Fanblogs.com: Putting the "student" back in Student Athlete: Myron Rolle of Florida State...

  • USC1801 · 1 year ago
Seems we touched on this theme in a recent thread titled "What are the college football graduation rates?" The highlight of that post was the devious yet subtle way GeauxTigers0107 turned it into a discussion on white lighting. Can he do it again???

Seriously, it is a breath of fresh air to see someone in football actually make a decision that reflects the intent of our educational system, and one that indicates a genuine desire to contribute to our society, not just his bank account.

I did get some killer shine down in Flawrida once...lol.

Definitely a great story. I wish him the best as he's got some tough decisions to make. But I still side with the other guys on here who say go make your millions if it's there, pay off all the student loans, become debt free almost instantly, play your 3-5 years in the NFL then pursue the education when you're done.

One can be passed up for now (school) then gone back to. The other (NFL), in most cases, cant.

    Nice story though.

You're right, TE, it is a great story. Thanks for taking the time to write this up, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Especially in light of FSU's recent and very public academic problems. If only Ray Small (from OSU) would follow in Myron Rolle's footsteps.

    What a great kid.

Now that being said, I think he should take the money, then go back to school after he retires from the NFL. He can retire before it takes a toll on his body, and go back to school and go into medicine later. He's got the discipline to follow it through. If John Frank (former OSU TE) can do it, so can Myron Rolle. I don't think there's anything wrong with trying to get the best of both worlds in this case, since the average career in the NFL is only about 3.5 years, according to the NFL Player's Association.

For those of you who can't get past athletes being muscle-bound bone-heads, TE eloquently introduces us to Myron Rolle. Who is this guy? He's a football player, of all things, from FSU, of all places. What's so great about him? He could be FSU's next Rhodes Scholar. He also could be one of the best Safety's in all of college football, let alone the ACC; one who could be making millions by playing on Sunday's, given he could be a lock for the draft.

To play or not to play? To Rhode or not to Rhode? Those are the questions plaguing this young man. A man, who one way or another wants to go into medicine. We know he wants to go Rhode Scholar. He's giving up valuable playing time to interview, for crying out loud. So, the question remains, which is more important, saving lives, or saving the millions he could garner in the 1st 3 or so years he's in the NFL, provided he survives.

AND, there-in lies the answer. What if he doesn't make it? What if he makes it, and is injured in a game or in practice? What if he joins the NFL, and because of an injury he is unable to practice medicine, even if he's accepted to medical school after 2-3 years removed from academia. No, I think he's made his choice. If he's willing to leave a game in the name of academia, he's willing to forgo the chance at glory, and all that money, for a chance to save lives. Hmmm, I wonder if he and Tim Tebow are related...interesting. Thanks for the article TE. This one was refreshing indeed!

TE,Tom, Zac Its about time we hear something positive , seems like negativity sells and a few bad ones are what the public usually hears about. Sounds like this kid has his sh=t together.
As a Horns fan, we have approx 100 student athelettes in the program, almost all of them doing the right thing, but we generally dont hear about all the good stuff these kids are doing, then 1 kid gets a DWI its on every channel and in every paper, bringing down the kid and the team.
Just recently with stranglers, assaults and loaded rifles being fired FSU has had its share of F-ups, glad to hear something positive. I say you gotta go for it the sky's the limit, you only have one chance in this world- go for the gusto, be all you can be. His parents ought to be pround and it sounds like this young man will be successful in his endevors.

Agreed, TC. I personally would like to read more about the accomplishments of young men like this (I have thus far enjoyed the articles and commentaries involving Tim Tebow, for example.), than discuss those who have squandered once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. As I have already said, "...refreshing indeed!"

i think he should spend a few years in the NFL. No students loans to pay off that way. He is an inspiration, all student athletes should aspire to such lofty standards.

He should make his jack in the NFL while he can. He can capitialize on the Rhodes scholly in a couple of years, with plenty of bread in the basket already.

It would literally take decades to make the kind of jack through medicine, or any other conventional route that academics would open up for him, that he could make in just a couple of seasons in the NFL. Steve Young and Cris Collinsworth and Brad Culpepper, to name just a few, had long and prolific NFL careers, then went and got their law degrees (Culpepper practices law here in TB area; the other 2 are FB analysts--but they have the option to practice law if they wanted to). Rolle wouldn't have to stick around for too long; just long enough to break 7 figs, then go Rhodes.

    That's just being real.

...and the bottom line: anyone can do so much more good loaded ($$$), than not.

    GO GATORS!!

You can't defer the Rhodes Scholarship--so if he gets it, he will go to Oxford. The fact that he is interviewing now means that he has chosen Rhodes over NFL. In my opinion he would be 100% crazy to pass up that opportunity. There are gyms in England to help him to stay in shape for a possible NFL try when he returns.

It is obvious that none of you have seen a lot of FSU football for the past 2 1/2 years and I can't blame you. If you had been forced to watch as an alumnus like myself (former letterman as a safety as well) I can assure you that Myron's greatest contribution will be in academics and eventually in the field of medicine. He is apparently a great kid but his football talents are minimal(I might have just described myself at his age). His extended playing time is a function of the talent not being fully in place at FSU along with his brain which allows him to call coverages and make sure everyone is positioned properly. Once the ball is snapped his value to the club drops considerably.

Safeties rarely get drafted high and those with limited play making skills typically don't get drafted at all. As such I think a Rhodes Scholar is his hightest and best use and one heck of a program note for FSU. As a society we will be much better served with Myron studying abroad rather than studying "broads" here at home trying to hold on to a roster spot in the NFL.

Go Noles and thank God the ACC is so weak!
