I'm surprised football teams, such as CA, Clemson, NC St (for examples) don't put the entire head of the logo on the helmet. You see it in hockey all the time. The goalie's entire mask is the visage of something intimidating.
Imagine Cal's helmet depicting the entire head of a Grizzly Bear, where the opening of the helmet represents its jaws. Teeth could be painted on the face masks. Would that not be awesome?
Teams like Clemson could do the same thing with a Tiger; FL & GA could do the same thing with an Alligator & Bulldog respectively; UConn & WA could do with their respective Huskies. The possibilities are endless. Ahem, remember; you heard it here 1st.

As an alum I hate these new uniforms. They are ugly as sin. Can't quite figure out what it is exactly. Pretty sure it's the overly wide gay looking stripe running down the helmet. I wish we would switch back to these or some sort of a spin off. http://files3.fluxstatic.com/000640E1000EACE000...

Hey non hippie...I spent a summer session taking a class at South Hall...fun place but it got sickening after a few months.
Anyway, I don't care for the new uniform or the one that you linked to personally. I really liked the ones they've had the past few years. I don't understand why they see a need to change.

Actually, there used to be this Order of the Arrow lodge, 304 Chumash, out of San Louis Obispo. The last patch they put out before they merged had an absolutely awesome bear on it; by far, one of my favorites. Cal might consider using it.

1Tomcat, You are right. You want a aggressive looking logo. California secondary logo, the bear is passive in my opinion. Yes, I have seen SMU new helmet and new uniforms. You all probably know what they look like! The Pony Express days of Eric Dickerson & Craig James have returned. They will have a choice of RED OR BLUE for home games. I personally like the red. I am disappointed no red pants. They new to co-ordinate! You have to co-ordinate!

New Head Coach June Jones New coaching staff New football stadium New training & weight facilities New Helments & uniforms The complete support from management Heritage and Tradition Location-large Metro area-Dallas First game is on ESPN at Rice in Houston Looks like SMU got everything going on and can put the old stuff behind them now Its no wonder coach Jones went SMU----watch the complete turnaround this season

Different..... which isn't happening too much these days with new uniform designs since most are looking the same, but with different colors. I would like to see a bear maybe like on the state flag of CA.

I can answer the third question. Blue is a way of paying homage to the Yale / Cal connections and gold is for the California being the Golden State. I like the idea of a California Grizzly bear on the helmets. but the usage of the CAL script is simple and elegant. There was a time when there was a bear claw with the script Cal in the center.

Forget a Cal script and a bear paw print...put the whole grizzly bear on the helmet. Not part, not some, not half BUT ALL the bear on it!

I like the idea of it just being CAL because it distinguishes it from UCLA which was originally known as University of California, Southern Branch. Cal puts a grizzly on the helmet, UCLA puts a bear on the helmet. Simple is good. Who do you think Cal is? Oregon?

I wonder why California isn't spelled out on the helmets? Why not put a Grizzly Bear on the helmets? Why blue and gold as their colors? Why ask why...Bud Dry!

People like Dan are the reason people like Nike can make so much money off the idiot public. Is he kidding? The more combinations the better? What an affront to anyone with good sense. These uniforms look atrocious in any combination, and the fact that their uniforms from last season looked so good makes this worse. The Evil Empire of Nike strikes again. They just couldn't leave well enough alone. Dan and the rest of the lemmings can follow these right off the cliff.

Bobby you are alright with me. Love this post. You are good people in my book. Maybe Oregon can put orange in their color scheme you know to represent the duck bill and they can have orange jerseys and orange pants. Now they can have 25, 25 possible color combinations, ha, ha, ha, ha. They had mention adding "chrome". Now you can have 36, 36 possible color combinations. 36...ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.

Lennie Collins... There is no such thing as too many uniform combinations. The more combos, the better. I love when Oregon never really wears the same thing twice. Cal can do the same ( although I agree with you that the Blue jersey looks best with the yellow pants).
Overall, This may be one of the best uniform changes in recent history. This is truly a unique design specially made for Cal.

Oregon has to many jerseys/pants combinations. Green, Yellow, Black, and white. That's a total of 16 different combinations! they are ugly on top of that!

One more uniform note that I'm trying to track down.... SMU will be sporting some awesome new uniforms this season and return to the white shell helmets of the Pony Express glory days.

I have said in the past that I am not a fan of the white helmet BUT Southern Methodist white helmets I like. I hope they keep the red jerseys and have red pants ta go with da white jerseys so they can co-ordinate. You have to co-ordinate! Co-ordinate!

The helmet project has the updated helmet for SMU.
The one the helmet project has is the re-hash from a couple years ago. I understand that it will not be a verbatim version of the 90s helmets.

OU Ron...they are going to have NINE possible different combinations! At some point they will co-ordinate. I just hope they don't wear all blue, all gold, or all white. I personally like the blue jersey and gold pants for home games and the white jersey and blue pants for away games. Look out Oregon...you have some fashion competition. NINE is way too many!
