Fanblogs Open Conference Championship Thread
Seriously, it is a breath of fresh air to see someone in football actually make a decision that reflects the intent of our educational system, and one that indicates a genuine desire to contribute to our society, not just his bank account.
Definitely a great story. I wish him the best as he's got some tough decisions to make. But I still side with the other guys on here who say go make your millions if it's there, pay off all the student loans, become debt free almost instantly, play your 3-5 years in the NFL then pursue the education when you're done.
One can be passed up for now (school) then gone back to. The other (NFL), in most cases, cant.
Nice story though.

What a great kid.
Now that being said, I think he should take the money, then go back to school after he retires from the NFL. He can retire before it takes a toll on his body, and go back to school and go into medicine later. He's got the discipline to follow it through. If John Frank (former OSU TE) can do it, so can Myron Rolle. I don't think there's anything wrong with trying to get the best of both worlds in this case, since the average career in the NFL is only about 3.5 years, according to the NFL Player's Association.
To play or not to play? To Rhode or not to Rhode? Those are the questions plaguing this young man. A man, who one way or another wants to go into medicine. We know he wants to go Rhode Scholar. He's giving up valuable playing time to interview, for crying out loud. So, the question remains, which is more important, saving lives, or saving the millions he could garner in the 1st 3 or so years he's in the NFL, provided he survives.
AND, there-in lies the answer. What if he doesn't make it? What if he makes it, and is injured in a game or in practice? What if he joins the NFL, and because of an injury he is unable to practice medicine, even if he's accepted to medical school after 2-3 years removed from academia. No, I think he's made his choice. If he's willing to leave a game in the name of academia, he's willing to forgo the chance at glory, and all that money, for a chance to save lives. Hmmm, I wonder if he and Tim Tebow are related...interesting. Thanks for the article TE. This one was refreshing indeed!
As a Horns fan, we have approx 100 student athelettes in the program, almost all of them doing the right thing, but we generally dont hear about all the good stuff these kids are doing, then 1 kid gets a DWI its on every channel and in every paper, bringing down the kid and the team.
Just recently with stranglers, assaults and loaded rifles being fired FSU has had its share of F-ups, glad to hear something positive. I say you gotta go for it the sky's the limit, you only have one chance in this world- go for the gusto, be all you can be. His parents ought to be pround and it sounds like this young man will be successful in his endevors.
It would literally take decades to make the kind of jack through medicine, or any other conventional route that academics would open up for him, that he could make in just a couple of seasons in the NFL. Steve Young and Cris Collinsworth and Brad Culpepper, to name just a few, had long and prolific NFL careers, then went and got their law degrees (Culpepper practices law here in TB area; the other 2 are FB analysts--but they have the option to practice law if they wanted to). Rolle wouldn't have to stick around for too long; just long enough to break 7 figs, then go Rhodes.
That's just being real.
...and the bottom line: anyone can do so much more good loaded ($$$), than not.
GO GATORS!!
Safeties rarely get drafted high and those with limited play making skills typically don't get drafted at all. As such I think a Rhodes Scholar is his hightest and best use and one heck of a program note for FSU. As a society we will be much better served with Myron studying abroad rather than studying "broads" here at home trying to hold on to a roster spot in the NFL.
Go Noles and thank God the ACC is so weak!
