Fanblogs.com: Jayhawks makes Mangino third highest paid coach in Big XII

  • OU_Ron · 1 year ago
I just hope he will lose some weight so he can collect all of his money, I think he's a walking heart attack...
  • Kevin @ Fanblogs · 1 year ago
    Easy there, chief. :-)
  • OU_Ron · 1 year ago
Sorry, just went on a diet myself, diet's make you cranky....
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
Kinda reminds me of Rick Majarus.
  • 4cornerz · 1 year ago
Wow, I am the first to comment. That is great maybe KU will become a national power
  • JB · 1 year ago
I think KU jumped the gun on this one....have at least two conseutive winning seasons before you pay a coach $2,300,000
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
I agree 100%. They play a tougher schedule this year, and they should've waited to see how that played out. Although, he is the best non-basketball thing to happen in Lawrence in quite a while.
  • JB · 1 year ago
Yea, that is true, but with Kansas' dismal football history i wouldve waited this one out a little longer
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
Maybe they got a little overzealous with that unfamiliar big bowl money and that not so unfamiliar basketball title money.

JB, Mangino's Jayhawks did accomplish some good things last season. They finished 12-1; they won at CO (something OK didn't do); and they beat VA Tech in the Orange Bow (something few thought they could do). Now, I duly admit; they also did it (especially the 12-1 part) during a season in which OK & TX were curiously absent from their schedule. After all, OK beat MO twice, and MO won at KS.

The point is, I agree. While I like Mark Mangino and wish him nothing but the best, and I think he did deserve a raise + incentives, given last season's accomplishments, I think they went over-board.

By the way, Kevin, what's with warning Ron over the weight issue? I thought he expressed genuine concern. I didn't see anything abusive there. In fact, there was a lot worse put in print during a Mangino thread last season. I'm only asking as I would like to know where the line is drawn.

I finally figured out the apostrophe (') thing. Apparently posts don't always translate well when cut from Word, then pasted to this site.

    well deserved...good coach.
Give the Linebackers coach a raise too! Steve Tovar(former Buckeye) is my old highschool teammate.
  • Zac · 1 year ago
Cool, CD! What was he like to be around? (I hope you didn't learn of his skills in practice. . .1st hand.)
  • cdogg · 1 year ago
Steve Tovar wore bifocals and was very goofy. Never went to parties..always studied. had him in my mechanical drawing class. They announced over thePA system that he was going to Ohio State on a full ride football scholarship. He had the goofiest laugh you would ver hear. He now obviously has contact lenses (or had laser eye procedure). Cool guy.....hit like a freight train at linebacker. Nice dude.
  • Lennie Collins · 1 year ago
Can he motivate his team to beat the Missouri Tigers? That should have been an incentive!
  • Sooner_Girl_in_Texas · 1 year ago
I'm quite anxious to see what KU will do. I'm a big Mangino fan (he's a former Sooner after all). My sister is getting married in October. She and her fiance picked a date that they thought wouldn't be a big game...turns out it's the OU/KU game. Who would've thought that'd end up having the potential to be a good game?!?!
  • Zac · 1 year ago
Hey, look, everybody. We got Lennie, A Sooner Knight in King Long Horn's Court, and now a Sooner Princes in the same place. By chance have you two met?
  • Lennie Collins · 1 year ago
No, I wouldn't mine. My new girlfriend and her would probably make good friends. My new girlfriend loves college football BUT she will not tell me who her favorite team is. I do not care if she likes the Longhorns.I am love with her not what team she likes!
  • Sooner_Girl_in_Texas · 1 year ago
No, we haven't met, or at least not that we know of.
  • Lennie Collins · 1 year ago
You have not met me. I live across the street from Westwood High near Cedar Park. I don't go out has much has I use to BUT I do wear my Oklahoma Sooners gear EVERY Saturday throughout the season. I actually would like to get a Sooners Fan Club started in Austin. I only met 1 female Sooners' fan in Austin and that was about 3 years ago. She was in her 40's.
  • Sooner_Girl_in_Texas · 1 year ago
I live in the Arboretum area. I'm the only female Sooner fan I know in Austin, I'm in my mid-20s. I'd be interested in joining a Sooner fan club in August. I've got quite a few Sooner friends in Austin, we usually get together to watch the games. Keep me posted.
  • Kevin @ Fanblogs · 1 year ago
OK. Gotta take this back over to the open thread. (And please say no when they ask for pics!) ;-)
  • Sooner_Girl_in_Texas · 1 year ago
No worries, I wouldn't post a pic, nor email a pic of myself to anyone. I'm here for football, and nothing more :)
  • Zac · 1 year ago
I like her already!!! So then, your opinion: Will Mangino's Hawks repeat the feats of last year? If they do, should he get another raise and even more incentives? If they fall back to 7-5 or even 6-6, what then?
  • Sooner_Girl_in_Texas · 1 year ago
No, I don't think it'll be a repeat season. As others have already pointed out, KU didn't play OU or UT last season. Sure, there's a shot that they could maybe win one of those games, but both? And it'll be interesting to see what Mizzou will do. Tech has the potential to be good this year (but don't they always? I guess potential is the operative word here), and KU has to play in Lubbock on their homecoming, so yea, that'll be a tough game as well.

In terms of $, I dunno, I don't pay much attention to coaches' salaries honestly.

Last year's season had to help with recruitment and should continue to help, so it'll be interesting to see where they go from here.
  • Lennie Collins · 1 year ago
If you want you can give me you and your friends information and I along with my girlfriend and son can join you all for some games. I live not too far from you. Maybe we can all form a Sooners fan club. My friend Chase is in one BUT he is a real estate agent and is working ALL the time on Saturdays. He never gave me the info about the one he is/was in.
  • Sooner_Girl_in_Texas · 1 year ago
And seeing how I'm probably the only Sooner lady in here, I'd much prefer to be Queen :)
  • JB · 1 year ago
To be realistic, i bet KU loses to Mizzou, OU, UT, TTU, Neb, USF, and Colo....reality check!!!! back to mediocrity!!!
  • JB · 1 year ago
HAHAHA Ray Nagin joke!!! will it be in New Orleans??? to be rational i bet Texas beats KU Mizzou UTEP ARK and A&M with two losses OU and TTU ummmm ihave no idea whatso ever as to why this comment appeared here , it is supposed to be under LEnnies comment about Texas losses for the upcoming season
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
They say that Mangino is only one or two players away from a Big 12 championship. I say he's only one prime rib dinner away from the cardiac unit...

    Sorry, Kev...

BTW, how's your health these days? We haven't gotten a report lately and I haven't seen anything on your blog.
  • Lennie Collins · 1 year ago
Hey War Eagle Atlanta...Mark Mangino is good people. Let him make it!
  • 1Tomcat · 1 year ago
Ya I agree, He can now afford those heavy duty new springs installed on his Isuzu, for those bumpy roads ahead.Mangino should have gotten Coach of the year award or something, he really turned his team around and this year we will find out more about the Jayhawks. All Joking aside, I really respect the man and enjoy watching his team play.
The Jayhawks could go all the way next year, and with Missu,Colo, UT and OU on their schedule every game will be like a championship.
Now that he is making the big bucks, is he going to have a motorcade like Saban?
They should probably erect a statue in his honor on campus. He will go down in history as one of the greatest in KU history. Congrats on your big raise Coach now whip OU.
BTW I heard that he purchased a new Moped and has been seen riding around campus. I don't believe the rumor floating around about him on the dancing with the stars T.V. show, not this year anyway.
  • Lennie Collins · 1 year ago
Kansas chances of beating Oklahoma are very slim. Kansas chances of beating Texas are very good! Oklahoma 45 Kansas 10 & Kansas 77 Texas 35.
  • 1Tomcat · 1 year ago
KU loses 2 games this year, both to UT
one during the regular season and one in CCG
OU loses five KU,UT ,BU, A&M and TCU
  • Lennie Collins · 1 year ago
Texas LOSES *8* games this year:
