Fanblogs.com: LSU vs. Georgia: Will the Real Contender Please Stand Up?

  • Tommy_Trojan · 1 year ago
    TE:

You've outdone yourself as usual. Last time I agreed with you - I was wrong. I don't think that even you can be wrong twice in a row. So, I'll have to go with your pick again.

It's not all that complicated though. I think that LSU will wear down and dismantle the Georgia offensive line. They'll need to blitz and keep the pressure on from the beginning. There is no way that those receiver's get open with no time. They need to mix up the blitzing packages, coming from different directions, at all times. This way they will be able to catch Moreno in the backfield on more than one occasion. This will set up certain passing situations and give LSU more flexibility in their blitzing. I think that if LSU comes with the same defensive scheme, that they used on South Carolina in that 2nd half, that no other aspect of this game will matter.

LSU can simply grind out the game on the ground on offense. Lee could be afforded a few 3rd down passes and LSU will still score some points. I look for Georgia to make mistakes on offense, which will result in LSU owning field position, therefore shortening the field for the offense. I think the game will be lower scoring. I'll call it: LSU 17 Georgia 13.
  • TigerEducated · 1 year ago
Well, the problem with that grind-it-out theory is that Georgia is an excellent team against the run. LSU has had problems getting a dominant performance out of its offensive line, and while we've found something with the two-headed monster in Charles Scott & Keiland Williams in the same backfield (Scott at FB), it remains to be seen if LSU can truly get untracked on the ground, against a quality opponent.

If LSU does in fact struggle to get the ground game going, Jarret going vertical is definitely something to watch for. Forcing Georgia to respect the deep ball, and taking a few early shots in the 1st half, might open the game up on the ground once you get about midway through the 3rd quarter...
  • Tommy_Trojan · 1 year ago
    TE:

Notice the low score that I put up there? I said that LSU would "grind it out" on the ground - not "dominate" on the ground. I think that LSU will really try and control the clock in this one. When I mentioned that Lee may get some 3rd down shots - I mean that quite literally. I could see LSU running on 1st and 2nd downs almost exclusively to kill clock. They may even pick up a defensive TD. All I'm saying, is that with the weakened Georgia OL situation, that if LSU takes advantage of that - then it's really not gonna matter what LSU does on offense. Remember this, when a defense completely dominates a team, there isn't too much the offense can do wrong. Against Arizona State we were a -27 favorite. The Trojan offense turned the ball over five times and played terrible that day. Sanchez was hobbling around out there with a real bum knee. The Arizona State defense actually looked as good as I ever remember them. None of that mattered. The Southern Cal defense was so overpowering - that ASU could do absolutely nothing at all. The final score was 28-0 - and USC covered that line. Now that looks like an OK game, but I'm telling you, that was the poorest offensive performance from the Trojans since the UCLA game back in 06'. Again, it simply doesn't matter when your defense can dominate. I have to imagine that one of these two defenses will take over the game. My bet is that it's gonna be LSU's defensive front that puts the wood to Georgia's OL, providing of course, that the defensive technicians on the LSU staff don't resort to laying back and being intimidated by Matt Stafford. If they go after him they'll win the game.

I don't care who you are...that there is funny as hell.

Back to the game...even though I am not impressed with either GA or LSU, I will take the Bayou Bengals.
  • Bama_Babe · 1 year ago
Hmm, sorry I didn't get my pick to you earlier TE. ;)

I've been back and forth on this one all week.
LSU does have the home field advantage, and Georgia's o-line is very young...

BUT, I have to go with the more experienced quarterback in this one, because both defenses have proven themselves. I believe it will come down to which quarterback can make the big plays and not turn it over.
It should be a good one.

    What a surprise...

JUST when I start to like you, you come out with something like this...

    Sheesh, B_B...

My personal theory may be changing, as I review Georgia's games...They are allegedly tough against the run, but most teams have played from behind against them, and in doing so, they essentially had to abandon it in order to play catch up.

South Carolina & Bama are different, in that USC couldn't run the ball...and Bama shredded them like Teenwolf in the Closet playing spin the bottle...

In other words, against LSU's offensive line and a talented rushing attack, and assuming that LSU's defense holds early, Georgia's stop troops are going to have to prove they can effectively stop a ground game for 4 quarters...Which they have not shown capable of thusfar through the season...

I am highly disappointed in your tardiness with that pick, and the actual pick itself...

I need to "re-educate" you, somehow...
  • Bama_Babe · 1 year ago
    I know, I know. I apologize... ;)

This was honestly a toss-up, as we've seen two very different teams from both LSU and Georgia this year. Guess we'll have to wait until tomorrow to see which of those teams show up..

I think Bama_Babe has brought out a new softer side of TE. In the ol' days, the above response would have had a much different tone.

Let me say that I wouldn't touch this game with a 10' pole, but since I don't bet anymore I can take a guess. I am going to have to give this game to LSU because of home field advantage and Miles is a better big game coach than Richt (IMHO).

Either way, I know that it should be a fun one to watch!

    Observer:

You are absolutely correct. You have analized this one correctly. I have many male friends that often approach the "target" with way too much kindness and sweetness. They usually end up with a "big fat zero" on the ol' scorecard. The guy who presents himself as "more of a challenge", or flat out "just needs fixin'", is gonna hit the long ball way more often.

I think that if TE resorted back to his normal "sweet self", and treated the ladies the same way that he treated most folks, then he would be very appealing to a lot more women folk out there. In fact, if he abused them as well as he abuses most of his male counterparts, they would love him forever and never leave. Heck, he wouldn't be able to beat them off of him with a baseball bat.

This is hilarity at its finest, and seeing as how I linked this story to my home site earlier this morning, I'm sure I'm getting an absolute excoriation over there...as well as here...

Needless to say, my proclivities in regards to the opposite sex are typically chivalrous & extremely polite, but as one of my best friends once said, "Gary's got a mouthpiece on him...He'll say anything to anyone...But...Don't ever let a [derogatory name for female uttered in confidence amongst male friends] get stupid with him. He'll disrespect her quick."

That was when I was in my early 20's...and that time's long past...But, I can still channel my inner Ike Turner-sans physicality of course-when need be...

Definitly going to be a good game. Lsu's defensive front is scary, even going 3 deep, but if georgias hogs can wear em down a liitle bit and stafford plays like he can, i like georgias chances in this one.
  • blackdawg · 1 year ago
    TE: Good job,

All of us dawgs aren't barking too loud at the moment. We're waiting to see if our team can find another gear like last year around this time. I predict it will be a tough, tight game. A good number of my friends are in Baton Rouge tonight, I couldn't make the trip.

We'll definitely need to get pressure on Lee or he might have his best game yet. Our corners are suspect as well. We are also down to one tight end, Figgins. What I heard today is that Southerland and Chappas, both FB's, we'll get some playing time at tight end. Kiante Tripp who started the first two games at left tackle was seeing some practice time at tight end until Vance went down, now he is back on the line.

Looking forward to the game... should be a good one.
  • Darrell · 1 year ago
I thought LSU was better than they are when they played Florida. SC stuck it to LSU and could have won the game with very little offense. Moreno has never really gotten on track this season. This should be a good game, but if UGA can establish the run, this won't be much of a game.

Relocated this post for maximum effect:

Our F-ing defense is garbage. A patchwork Georgia O-line is opening holes I could run through. It's embarrassing to watch. Time to get drunk!

Add to that....it looks like Georgia brought their own ref's to the game too. Wonderful, just wonderful.

Those two defensive coordinators we have are about as useless as a one-legged man in an azz kicking contest.

You first posted that 3 hours ago, so how drunk are you now?

It sucks to lose, but it still fits right in with your preseason prediction. It sucks to be right sometimes.
  • GeauxTigers0107 · 1 year ago
joe, I decided to move it to the game thread because I thought it fit better here. And the wife wants to go have a couple of cocktails tonight so I decided to slack off on the vodka till later.

Still on par for 9-3 record though...youre right. Honestly, I think Ole Piss may have a chance to beat us too. So maybe 9-3 isn't safe after all.

It amazes me that Lee was that highly rated coming out of high school. He's mediocre at best. I know, I know, he's a freshman, first time starting in his life at anything, anywhere. But damn, this kid can't see a defender to save his azz. He has ZERO field vision. Or it could be that he thinks he throws it alot, and I mean a whole lot, harder than he really does.

Bottom line is this team is barely a top 20 team at this point. They may even drop further than that. Hang on though, somebody (wink) will have a better explanation of why we got desimated........................again..........................AND AT HOME.

Congrats to all you Georgia fans on here. Yall boys played one helluva game. Then again, that's starting to become a trend against us.

I have to admit I was not at all 100% confident that we would pull this one out, but a great game. The kids on the line played strong, (the OL starting to look fit to me, just in time for Florida) Stafford played smart. Moreno and Green, it was another day at the office. LSU kept hanging around and are just dang tough at home. I think maybe we'll have something for the gators.
  • dan gremillion · 1 year ago
for lsu, here is the keyword: quarterback. the key motto: dont recruit black quarterbacks unless there are no other options. in the pros it is different. watch t.v. had lsu not recurited perriloux, they would have had their choice of more than 1 other great qbs. perriloux disentigrated and lsu was left with a redshirt freshman who cant help throwing interceptions. hell, he is a greenhorn. look at the college qbs across the nation who are kicking ass and you will know what i mean. no racism here, it is just the facts, ma'am. wake up and getrdun. dg

  • PrinceMarko · 1 year ago
I'm missing Lloyd Carr like a hole in my head.

He was overly conservative and never had his team play up to their talents.

How do you think any team would do with zero starters back from the previous year on offense and a totally new system implemented?

With all those picks for TDs, I was beginning to think that Jamie Howard was back pitching the ball for the Tigers...

Take away those mistakes and about 4 plays over 50 yards and LSU might have won. Everytime I went to take a leak, Georgia scored on some big play...

Looks like the Gumps will take the West, unless LSU can beat them AND get a little help from their friends...
  • TigerEducated · 1 year ago
    Well, well, well...

You can say what you want about a young quarterback with laser-lock vision on receivers...But, then again, when you have an NFL caliber left side of your offensive line and an NFL caliber back, why are you starting off the game with a young quarterback with an empty backfield and four wideouts and throwing a FIVE YARD PASS?

When you take out a guy that when you're down 21 points in the 2nd half, and you run the ball-10 straight times-you effectively screw yourself.

But, let's not twist it...This is-once again-on the Defensive Coordinators.

After Florida, we complained of a lack of pressure...What happens? Well, obviously, Bradley Dale Peveto's role as a coordinator and schemer was no longer muted, and we saw the Express package, stunting, twisting, and-against a kid in his 1st start-they caused 6 sacks and two turnovers.

Against Georgia, and an experienced quarterback, we did try to blitz, and we did try to pressure, but our secondary was TORCHED...

Yet, we have a two-deep depth chart in our secondary that everyone in America wanted. We outdueled the likes of Michigan, Florida, Auburn, & Alabama for the kids we have starting...Yet, we get torched in crucial situations.

Bottom line, we've recruited, we do WONDERS in the S&C program in the offseason, and we have chemistry on this staff. What we don't have is great coaching on defense.

Case in point...Bradley Dale Peveto gets a corner blitz call into the game on a 3rd down & 5 in the 3rd quarter...I believe its UGA's 1st possession...We send the highest ranked cornerback in America last year out of high school, by the name of Patrick Peterson...#7...

He does NOT get to the QB, which is alright, IF you harass the passer or affect the passer in some way...Which he simply does NOT. No hands up, no jumping, no hands or body in the passing lane...NOTHING to affect the quarterback that he doesn't get to.

Stafford reads blitz-because our REAL Defensive Coordinator, Mallory, doesn't disguise sh!t, even if he does pressure-checks down, and the receiver breaks off his route for a short slant...

No big deal, as the Safety slides up for coverage in a blitz situation. Only, it was a problem, because we have the secondary (Who Mallory is also in charge of) whose playing an 8 yard soft underneath to the receiver, who easily catches the pass, converts the 3rd down, and keeps the chains moving, on their way to score a touchdown on a drive where they converted three 3rd downs...

Breaking this play down, its DUMB, all the way around.

DUMB to blitz this offensive line with your secondary on a 3rd down & 5 or greater. They are weak on the offensive front, and you want to take advantage of that with a linebacker to win that challenge, physically. Sending a kid from the secondary makes no sense here.

DUMB that this kid doesn't get his hands up in the passing lane, or try to jump up and bat the pass down, or SOMETHING to affect the passer...This is coaching. This kid is not being coached on this in practice. This is on his position coach, and the REAL Defensive Coordinator, Doug Mallory...

DUMB that the Safety is playing 8 yards off at the snap on a telegraphed blitz call on 3rd and 5 against an experienced QB & WR (Massoquai-a senior-caught it). You know both these kids are going to recognize blitz and break the route off, and the coverage here is ridiculous. You're conceding the 1st down.

To review...We don't have a defensive coordinator worth a damn...and our "Co" Coordinator in Bradley Dale Peveto is having his reputation tarnished by the garbage schemes and coverages that are being called in from the booth.

Mallory has brought a once-proud defense to its knees, humbling it against Top 10 competition this year to the tune of 51.5 points per game.

We've had 50 dropped on us, twice, on national television, twice, against Eastern Division opponents, twice...

Les Miles...You can't ride two horses with one ass, sir....It's time for a change. This defense has talent all over the field, and you are getting this team EMBARRASSED because you gave Doug Mallory a damn job he isn't qualified for.

This guy HAS NO PRIOR COORDINATION EXPERIENCE. He has NOTHING to show he warrants the title. He does have a playing career that included 4 years at Michigan, though...

This favor you've done for a fellow Michigan Man has hurt your program, this team, and its fans...and its time for you to TAKE IT BACK.

    FIRE MALLORY...YESTERDAY...

Other than a few editorial comments, I enjoyed your article. Other than the few flashes of brilliance by the usual personnel, I'm in shock. I only got to glimpse bits & pieces of the game, but the one thing that kept standing out, and never got any better, was the score.

From that which I've read in your article, as compared with what you offer immediately above, your analysis is spot on as usual. In one thing in particular I must emphatically agree: There are two things human beings should never do; 1) Never place two women in the same kitchen; 2) Never place two men together as co-coordinators. Pick one; work with that philosophy (complete buy-in by the entire staff) until it no longer works. Then, to which you've already eluded, replace that which doesn't work and move on.

Those 52 pts against that defense in front of the home crowd, that's got to be a bitter pill to swallow. Better luck next week.

I never say anthing to people after their team gets whooped, but you my friend are a special case. I've had you flagged since the first preseason polls came out and you started talking your typicla noise about how UGA was going to come to Baton Rouge and get the @sses handed to them. GOOD CALL! You can talk all you want about how the coaches made dumb calls, but you have the same defensive coordinator and staff you had back when you were talking all of your noise. The fact of the matter is UGA came into your house w/ a starting o-line that is ALL underclassmen and left there having stamped a W on that Bi-atch!
