Why not cut about 75% of the bowl games on the grounds that no one cares?

huge notre dame fan and man i hope your right! we will probably end the year 7-5 with a win vs Syracuse and a loss to usc. i've never heard of a 7-5 team going to a pretty high ranked bowl like that so im not 100% sure but you do make great points in your blog. if they dont end up going, they'll probably be in the El Paso Bowl or some early December, nobody bowl. I am very disappointed with Charlie Weis, he hasnt beaten a team with a winning record since last years UCLA team! my final statement is that ND will win big over the U and lose big to FSU. i never thought i would say this but, COME ON CANES!

  • FSU_fan · 1 year ago
I love your faith in FSU but I don't necessarily share it. The Canes you want so badly are shaping up into a very decent team, probably a lot better than the Canes team FSU beat earlier in the year.
  • Ramblin' Gator · 1 year ago
Assuming that Kevin's forecast is correct...

Merry effing Festivus, Notre Dame. Once again, you have been treated better than you deserve.

Between FSU and Miami, the Gator Bowl should invite FSU if they want a sellout. FSU has a larger and more mobile fanbase than Miami.
  • 1Tomcat · 1 year ago
Ya RG I think they have 1 win over a team with a winning record this season.
I'd like to see them play a C-USA opponent like Houston or Rice. Or maybe Troy from Sun Belt
Too bad its gonna be a ACC team
If they face anybody from the top 25 it will be an embarassment
How many years of ND is rebuilding ?
triva question- how many years since the Irish won a Bowl?
  • USC1801 · 1 year ago
I believe NDame has lost the last 9 bowl games but the trivia question of when they last won a bowl game alludes me.

What a catch, Gator Bowl reps!! A team that has lost the last nine times and would lose again. Now that's what is called real smart marketing. Short-term gains at best.

"...FSU has a larger and more mobile fanbase than Miami...."

True, but....Notre Dame v. Miami--how could you turn that down? Notre Dame will fill the stadium, so you needn't worry about attendance.....and the combo would light up the ratings
    nicely...

On that note: "...Once again, you [ND] have been treated better than you deserve..."

Nonsense. If the Gator Bowl with Notre Dame fails to sell out...if the GB/ND fails to move product--you'd be right. Until that happens, you can't say that, without betraying complete ignorance about the relationship between "deserve" and "bowls".

Does a 1 loss team that fails to make a bowl profitable "deserve" to be in a bowl?

...hell no...not if it's on your nickel. Too many of those, and whatever bowl it is, would no longer be.

    GO GATORS!!
  • Ramblin' Gator · 1 year ago
I'll go along with your assertion about ND/Miami, TG, but I have to disagree on your definition of "deserve" with respect to bowl invitations. By your definition, deserving the invitation is more about selling the game out than record on the field. If that's the case, ND should just go to the BCSCG every year. In fact, there's no need at all to invite an opponent to play them since ND can sell out the game by themselves. In fact, let's just sell the tickets to ND fans and crown them national champs every year! Why bother playing the games?

You can call me naive - and maybe I am - but ND has not yet demonstrated that they deserve this bowl invitation, The timing of this news alone suggests how desperate the Gator Bowl is to put butts in seats and they are showing little or no concern for the quality of play on the field.
  • TampaGator · 1 year ago
    RG.

One huge problem with my Miami scenario: they're going to be the ACC champs--especially after they stomp GT this weekend--so they won't be playing in the GB...

Hell, it's a Notre Dame thread--great place to pick a fight, right!

j/k...Good points, Maybe I came on a little strong on the money side--that was to make a point. For most bowls, there has to be a balance between product on the field, and ability to move product. Frankly, the lesser the bowl, the more weight goes to the latter, and vice/versa: the higher/more prestigious the bowl, the more weight on the former. Hence it stands to reason that the Gator Bowl being a lesser bowl, would focus on profitability.

    GO GATORS!!

Notre Dame probably would be a sellout by itself. If you want a better mix of fans pick FSU but the tickets will sell.
  • Tom_Blogical · 1 year ago
I'm sure Notre Dame's opponent will be overwhelmed with their "Win the Gator Bowl without Effort" card. Merry Christmas, Notre Dame opponent!
  • Kevin @ Fanblogs · 1 year ago
It may be viewed as a gift for Notre Dame -- a better payout than a 7-5 team deserves -- but it might be **more** of a gift for FSU... who is likely to finish the season as the ACC's #5 and yet capture the ACC #3 slot. Ho! Ho! Ho!
  • Tom_Blogical · 1 year ago
I'll enjoy watching FSU, or any other team for that matter, beat Notre Dame to a pulp. It'll be a Christmas gift for me, too! Ho! HO! HO!

I'll be more excited to watch that game than Ralphie was when he got "Ole Blue" for Christmas!
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
The slots are always the selection of the bowl, unless you are wanting to take a 6-6 team over a 7 win team.

Except for some bowls and conference champions, bowls are not locked into actual conference standings.

Unless the Big East has another bowl that picks first after the BCS I think your projection is dead on.
  • Kevin @ Fanblogs · 1 year ago
    I'm telling ya... it's a stone cold lock. :-)
  • Zac · 1 year ago
Shoot! (That's "$hit" with 2-"O's".) If ND finishes w/7 wins, I'd be surprised if a BCS bowl didn't take em.

Hasn't Notre Dame already lost to 1/2 of the ACC teams this year already?
  • Wardboy3 · 1 year ago
Just two...North Carolina & Boston College
  • deathvalley56 · 1 year ago
Seems like it; and they almost got beaten by Navy this past weekend after being ahead 27-7 with just a couple of minutes left in the game. Navy recovered 2 on-sides kicks; and they almost pulled it out. I surely wish they would have won, for sure (For Navy to beat Notre Dame, that is). Final score was 27-21!!!

We are soooooooooooo sorry, Mr/Ms NDame fan. Perhaps posting your fight song will encourage you to come back and visit us:

"Cheer, cheer for old Notre Dame,
Wake up the deadbeats cheering her name,
Send a hollow cheer, "let's fight"
Shake down the Gator Bowl tonight!

Old Notre Dame has a lot of gall,
While her loyal sons are marching
    Anywhere but victory."

Remember the good old days, just the Rose, Cotton, Orange and Sugar Bowls. Bowls don't mean anything now, half of the teams in the country make them now with a barely winning record.
  • deathvalley56 · 1 year ago
Yeah, I remember them; and for the most part, they have gotten pretty with the exception of the Sugar Bowl, and sometimes the Orange Bowl. But, these 4 bowls used to be THE BOWL GAMES ....... for sure, for sure.
  • shiguy · 1 year ago
Awesome so the Big East is going to get shafted again out of the second largest bowl game they have. And i know that the Sun bowl is against a Pac 10 team but seriously if you honestly try to tell me that the Sun bowl has all the luster of the Gator bowl i will laugh at you. There isn't even a pull for the fans. You could be going to Jacksonville one of the nicest places to go to, or you could essentially go to a stadium that is as far in the a*scrack of america as possible with mexico 1000 feet away. Ya not so much. And this isn't against going out west. I used to live out there and was one of the people excited when WVU went to the Fiesta bowl just because I knew Phoenix would be fun. But El Paso?

This stings even more by the fact that the B12 took the bowl game last year, now ND, next year the B12 will probably take again. It's bullshit that ND is considered part of the BE for these bowl game when they don't even play the teams in the conference. With a few exceptions. I give them credit for Pitt but why do they refuse to play WVU?

God I hope Syracuse pulls off the upset of their year. Go Fighting Orangemen! (screw political correctness! damn girls getting their panties in a bunch! for those who don't know that's what their name was before the mighty PC bandwagon stepped in.)
  • Zac · 1 year ago
"God I hope Syracuse pulls off the upset..."

Done, my friend, not that it'll make a darn bit-o-difference.
  • Chris · 1 year ago
If the Big East is getting shafted, they only have themselves to blame for allowing Notre Dame to be linked with their football selections even though the Irish refuse to join the BE for football.

As for Miami or Florida State being the opponent for Notre Dame, how wise is that? Just read this morning that this past weekends nationally televised game on ABC between FSU and Boston College drew a whopping 4.5M viewers. That down almost 5.5M for the 10M average ABC had been getting for Saturday night football. FSU played a "home" game at the Gator Bowl against Colorado earlier this year and if you think the stadium has been empty for the ACC championship game, there was almost 40,000 more empty seats in Jacksonville to watch the Noles play in September than the "Cocktail Party" between Georgia and Florida.

And do we really think Miami is going to bring butts and eyeballs to the seats and screen for a 7-5 unranked Notre Dame contest?

Actually, and this is blasphemous as a UVA season ticket holder to say, but the Gator Bowl would do much better with Virginia Tech and Notre Dame which would probably sellout and draw a higher TV rating. But the Peach has first dips on the first non BCS ACC team and they will likely scoop up the Hokies.
  • TampaGator · 1 year ago
I thought FSU-CU sold out. Wow. I'd have to see some confirmation on that attendance to accept it.

As for Miami....I disagree...that would be a ratings bonanza.

    GO GATORS!!
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
I called BS on that statement at first, too, but I just looked up the box score: attendance--46,716. Wow!
  • TampaGator · 1 year ago
    Doh!

Thanks for the confirmation....think I'll promplty circulate this among some feller Gators to bait some 'noles with... I guess I shouldn't be too surprised though; a client recently offered me several GOOD FSU tix for a home game--pkg included; free of charge. I couldn't move them. 10+ calls to FSU "fans", and nothing... Didn't ask for a cent; FREE! Gratis! No charge! Nothing...and when I finally did get a taker--he called back to decline. Said he has a softball game that night, or something...the tix just sat there in a drawer...

I thought it was just a fluke...

    ...hmmmmmm....

    GO GATORS!!
  • Wardboy3 · 1 year ago
I was at the FSU Col game & even though it was only 47k there it was approx 40k FSU. So we had 40k show up for a game against Colorado. Now how many would show up for a game vs ND? And how many ND fans would show? I am sure you could easily get enough to sell out.
  • shiguy · 1 year ago
Actually no the BE didn't let ND in on their contracts, the bowl committees did. ND said "hey we're not in a conference we want some guaranteed bowls too!" and the bowl committees undid their respective belts and bent over.
  • TampaGator · 1 year ago
The fly by ND fan above had it all wrong; ND wouldn't stand a chance against Miami. FSU has a propensity for self-destructing; they're simply not a lock on anything anymore. Not saying they'd lose, just saying you can't make any judgments by looking at the rosters and/or the records.

Miami on the other hand, has become much more consistent. What's more, Notre Dame's offense performs decently against pasny d's--not against good d's; Miami's D would shut their O down completely....and on the other side of the ball: a HS offense could score at will againd ND's defense. Robert Marve may not be Graham Harrel, but he's good enough to light that D up.

    GO GATORS!!
  • FSU_fan · 1 year ago
Now this I can agree with. We seem to only stand up for big games against big competetion. Can't get these kids up for BC & Wake. This is coaching issues and motivation issues judging from the fact we blow those teams away in sheer talent. I guess we can just keep being mediocre until that is all we can recruit.
  • 4cornerz · 1 year ago
It's all about the money. Shame on the Big East for allowing this to happen. I would choose ND with a 6-5 or 7-5 or 6-6 record over a Uconn or CU or WVA or Pitt
  • FSU_fan · 1 year ago
WVU is the most desireable property in the big east with Pitt and Syracuse having potential with a package of good years. USF still has a way to come although I would rather watch them play than any other big east team. The entire lot of them though are second tier and third tier teams (with only those 4 and rutgers having any real potential fanbase building). Cincinatti is garbage, who would ever want to see this crapfest team in a top or mid tier bowl is beyond me but the potential is there... Uconn... never gonna be a top tier team. Ever. Louisville to me will always be C-USA garbage who made thier name beating FSU and aside from an ever so thrilling orange bowl game against Wake is a big failure.

I have hard feelings about the big east though and most of it stems from being 8 teams that range from so-so to so trashy that get an automatic BCS bid. If they had 12 teams and a championship game I'm sure I would have a different outlook. Memphis sure looks like a good fit if you dump seton hall, marquette, notre dame, georgetown, villanova etc. or perhaps encourage basketball only schools to transition to FBS such as Villanova and Georgetown (Georgetown has a long football history that includes trips to the Sun bowl and Orange bowl, yeah they suck now at FCS but look at duke, stanford, wake, rice etc.). Aside from that expanding with whoever looks best out of the MAC which seems to change often or picking up teams that offer new television markets (Central Michigan is all I can think of that could maybe compete enough and is sort of close). The two basketball schools I mentioned both are market expansions as well Maryland and PA. Conference could lobby to the respective state to help pay for facilities, is that unheard of? I know they are private schools. Ah well I am seriously digressing.
  • 4cornerz · 1 year ago
I some what agree with you, since gas prices are going down, screw geographics, if I was the new commish I would go after UCF, SMU, TCU and Houston.
  • FSU_fan · 1 year ago
Ok for some reason I thought PA was a market expansion. Must be because pitt is so entirely unmemorable for the last decade or so.
  • shiguy · 1 year ago
Or they could tell Joe Pa to stop being such a whiny b*tch and join the conference which actually houses 3 of Penn St.'s most historical rivalries (Pitt, WVU, Syracuse). Instead of playing in a conference that for the most part considers themselves the big 10 plus that other team way out east. Sadly though, this isn't the year to petition to them and it's unlikely they would ever do such a thing. but I have even talked to Alumni from Penn St. who have even commented that joining the big ten may have been nice publicity but they hate that they really have no rivals anymore Michigan St. is as much a rival to them as Baylor is to Colorado. They're in the same conference, and that's about it.
  • FSU_fan · 1 year ago
Actually that is an excellent idea that the big east has considered. Penn State snubbed them though. I would think they would jump at the opprotunity to compete every year for a BCS bowl although they have done well as of late.

good idea, but won't happen for a couple of reasons: 1) SYRACUSE 24 - Notre Dame 23. 2) it is likely USC will whip ND's ASS in so-cal, which makes ND 6-6. Bowl Eligible yes, but would ND even accept a bowl bid at 6-6? unlikely. assuming one is even offered. see ya charlie - it is time to go....

Gator Bowl? Gator Bowl? Who said anything about the Irish going to the Gator Bowl?

Too bad there is not a Lemon Bowl. Or, Irish Fans, it's too bad there is not a lemon law where you can turn back in a coaching hire that has gone bust!

Wow ND is really really bad. I feel sorry for all of the catholics out there that will have to root on a true football school like BC in the bowl season. ND has the atheletes, must be the coaching. Poor Charlie. Just like the majority of the pro assistance that try the college game......Just doesnt work. Bill Callahan NU for example. The Gator Bowl is out..It will go to the Cornhuskers. The Sun Bowl is out. Notre dame will get a bowl bid somewhere with its 6 wins but they should decline. They are not worthy. MAN THEY ARE BAD WOW
