Fanblogs.com: Fulmer Out at Tennessee

  • TigerEducated · 1 year ago
    Two words: David Cutcliffe
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
Fulmer and Cutcliffe are real close, so it's highly unlikely that Cut would take the job, if offered, unless he got the blessing of Fulmer. If you still believe in that kind of loyalty...
  • Ramblin' Gator · 1 year ago
Maybe so, but I bet the fans are pulling for Cutcliffe now. I know I would be if I were a Vols fan.
  • gatorhippy · 1 year ago
    Meh...

    Cut from the same cloth...

Cut would "go Senate" on Phil just like Phil did it to Majors...

    Et tu, Cute?
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
My memory is fading a bit, since the coup took place. I knew that Majors was uncerimoniously dumped, but I've forgotten if/how big a part that Fulmer took in it.

    Et tu, Cut'e... LMAO!!

BEWARE THE BOWL IDLENESS OF DECEMBER!!!!!!
  • gatorhippy · 1 year ago
I'll link up Jai's take on this @ LWS in the thread when he posts it today...

He promised my favorite photoshop to accompany it...

I think you'll dig it and it certainly expresses Johnny's feelings on the way Fulmer "did" him...

MIKE LEACH MIKE LEACH MIKE LEACH MIKE LEACH or BRIAN KELLY BRIAN KELLY BRIAN KELLY or BUTCH BUTCH BUTCH WE GET ANY OF THE THOSE 3 GUYS I WILL BE HAPPY MIKE HAMILTON. I WILL BUY TICKETS, SIT IN THE SEAT, AND "DRINK THE KOOL- AID". GO VOLS
  • Zac · 1 year ago
How sad that none of them are from the Big East. What a shame? What a shame, indeed...
  • SteveninTenn · 1 year ago
no more Cutcliffe we need new blood and a new direction.no more in-house or "in-family" hiring. Alot of vol fans want some one without Tenn ties. We wont have any guilt if we have fire the next guy if it doesnt work out. Weve only hired 3 coaches since 1970. all 3 were in-house hires -- former or current coaches or players. going outside the "family" on this one. NO CUTCLIFFE. NO CUTCLIFFE. STAY AT DUKE.
  • Volsdog · 1 year ago
    My top 5 picks:
    1. Mike Leach
    2. Mike Leach
    3. Mike Leach
    4. Mike Leach
    5. David Cuticliffe
  • Regan · 1 year ago
NO Mike Leach. Knoxville is a civilized area and people like him do not belong there.
  • NMLSooner · 1 year ago
I've been to Knoxville. I've been to Neyland Stadium. "Civilized" isn't a term I would use to describe it.
  • Regan · 1 year ago
It was in reference to something I said about the Clemson job:

    http://www.fanblogs.com/clemson/007834.php

"Mike Leach is a bad person. Keep him away from Clemson and other civilized areas."

I was going with a theme - since having coaches fired seems to be a theme with my teams this year...
  • gatorhippy · 1 year ago
    Right...

Lucky for you Shannon seems safe at UCG...

At least for the immediate future...

I'd hate to see ya lose three in one year...
  • Regan · 1 year ago
Thanks, GH, no doubt....maybe the Cougars can make a team and fire the coach just to make this year straight flush...
  • PrinceMarko · 1 year ago
He was due to be fired. 3-6 wont get a coach far in Tenn. with the history of winning that they have.
  • Jake · 1 year ago
Bust... this means one thing on and one thing only... no more "Phil Fulmer ate my other sign" signs at ESPN Gamedays, which is tragic. Now all that's left is "Mangino ate my other Phil Fulmer".

Good luck to UT - you will need it.

    Jake

It just isn't fun this year...
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
So who do you want to see in Knoxville now? The new guys is certainly going to inherit some solid talent and a powerful program. Who's the guy to right the ship?
  • Regan · 1 year ago
I honestly don't know. As you've probably gathered, I don't like change - so I'm probably apt to pul for Cutcliffe...
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
When is Miami firing their coach?
  • Regan · 1 year ago
    At this rate? Geez....
  • Zac · 1 year ago
    Me thinks...not this year.
  • "BC" · 1 year ago
    i agree 100%
    and my team's undefeated....

i guess it's because college football's best, is down (the SEC)
and we have to hear ESPN hype up the Big-12 and their no-defense-bullshit-brand of football.
and because all of Alabama's rivals are down, it makes beating them somewhat less special. the iron bowl and third saturday in october are/were both forgone conclusions.

    everyone's down this year....
    the ACC is down
    the Big Easy is down
    the Pac-10 is down
    the SEC is down
the Big Ten is still down
and the Big 12 is up? really? we'll see come bowl season, where the B12 always loses.
  • 1Tomcat · 1 year ago
    B-12 always loses bowls? 2007
    Tech Tech won
    OK State won
    Texas won
    Missuori won
    Kansas won
BC you might ought to check on the facts before you print B/S
    Colo lost
    OU lost
    A&M lost
    Reminder
    Arkansas lost
    Florida lost
LSU beat OSU not a B-12 team
  • USC1801 · 1 year ago
Ahhh, but on the flip side, it HAS been fun beating Tenn! However, I'd have rather beaten them at their strength, as Spurrier said after the game:

“Tennessee’s not what they have been in the past. We didn’t try to make it that big a deal. It was a good win and they’re a decent team. They’re not a great team this year. We all know that. I think sometimes we put too many teams up on a pedestal and think they’re big, strong, tough teams and we’re not. And that’s just not true.”
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
You can't spell Citrus without UT.

    I love that line.
  • Regan · 1 year ago
Can't spell it without USC either....bet the OBC never thought that one out. :)
  • NMLSooner · 1 year ago
    He said it at Florida.
  • Regan · 1 year ago
NML, you are just not going to let me have any fun today, are you?
  • NMLSooner · 1 year ago
    Uh....no:)
  • Regan · 1 year ago
    What about today?
  • NMLSooner · 1 year ago
Life as you have known it gone. Never again will you feel joy. NEVER!!!!!!

So you're the one that has destroyed my luck this year.....
  • GeauxTigers0107 · 1 year ago
And to think just last year he had them in the SEC Championship game. And he's won, what, 75% of his games there? People have a short memory if you ask me....but you didn't....so I'll shut up.

He's lost 20 football games over the last 4 years...

He hasn't won a conference Championship since the 90's...He's lost there three times since then...

    He peaked long ago, GT0107...
  • GeauxTigers0107 · 1 year ago
Thx for the history lesson, even though it's not needed. My point was that they won the East last year, got beat by the eventual National Champs in the SEC Championship game then won their bowl game over Wisconsin.

So to me, they wrap up a good 2007, looking for a good 2008, and manage to only be 3-6 at this point in the season. They haven't started a season like that in a while. It's uncharacteristic of Tenn football.

I hope I didn't come off as professorial, but you're focusing on more recent history, and I'll enlighten you there, as well...

Tennessee got 59 points hung on them by Florida last year, and they also got 41 points hung on them as a heavy favorite to a 7-6 Alabama team last year...Say what you like, but he was 10-4 last year...and while double digit wins is nothing to sneeze at, 59 and 41 points against your two biggest rivals, followed up with an anemic offensive output against an LSU defense limping in after a sub-par 2nd half of the season...

They also lost a talented three year starter in Erik Ainge and Crompton's striking lack of development was a big problem for them this year...

I dunno...They were sending out e-mails trying to sell discounted Alabama tickets in Neyland this year...The fans were speaking with their fannies, IE-they weren't in the stands...

Against Alabama, if Tennessee's got to try to discount tickets for that game-one of their traditionally biggest rivals-then something is horribly awry there...

The 2007 season was fool's gold...
  • GeauxTigers0107 · 1 year ago
I hear ya bro...after confirming they lost that many games in 4 years ( it just didn't seem like that many losses to me, I guess) and putting myself in the shoes of a Vol fan, I probably would want a change too.

Nah TE, 2007 was Fulmer's last shot to keep me from having a shot to see a NC in person. How those bastards did not lose at least one of those last 4 SEC games before the SEC CG, I will never know. Beat SC by 3, Vandy by 1, and KY by 2. That is just freaky. They should have fired him last year.
With that loss on Saturday, the DAWGS are once again a bridesmaid. Looks like we have a shot at 11-2 with a bowl win and another season of what ifs? Man, I love those DAWGS! The Phil Mickelson of College Football.

    GO DAWGS!!
  • gatorhippy · 1 year ago
I thought he had peaked at the Dunkin Donuts on Henley ST. a few blocks from Neyland...

  • shiguy · 1 year ago
Ahh it's getting that time of the year again time for the SEC coaching shuffle! Hey why should anyone have to deal with a loosing season..........when there is copious amounts of money to throw at someone. Just ask Alabama.

I have a good idea how about we eliminate losses all together. What is the point? It just makes teams feel bad and gets coaches fired. Then the whole SEC can be happy in that EVERYONE'S a winner!!

I personally find this a bit sad in that even a coach who is obviously successful overall is simply being looked at from a loosing perspective.
  • Bama_DevilDog · 1 year ago
This makes me sad. My whole life I have been making Fat Phil jokes. Now, my time is limited. It is an emotional loss from my stand point. Ole fat a** Phil, I will truly miss your fat face.
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
'Tis a pity. Who's going to tattle on Bama now that Phil won't be around?
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
We can still cheer for that Texas Tech guy that rings the bell on the sidelines.
  • mbenz55amg · 1 year ago
Fulmer WAS good for TN, but he has lost the edge. Time for him to move on.

The ole ball coach is from Johnson City TN. Would he make a run at being the new face of the Vols?
  • NMLSooner · 1 year ago
    Too far north.
  • "BC" · 1 year ago
    absolutely.
    it's just that.
Phil Fulmer HAS LOST HIS EDGE.

he's old. he's good. just let the man retire.
    Tennessee needs Will Muschamp.
the guy will be a great coach, and if we had any coach other than Saban, i would want him.
and i would much rather TN have Muschamp than Auburn.
i hope Auburn is miserable for a long, long time.... payback's a b**** isn't it?
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
Your 'payback' is only administered one game at a time, so you should concentrate on that, even if it is a "foregone conclusion", didn't you say?
  • 1Tomcat · 1 year ago
BC Man you make me laugh dude, Yall dont want Muschamp at Tenn
Heck he is a DC were they play no defense according to you
  • otowngator · 1 year ago
Spurrier would never go to TN; nor would they allow him to coach...
  • Matson · 1 year ago
Fulmer has done a lot for the Vol program over the years. Unfortunately the "What have you done for me lately" philosophy cost him. I read that the Vols haven't been to a BCS bowl since1998.
    Too long of time period.
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
    Brian Kelly?
  • Rebel Centaur · 1 year ago
Spurrier won't leave USC, he doesn't want to loose his Augusta National membership. The Vols need to look at Gary Patterson at TCU.
  • Tyler_Tech · 1 year ago
dang that is a good pick, did not even think about that one.
  • TRIPPA06 · 1 year ago
Spurrier did not get a Augusta National membership, that is total BS and I am tired of hearing people say it.
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
Really? So how does he play there?

    http://deadspin.com/sports/peeing-at-augusta/ah...
  • TRIPPA06 · 1 year ago
I know multiple people who have played there and are not members...
  • TRIPPA06 · 1 year ago

  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
It's cool man. Welcome to fanblogs. It's always nice to have more Tigers.
  • USC1801 · 1 year ago

TRIPP is right, I glanced down at your entries and thought you were talking to yourself.

  • playera · 1 year ago
If Spurrier came to UT I would hang myself off Neyland Stadium in Cry Baby Diapers.
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
I can't believe we've gone 36 posts so far and nobody has thrown out Lane Kiffin's name yet...

Actually, this will be real interesting to see who they get...

There's a few Bowdens looking for work...
  • gatorhippy · 1 year ago
    OH GOOD GOD YES!

PLEASE HIRE JEFF BOWDEN AT UT!!!
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
I was thinking more on the lines of Buster Brown Bowden...
  • Zac · 1 year ago
Well, at least he wouldn't have to change his pants.
  • Tyler_Tech · 1 year ago
Mike leach isn't stupid enough to try and rebuild a program with the spread in the SEC. It would take 5 years or more until he could recruit the guys he needed to compete in that division. That and vol alum would have none of him....lol.
  • gatorhippy · 1 year ago
So admittedly then Mike Leach is NOT a very good coach...

Because if he was he would fit the scheme to the personnel on hand...

Not wait around for the other to happen...
  • Tyler_Tech · 1 year ago
The problem is that in his scheme, it is all about timing and repitition so he needs incoming freshman and sophomores, because admittedly it takes about 2-3 years to groom these players. If that makes him a bad coach, I guess that is your opinion.
  • gatorhippy · 1 year ago
Again, a good coach changes his scheme to match the personnel on hand until his recruits develop...

    See UF in 2006...

    And honestly....

I would assume then that UF shouldn't be winning anything under you philosophy since they are freshmen and sophmore heavy on both sides of the ball...
  • Eric · 1 year ago
get him out he is absolutely worthless! So is the Offensive coordinator
  • Kevin @ Fanblogs · 1 year ago
Here's a response from Coach Cut....

"Obviously this is a very personal situation that happened today," Cutcliffe said in the statement. "Phillip Fulmer is one of the best friends I have in this world. I am saddened to see the end of a great era in college football. Not only is Phillip a great person, he is the best football coach I've ever been associated with. His work ethic, attention to detail and recruiting efforts were lessons for all of us who were fortunate enough to work alongside him. I wish Phillip and his family the best as they move forward."

Good work, Regan. You're our very own fanblogs' sleuth...
  • Regan · 1 year ago
Thanks, WEA, I am trying to keep up on this...it's going to be bizarre not seeing Fulmer on Tennessee's sidelines. You don't get more Tennessee than that guy.
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
Wait until the season's over with Cutcliffe. I still think that's a possibility. I fully believe Spurrier and Davis though.
  • USC1801 · 1 year ago
    Kevin:

Does it sound like Cutcliffe is greasing the tracks with the Tenn fans? Or is it just me?
  • UT FAN · 1 year ago
Sad day for UT , Sad day for the Gamecocks .
  • gatorhippy · 1 year ago
Personally, I don't think the Vols need to look any further than their own state...

"Navin" Johnson is only 159 miles away to the west...

And he already knows what his "special purpose" is for...

I hope Mr. Spurrier never leaves us.
I pray that the Gamecock Nation will never again be so stupid as Clem and Tenn have been this year. Instant gratification is good, constant gratification is better. Babies expect that and good parents provide that to them.
  • gatorhippy · 1 year ago
    I doubt he would...

That membership at Augusta is way to precious to him...
  • KennethUT · 1 year ago
after wathing Fulmer break down,it nearly made me cry..I feel bad for him they could had atleast waited untill he coached his last game..
  • NolesTN · 1 year ago
you know..this is no surprise.i hate that it has ended for him but this is ten years in the making.i was a Vols fan until 99 season.then i began to see the decline of Fulmer reign.
  • TigerHater · 1 year ago
Why does the talk of Spurrier always start? The man is over the hill. He wins one now and then. That keeps Carolina happy since they don't expect much. To start again somewhere else . . . naaaw, ain't gonna happen.
  • NolesTN · 1 year ago
oh..Please!!!Spurrier is another one that needs to hang it up.everytime there is a coaching change somewhere his name is brought up.and he is said that he will always be a Gator.
  • USC1801 · 1 year ago
Actually, Spurrier has indicated he will not leave USC, and that he does not plan to do so until he retires. According to The State newspaper, Spurrier is not interested in the Tenn. job, and is quoted as saying that USC is "his last gig."
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
It's ridiculous how often people throw out his name for other jobs. It's extremely obvious that this is his last stop. I really wish people would get off of that idea.

I'm really just curious who will be the next coach for South Carolina. Spurrier can't have that many years left now.
  • Regan · 1 year ago
Joe Pa and Bobby Bowden are actually wrangling over who goes to the Graveyard of Coaches next...
  • USC1801 · 1 year ago
Yeah, I've had the same thought with all the changes taking place recently. I give Spurrier another year or two before he decides to ride off into the sunset.

If true, a lot can happen between now and then in the world of coaching. I wouldn't surmise at this point who it might be; however, my hope would be that the AD would be wise enough to pick someone who isn't enrolled with AARP.

Of course, age is not the only factor. No offense but Brad Scott set us back years, and he was supposed to be a young up-and-comer. However, I'd like to see a good young(er) coach with experience take the helm.
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
"No offense but Brad Scott set us back years..."

Why would I take offense to that? The only offense is that you let us have him. Of course, I like his son, and I think he's a real talent, but is it worth what his dad has done with the O line?
  • USC1801 · 1 year ago
Lol. . .yeah, well it was the Bowden connection that landed him back with "da family" at Clemson. I've nothing against him personally, but we were glad he moved on to the orange side of the field.
  • WENDY · 1 year ago
TENNESSE NEEDED AND NEW COACH T-MARTIN
HE LEAD US TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP RIGHT AFTER PEYTON MANNNING LEFT
T MARTIN WOULD BE BEST FOR TN
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
    Yes, that would be brilliant!

Tennessee should hire the head coach of North Cobb High School.
  • gatorhippy · 1 year ago
    LMAO...
  • dawgfan · 1 year ago
This is not a knock on UT, but it's going to be much tougher than ever before to win big there. Ever since Richt came to Athens, he has locked down the in-state recruits. UT has always been able to get athletes from GA in bunches. That's not the case anymore. Whoever's gets the job has got their work cut out for them in recruiting.
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
Auburn is still the prime poacher of Georgia prep talent, although the dark lord of West Alabama seems to be making some inroads...

Face it, until the state of Jawja gets more than TWO Division 1-A schools, there's going to be carpetbaggers coming in droves...
  • grover · 1 year ago
I really hope this does not spill to Auburn. Keep Tommy Tuberville!!
  • Cobia · 1 year ago
I hope Auburn keeps Tuberville as well. In regards to the UT coaching dilema, UT would be wise to go after Jim Leavitt from USF.
  • OU_Ron · 1 year ago
I think that's a good choice, that guy is intense, good idea....
  • OU_Fan · 1 year ago
I hope Auburn fires Tuberville. I would like to see him join the Big 12.
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
Perhaps we can work that aTm angle once again...

Or trade him to Tejas Tech for Leach? Wait. Not another 'spread' guru! Arrrrrgggggg!
  • OU_Fan · 1 year ago
I don't know if anyone has said this or not, but Tenessee needs to go after Boise State's Chris Peterson, period. To me, that would be their best choice. That hire would be equally comparable to lets say Utah's Urban Meyer.
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
Chris Petersen = Scientologist = Won't happen at Tennessee
  • 1Tomcat · 1 year ago
These type of changes should only occur at the end of the season, its not fair to the players and disrepectful to the coach and the team.
  • volstrike3 · 1 year ago
Leach is my choice. It won't take him 2/3 years to implement his offense and be effective... at least it didn't take that long at UK, OU or TTU and he is starting out with some decent skill position guys if he can settle on a QB.
  • Tyler_Tech · 1 year ago
It would take him alot longer than 2 to 3 years. Trust me...... and do not think for one second that your boosters or alum are going to want him to be the coach.
