Fanblogs.com: Mike Leach flies to Seattle to meet with UDub?

  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
    Where'd Leach go?

See? All these tail number spotters at airports would surely have seen the Husky plane touch down in Lubbock...

Who is that guy on the tail of the Alaska Airlines plane? Senator Ted Stevens?
  • OU_Ron · 1 year ago
WEA, that picture on the plane kinda reminds me of a pirate...
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
Like a Red Raider kind of pirate, Ron?
  • OU_Ron · 1 year ago
Yeah, I have a pic of the pirate, I'll send you tomorrow...

Dude...You guys have an e-mail friendship that I'm not aware of?

Why can't I be in the Circle Of E-Mail Trust?

    Is TE not cool enough?

    What gives?

I expected this at some point, I thought he would visit clemson if they wanted to interview him but I believe he is not going to go anywhere. Speculation is that he is visiting to up his contract extension with Myers. After all he is a lawyer, Leach knows that Myers will stretch his athletic budget to the max to keep Leach here. After all he deserves it. This is not the job Leach would leave for though. Tenn. job: sure. Miama job a few years back: YES. 0-12 WASH: No. But what do I know, I just hear things.
  • NMLSooner · 1 year ago
UW may be at the bottom now, but other than USC no Pac-10 has as much football tradition as the Huskies. They've won several national titles and had their fair share of Rose Bowl trips & wins. The rise of the Oregon teams might make recruiting tougher, but Leach could do it.
  • Tyler_Tech · 1 year ago
Leach does not give a dang about Wash. tradition. That will not be a factor for him if he decides to go there. Moon isn't exactly under center anymore either.
  • OU_Ron · 1 year ago
TT, if Tech would have given him a contract extension when he wanted it, this probably wouldn't be an issue...
  • Tyler_Tech · 1 year ago
That is not how it went down....
Myers and leach both agreed to wait untill after the season to renew his contract. Leach felt like he would get more money per year if he waited until after this season. Turns out he was right. Myers wanted to extend leach's conract but Leach said he wanted to stay at Tech (so he said) but would rather discuss his contract extension after the season. We will see what happens but if he gets an extension it will be alot better deal than he would have gotten in the middle of the season.

I'd love to see if he could pull it off, the UO / UW rivalry is not much to speak of these days. I don't really consider it to be a plum job though, perhaps he's interviewing with UW to squeeze more dough out of Tech.
  • TheMayor · 1 year ago
Also, just for the record, UW does have it's own plane they could have sent for him.
  • TheMayor · 1 year ago
From www.goducks.com, Oregon Offensive Coordinator Chip Kelly has been named Head Coach..."in waiting." Mike Bellotti will assume AD position when Pat Kilkenny steps down. Seems to be the popular move this year...
  • gatorhippy · 1 year ago
Pac is a good place for Leach...

    There's no defense there either...
  • TigerEducated · 1 year ago
Dude...I can't believe the U-Dub fellas wouldn't charter something and come to him...Flying-even 1st class-is crazy if he wanted to keep it incognito...

I also can't believe Mark Emmert-who kept the Nick Saban hiring unbelievably quiet while he was the Chancellor at LSU-kept things so out in the open here with U-Dub...

I like the choice for U-Dub, but I think Leach would be dumb to move away from such a fertile recruiting ground just as he's making in-roads...It's easy to find Texas schoolboy quarterback that's run the Spread since Junior High...But, it's harder to woo 'em out to Washington...
  • mosforty · 1 year ago
Could it have been Jim Mora he was meeting with?

UPDATE::::::::::: Did I tell you to trust in Alaska Airline passenger Dave Christophersen? Yeah... I did. Turns out that Leach did interview with Washington over the holiday weekend.

Texas Tech football coach Mike Leach was in Seattle on Tuesday to discuss with University of Washington officials that school's soon-vacant head coaching job, The Avalanche-Journal has confirmed.

"As of now, he hasn’t been offered the job," a source told The A-J on Tuesday night.

The same source said although Washington is 0-11 with one game left, if UW officials decide to zero in on Tech's coach, their potential to hire Leach away shouldn't be underestimated.

"I don't care if they are 0-11," the source said. "They're the state university; he would bring a national flair to the state, and he'd be able to recruit there at a level he's not able to recruit in Texas. He's still the third or fourth level of recruitment in Texas. At Washington, he'll be the first. All that's true, and a man of vision such as Mike Leach considers these things."

    ...

On Monday, Leach told The Associated Press that he "absolutely" wants to stay at Tech.

"I mean it's an interesting question," he said. "I've been there nine years, which is longer than most marriages or jobs, you know."

    ...

Myers said he would expect Leach to tell him if he's a legitimate candidate for another job.

"I think he would if he's serious about it," Myers said. "I think he would let me know. So I don't know. He wouldn’t have to tell me, but I haven't heard from anybody, the coaches or anybody else about that."

So... there you have. Mike Leach flew to Seattle and interviewed for the Washington job for one of two reasons:

    a) He's working over Leach to get a bigger contract than the $2.65 million he'll earn at Tech next season, or
    b) Mike Leach is seriously interested in the Huskies head coaching job.

At this point... I'm going with B and I think Leach and UW get something done within the next seven days. The Huskies have already interviewed Pat Hill and USC OC Steve Sarkisian, which means they want an offensive coach. Of the three, Leach has proven that he can sling the ball around, proven his ability as a head coach at the BCS level, and shown that he can recruit players who can win under his direction.

If Leach wants the job, it's his.

How would this effect Utah's Whittingham's chances as reason A for interviewing for the job?

The key to this whole process is a couple of things.......
    1) Tech will offer Leach around 2.4-2.65 million for a standard 5 year head coaching job conteact.
    2) I am really not sure the Huskies will offer him that much. I am not saying that they cannot (I know they are a really well endowed school), I am just saying I do not think they will.
    3) Around 2.5 million gets you alot further in Lubbock than it will in Seattle as far as cost of living goes.
    4) If he leaves it is because he wants a new "challenge". IMO I think even second and third recruits are alot better in texas than they are in Washington.
    5) You must all remember Leach's name is thrown in the hat just about every Dec. when any head coaching job opens up......
    6) He is not going to leave for Wash!
  • OU_Ron · 1 year ago
If you get 2.5 Mil a year, I really don't think Leach will concern himself with the cost of living in Lubbock vs Seattle............would you ???
  • lbu828694 · 1 year ago
I think cost of living at that point is a non-factor
  • Tyler_Tech · 1 year ago
It is not the factor, but it could be a factor.
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
I heard that Brian Kelly was offered this position and that he turned it down. I wonder what the reason was. Maybe this isn't a desirable job anymore for some reason? Maybe Coach Kelly likes betting on the NCAA basketball tournament.
  • FSU_Ben · 1 year ago
Actually for a lot of reasons this is a very good coaching job. Stop thinking "what have you done for me lately" plays into everyone's thinking. This is a flagship university that can recruit from surrounding states and countries with little competition. Yes Texas has better recruits but Tech competes with Texas, Texas A & M, Oklahoma and even has to compete for second stringers because they could start at Rice, SMU (look for this program to become competetive soon), Tulsa, UTEP, or North Texas. There are another half dozen FCS schools and Texas State will be transitioning soon. It would be wrong to assume that the Louisiana and Arkansas schools don't also poach recruits. Really the entire Big-12 as well as several national recruiting powers keep eyeballs on Texas high schools. Tech is probably maxed out.

Washington could return to greatness and the league is ripe for it as all the teams except USC are weaksauce. Washington couldn't recruit nationally as well as USC but I think you should be able to put together a pretty good football team just in thier backyard considering there is little to compete with. Oregon... Maybe.

I hear Tuberville's available to interview now...
  • Tom_Blogical · 1 year ago
    And so is Glen Mason!
  • Tom_Blogical · 1 year ago
I'm on the Leach is trying to leverage Tech for more money bandwagon.
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
Since Auburn, AL doesn't have a large commercial airport, I'll volunteer to pick Leach up at Hartsfield and taxi him down to the Plains for his interview there...
  • BigWarEagle · 1 year ago
Maybe Leach and Tuberville will just change places.
  • TheMayor · 1 year ago
    Tyler Tech,

Now I know why 2 of my HS girl friends left me to go to UW...as you stated:

"I am really not sure the Huskies will offer him that much. I am not saying that they cannot (I know they are a really well endowed school"

    wow.....haha

Remember me saying, "If Leach wants the job, it's his"?

Well, Leach doesn't want it. Fresno State's Pat Hill has also withdrawn his name.

I would presume that means USC OC Steve Sarkisian, Seahawks coach Jim Mora Jr, and... Tommy Tuberville are the leading candidates.
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
Give it to Mora. He got fired by the Atlanta Falcons because he coveted it...

No way Tubs goes that far from home...
  • Bama_Babe · 1 year ago
Steve Sarkisian will be named next head coach of Washington, so says ESPN.

    Uh, where to start?

First, the picture on the tail of Alaska Airline's planes is that of an indigeonous person (eskimo) of Alaska. Sidebar, but the logo on the Alaska Airline planes was modified from the more 'aggressive' look of an eskimo with an open mouthed snarl on its face because the natives felt that it was portraying a negative image. Please lay off the hallucinogenics when going close to any airports.

Second, Mr Condotta, keep your personnel straight. Gerald Myers is who Leach 'wants to work over', not Mike Leach. No wonder you're stuck blogging for the Seattle Times. The University Daily (Texas Tech's daily freebie paper) is more professional than you!

Third, I can just picture Mike Leach stepping off the plane back in Lubbock and dropping to his knees to kiss the dusty Llano Estacado after dealing with the dripping skies here in the 'Evergrey State' (a play on the actual nickname of the Evergreen State).

Fourth, congratulations UDub Huskies on your perfect season! It's wonderful how you struggled mightly to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory every game this season and succeeded! You are truly the Detroit Lions of the the Pac USC and the supporting cast of 9.
