Fanblogs.com: Football media again prove they don't watch football

    Surprising. Speaking of naming coaches

  • hrposon · 11 months ago
College football polls, awards and the BCS are done very similar to the way they judge Olympic Figure Skating. And somehow, the Russian and East German judges still get to vote.
  • Regan · 11 months ago
CFB Awards are becoming more stupid each year; the higher the level of prestige, the bigger the sham.

And yes, it all begins with the Hypesman...

The position awards and Maxwell are the last ones left with much credibility IMHO...
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 11 months ago
I think Paul Johnson of GA Tech should be a candidate. He's certainly on Auburn's list of candidates. Whoops! Did I just say that?
  • Ramblin' Gator · 11 months ago
    Shut yo' mouth! :-)

I can go along with Saban being on the list of finalists, but leaving Houston Nutt and Paul Johnson off the list speaks volumes about the voters/nominators lack of depth
  • Zac · 11 months ago
HEY! Howz-about David Bailiff and his RICE Owls? They only went from 3-9 last year to 9-3 this year. Not a bad turn-around, I'd say. Keven even wrote an article about them...oh, a little while back there. Anyone care to explain why he wasn't mentioned?

Kevin, you're right on both counts. It sure is a list of great coaches, and it sure smacks of a lack of any imagination. What a waste.
  • TRIPPA06 · 11 months ago
Paul Johnson should most definitely be on the list.
  • MattRyan · 11 months ago
Paul Johnson should DEFINATLY be on there... I'm an Auburn fan and i respectfully hate georgia tech, but not too bad. I mean come on, who in there right minds would have predicted at the beginning of the season that Paul Johnson and his...his... uhhh, "offense" would have went 9-3?? we went 5-7 while experimenting with the "cool" new offense.... He's done a great job, and I praise his team for that win over Georgia. If they pull off the win against LSU then I will have no doubt in my mind that he's done the best job this year.

It's finally here! Steve Spurrier has been named to the Auburn suspicion list of new coaches. Will he come? Of course not but then again I did get a letter in the mail the other day from Jay Jacobs wanting to know my credentials in coaching and if I could run an offense/defense...... Hey I would take the job--
  • theHoundDawg · 11 months ago
How about a vote for Gary Patterson, whose TCU Horned Frogs lost only to No. 1 Oklahoma and undefeated Utah? Maybe also Mike Beltotti, who survived a slew of injuries, including losing QBs 1 and 2 in the first couple of games, and still going 9-3 and averaging 42 points/game, and scoring from 54 to 66 points in 5 games. Their teams missed the top 10, but they provided great coaching jobs.
  • Ben Prather · 11 months ago
If you are scratching off teams expected to do good, who did he beat that he was not supposed to? BYU? Even that game was a toss up.

Leech is the only one that has not been in the top 10 in the last 5 years.

What about Pat Fitzgerald getting Northwestern into the top 25?
  • Bevo_Boy · 11 months ago
People weren't really expecting Texas to have a great season, so I think Mack is very deserving (not just because I'm a Texas fan, either). Most analysts, and even most people on here, were saying Texas would get somewhere from 7-10 wins, and that they could not make it to a BCS game, let alone have such an argument for the MNC. I'm not saying that he is the MOST deserving, but I think he deserves it more than most of the finalists. People were saying 3rd in the Big XII South and they tied for first.

Living in Indiana, I would kinda like to see Brady Hoke win it, but I guess that won't happen...
  • gosu27 · 11 months ago
    Pat Fitzgereld possibly.....
I would also like to think that Mike Gundy earned some respect this season
  • FSU_Ben · 11 months ago
How about Charlie Weiss! HE won three more games then last year!
  • USC1801 · 11 months ago
    LOL!

You're right! How could he have been left off! After all, he coaches . . . NDame!!! :0 I mean, they were almost Gator bound until USCal booted them off the field.
  • Tom_Blogical · 11 months ago
What do you know, Donahue? You're just a blogger, for crying out loud.

    /obvious sarcasm
  • Zac · 11 months ago
What's driving me over the friggen falls is some of us will be complaining about Rich Rodriguez being left off the list next year, provided he follows his usual pattern, that is.
  • MattRyan · 11 months ago
The local news just reported the Steve Spurrier story.... "insiders say Auburn will offer him a deal"
  • U.of S.C.1978 · 11 months ago
I've said it before. Mr. Spurrier already has the job he wants.
  • "BC" · 11 months ago
    Does it really matter?
i mean, the best coach is going to win - Nick Saban
  • FSU_Ben · 11 months ago
No offense but I don't think Saban deserves it. Ball state got a lot more bang for thier coaching buck. I'm not sure I would want to give it to any SEC coach given the talent on both thier staff's and the field. Ball State would be my choice. How much does he make? most the MAC is in the bottom 25 or so for coaches salaries, worst facilities, poor recruiting opprotunity etc. Nick Saban did a great job this year and is a good coach but for what bama is paying him HE DARN WELL BETTER BE!
  • TigerEducated · 11 months ago
Trust me, FSU_Ben, if there's one guy you don't have to preface comments by saying, "no offense" here to, its little BC...

I'm sure you haven't realized it yet, but...just give it some time...
  • "BC" · 11 months ago
haha. you seem like a victim of media influence.

due to the media, when you hear "nick saban," you think high salary, liar, sleazy.
he's not even the highest paid coach in the SEC. and his salary isn't much higher than any other top program's head coach.
also - would anyone argue that Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, and Pete Carroll aren't the best coaches in college football?
so why shouldn't he be the highest paid?

you can't figure salary into deciding who should win coach of the year.
also, what if Lane Kiffin went 6-6 with TN in 2009, then went 12-1 in 2010 while leading his team to a 12-0 regular season?
    wouldn't he deserve it?
even though Tennessee has the best facilities money can buy, and he's paid a lot?

the only reason Nick Saban isn't a unanimous pick is because he gets paid a lot, and everyone pretty much expected to see Saban put Alabama back on the map.

also, Nick Saban isn't even the highest paid coach in the SEC.
that title goes to Les Miles.....
haha. that will be one helluva price to pay when they get rid of him in a few years.
  • TigerEducated · 11 months ago
I seem to remember asking you if you'd like some Kenny Bell quotes the other day...

I never heard back from you, buddy...

Hey, on top of that...Want to hear from Janzen Jackson?

I can get you some reallllllllllll unequivocal information, if you like...

    Just lemme know, lil' BC...

BTW-It's hard to win Coach Of The Year, when you can't win your conference championship...

Not saying its unheard of, and not saying Nick didn't do a good coaching job, but, let's face it, the Tide benefitted from a down year in the SEC. Their "signature" wins came over Clemson (Who was a charlatan), Georgia (Who was another pretender), and...and...Hmmm...

BTW-I know you're all pumped up about your 12-1 season, and all...Just curious...Would you like some Mal Moore quotes on AJ McCarron, McElry, and Star Jackson? I know a guy in the Mobile area Red Elelphant club who got one helluva sobering meeting with Mal the other day about the future of the QB position there...

Anyway...You know me, just wanting to rain on your parade...

Just let me know if you need any of those quotes...I can shoot an e-mail over to you, or just post them here...
  • "BC" · 11 months ago
    TE, everyone has their "sources"
who's to say yours are better than anything i read on an alabama message board?
you dont think there are guys on there that are in the red elephant club?

seriously, why don't we just let it play out on the field?
i know coming off a 7-5 season and going to the papajohns.com bowl can make you wanna talk about next year, and about how alabama is goin down the tubes and how LSU is gonna somehow have an amazing QB next season, etc.
but i'm still enjoying 2008. if you didn't know, my team is playing in the Sugar Bowl. my team won the west. my team is working on the best recruiting class in the SEC....for a second year in a row.

i really don't care what you have to say, because either way, alabama is getting better every second. it's growing into a monster...
  • TigerEducated · 11 months ago
You really don't care that you're lying? Because LSU has the best recruiting class in the SEC...

...and we have the best recruiting class in America...

...and that's without 5* Craig Loston, whose the worst kept commitment secret in America...

Once again...You were the one that brought up Kenny Bell awhile back...and you also brought up McElroy...I had corrected your thoughts on both of them, and I was just offering-again-some insights from them...Direct quotes I've gotten from the kids, and direct quotes your own AD gave to fellow Alabama fans in Mobile...

I see you'd rather not bring up Kenny Bell, Janzen Jackson, McElroy, Star, or AJ anymore...

The entire point was to stop having you talk about them, anywya...

BC, LSU's won the Sugar Bowl 3 times in the last 8 years, and won a National Championship there in 2004, and we won the BCS Championship AGAIN last year there...

I guess you're just still sore that LSU can actually lose twice as many football games as Alabama did this year, and still win a national title.

    Enjoy the Sugar Bowl against...Utah...
  • GeauxTigers0107 · 11 months ago
TE, I just read that Rivals has moved Janzen Jackson up to a 5*, fwiw. And you're correct, LSU and USC are currently leading in recruiting according to Rivals and ESPN. And that's without Rueben Randle's committment as well...again....from what I've read.

I guess it's time for me to do a little research on Janzen and Loston. Haven't read much on them yet.

Heard anything on Barkevios Mingo? How solid a committment is he?

Sorry for the hi-jack fellas. To the topic at hand: Brian Kelly should be at the top of that list, imo. There are several other deserving coaches also...none of which made the elite's list.

I think the award should be handed out after the bowl season is complete to get a complete synopsis of work. Then again, maybe it is. Anybody know when they hand it out?

Barkevios Mingo? What a great name for a football player. Is he a linebacker? He should be.
  • GeauxTigers0107 · 11 months ago
LOL...I agree. If that isn't a great football name, then I don't know what is. He's a 6'-5" LB who runs a 4.55 40yd dash out of West Monroe High School in Louisiana.

His team is playing in the 5A state championship game tonight in the Super Dome. He hasn't officially committed yet though. I've only seen him listed as probable. And at 6'-5", I don't know if they'd keep him at LB. DE may be a more suitable position with that speed coming off the edge.

  • Tommy_Trojan · 11 months ago
    GT0107:

Well, LSU likes the bigger DE's just like Southern Cal does. Mr. Barkevios Mingo would have to be able to support about 250 lbs minimum, without losing any speed, in order to fit the bill at defensive end. And, the bigger the better at defensive end. But, a big guy with speed is a good thing to have. If he can't support the extra weight - then he'll have to stay at linebacker. Some of the real fast small linebackers (like 6'3 210) can run 4.45 forties, and they'll stick them on the edge, but they'll be overpowered by pulling guards on sweeps. I know that LSU doesn't care to be overpowered at any point of contact, therefore they will always prefer bigger people at DE, which is why Mingo's frame would have to support being bulked up while not losing much speed. Great strength is also a must when playing against OT's in the SEC. So, that's a big jump.
At Southern Cal we've had many "hybrid type" LB's and DE's. Pete Carroll likes to always have guys who can come off the edge and play coverage at the linebacker position. This last year we've had both Brian Cushing and Clay Matthews fill the bill. Both of those guys went about 6'5 and 245-250 lbs. Other great ones here who have met those qualifications have been Chip Banks and Willie McGinist. It's not many guys who have the speed to play linebacker, yet also have the strength and mental toughness, to get hammered on by OT's all dayum day long. I hope your guy Barkevios Mingo punches that ticket for LSU. I absolutely love players who can play both DE and LB. This can automatically make a defense be able to shift from 3-4 to 4-3, and maybe even 5-2, without any personnel leaving the field. It can definately cause the opposing QB's some confusion as to what the defense really is.

Somebody still sore from that butt whipping.
  • TigerEducated · 11 months ago
27-21...in overtime...after throwing you the winning points while we were on offense...a 12-1 team versus a 7-5 team...

Yeah, I'd call that a butt whipping...

Whole lot of perspective in this post...But, to agree with BC, I understand you have to suspend things like logic, accountability, reason, and intelligence...

    Cheers!

  • TigerEducated · 11 months ago
I'm not insulting anyone...I'm addressing the "We Just Beat...The Hell Out Of You" delusional attitude on display from yet another Woodwork Whittled 334 area code 'Bama fan...

"Butt whipping" means 27-21 in overtime...

we DID beat the hell out of them in overtime. it was hard to watch haha. pretty gruesome.
  • 1Tomcat · 11 months ago
Hey BC He's got a point 27-21 in OT
Yall won the game, but not really a butt whupin-I seen yalls Miss game too.
Not taking anything away from the Tide, but those were real close vicories- yall got the W and thats all that really counts. Now if your Oklahoma winning the game aint enough, you got to try and run up alot to impress voters after that 45-35 loss.
I was sure hoping that we would get to see a Texas vs Bama game. Yall win the SEC next year and you might face the Longhorns in the NC game.
    Your purty funny BC

Nah I don't buy the Sleezy and Liar stuff, and they can pay whatever they want although I really wish something could be done to cap it as I feel it is getting out of control and it hurts college ball to drive the price of coachs high. I have no problems with Saban on any personal level I just like what coaches that have little to work with can do so well.
  • Tyler_Tech · 11 months ago
Certain events over the past week have enraged me, and then I see this. This is the kind of stuff that will kill the sport eventually if we do not implement a new system. College football has evolved into a fraternity. If you are not in the fraternity, you don't get invited to the party. Guys like Gill, Kelly, and Holtz being left off this list confirms my beliefs. Harrell was left out of the Heisman ceremony and for what??? His numbers are sick, and that system crap argument does not hold water. If that is your argument you have been listsening to the media for far too long and will not comprehend much anyway. He has the same record as all those other guys. Can you imagine how Graham and his family must feel!?!?! He has come so far as a quarterback and person since he was a sophomore and is very deserving to be there. This is a great travesty IMO. I am just glad they really had to show their a@@ at the college football awards ceremony. Which is a bunch of crap anyway. I think we need to take our pirate theme one more step. I do not want to play by the media's rules anymore. It makes me sick how much money these same neworks and the overall BCS system made out of our "little cinderella story" and then toss us to the wind. Certain sports writers who have covered our team have said that it would bite us in the butt to not have Harrell and Crabtree at Big 12 Media days, and I guess he was right. He wrote an article gloating as to how this Heisman snub was directly related to that. SO I guess this is what the award is all about, nothing more than a popularity contest between the top teams in the country. They look for any excuse to keep the non traditional power houses out of the limelight come award time. Trust me I know how the game works. Follow the dollar. Ohio state being picked over Boise is just another example. 90 % of college football schools are not OU, Texas, Ohio State, or USC. The current system is just who the sports writers like the most and who has the biggest soap box. It calls for a change. I don't wanna play their media game anymore.
  • The_Observer · 11 months ago
    Who's Graham Harrell?
  • Porcine · 11 months ago
    Them's fightin' words.
  • FSU_Ben · 11 months ago
I hope you are kidding. He is a skilled -quarterback-. Note Colt Brennan was passed over last year and holds many records, records Harrell has a very good chance to break in the bowl game this year. Honestly though this is the first year I didn't feel like Texas Tech was a joke and upstarts. I acutally thought they earned respect. Maybe they just need a few really great years like this.

Want some semblance of equality first thing you have to do is break the BCS. A playoff will bring equality especially one that lets all the conference champs in. Otherwise it will always be the big teams (and thier in conference assosiates) that hold the power. TCU/BYU are the only teams outside BCS conferences (that still play FBS football and aren't Army) that have national championships.
  • Ute_fan · 11 months ago
SMU has two argueably three (if you include 1935 which of course they always do!)national championships.
  • FSU_Ben · 11 months ago
I am of the school of thought that there is only one national champion per year. I use the AP in all years SMU claims to have a national championship. There are 0 SMU ap national championships. As to 1935 the general consensus seems to be Minnesota. Note I do not use AP beyond the Bowl Coalition days or into the BCS era. Having more than one national champion in a year is lame.

I'm not sure I'm following your train of thought. Bear with me, but are you saying that based on your insistance that I am a Bama fan (I told you that I have a degree from U of A), that you assumed that I AM an idiot and really wouldn't know Graham Harrell? I wouldn't be capable of making a remark such as "Who's Graham Harrell?" to a guy that just wrote a giant paragraph about his anger towards the media not paying attention to his team and QB? Is that why you disqualified me from discussing football outside of Alabama? Is that what you are talking about?

If that isn't what you are talking about then I MUST be an Alabama fan because I'm confused.
