Fanblogs Open Conference Championship Thread
The NCAA will barely slap Southern Cal on the wrist b/c they are the darlings of LA and the 2nd largest market in the country. They would take a BIg financial hit if anything happened to the Trojan athletic teams...
Look at what never happened with Ohio St and Maurice Clarett & Jim O'Brien and all the Russians they paid to play in Columbus...
Alabama was "staring down the barrel of a gun"(according to ultimate douche bag Thomas Yeager) for what people OUTSIDE of the athletic program did, but if the NCAA doesn't slam USC for a coach paying for a player, then I quit...
Rick Majerus was slapped on the wrist for buying a high school kid a turkey sandwich in an airport, utterly ridiculous, but Tim Floyd will be protected???
Notre Dame has a huge fanbase (maybe the largest), but they are spread throughout the entire country.
Notre Dame does. That's how they're able to maintain the NBC contract, and how they command so much clout within the BCS.
Notre Dame is really the only school in the country that has a truly national following. Many schools have a quasi-national following, in that they have fans all over the country--e.g.--UGA, Bama, UF, (had to throw us in there!), Texas, Michigan, Ohio St, SoCal, OU, Nebraska, Penn St., among others--but most of the fans of those schools that aren't near the geographical base of thier repsective schools, have ties to the namesake regions, or the schools themselves.
Only Notre Dame boasts a national fan base comprised primarily of fans with no direct ties to Indiana (let alone South Bend), or to the school.
Their primary base is the Catholic following (60+ million cats in US)--with only Boston Col. to compete with; add to that the fact that New York and Chicago both have huge ND followings--more fans than any other school in those respective cities--add to all that, the Irish nickname, and so many Irish descended Americans having allegiance to ND (often times not primary, but at least sympathetic to ND)...and you can easily see why.
...and that, b/t/w, is why Notre Dame matters to cfb (even when they suck).
GO GATORS!!
Ctrl + f will pop up a search field in the bottom of your browser, and you can type in word for word what you're looking for. So, I can use the name of the poster, or for this one, "top of the comments", and it will find it before I finish typing.
Interesting find though. It may help some sort through the 100+ comment long threads a little better. Either way, although it took some getting used to, this system is better than the old one.
- 2 scholarship losses
- 2 years probation
for a freaking "textbook scandal" where players took free books they received legally with their scholarship, and sold them at a bookstore.
there's no postseason ban or anything REALLY serious, but still.
I can't believe other schools get away with stuff like this.
Does the NCAA have something against Alabama?
USC paying players is like the next flu/virus pandemic, it makes headlines every year, but nothing ever seems to come of it.
Yes. You would call it a "textbook scandal".
So, in retrospect, you're right. This'll get white-washed.
But, seriously, folks (confession or no confession) this currently stands as alleged. Let's see what really develops.
next thing ya know programs will be getting nailed to the wall for handing out free lemon-lime gatorade to players on the sidelines.
Getting a few thousand a year from selling those books back qualifies perfectly under that definition.
i just recently did it. i came out with $162.
you must be buying the commemorative editions or something.
I spent easily over $1000 a year on books...
If you've got a Barnes & Noble bookstore, like LSU's, then you will get TOP DOLLAH for your buybacks...
But, let's leave that alone for a minute...
If they made a DIME off of it, then its an NCAA violation.
Thanks for playing.
It's funny because I have sources too and they are say it will be 2 schollys and probation, but my sources are no more reliable than...you.
Again, unless your source is from the NCAA, Nick Saban, Mal Moore or the UA President, then your guy is merely making an educated guess (and I am giving him a lot of credit when I say educated).
Tell me your kidding, right? USC paying these players? Of course they do and so does everybody else. Who led the nation in recruiting last year? That's right - the team that paid the most money. Some folks just amaze me. Here we are watching the greatest money makin' venue in the gool ol' US of A - and many folks seem to be a little shocked when players take money. Or, should I say tell or get caught?
No doubt that Tim Floyd paid the money. He's been fired. That says it all. Why on earth would that moron pay only $1,000 bones to someone of OJ Mayo's caliber for only one year of basketball? He needed to be fired. He's dumb as a box of rocks. The Reggie Bush thing is completely different. Nobody at the University had any knowledge of Reggie's dirty dealings. Nevertheless, Bush's Hypesman should be forfited and games also, should it ever be proved that Bush took money from would-be agents. It is clear that the basketball program got caught with their hands-in-the-cookie jar. This will certainly not be swept under the carpet. You can expect major sanctions against the basketball program.
These allegations by people of questionable character should not worry USC, but when the NCAA starts looking at you under the microscope, they will find something.
In Washington's case, one player accepted a loan from a non-booster with zero ties to the football program (a businessman from Idaho or Montana). This was considered a major violation and the player was immediately suspended from the team. However, when the NCAA investigated, they found 2 secondary violations and slapped the dreaded "lack of institutional control" label on the Athletic Department.
The NCAA took some scholarships away for 2 years as a penalty but that did not satisfy the Pac 10. The PAC 10 AD’s piled on with a much stiffer penalty. Non-eligible for bowls for 2 years and additional scholarships were taken away. Don James resigned out of protest and the rest is history.
So, USC should be more worried about Cal, Oregon, UCLA, OSU and the rest of the Pac 10 taking this opportunity to crush USC. If they can't beat you on the field, they will try to beat you off the field.
IMHO,
You can call me Ray.
You can call me TE.
