Fanblogs.com: Pirates Planning to Pilfer the BCS?

  • shiguy · 1 year ago
actually it has been in discussion for quite some time that the most likely addition to the BE would be East Carolina. I would personally be totally for the move as it would make some of the teams in the conference stop scheduling so many joke teams with all the extra OOC dates available to schedule.
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
Most conferences have 8 conference games. Expansion would only cut one of the Big East's OOC dates.
  • shiguy · 1 year ago
true right now though all the schools in the BE only have 7 conference games. it would not cut that much into the OOC games as WVU and other schools in the BE play East Carolina fairly consistently already. plus some schools need to have one of those OOC dates against a better team. look at rutgers' OOC schedule from last year 2 AA schools HORRIBLE.
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
The difference is that losses to East Carolina would then be a conference loss and not sting in the rankings so much.
  • Zac · 1 year ago
That would be true if ECU were accepted as a respected program, such as WVU, S FL, or even Cinci has become. For the time being, were WVU to lose to ECU, while it would hurt WVU's national standing, it wouldn't impact their conference standing a bit. By winning the Big East, a BCS bowl is assured, despite the non-conference record.

Still, I would like to see the Big East offer ECU the invite to join. I think it's a good match for all concerned. In the mean time, I want my Mountaineers to win in Charlotte tomorrow.

    Its early Ben.... real early.

Utah has to prove itself on defense further before becoming a BCS buster. I doubt Frenso State and ECU will continue on this success. Utah has the best chance at a BCS buster this year.
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
Indeed next week is a huge test for East Carolina. I wanted to give them props before it may be too late.

Also I can say I was already on the bandwagon if they win.

Fresno State gets their turn the following week. They are not so new to this so I'm not going to make as much hype for them. Not unless they are still undefeated after playing Boise State.

I think you underestimate BYU's schedule. The winner of the Holy War has the best chance of a BCS bowl. That is November 22nd.

It looks like you guys are ready to crown this years Hawaii.
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
Hopefully a good team steps up.

I don't want another Hawaii. I want someone who can actually beat a top 15 team.

I would love to see ECU or UCF in the BE, but the real problem is, will ECU or UCF join non football BBall conference, b/c I can not see the BE adding another school for Basketball. I believe the BE is looking for a football only school, so if ECU or UCF joins that means ECU or UCF would have to join the A 10 for Basketball or another Basketball only conference.
  • jake · 1 year ago
The BE might consider dismissing a poor performance bball-only school like DePaul or Seton Hall to make room for a UCF or ECU. The BE is so stacked in bball that it really can afford to lose a little bit in hoops to gain a lot on the gridiron.
  • jake · 1 year ago
Currently, Utah has the highest winning percentage among non-BCS teams against BCS opponents.
  • Kevin @ Fanblogs · 1 year ago
    Backup for that stat??
  • jake · 1 year ago
It was mentioned in the Utah v. Michigan game by the commentary.
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
So far this season, or for all time?
  • jake · 1 year ago
I believe during the BCS system. It was mentioned by commentary during the Utah/UM game.
  • 1Tomcat · 1 year ago
Really ? my records indicate TCU does
  • jake · 1 year ago
I can't support my claim except from what I heard during the Utah/UM game. Maybe the commentary was wrong. Damn ABC!!!
  • OU_Ron · 1 year ago
Don't be mad at the network, that info probably came from the head of the MWC, while vacationing on cloud 9...
  • cdogg · 1 year ago
Let's not get too excited. They beat a team that is grossly overrated every pre season since Mike Vick left.
  • TampaGator · 1 year ago
    Jake:

I heard that too, though I believe what they said was that Utah has more wins (13) than any other non BCS team. I don't recall any mention of percentages (edited).

    GO GATORS!!
  • jake · 1 year ago
I'm glad to know that I wasn't hearing things. I do remember, for sure, them mentioning percentages though.
  • TampaGator · 1 year ago
I'll defer to you--I was just giv'n you some back up. I've got 3 rug rats running around the house--it's perpetual chaos--I'm lucky to hear a complete sentence when I'm watching TV. I just vaguely recall seeing a graphic with Utah, next to the number 13, at the top of a list, and some blurb about non-bcs v. bcs....

    GO GATORS!!
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
The stat was most wins against BCS teams this century.

    Utah 13
    Fresno Sate 12
    TCU & ??? 11

The other team was either from C-USA or the MAC.

    Ben:

I think the BE probably will invite ECU for the Charlotte market....and I think, regardless what happens with ECU/conferences, coach Skips town. He's got the predigree, now the signature win....just a matter of time before he gets poached. No matter for ECU--just like Tampa/USF and Orlando/UCF--the flame is lit; they're building up a steady following.

Bowling Green v. Pitt--a total crapshoot going in. No surprise at all when BG won, b/c Wanstache is a horrible coach...yet Pitt has talent. So could go either way, any given Sat'y.

    GO GATORS!!
  • 4cornerz · 1 year ago
If I am not mistaking the BE is looking for a football only school. If ECU goes to the BE for football then ECU Basketball will have to join a Basketball only conference, that would be tough for ECU. Those are the rules of the NCAA
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
I'm thinking more like Boise State when Petersen went to Colorado.
  • jake · 1 year ago
Another school to consider, additionally, is Villanova. There have been talks about moving them into the BE simply because it wouldn't disrupt the hoops balance AND they get the Philly market. Unless Temple has something to say about . . . hahaha.

Ok, Villanova lost by 27 points to WV but they put up 21! That either says something about V'Nova's 1AA offense or WV's defense. It will be interesting to see how a 1A opponent ECU fairs against WV next week.
  • shiguy · 1 year ago
I think it would be better to get ECU and drop one of the weaker BBall schools since ECU has shown potential consistently through the last few years. Then leave the possibility to pick up Villi if they continue to show promise in the future.
  • Diggs_the_Mountie · 1 year ago
I think ECU is a decent team no doubt....BCS worthy? I'm leaning towards no, but if they would do the unthinkable and go undefeated I think that they'd deserve not only a BCS game but a shot at the Title. However, that's only if another BCS team has 2 losses. I also think Skip Holtz will be coaching elsewhere at the end of this season. Don't be surprised to see him at either Syracuse or sPitt next season. I hear that the sPitt Administration isn't happy with Wannstedt's performance in the least and that he's on thin ice. Some people may challenge this thought due to Wannstaches recent contract extension but we all now how much a contract actually means? Right?;) Anyway just thought I'd pass that a-long.

Note: I don't think Wannstache will be "fired" by any means. It will play out more like a "resignation" which will be in turn laid out by the Admin as "you will resign".
  • Diggs_the_Mountie · 1 year ago
BTW, the "ACC" took the worst of the Conference losses this week....The upper echelon of the ACC lost . It was the bottom feeders of the BE that stumbled. No comparison there Ben....none at all. Please, find another tit to milk as this one has already been milked to death.

We still have Cincy vs. OU this week along with some other decent OOC games such as WVU vs. Auburn, WVU vs. Colorado, UCONN vs. Virginia, UConn vs. Baylor, Uconn vs. North Carolina, Louisville vs. K-State, sPitt vs. Iowa, and USF vs. Kansas which are all winnable games btw. On the other hand I've pretty much given up on sPitt and Syracuse for this season and until new Coaches are hired but they can definitely beat Iowa this year.

How you come up with your nail in the Coffin bit about the BE is beyond me though? Especially considering how well we've played as a Conference over the last 3 seasons (and Bowl games) after having to face all the adversity. The wretchid play of the ACC in BCS games since 2001 on the other hand speaks for itself. However, you fail to recognize that somehow? Maybe you should start thinking a little for yourself rather than riding other writers coat-tails? Just a thought....

If East Carolina upsets West Virginia who is left for the Big East?

USF? They could easily go down to UCF.

Who then from the Big East would even be in the top 25?
  • Diggs_the_Mountie · 1 year ago
If "ifs" and "buts" were candy and nuts then we'd all have a merry Christmas.
  • Regan · 1 year ago
South Florida is currently #17, but they wouldn't in the Top 25 if they lost to UCF.

West Virginia is #8; they wouldn't fall out of the Top 25 with a loss to ECU.

Then again, I was shocked when Clemson went from #9 to "Others Receiving Votes" last week. WVU at least has one win, so they'd stay in.

heheheh, if bullfrogs had wings, they wouldn't bump their butts every time they landed.
