. If the game goes your way I have the French Quarter to administer a health dose of Proverbs 31:6-7.
