Fanblogs.com: OJ Mayo & Tim Floyd: Trojan Horses?

  • fosterkeats · 6 months ago
I'll bet ANYONE in here $1,000 that nothing comes out of this AT ALL...

The NCAA will barely slap Southern Cal on the wrist b/c they are the darlings of LA and the 2nd largest market in the country. They would take a BIg financial hit if anything happened to the Trojan athletic teams...

Look at what never happened with Ohio St and Maurice Clarett & Jim O'Brien and all the Russians they paid to play in Columbus...

Alabama was "staring down the barrel of a gun"(according to ultimate douche bag Thomas Yeager) for what people OUTSIDE of the athletic program did, but if the NCAA doesn't slam USC for a coach paying for a player, then I quit...

Rick Majerus was slapped on the wrist for buying a high school kid a turkey sandwich in an airport, utterly ridiculous, but Tim Floyd will be protected???

Is Notre Dame the biggest market?
  • The_Observer · 6 months ago
I think he meant geographical region, i.e. Los Angeles.

Notre Dame has a huge fanbase (maybe the largest), but they are spread throughout the entire country.
  • Cobia · 6 months ago
Well you has the largest fanbase?
  • The_Observer · 6 months ago
    Huh?
  • Cobia · 6 months ago
Sorry. Who has the largest fanbase?
  • TampaGator · 6 months ago
    Cobia:

Notre Dame does. That's how they're able to maintain the NBC contract, and how they command so much clout within the BCS.

Notre Dame is really the only school in the country that has a truly national following. Many schools have a quasi-national following, in that they have fans all over the country--e.g.--UGA, Bama, UF, (had to throw us in there!), Texas, Michigan, Ohio St, SoCal, OU, Nebraska, Penn St., among others--but most of the fans of those schools that aren't near the geographical base of thier repsective schools, have ties to the namesake regions, or the schools themselves.

Only Notre Dame boasts a national fan base comprised primarily of fans with no direct ties to Indiana (let alone South Bend), or to the school.

Their primary base is the Catholic following (60+ million cats in US)--with only Boston Col. to compete with; add to that the fact that New York and Chicago both have huge ND followings--more fans than any other school in those respective cities--add to all that, the Irish nickname, and so many Irish descended Americans having allegiance to ND (often times not primary, but at least sympathetic to ND)...and you can easily see why.

...and that, b/t/w, is why Notre Dame matters to cfb (even when they suck).

    GO GATORS!!

Great Post TampaGator. It really put things in perspective.
  • Zac · 6 months ago
Actually, TG, there are three other schools. But, given we're talking Air Force, Army, & Navy, it's a little like the apples & oranges syndrome. The Academy's don't get near the recruiting advantages that ND does, but easily have a comparable fan base. It's just that, year after year, most academy fans don't have as much to cheer about as ND.

I'm gonna take the Boy Scout approach and not offer to gamble money with you Fos-Ke. I think SoCal gonna have take it up the wazoo on this one. if the allegation is proven.

I just noticed the "Sort by" option at the top of the comments. Has that always been there (since Disus anyways)?
  • Clemson_Joe · 6 months ago
I've never noticed it until reading your post. So, I tried using it, and I still prefer my "Ctrl + f" method.

Ctrl + f will pop up a search field in the bottom of your browser, and you can type in word for word what you're looking for. So, I can use the name of the poster, or for this one, "top of the comments", and it will find it before I finish typing.

Interesting find though. It may help some sort through the 100+ comment long threads a little better. Either way, although it took some getting used to, this system is better than the old one.

i'm hearing from inside sources that Alabama will face:
    - 2 scholarship losses
    - 2 years probation

for a freaking "textbook scandal" where players took free books they received legally with their scholarship, and sold them at a bookstore.

there's no postseason ban or anything REALLY serious, but still.

I can't believe other schools get away with stuff like this.
Does the NCAA have something against Alabama?

USC paying players is like the next flu/virus pandemic, it makes headlines every year, but nothing ever seems to come of it.
  • Clemson_Joe · 6 months ago
"Does the NCAA have something against Alabama?

Yes. You would call it a "textbook scandal".
  • Zac · 6 months ago
Shoot, look at the uproar some schools have found themselves in over a few bucks cab fare, a T-Shirt, baseball cap, or fountain pen. Last I heard, if your school's football field has a "tunnel", coaches can't even let prospective recruits run out from under it.

So, in retrospect, you're right. This'll get white-washed.

But, seriously, folks (confession or no confession) this currently stands as alleged. Let's see what really develops.
  • "BC" · 6 months ago
    the NCAA is absolutely ridiculous.

next thing ya know programs will be getting nailed to the wall for handing out free lemon-lime gatorade to players on the sidelines.
  • TigerEducated · 6 months ago
They are not allowed to receive "something of value" as a result of their being a student athlete.

Getting a few thousand a year from selling those books back qualifies perfectly under that definition.
  • "BC" · 6 months ago
when have you ever gone to a bookstore to sell back your books for the semester and received over $1000?

i just recently did it. i came out with $162.
you must be buying the commemorative editions or something.
  • Gatorader · 6 months ago
I don't understand why someone would spend so much money on taking a class and then sell the book back for $30. Okay, I understand why an athlete would do it, but not a typical student.
  • TigerEducated · 6 months ago
I went and spent hundreds of dollars every semester...and I went Fall, intercession, spring, & summer, as well...

I spent easily over $1000 a year on books...

If you've got a Barnes & Noble bookstore, like LSU's, then you will get TOP DOLLAH for your buybacks...

But, let's leave that alone for a minute...

If they made a DIME off of it, then its an NCAA violation.

    Thanks for playing.

Should have sold them on Amazon, barely used always got top dollar.
  • The_Observer · 6 months ago
Unless your "inside source" is someone directly involved in the NCAA investigation, your guy is speculating.

It's funny because I have sources too and they are say it will be 2 schollys and probation, but my sources are no more reliable than...you.

Again, unless your source is from the NCAA, Nick Saban, Mal Moore or the UA President, then your guy is merely making an educated guess (and I am giving him a lot of credit when I say educated).
  • WarEagleFan · 6 months ago
Could his inside source be Jimmy Johns?

    Bleed:

Tell me your kidding, right? USC paying these players? Of course they do and so does everybody else. Who led the nation in recruiting last year? That's right - the team that paid the most money. Some folks just amaze me. Here we are watching the greatest money makin' venue in the gool ol' US of A - and many folks seem to be a little shocked when players take money. Or, should I say tell or get caught?

No doubt that Tim Floyd paid the money. He's been fired. That says it all. Why on earth would that moron pay only $1,000 bones to someone of OJ Mayo's caliber for only one year of basketball? He needed to be fired. He's dumb as a box of rocks. The Reggie Bush thing is completely different. Nobody at the University had any knowledge of Reggie's dirty dealings. Nevertheless, Bush's Hypesman should be forfited and games also, should it ever be proved that Bush took money from would-be agents. It is clear that the basketball program got caught with their hands-in-the-cookie jar. This will certainly not be swept under the carpet. You can expect major sanctions against the basketball program.

Totally off topic but my friend just got a text saying Tebow threw his shoulder out today and he is done for the season. I've searched all the sites and haven't seen anything. Just a bad rumor.....like the "don't go in WalMart" text that went around a couple of months ago??
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 6 months ago
Probably Shane Matthews talking out of the side of his mouth again...

IMHO, assuming there is proof (and I can't believe they won't be able to prove at least USC’s Boosters’ “Low Income Housing for Families and Friends” initiative, if true) and the NCAA does not hammer them, it is obvious USC enjoys an unfair advantage and any college that has been penalized for any infraction in any sport in the last decade or 2 should pursue an antitrust case against the NCAA.
  • You_can_call_me_Ray · 6 months ago
PC has returned USC to the top of the Pac 10 and a National Championship contender every year. However, just like what happened to Washington in the 90's, you cannot stay on top for too long before they start coming after you. If teams cannot beat you on the field, they try to beat you off the field.

These allegations by people of questionable character should not worry USC, but when the NCAA starts looking at you under the microscope, they will find something.

In Washington's case, one player accepted a loan from a non-booster with zero ties to the football program (a businessman from Idaho or Montana). This was considered a major violation and the player was immediately suspended from the team. However, when the NCAA investigated, they found 2 secondary violations and slapped the dreaded "lack of institutional control" label on the Athletic Department.

The NCAA took some scholarships away for 2 years as a penalty but that did not satisfy the Pac 10. The PAC 10 AD’s piled on with a much stiffer penalty. Non-eligible for bowls for 2 years and additional scholarships were taken away. Don James resigned out of protest and the rest is history.

So, USC should be more worried about Cal, Oregon, UCLA, OSU and the rest of the Pac 10 taking this opportunity to crush USC. If they can't beat you on the field, they will try to beat you off the field.

    IMHO,

    You can call me Ray.
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 6 months ago
Yes. If you can't beat them, arrange to have them beaten...

I agree. Or at the very least, pay their parents or offer them a job.

I'd like to see justice done, if they did it. From what I've read, it's likely they did.
