Fanblogs.com: Give a Hoot! We Salute the Rice Owls!!!

  • WarEagleFan · 11 months ago
I had never heard that story or seen that clip before but WOW....I don't have sound on my work PC but what ever happened to that guy that came from the sidelines.
  • Bama_North · 11 months ago
He's still around, retired and living in Huntsville, AL. From what I hear he is suffering from alzheimer's these days and is not doing well, but he was signing autographs at the Kentucky game this year. I had heard the story of the 12th man tackle before, but had never seen that footage. Talk about emotions running high!
  • 1Tomcat · 11 months ago
Didn't they give Rice the touchdown which resulted in a Bama loss?
One of the great moments in CFB history
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 11 months ago
No, Rice won 28-6. The score at the time of the play was 7-6. Evidently, these teams liked this matchup so well, they scheduled a home and home for 1955 and 1956, and Rice won both games. This was all pre-Bear Bryant, however...

A good article for the rest of the story is right here.
  • 1Tomcat · 11 months ago
Thanks WEA I guess this was when the Bear was at Texas A&M during that time and faced the Owls every season. So the Owls did face Paul Bryant's team those years.
Thanks for the link and Info
    Go Owls
  • WarEagleFan · 11 months ago
DId he get kicked out of the game for that or thrown off the team? What would happen to a player today if the same thing was done?
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 11 months ago
The strangest thing about that play is that it's never happened again...

Can you imagine that on the ESPN highlight reel--a modern day version?

Wonder if it would qualify for the Pontiac Game Changing Moment?
  • OU_Ron · 11 months ago
If that happened in this day and time, the national guard would have to be called in to seperate the crowds, it wouldn't be a pretty sight....
  • TigerEducated · 11 months ago
I have a Sports Illustrated VHS from back in the day that they used to give out with new subscriptions, and Tim McCarver actually uses that highlight, and then talks to both of them...

They went on the Ed Sullivan show together afterwards...Sullivan asks him what was going through his mind...The Alabama player says, "Well...Ed...I was just SO FULL OF ALABAMA...."

    The crowd breaks up...

  • 1Tomcat · 11 months ago
Wow what a remarkable season going 9-3 on the year and 7-1 in conference play making this one of their best seasons since 1949 when they were SWC Champs going 6-0 in conference play.
Second year Coach David Bailiff was named C-USA coach of the year .The Owls spread offensive attack is #10 in total offense 472.3 ypg #5 in passing 327.8ypg and #8 in scoring averaging 41.6 ppg. Led by C-USA most valuable player Chase Clement who set 6 C-USA records. He has had 120 career TD's 96 passing had a total of 52 TD's this season rushed for 621 yds and threw for another 3812 yds making Clement #6 nationally in passing.
This is one tough kid from San Antonio who is right behind Daneil and Harrell and ahead of Reising and alot of other great Texas Quarterbacks.
His favorite targets are WR Jarrett Dillard with 1224 yds receiving and Academic All American Soph TE James Casey who has 1218 yds receiving.
Looks like we are going to see an offensive shootout in the Texas Bowl this year because Westeren Michigan QB Tim Hiller is #9 with 3527 yds passing.
If you dont like fast moving high scoring exciting football then dont watch the Texas Bowl this year.
    Go Owls

I gar-en-tee; I'll be looking forward to it, TC!
  • Ramblin' Gator · 11 months ago
If you ever find yourself in Houston during CFB season, I recommend you take in a Rice game. They have one of the nicest stadiums in the NCAA and it generally only sells out when they play UT or TAMU. It's also worth noting the Marching Owl Band (MOB) is one of the funniest, most irreverent, semi-musical marching ensembles in the world. Plenty of parking available and excellent eats at nearby Goode Company Barbecue.
  • Zac · 11 months ago
Great! It's another, "now I'm getting hungry" thread.
  • hrposon · 11 months ago
If you're in Houston during college baseball season, check out the Owls at Reckling Park, especially when the Horns and Ags come to town. They're as good as any team in the nation and you can still get great barbeque after the game.
  • Ramblin' Gator · 11 months ago
Good point. I used to live in West U and spent some time hanging out on the campus, taking graduate classes, attending football, baseball, and basketball games. My only complaint was they didn't have a big crop of pretty coeds, but there were always plenty of nurses working across the street at the med center.
  • 1Tomcat · 11 months ago
I've never been to Goodes- looked up on the web- they do use mesquite
I'll have to try it next time in H town-I have to admit that I'm really spoiled when it comes to great BBQ- We are cooking a brisket right now on pecan & Mequite, put it on round 11:30 and gonna pull it off around 18 ;00
BTW The places around here serve the brisket on butcher paper- no plates
  • 1Tomcat · 11 months ago
Ramblin Do you remember when the MOB played were o were has my little dog gone and formed a big fire hydrant after the A&M mascot passed away? The A&M corps was waiting outside the Rice locker room going to whup it up a little. Thats when the Aggies carried real swords.
    Go Owls
  • Ramblin' Gator · 11 months ago
I remember the story, but the only detail I recall is the MOB having to get police protection to leave the stadium. As you and I both know, Aggies aren't known for having a great sense of humor about all-things-Aggie.

I was remotely involved in a tragedy involving members of the MOB. There's an odd looking building in Houston at the corner of Kirby and Richmond near Rice U. Many years ago, MOB members were clowning around on the roof of this building and one of them fell to his death on the top level of the parking deck attached to the 4th floor of the building. Every year on the anniversary of his death, MOB alumni return to the spot where he fell and paint a memorial on the spot where it happened. When I worked at Digicon Geophysical (a company that no longer exists), my office was right next to the spot and I watched the alums paint the memorial from my office window a couple of times.
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 11 months ago
They do a chalk outline? That's the memorial?
  • hrposon · 11 months ago
The MOB gigs the Ags even when they are not playing that day.

Anyway, it doesn't look they will play again for a long time. A little bit of bad blood there.

That heisman snub is freaking awesome. Typical.
  • OU_Ron · 11 months ago
This is the wrong thread for that, but I agree, I feel bad for Harrell...
  • Tyler_Tech · 11 months ago
In my rage, I clicked on the first link possible..... :(
  • 1Tomcat · 11 months ago
Yes Tyler Tech Chase Clement has done a lot for his team
Did you know that Heisman used to coach at Rice.
BTW I saw the Texas Tech vs Rice game in 2007 first time we got to see the Crabman in action-awesome player- good luck in yalls bowl
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 11 months ago
But no one at Rice has ever won a Heisman trophy, TC. Do you know the only school that Heisman ever coached at that has so far?
  • WarEagleFan · 11 months ago
    PIck me...Pick me ... I know Iknow
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 11 months ago
Sit down. We're going to let someone else in the class answer that one...

    Bo Jackson?
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 11 months ago
No, sorry, Porky. That's incorrect. The answer we were looking for was 42. Yea, 42. Sorry...
  • 1Tomcat · 11 months ago
Tigers Sullivan 1971 then later Jackson
I didnt realize that G Tech, Clemson and Rice have never had a Heisman winner- interesting trivia tidbit-thanks WEA
  • Tyler_Tech · 11 months ago
Thanks. I wish Texas and Rice luck as well. Rice and Baylor are 2 programs
that have come a long way. I hope Ohio State is dismantled so bad that they
never get an at large BCS bid again.
  • 1Tomcat · 11 months ago
Ya Those teams have been at the bottom for a long time, both doing alot better with new HC's and total comittment in Athletics. The small high acedamic schools and private insitutions are at a disadvantage over real large state funded Universities.
TCU is the only one that has consistantly feilded a winning program in recent years.
BTW I listened to the BU @ Tech game on the Radio- man what a great game.
The Bears are definetly back and their quarterback is a superstar. We got to attend the A&M @ BU game- bout time for a little payback, that was alot of fun.

    Going to the Fiesta, TC?
  • 1Tomcat · 11 months ago
Na man- Went to a total of three CFB games this year- Lucky my brothers sister-in-law works for BU and got us in one game in Waco.
Attended two UT games- both in Austin one was 52-10 the other was 49-9. We usually dont travel too far- I'm scheduled to work the night of the Texas Bowl- might try to swing it somehow-highly unlikely, but would love to attend. We could go to Alamo bowl, but really dont care for either team. We went to one there UT vs Iowa thats a good place to see a game, not too far from home and they had draft Shiner.
    You going?
    Hookem=Horns
  • hrposon · 11 months ago
    Wouldn't miss it.
OSU and Texas travel well so the place will be packed. This will be the third time in four years that they square off and each team has a win. I expect a great game.
    Horns, 45-35....
  • 1Tomcat · 11 months ago
Wow Yall have fun- sounds like it ought to be a good one, I hope the Horns bring their A game because tOSU always plays tough against the Horns. The Horns can beat any team in the country including Bama,USC, Fla etc etc
Yes we already know 45-35 that game was awesome.
If you beat #1 that makes you #3

I don't like any closed in stadium like the Alamo Dome. Domes are for the the NFL, the fantasy and corporate box guys. Real football, college football needs to be outside. The good thing about Reliant stadium is that the roof opens. We'll probably go the the Texas Bowl. The tickets will be cheap. For the Rutgers K-State game a couple of years ago, I paid $10 at the last minute.
Houston wants to put fannies in the seats to prove that they can host a BCS plus 1 or plus 3 game.
  • 1Tomcat · 11 months ago
Cool I'm scheduled to work during most of the Bowls. I agree that outdoor stadiums are alot better. We attended a UT vs Rice game a few years ago and it was at Reliant Stadium- instead of Rice Stadium-I'm guessing for beer sales- I dunno- It was a night game and I think the roof was closed cant really remember. I felt kinda sorry for the Owls, because they were out numbered bad, kinda hard to draw a crowd when the team goes 1-11. I always liked Hatfeilds option running attack reminded me of the old UT offense.
We were all impressed with Todd Grahamn & Major Applewhite coached team and to go from 1-11 to 7-6 was a heck of an accomplishment. Now Chase Clement & Jarred Dillard are under their third head coach and going to appear in their second bowl. I sure hope they win the game, because both of these guys have had terrific CFB careers would be great for them to go out on top.
I'm going to get some Shiner 99 and a can of picaso's peanuts.I'll be looking at the 42 vizio.
    Go Owls
