Fanblogs.com: I've got to go...T. Boone Pickens just walked in my door...and he's broke!

  • 1Tomcat · 1 year ago
Thanks TE for this interesting news about financial stuff-very good
Now back to the bolts and nutts- This weekend's game is bigger than ever, bigger than OU vs UT and bigger than Missu vs UT, heck this game is bigger than any other game played this week- period. Thanks to T.E. for bringing a little bit of exposure to this weeks game, which happens to be the biggest game of the year-just like ever game the Longhorns play.
    Thanks to T.E.

Probably the only time I'll say this, but GO POKES!! I hope the Cowboys bring the pain to McCoy and I hope they send the Horns fans home in tears. Heres to McCoy throwing multiple interceptions.....BOOMER!

Tomcat, I feel badly for Mike Gundy & his boyz. They've really gotten it together this year, only to wonder if some repossession crew is gonna come in and knock down the new stadium for parts.

Over the last 6 seasons the best they've done was 9-4 & 8-5. The rest of the way, they could do little better than average 6 wins a season. This year, save for their visit to Mizzou, OK St has absolutely dominated. They won at WA St by 26 and scored an average of 56 pts/game over their next 4 games.

Now, you can argue, lots of "O" & no "D". Well, they sure held Chase Daniels and company (averaged over 53 pts/game before they met) to 23 pts in Columbia. They also held Baylor to 6 pts. I know; it's Baylor, right? Well, this is a team which scored an average of 42 pts over 4 games (includes 3 pt loss at UConn); among which they beat WA St by 28. You have touted Baylor's offense as being impresive. The point is this; the Cowboys can play defense when they have to.

Without question, TX is as solid as I've seen em in a long time. Yes, they've put together many a 10-win season over the past 10 years or so, but this team has most of them beat, in my opinion. Still, there's no reason the Cowboys can't stand up to the Horns. It all comes down to intensity; which team really gives it 110%. TX is coming off back-to-back dominations against emotional rivalries. This is OK St's 2nd trip in 3 games; they've proven they can play well on the road. But, the team they beat in Columbia got destroyed in Austin. Then again, for how many games can TX maintain that kind of intensity?

What has to be most frustrating to OK St fans where TX is concerned, involves this tale of two halves or even 3 qtrs. Since 2004, OK St has led the horns big at the half, only to squander the lead in the 2nd half. Last year TX came back to beat OK St in the final seconds, as I recall. Something tells me if the Horns get down big to this team, they won't come back. However, something else tells be the Horns won't get down big, if they get down to the Cowboys at all.
  • 1Tomcat · 1 year ago
Zac- What it comes down to, is two undefeated teams meeting -head up
throw out all the stats and history- its all wide open
This is what its all about, from the git go
Its anybodies game-who wants it bad enough
It will be about mental preparation- because both teams really matchup
From the very begining of the season all the talk including this site was all about
OU and Missu- both good teams, however as you recall, I posted on here that Texas Tech, Oklahoma state,Kansas and Texas also feild tough teams and since Texas gets to play everyone of those teams- nobody really gave them any chance of doing anything, well this weekend OSU vs UT and Texas Tech vs KU somebody is gonna win and somebody is going to lose= does it mean that one team is better than the other?- not necessally- they just happened to play a better game on that particular day.

wow we might actually see a university's president break down and cry on camera after this. talk about getting royally f'ed in the A!!!

Actually, we all know what's going to happen. Future board meeting convo

"So how are we going to pay for this?"
"What public school has the highest tuition?"
"I believe that would be Penn St. sir."
"hm alright then raise our tuition to exactly $1 less than theirs. HAHA at least we're not the most expensive!"
"Um sir that will probably be the largest tuition increases in a single year for any public school.......ever......"
"Hmmm good point....Well take all the new students on tour through the FINISHED suites in the new stadium. So they get a good idea of the place they'll never be able to afford. Be sure to put a tip jar at the end connected to a long tube which drops it off at the bottom of the stadium where the construction workers' can collect their hourly pay. Ha! I am a genious!!"

Funny stuff there, shyguy, but it's the univeristy of Rhode Island which requires the highest tuition of any state-run university. Just FYI.

So, ya happy about last night's game?

Ha ya you could say that. Made my $50 ticket worth every penny! I havn't gone to the early games because i'm going to go damn near broke on the next set going to Auburn, Cincy, Pitt, and S. Fl.

    TE:

I find it a little hard to understand, how a guy with that kinda cheese, could be so ignorant as to not protect some of it along the way. I mean, I can see losing a large percentage, as many have - but all of it? I always have a more cynical mind. And, with that kinda money laying around somewhere, my first inclination is always that someone got their hand in that cookie jar. I mean, I'm sure that the University got stuck with the bill, but I really doubt if ol' T. Boone Pickens didn't somehow recover some of his "gift".
  • Kevin @ Fanblogs · 1 year ago
Its amazing to me that this endowment wasn't re-insured by Lloyds. How do you not cover your six when the guy who made the donation has been rich/broke/rich/broke/rich over the years?
  • OU_Ron · 1 year ago
No problem, just sell the wool from this years flock to pay the bill, then change the name of the stadium from " Boone Pickens Stadium " to " Been Fleeced by Pickens Stadium "
  • Tommy_Trojan · 1 year ago
Oh, that's a good one. I like it. We'll get BC to pimp off that wool - since he don't use that stuff no more.

  • grover · 1 year ago
I think (I'm not sure) the government has some blame here too. As I recall he made the gift during the final days of the year in 2006, so he could have a tax writeoff that year. The IRS let him have the tax writeoff and keep control of the funds. That's analagous to me 'giving' my car to someone, taking a $20,000 tax writeoff, but I keep the car and get to drive it when/where I want to.

In a normal gift you sell the asset and donate cash. I am sure OSU would have had tighter terms on how they could have invested that money (read - not all at risk in hedge fund), and this problem would not be, The IRS should never have allowed those terms at the time of the original gift.

You dorks just don't get it do you? The T-boone got major bones. He is trying to buy a legacy. He cares one heck of lot more about his own wallet, than he does about dear old OSU.
  • WT Fan · 1 year ago
Perhaps OSU should have looked at T. Boone's prior university gifts and saw how he followed through. Back in the Mesa Petroleum days, he "gifted" West Texas University (WTAMU) $1,000,000. in futrure pledges. He gave stock worth $200,000.00, Mesa stock fell in price and T. Boone walked.................................................................. Another university got the shaft from T. Boone, just smaller dollers back then.
  • Tom_Blogical · 1 year ago
Don't go after T. Boone Pickens! He's a heartbroken millionaire! Come after ME! I'm a MAN, I'm 40!! Makes me wanna puke.

    * - Not said by Mike Gundy. And in case anyone wants to revisit that clip, here it is.

Anyhoo, all kidding aside, this is just flabbergasting. It's going to be interesting to see what kind of world class financial gymnastics they're going to have to perform just to keep from going bankrupt. I'm betting there are a lot of other departments that'll be squeezed for some cash. Maybe they'll get lucky and Warren Buffet will feel sorry for them.
  • Zac · 1 year ago
Hell, why not appeal to Bill Gates? $200M is a drop in the bucket to him. For that matter, the interest for 2007 on Harvard's endowments exceeded $4B. Seems they could afford a charitable contribution for something as "educational" as this endeavor turned out to be.

Actually, if the government can afford to dole out $900B to help the banking industry w/bad mortgages...(Doesn't this qualify for a "bad mortgage?) OK, I'll stop.
  • Tom_Blogical · 1 year ago
Well yeah, either one will do, but Warren Buffet's net worth is $62 billion compared to Bill Gates' $58.2 billion, the last time Forbes checked it out in March. (The link is to Yahoo Finance but the info is from Forbes.) So I guess Buffet would feel it less, so to speak. And Buffet just made a few millions off the recent financial fiasco by buying a failing bank or two.

    You're definitely right though--Gates wouldn't blink at a $200 million donation.

Looks like another fine example of how the American Taxpayer can always be counted on to bail out our beloved billionaire tycoons. Maybe it will be limited to Okie tax dollars; probably not though. Ok's congressmen will make a plea to the generous folk is DC to split the tab--some way or another (pork).

...and TBP writes off all the paper losses while hanging on to the hard assets that generated the value in the first place, and he'll be filthy rich all over again, within a matter of months....

All for the greater good though, right? Why his work in developing alternative energy sources....I'll stop myself right here; let the reader's political bent lead him where it will.

Perhaps the bankruptcy court will need to find a place to park all these wind turbines that probably collateralized something. Maybe on campus?

Yes, perhaps Gundy can deflect some of this heat unto himself. He's a man, although I believe he's 41 now. I'm 40 this year, the only time I can make that claim. I've got 2 months left...

T-Boone is as old as dirt. Rumor has it that he did a similar situation with the Romans and their Coloseum. When the olive oil market tanked back in 34 A.D., T. Boone's money dried up and the Romans had to go arrange sub-prime financing on the structure. The resulting high interest rate guaranteed that the mortgage on the Coloseum wouldn't be paid off until 2028.

Obviously, they let their home owners insurance lapse. Have you seen that place lately? It's in shambles--ever since the NFL-Europe tanked. They raped you at the concession stands. A hot dog and a glass of chianti was $50.

However, the problems there are still not as bad as the flood insurance problem they had in Venice...
  • Tommy_Trojan · 1 year ago
    WEA:

And that is why the Los Angeles Rams had to leave and so did the UCLA Bruins and the L.A. Raiders...And, a bottle of water costs more than a hot dog. And, parking on some homeowners lawn costs more than the tickets do. And, you'll be lucky if your 24's are still there when you get back to your sled. Yep, the only thing it's any good for nowadays, is to "sacrifice" all visiting college football teams to "Zeus".

This story reminds me of a gift given to LSU a few decades ago. In 1980 C.B. "Doc" Pennington gave LSU the largest single donation (at that time) ever given to a university, $125,000,000. It was to be used to start a Bio-Medical Research Center in Baton Rouge. The only problem was that LSU had to raise the funds annually to operate this facility so it was built but sat unused for a couple of years while they did that. If you have ever been in Baton Rouge and driven south down Perkins Road you have probably driven past it.
  • JaredIsKing · 1 year ago
This may be California elitism, but why would anyone in good conscience donate money to an SEC school in support of anything academic…on that note, I have always found TE's moniker to be a bit of an oxymoron.
  • Bama_Babe · 1 year ago
    Excuse me, Peasant Jared?
I must defend the university I attend.

The University of Alabama has had more Academic All-Americans than Harvard.

And all SEC schools have great academic programs. You're obviously can't accept the fact that we have great football programs AND academics.

"all SEC schools have great academic programs"

Let's not get carried away here. Mississippi, and Mississippi State are not great, and really are not even remotely good. They currently reside in the not so respected Tier 3. LSU stepped it up and joined tier 1 this year, but they were Tier 3 last year and being reprimanded for academic shortcomings as a program. They are taking steps in the right direction, but let's hold off on that "great" label. Actually, in my opinion, for whatever it's worth, a school should at least be in the top 100 to be "great". From the SEC, that's only 5 schools.
    18 - Vanderbilt
    49 - Florida
    58 - Georgia
    83 - Alabama
    96 - Auburn

Congrats on attending one, but 7 of the schools in your conference aren't helping out.

Since the Big Televen and the ACC do not have anyone not in the top tier, I think it's safe to say that you could apply the "great" label to both of those.

    http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/c...

Edit: One thing that I found interesting, is that there are 6 conferences that don't have a school in the 4th Tier. That would be the 6 that currently make up the BCS. I'm sure there isn't a correlation, but it does seem appropriate, at least to me.
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
I object to the use of US NEWS and world reports for academic standings for reasons stated here
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
Sure it has flaws, but it's what schools pay attention to. Therefore, they respond to their placement there, and by the Princeton College Review. I don't think you can make a ranking of any kind that doesn't have flaws.

Look no further than college football's top 25 for proof of that.
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
Just for clarification, are you really citing a list that ranks Ohio State as a better school than Harvard?
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
Actually I was refering more to the list of problems with the US News report. The NSF data is a factor for a ranking, not a stand alone value.

Ya Ron you could be right- everything favors the Cowboys in this one.
The Cowboys always play the Horns tough and this year will be no different. The Cowboys have a real strong running game- The Horns have a real strong Defense against the run- interesting matchup.
The Cowboys have a real strong-O-line and the Horns have some blitzing/sacking DE's and LB's this ought to be a good one. The Horns have a purty good offensive attack, can the Cowboys D stop them? They did good against Missu and won the turnover battle. If the Horns can play a clean game and limit turnovers, they will probably win the game, a couple of TOs could possibly make the difference in the outcome of this one. Seems like the same thing we were talking about in last weeks game. The Horns need to give it 100% and I just hope all the Hype/Media BS doesnt mess them up, because this is probably the best OSU team that UT has ever faced. Glad the game is in Austin instead of Stillwater -98,000 ought to make some noise, The Horns are 10-0 against the Cowboys and Mike I'm a man has got his team fired up ready to play. Here in the B-12 its like a Championship game every week. Two top ten undefeated teams head to head.

I am a huge OU fan for life and recently have slowly migrated to the NFL because of the crazy nature of NCAA football. Poor officials and reviews!! The single idea that a college team full of young kids have to go undefeated to claim they are the best is crazy. Think about the NFL that has SUPER STARS at ever position and how can you say who's the best? Now how can you say that one team in college is so much better when at most they have 2 or 3 NFL starters on their roster!! Now I think that Oklahoma State has the confidence and the motivation to beat TEXAS. OSU has destroyed them the past two years but let them comeback from 35 points down which no team has done to TEXAS very often. As bad as this hurts an OU fan please don't beleive the sheep and follow because this OSU team has nothing to loose just like TEXAS vs OU. OSU will cut loose everything and beat TEXAS at home!! Yes I said it please understand what has happened the past 2 years OSU has dominated TEXAS but let them get back in the game. I think OSU will lose this season and there will be NO undefeated teams this year so just believe that any Saturday any college program can lose just like boxing it's mostly HYPE!!!!!!!!!! GO COWBOYS
