Fanblogs.com: Florida and Utah to settle BCS debate on the field?

  • Regan · 9 months ago
If they do, then I believe it should indeed be to "settle the BCS debate" :-)

"...it should indeed be to *settle the BCS debate*"

OK, what if either TCU or Utah plays one hell-of-a game against FL, but they still lose? Do you think that will prove anything to the BCS pundits?
  • BamaBorn · 9 months ago
You can't play last season's teams so what's the point? Move on. That's life. If we played Utah this year and destroyed them, it would not make up for the butt whippin' that we got last year. That one's "in the books".

The only reason that I see to do this is if some network comes through with really big bucks for each school.

    Point. :)

Agreed. And, well said, by the way, especially the 1st paragraph.

I'm all for FL playing UT or UT playing FL or BCS schools playing non-BCS schools and vice versa. But, lets play fair. If at big-time, two-time (within the last 3 years) NC wants a home date, in The Swamp, with an arguable title contender like UT, the least they can do is offer to come visit the Utes on their home field. We've all heard (and in all fairness have witnessed) how consistently tough the SEC is year-in, year-out. The question remains, when was the last time FL played a non-conference foe on their home field, let alone outside the state of FL? Life i tough conference is a little easier when you play 7 or 8 home games year after year. Betcha WVU (among others) would be more than happy to host the Gators just as they hosted Auburn. It's like Bamaborn has said, if the money's right, watcha got to lose?

The problem is - of course - an economic one. The payday for playing an away game is pretty small (relative to playing a home game) and so it's not very attractive for teams with larger stadiums (stadia?) that can make more money playing at home.
  • gogators503 · 9 months ago
Kentucky has hit the nail on the head from that economic standpoint. If the rumored game with Miami of Ohio, at Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati, comes true they will win both ways:

    1) Play what is essentially a home game, with your fans buying the great majority of tickets and getting to keep a certain percentage of revenues.

    2) Get a mid-major team to play at your home stadium (Miami of Ohio will come to Lexington the following year, I believe) without having to pay the $600,000 or $700,000 that are required these days.

UK gets two games which are basically home games, with none of the loss of revenue that comes along with these "DOA" games.

"The question remains, when was the last time FL played a non-conference foe on their home field, let alone outside the state of FL?"

Last year, we went to Tallahassee and played Florida State (and we play them on their home field every other year). As for the last time we played a non-conference foe outside the state FL, that would be 1991 when we went to the Carrier Dome and lost to Syracuse, 38-21.

Thanks, GG503. I know those questions had been asked before (don't know who asked them). I hadn't seen the answers. I can't believe I'd forgotten about FL/FL St rivalry. (It's the age thing; I'm certain of it.). The loss to Syracuse must have been against a Donovan McNabb run team; at least that seems about the right time frame. I think WVU only beat him once; it was Marc Bulger's best year, and that was in Morgantown. Thanks again!!!
  • gogators503 · 9 months ago
Actually, we beat up a Donovan McNabb lead 'Cuse team in the 99 Orange Bowl. I wasn't very old in 91, so I don't remember that game at all.

"(In fact, I suspect 99% of the nation would rather see this game than the Labor Day game with FSU-Miami.)"

Count me in as part of the 1% who wants to see FSU-Miami instead.
  • Kevin @ Fanblogs · 9 months ago
That puts my count at four of us. :)

    Five.

I would love to see a Utah vs. Florida game. I think Florida vs TCU is much more likely...

I would enjoy this game much more than the FSU-Miami game. TCU's defense vs. Florida's offense would be exciting, but I am not sure TCU has an offense that can do anything. I'd pick Florida 17 TCU 3.

    Now back to NCAA basketball...

I dunno, Ben. I think it all depends upon who TCU has coming back. They really played one hell-of-a game at Utah; a game they should have arguably won, given the yardage they piled up (416, more than double what Utah allowed against Bama). Not to mention, they held your Utes to under 300 yards. Ultimately, untimely penalties, a poor pass completion percentage, & 2 INT's killed em. They just didn't finish.

Earlier, at OK, TCU held the Sooners to 25 yards rushing. That don't do a whole lotta good, however, if they're not consistently getting to Sam Bradford, who torched TCU for over 430 yards on all of 19 completions. Again, TCU had issues with untimely penalties (12), a poor pass completion percentage (39), and twice as many T.O.'s (4) as against Utah.

If enough of this team's key players return, and if enough able back-ups step up, they could give FL a go. I'm not saying a win, mind you, but a game that could prove to be entertaining; that is, in other ways than Tim Tebow getting all the glory. I'm thinking more like 31-16. Yes, the margin of victory is about the same, but as I said, it's a darn site more entertaining. Just imagine TCU staying in it, but eventually wearing down, with FL pulling away toward the end. Just a thought.

It's got to be TCU, honestly, at least if we're talking opening weekend. TCU has an opening there, and Florida could easily drop Charleston Southern. If it is Utah, it will have to be on the 12th, which isn't too bad either. Troy and Utah could trade opponents and ESPN could sweeten the pot by tossing the Spartans a TV game in exchange for their letting Utah out.
  • Zac · 9 months ago
I wouldn't at all object to seeing Utah play Troy. Troy did some good things last year, which included handing LSU their a$$ for 3 qtr's. (Too bad a regulation game has 4.) What a difference a few weeks make between Appy St & Troy.

If I were Florida, I think I'd offer the Utes expenses, but nothing more... (for a few different reasons)
  • bnel14 · 9 months ago
Either would be a great game. Great use of the word dosie-do.

Nice to see your favorite moderator in mid-season form, huh? ;-)
