  • jake · 1 year ago
Agreed. Iowa is not as prestigious as some may think.
  • Marko · 1 year ago
I agree. Clemsom and Auburn above Iowa, but VTech should be lower.

This guy is a Big 10/Big 12 Homer... how is Iowa, Nebraska, or Colorado ahead of Auburn/Clemson/Virginia Tech?

These hack writers need to stop making up dumb Polls or Top 10 Lists, they're always the same, they're always stale, and they suck...
  • NMLSooner · 1 year ago
I think USC would be tops. Private school (right?) so you don't have to answer annoying questions about your billion dollar contract. You are The Football Team of Los Angeles. Kids from all over the country want to play there. You could recruit a top twenty team in a twenty mile radius. Fan base is not insane about every thing in and out of the football program. On the negative side you would have to live in the sewage dump known as L.A.
  • Cougar_Fan · 1 year ago
I would move USC up, and Nebraska down. And how many years of Notre Dame underachieving will it take before they start to fall on the list?
  • Ernie · 1 year ago
16, 18, 19, and 20??? Are you from the Big Ten? How in the blazes can you rank those plodding programs ahead of LSU, Auburn, Clemson, and Georgia Tech? Geez......
  • Porcine · 1 year ago
A&M, Colorado, Big 10? A&M has Kyle Field and oil money, but we still beat them. i guess Colorado has beer money.
  • 1Tomcat · 1 year ago
Kevin Its a double edge sword, because the best can also be the worst.
Texas, At these programs the expectations are very high
At Texas for example an 11-2 season is a disappointing season and 9-4 is a down year
Mack Brown said that the best thing about the job is 20 million football fans and the worst thing is 20 million football fans
  • Lennie Collins · 1 year ago
I can't wait to see/hear the reaction when Texas finish at .500 or below this year.
  • Zac · 1 year ago
Tomcat, you have made the best point here yet. Of the Top-25 schools listed, few would be considered undesirable stops in a coach's career. That having been said, what's the criteria? What makes each of these a Top-25 coaching position. Is it salary, benefits, recruiting, monetary support from boosters, fans, the school, fan loyalty, the facilities, the history & tradition, the name? Why are these the Top-25?

For example, ND: That school's President, Board of Directors/Governors, and a few local key members of the Catholic Church are pretty tough when it comes to laying out the expectations of their HC.

Bama: Deep South, Yankee's need not apply. If you're the optimistic type who feels such old, ingrained feelings are a thing of the past, guess again. Some habits really do die hard. Not only does the school apply a great deal of pressure, regarding the team's success, but social pressure as well. Boosters and fans are even worse. The job requirements and expectations go way beyond winning ball games at AL.

Miami: Like FL & FSU, they're in a recruiting hot-bed, and given their past history, there are plenty of stellar players to go around. Recently, however, things have not been so glorious. Not to mention, the neighborhood surrounding the campus is like a demilitarized zone, the facilities for the team are almost as bad as Hawaii's, and they no longer have a stadium to call home.

MI, OSU, FL, FSU, Miami, UCLA, LSU: If you don't like heavy traffic or big city driving, none of these are the place for you.

If I were given a choice of schools at which to coach, it would be ECU, IA, IA St, Penn St, TN, VA Tech. Places like this where life's a little more laid back; the fans and media are a little more forgiving; the pay and benefits are decent, and you can still do more with less year-after -year.
  • Kevin @ Fanblogs · 1 year ago
MI, OSU, FL, FSU, Miami, UCLA, LSU: If you don't like heavy traffic or big city driving, none of these are the place for you.

With the exception of LA, I wouldn't exactly cll these big city driving. Tallahassee is what... 110K people?
  • Zac · 1 year ago
Without question, LA is the worst of the lot. More often than not, interstate highways are parking lots. However, even Tallahassee has some impressive suberbs, which all too often lends to miserable driving conditions. For those who like GA Tech, Atlanta traffic is down-right crazy. The point is, however, it's not always the size of a given city, but the surrounding areas which contribute to its troubles.
  • 1Tomcat · 1 year ago
Ya Kev Austin Tx is like 800,000 probably over 1.5 million with surrounding counties- Austin traffic sucks- the secret is to stay off of IH-35 if at all possible, leave real early whether headed north into town or south into town in the morning, like avoid driving between 0645 and 0830 if at all possible and in the evenings don't even think about trying to leave town in any direction at 1700 forget it, get on the road about 300 pm and go on city streets through all those lights and say a prayer and hopefully you might make it out alive.
I went to the Capitol city twice last week and its really a test of ones nerves, way too many a-holes on the road who don't value human life.Whats really funny are these real aggressive ones who weave back and forth, from lane to lane, like they are in a big hurry, then after all their craziness they are stuck at the light right by me and haven't gained 1 second off of their trip.
Be Safe ,Be courteous, drive friendly ??

I humbly submit that the best coaching jobs are those that fit a particular coach the best. It is not all about money. Some guys would rather stay close to home, and they don't need a billion dollars. A case in point, "Presbyterian coach Bobby Bentley, preceded Miller as Byrnes' head coach." Coach Bentley moved a few miles down the road to the college level. He could have moved his family somewhere else in the nation for more money.

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/preps/football/2...
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
Bobby Bentley is a fantastic coach. I hope nothing but the best for him. If he ever wants to go bigger, there will be plenty of opportunities.
  • Zac · 1 year ago
Agreed. Sometimes coaching is all about self-gratification; finding the right place to fit in and make a difference by building something worthy that may even withstand the test of time.
  • BigWarEagle · 1 year ago
Miami is way too high. They couldn't find a successful coach that wanted to take that job.
Notre Dame has become just another mid-level team. The Georgia job is rising quickly. Iowa shouldn't be in the top 30. The coaches of half of the teams on this list would jump at the chance to coach at LSU, Clemson or Auburn.
  • Kevin @ Fanblogs · 1 year ago
Obviously, I'm inclined to disagree. I really think you're underestimating the teams throughout the list and I would challenge you to identify ten schools that have to quiver in their boots if any non-top 20 above (including Auburn) comes a calling.

As far as Miami goes, the Canes wanted a Miami man, hence the pursuit of Schiano and ultimately led to the hiring of Randy Shannon from within. There's no question that the Canes could have had Dennis Ericksson or any number of coaches. While you may be right that I'm *overestimating* the lure of Miami to some degree, I would challenge you to discount Miami's tradition and skins on the wall relative to Clemson's one national championship.
  • grcunning · 1 year ago
    Clemson?
    Really?
Hasn't it been like 20 years since they even had a 10 win season?
Just because they are ranked in the preseason poll doesn't erase decades of mediocrity .
None of these coaches would even consider leaving for "Mighty Clemson"
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
    Clemson's 30 bowl wins to Iowa's 22.
    Clemson's 18 conference titles to Iowa's 11.
    Clemson 1 National Championship to Iowa's 0.
    Clemson's 80,000+ fans. Iowa's 70,000+ fans.
Ever been to Clemson? Ever been to Iowa? Who wouldn't rather live in Clemson?By the way, how's Woody Hayes doing these days? I heard that he opened a gym and is training boxers now. Maybe that's just a rumor though.

It would be VERY difficult to lure a coach away from Clemson, Auburn, or Virginia Tech. You'd have to tap into the top 12 or so programs to do that. I don't think any of those 3 schools would have much problem in taking a coach away from Iowa.

By the way, Charlie Bauman says hello.
  • Regan · 1 year ago
WOW. I was about to respond myself, but no reason to.

When CJ gets Stat-ting mad, I'm gonna steer clear...
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
No, please do. 2 rebuttals are better than one.
  • grcunning · 1 year ago
    How is Woody Hayes doing?
I don't know, why don't you check the hall of fame...

    How bout this one..
    Woody Hayes national championships: 4
Every coach in the history of Clemson national championships: 1

And the post I was responding to said "Half the teams"...I'm really impressed that you could back this up by cherry picking one.

In addition, this thread is about the top coaching jobs, not where you want to live. If that were the case, I think Hawaii would be on the list.

"You don't have to like me, just respect me."
    -------Wayne Woodrow "Woody" Hayes------
  • Zac · 1 year ago
Hawaii?!? Low pay (relatively speaking), lousy player facilities, and the cost of living...way too expensive. I personally couldn't imagine it myself. By the way, I would think things such as general living conditions, environment, community, would be factors an individual would consider in a coaching job. Unfortunately, the college football coaching world being as volatile as it is, all too many good men aren't given much of a choice, other than it's a job opening, and the economics of the situation dictates they have to accept it.
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
By the way, I was responding to your comment, "None of these coaches would even consider leaving for "Mighty Clemson"". None includes Iowa.
  • Hokie Guru · 1 year ago
There's such loyalty at Virginia Tech, too... you're right Clemson_Joe... Bud Foster is the best defensive coordinator in America and it would take a great BCS job to lure him away... I think Pitt may come calling for him next year.
  • GT_Chris · 1 year ago
    A) Woody Hayes coached Ohio State. Im not sure what that has to do with the University of Iowa.

    B) Ive been to Clemson and it was podunk. If not for the hills it would look just like the middle of Indiana or Ohio.

    C) Iowa played in a BCS game after the 2002 season, and beat LSU in the Citrus Bowl after 2004. The last time Clemson played in a bowl better than the Gator Bowl was a Citrus Bowl appearance in 1991.

In conclusion, Climpsun fans are even more delusional than Alabama fans. At least Bama won a NC in the 90's. The only thing the Purple Tigers have done in the last 15 years is choke. Maybe this is the year that changes, maybe not.

By the way, Kerry Watkins, Calvin Johnson, Tashard Choice, and 3 of the last 4 say hello.
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
A.) He took a shot at my team, and I took one at his team. Nice logic.

B.) Don't come back. If you can't appreciate natural beauty then you need to stay in the concrete jungles.

C.) We'd take Iowa to the cleaners this year. Anyone who thinks that a coach would leave Clemson to go to Iowa is horribly mistaken. The only way they'd have a prayer to get a coach from us, is if we let him go.

By the way, Calvin Johnson had a great game against us the last time he played us, didn't he? Using the logic of handpicking one performance, CJ, James, Woody Dantzler, and 4 of the last 7 say hello as well. After this season, make that 5 out of the last 8.

A little cranky because GT will be lucky to have 7 wins this year, are we?
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
Scratch that Woody Hayes comment. I know he has passed on. I really don't even know how it ended up in there. Somehow the editing didn't work out so well. I'm going to use my mulligan on that one.

    Mea culpa.
  • grcunning · 1 year ago
I responded above before I read your retraction. sorry
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
Since we have that all out of our systems, do you still think that Iowa is a better job than Clemson, or even Auburn or Virginia Tech?
  • grcunning · 1 year ago
No, I agree with you on Iowa, and probably Wisc and A&M as well
  • cdogg · 1 year ago
can someone explain to me how Georgia is higher than Miami? Seriously.....
  • Longhorns pound huskers · 1 year ago
Seriously? Because Miami is not a prime-time job anymore... the athletic fundraising is horrible at Miami, the atheltic facities on campus are a complete joke... for years, they were in that toilet, the Orange Bowl (and now they are in a toilet pro football stadium)... come on, C-Dogg... Miami could not beat anyone of the top 5 SEC teams... they couldn't beat Georgia, Florida, LSU, Auburn, or Tennessee... and might even have trouble with South Carolina. I don't know how Randy Shannon does it with the complete lack of support from the university administration, but somehow, he got a top 10 recruiting class.
  • cdogg · 1 year ago
Longhorns......I'll agree that the facilities suck. However do not throw us in the toilet yet. We always seem to rebuild and win another national title. Don't let Vince Young's miracle allow you to believe that Texass is that great. Last time I checked ,Miami has the same amount of titles as Texass this century. You might want to Google the last time Miami faced you guys...what made it so funny is the Texas defense was talking trash in the media leading up to the game.
  • Longhorns pound huskers · 1 year ago
Have fun in Boise this year.
  • Lennie Collins · 1 year ago
C-Dogg...Texas fans don't want to remember that 46-3 beatdown. Matter of fact a few years ago Miami approached Texas for a home and home series. Ol' William Brown decline stating he feared for his staff and players safety at and around the Orange Bowl BUT in the same press conference he stated how he loves going into the inter-city to recruit players. Sounds like Whack Brown was afraid to play Miami! Florida and Florida State will be avoid as well. Bring on Florida Atlantic, Central Florida, and Florida international.
  • cdogg · 1 year ago
Good one Lenny. I also remember Notre Dame with the same excuse. Now that we are inn Dolphins stadium, there will be some other excuse. Hopefully Miami wll be good enough to give Oklahoma a challenge when we play you again.
  • Longhorns Not In Boise · 1 year ago
That was a good history lesson... but I'm sure Miami won't even be in the Top 5 in the ACC and might have trouble even getting to Boise this year... Clemson, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, North Carolina, and maybe Georgia Tech all have better teams (the Hokies have had the 'Canes number for years in the Big East and the ACC)... sure you can talk about past history, blah, blah, blah... but that's the past... Coker won with Butch Davis players.

I remember that Rice game that I attended when the MOB Marching Owl Band formed a huge car at halftime and they said ole Darel Royal hit a bump in Miami and the front tire went flat.
I don't recall Texas backing away from anybody including Ohio State and Arkansas. Its kinda lunacy in a way for a fan of a particular team to criticize their opponents schedule. Wouldn't not favor your particular teams schedule to play a team that quite frankly, probably plays one of the nations toughest schedules. Texas in 2008 plays 3 teams that finished 07 in the top ten and 9 teams that went bowling
    Texas Schedule 2008
Florida Atlantic 2007 Sun Belt Champs 8-5 Bowl winners

    @ UTEP C-USA 2007 4-8

Arkansas SEC 2007 8-5 lost to Missu-Cotton Bowl

    Rice C-USA 2007 3-9

    @ Colorado B-12 2007 6-7 lost to Bama - Independence Bowl

Oklahoma B-12 chumps 11-3 lost to West Virginia

    Missouri B-12 2007 12-2 Bowl Winners beat Arkansas-Cotton

    Oklahoma State B-12 2007 7-6 Bowl winners beat Indiana-Insight

@ Texas Tech 2007 9-4 Bowl winners beat Virgina Gator Bowl

    Baylor B-12 2007 3-9

    @ Kansas B-12 2007 12-1 Bowl winners beat Virginia Tech-Orange

Texas A&M 2007 7-6 lost to Penn State- Alamo bowl

@ Kansas City Big-12 Champ game against Missu,KU,Colo or Neb

Big bowl game against anybody AZ st, Iowa,USC, Mich whoever and win

Hey Lennie I'll be at The Luling Longhorn Garcia Bud Lite tailgate party, we are located on the south east side of DKR Memorial, we are sponsered by Bud Lite and we have Luling City Market sausage- look for the big burnt orange tent with the banner, we will be there Aug 30 prior to kickoff- come on by and say hello, eat a ring of sausage. You can recognize me because I'll be wearing burnt Orange

Hey 1Tomcat...William did back out of a home & home series with the Miami Hurricanes and that was the reason he gave. I saw the press conference. I also know that he avoided a game with Notre Dame and chose North Carolina State in a College Kickoff Classic and North Carolina State beat Texas. Only National Title games mean something to me. I would love to meet you, seriously BUT I am leaving 08/29 heading to Grapevine, Texas for a retreat my church is having. I doubt that I will catch ANY OF THE GAMES Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. If you come back for any other of the Texas games I would love to meet you. You will see me before I will see you because I wear my Crimson & Cream gear EVERY Saturday. Take care and Oklahoma will be the Big 12 Champions...again!

Trust me...I would love to meet ya. I work about 4 miles from where the football teams plays. My son also lives near that area. I avoid that area an I-35 though on gameday.
  • 1Tomcat · 1 year ago
Heck man I avoid IH-35 all together, I come up from the south Airport Blvd, cut across at Manor Rd' we usually park behind the Baseball field on the street.
This Saturday I'm not sure of kickoff time, but we will leave several hours before kickoff- for sure. The folks at the tailgate are really cool folks, the only bummer is those dang porta-cans- shoot its got to be 110F in those things. Hey you mentioned that you work at a medical center perhaps Seton over on 32nd street. I got my hand sewed up one time over there and they did a pretty good job even replaced part of my thumb. I went to Brakenridge one time and they sewed up my head after I busted out a windsheild on a 58 chevy. Stay away from the small town hospitals- they scare me.
    Peace out

  • Lennie Collins · 1 year ago
I think the game starts at 6 PM. Texas wins by 40+ points. Enjoy the game. Stay cool. I will be enjoying my "singles retreat" my church is having. Seton is actually on 34th and Medical Parkway!
  • grcunning · 1 year ago
I agree. While one or two good years on the football field might raise the visibility level of a specific coach, it takes much more than that to change the perception of the job as a whole.
  • cdogg · 1 year ago
    big war Eagle,

Miami couldn't find a coach that wanted the job because Canes fans are spoiled and every coach is in the hot seat from day one. I guess these coaches are a victim of Miami's national titles. I'm sure more coaches would love to coach your school over Miami because the expectations are lower and they can 1)stick around with job security, 2)actually BUY a house and not rent it, and 3) enroll their kids in school without worrying about uprooting them too quickly. At Miami we recommend that coaches rent a house in Coral Cables or a condo on Star Island......don't BUY a house because it may be on the market in 2-3 years. As far as Randy Shannon....he deserves (and will get) a longer leash becuse he has played a big roll in Miami's success....both as a player and coach. No other former Miami coach can boast that(to my knowledge).

"the neighborhood surrounding the campus is like a demilitarized zone"

Zac, you've obviously never been to Coral Gables.

    http://www.miamicondocommando.com/images/Coral_...
  • Zac · 1 year ago
I have never argued that the Miami campus is a beautiful place. And, in truth, it's the area around the Orange bowl which better fits my description above. So, while perhaps it doesn't "surround" the campus, approximately how far is the work zone, formally known as the Orange Bowl, from campus center? Exaggerated, yes. Entirely inaccurate, not quite.
  • BigWarEagle · 1 year ago
I am not saying Miami doesnt belong on this list. I just do not think it is a top 12 job anymore. There many things that contribute to making a job desirable, not just tradition. There is the area, the recruiting base, the quality of life, the boosters, the tradition and the compensation, etc. Based on all of these considerations, I would probably put Texas at the top, followed by Ohio State and Florida. Iowa would not be in the top 30, and Bama would surely not be the first SEC team mentioned. Yes, the pay is great and the tradition is excellent but who needs that pressure?Florida, Georgia and Tennessee would all be ahead of them on my list.
Everyone jumped on my mention of Clemson. I dont believe they belong at the top of the list but I do think that an argument can be made that they deserve to be on it as much as many of these teams.
Kevin, I did not say that any of these teams would "quiver" if a non top 20 team above came calling. The debate is over which is a better job not a better team.
  • cdogg · 1 year ago
Since the debate is over which is the better job, then lets compare how many Georgia coaches made the jump to the NFL, compared to Miami coaches. How many NFL owners wrote fat checks to get Miami coaches vs. Georgia coaches. I guess all of these NFL owners are idiots or smart...gues it depends on if you are a Miami fan or not.
  • BigWarEagle · 1 year ago
The debate is over which is the best job right now. Not what was the best job 10 years ago. Yes, Miami has had some great coaches but ask 100 CFB head coaches if they would rather take the Georgia or Miami job and I think you will be very disappointed at the response. Georgia would win hands down.
  • Zac · 1 year ago
C-Dogg, while that makes for an interesting debate, you have to take into consideration how many of those coaches who made the jump from college to the NFL are/were successful.
  • RazzMaTazz · 1 year ago
Auburn, Virginia Tech, and my beloved Clemson should make the top 20. I wouldn't consider Iowa, Wisconsin, or Colorado prestigious. I didn't even realize that Iowa or Colorado still had football teams. I'd entertain the thought that VT and Clemson don't make the cut, but Auburn? Kevin, I think were just trying to push War Eagle Atlanta's buttons. But apparently WEA sniffed out the play and countered with a non-response. And the crowd went wild.

OK. Enough of this silliness. Just 5 more days (if you include Wake at Baylor on Thursday) until we can have truly meaningful converstations about whose mother does what to whom.
  • Hokie Guru · 1 year ago
Auburn, Virginia Tech, and Clemson should be in the Top 20... no doubt.

Furthermore, Clemson, Virginia Tech, Virginia, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Georgia Tech, and Florida State are the only schools that care about athletic facilities in the ACC.

Miami, Duke, Wake Forest, BC, and Maryland don't care about athletic facilities at all and it shows because they can't hire 1st tier coaches. Jim Grobe at Wake does more with less than any coach in America. I expect Grobe to be at Penn State next year.
  • RazzMaTazz · 1 year ago
Everybody expects Schiano to take over Penn State, and I think he'd be a great choice. But Grobe would also be a great hire for Penn State-- and about 98% of Division I schools. I wish Clemson would hire him. If Grobe won the ACC with Wake's football tradition and resouces, I'm sure he could have done it years ago (and probably repeatedly) at Clemson.

The top job unless they have another season like they did last year is Notre Dame. It pains me to say that due to the fact that I hate Notre Dame (but I respect their tradition).

The second would be Ohio State. Beat Michigan or be gone. And the third would be Michigan. Beat Ohio State or be gone. Arguably the greatest rivalry in sports.

    Fourth would be Texas.

The rest would follow the top teams in the top conferences. USC, Nebraska, Oklahoma, FSU, FLA, Miami, LSU, Goergia and the like. I am not trying to reduce these teams in any away as all and more have great programs and have won their share of championship. I am basing my top four on tradition alone and the alumni and fan base that these teams have.
  • Ramblin' Gator · 1 year ago
It pains me to acknowledge that ND is a high-level coaching job, but I don't believe they deserve the #1 spot on the list. Urban Meyer had his choice of positions 3 years ago, and he passed on ND to coach at UF, despite his prior interest in the ND position. If ND is truly #1 on that list, they should be able to attract a proven BCS-caliber coach without having to pay a king's ransom to get him. Taking an NCAA-unproven OC from the NFL tells me ND had lowered their aspirations a bit.

Wow! I missed that one. I hate ND, but you're right. They need to be at or near the top as far as prestigious coaching jobs-- althought it's been tarnished lately.

Ok, I'll end all this speculation so that we can move on to the next topic. A real coach wants a challenge, in addition to a nice check, good facilities, etc., etc. I submit that Mr. Spurrier has the Ultimate coaching job. No winning tradition, but all the tools. When he gets his NC at USC, the whole damn world will sit up and say, "the OBC could have done it anywhere". You heard it here first.

IF he, in fact, does do it, then you'll be absolutely right.

For what it's worth I think this season is huge for the program. This year's recruiting class wasn't stellar, and the best part was actually from last year. He needs to get another solid class in Columbia, and this year's results could determine a lot there.

As one of my coworkers (a long time Carolina fan and grad) says, "Carolina has always been able to hang with anyone with their first 22, the problem arises when they have to go deeper into the lineup." If Spurrier can remedy that, you might be proven correct.

you are an idiot. Tradition today isnt worth the three wins it was in the 60's the 70's and early 80's. Notre Dame is not the top job in the Country. There admission standards alone make it the toughest place to recruit. They do not allow the coaching staff to work to there abilities. They are not in a conference. The only thing they have is there money deal and tv package. And if this playoff thing ever happens you will see Notre Dame become the next member of the big east or big ten.

As for who is number one? Right now it would have to be Ohio "bcs loser" State. They have facilities, 100,000 plus at the horse shoe, a conference bid every year, coaching, and they get the kids to come there. I like the texas pick, I think alabama, usc and florida should be in the top five also. Other then that does it really matter. No other schools float my boat. Clemson is a place that is very interesting to me. I think they might be the sleeper this year in the Championship Chase.

This ranking is way too subjective. It fails to account for what I like to call "The Zook Effect".

It's almost impossible to follow a legend into even the most desirable coaching situations. Imagine how much scrutiny will be placed on Pete Carroll's successor, someday. Jimbo Fisher is now staring down the barrel of this gun.

There are exceptions to The Zook Effect, most notably Les Miles who has been at least as good and possibly better than Nick Saban.

Zac, so you're admitting you lied to make your comments sound more important, man, you sound like Billary Clinton here. Sniper fire on the UM campus? Miami doesn't even play in the Orange Bowl anymore, so that's a moot point as well. And Dolphin Stadium facilities are top notch. The 'Canes on-campus facilities are on the rise.

ND's is at the top of the list because the coach can block the sun!
