Fanblogs Open Conference Championship Thread
Motown is here in Detroit, by the way. Don't disrespect us by citing that cowtown by our name any longer...
Now they can get on to bashing their mediocre coach. Stewart is as inept at running WVU football as McCain would be at running the White House. Both are too old & decrepid to do anything but make sure their Depends are dry...
Go Blue!!!!!
As a WVU fan, I thought Rodriguez was an excellent coach. But his lack of integrity and common decency more than offsets his positive contributions to the football program. Bill Stewart is quietly putting together an outstanding group of commitments for the 2009 class. WVU football will be just fine with Coach Stewart and his new staff.
As for Michigan, the timing of Rodriguez's surrender proves what WVU fans have long suspected - that the highest levels at UM, President Coleman and AD Martin, are just as sleazy as Rodriguez. They knew all along about the buyout clause, and if the facts are allowed to be known, they agreed to pay a portion of the $4 million if Rodriguez - with their complicity - could not get it overturned. This is a disgraceful and embarrassing outcome for the University of Michigan.
If you didn't hold that same opinion of Rodriguez prior to him flirting with Alabama the year before, its a tad hypocritical for you to hold it now, just because he finally left this time...
However, I disagree that WVU accepted Michigan's purported superiority. Michigan/RRod blinked, because WVU called their bluff--plain & simple. Make no mistake--they were going to lose the case had it gone to fruition; no doubt about it. Plus atty fees & costs, and the embarrassment of the dirt kicked up by discovery (that's why they settled WHEN they did). They had no case--and those "WV hillbillies" didn't fall for big bad Blue's bullsh*t bluff....they saw right through it.
Turns out they're actually educating folks up there in MoTown, and those arrogant snobs from Ann Arbor got sent pack'n with their tails tucked neatly between their legs--and a whole lotta' egg on their face.
GO GATORS!!
Michigan came off terrible, and Rodriguez's allegations that he offered "jobs for testimony" friendly to his case, was just one of many credibility eroding issues for him.
The bottom line is, neither side wanted to pay up, and ultimately, Rich-Rod is going to pony up, as well he should. Michigan backed the wrong horse, and it'll cost them dos million, as well...
But it's silly for you to say that WV can't retain top flight coaches...He had just spurned Alabama for ridiculous kwan the year prior to this offseason. So, it's not all about the money, as evidenced by his rejection of Tuscaloosa last year, and his agreement to take over the reigns in Ann Arbor.
Les Miles is making 3.45 million a year...and he almost left for Michigan, if not for Herbstreit's dumb(or was he really smart, in all honesty?)arse...
Would that mean that we don't have the financial and tangible resources necessary to lure or keep good coaches?
That's what I thought...

How ever will he manage this on his salary?
Here's what's sad. This entire thing was unnecessary, completely and utterly unnecessary. Not only did the circumstances draw far more attention than it rightfully deserved, but it unjustly drew far too much criticism upon the people of West Virginia. Forget about WVU; ALL West Virginians were made to look like fools. MI fans didn't come away from this entirely unscathed either.
The law suit could have been avoided. Precedent had already been set by MI's Head Basketball Coach, John Bielein. He had a $2.5 M buy-out reduced to $1.5 M by (R U ready for this?) sitting down and talking to the people holding the contract. This was Rich Rodriguez's ace in the hole. All he had to do was to site that fact, and $4 M would have been dropped to $2.6 M without anyone ever having spoken to an attorney.
Of course, this too would have been a whole lot easier if he'd done everything by the rules and above board. No, he had to play it like Mission Impossible, sneaking out of town in the dead of night to a place of origin known only to him (and MI) to finalize the deal. It's no wonder people were bitter, not to mention questioned his integrity.
He was a good coach for WVU. He and his staff accomplished things that no one can take away. That having been said, WVU football will move on and do just fine without him. Whether or not he'll do as well or better at MI remains to be seen. For the sake of MI fans everywhere, we can only hope. Till then, as my esteemed colleague, Tomcat, has been known to say: "Adios Amigo"! (But I prefer Arnold's "Hasta La Vista, BAY BEE.")
I'm pretty sure that's exactly what Michigan was banking on. Good for WVU not to give in.
F... Michigan. F... RichieRod.
GO GATORS!!
i am really glad we got ourselves done with these dirty deeds about a snake who wouldent' honor his contract and about a president who was into his term and the governors daughter who gets an MBA without doing the real coursework
im sure Garrison was a good prez but he had to step down with a scandal that big
WEA when Oct 23 rolls around i seriously got u on a ride to the game (probably wanna fly to Pittsburgh tho)
i live in Wheeling and its less than an hour away from Mo-Town
On another related note...has anyone heard the rumor I've been hearing that RR got a WVU cheerleader pregnant??? This would definately be a reason to split in a hurry like he did. Again, right now I take it as grapevine
* - Please take into consideration that I'm just trying to crack a joke here. I know--it probably isn't funny if I have to make a note.
** - I'm not sure if T-Mac approves of this message.
You know that was a dig at Michigan fans now, right? The Eers will be laughing right along with you. Except for Zac. He still cares a little about Rich Rod...
Dude. Surely you jest. ;-)
"Upper Middle-Class Rod just doesn't have the same appeal..."
No, but Broke-Rod Mountain is kinda catchy.
"Motown is here in Detroit, by the way. Don't disrespect us by citing that cowtown by our name any longer..."
Last I heard, "cowtown" referred to towns of the SW, like TX. WV is not only no where near there, it's east of the Mississippi River; in fact, it's east of the Ohio River, nestled deep in the Appalachian Mountains. That tharz hill country, flatlander. And, don't you forget it. While you're into remembering geography, try a little history on for size. Rich Rodriguez's 1st year with WVU: 3-8. Go Blue!!!
We're much more of a football hotbed than WVU could EVER be...and that's at the top of their game.
Flatlander & proud to be one. Up here on dry land, we prefer to use the vowels God gave us, wear shoes that cover our feet like we're actually civilized, marry people that we DIDN'T meet at our family reunion, and...
Not fret over coaches who left us for a better job....f-in MONTHS AFTER...
Get over it... Throwing rocks at the throne doesn't do any good. While you're watching the happenings going on in AA, you guys need to be on stroke alert, standing by with your AED's with Stewart. He's one fumble away from the big one... "Down goes White...fumble on the play...and down goes Stewart..."
Go Blue!!! Maize & Blue that is...
Too true, very hard to argue with tradition & success, let alone traditional success. Then again, they used to say the same about teams like AL, FSU, Miami, NE, & ND, and look where they are now.
While we're wondering what's happened to them, I wonder if MI could have beaten GA in Atlanta 3 years ago. I would have bet on them against GA Tech 2 years ago, but I don't think they would have touched OK last year, despite how good they looked against FL. You can throw all of the slights around at West Virginians as you please. You can't take away from them what their team has accomplished over the last 5 years, even if RR was the coach.
Of course it follows one can't hide from the failures either, such as WVU's loss to Pitt, or MI's loss to a much smaller school from a much smaller town, located in hills similar to those of WV, only located in the lower Appalachian's of northwest NC (a loss I defended, by the way). Still it must have been tough for a proud flatlander, like yourself (up there on dry land, where they prefer to use the vowels God gave them, wear shoes that cover their feet as if they were actually civilized, and marry people they claim they DIDN'T meet at a family reunion) to watch his team lose to a team of folk who apparently do otherwise. Now, WVU has one of their coaches, and I suppose we have MI to thank for it.
As for Pat White fumbling it away, yeah, he gave a few away last year, and a few too many in one sitting cost him and the team. Funny, neither he nor Coach Stewart did so against OK, and Stewart managed to hold on to the lion's share of Rich Rod's recruiting class. Of course, that may have had something to do with Coach Stewart being Rich Rod's recruiting coordinator.
So, in effect, MI & WVU got what they wanted. WVU has a man who has proven himself in the big game, during the worst of times. WVU has their $4 M. WVU even has one of the best recruiting classes they've had in a long time. They'll be just fine, even after Pat White has left. And MI, well, they have Les. . ., I mean Rich Mile. . .ahem, I mean. . .MI has a new coach too. Enjoy!!!
It is a state, right? And not part of East Virginia? Somebody get me a map. I gotta fly into Morgantown come October. Anyone pick me up?
:-)
"It is a state, right? And not part of East Virginia? Somebody get me a map. I gotta fly into Morgantown come October. Anyone pick me up?"
You may not want to meet the guys who might pick you up after that remark. In fact, it's not whether or not somebody will pick you up, it's where they'll set you down...
Just kidding, WarEagle. If I could make the game, by some miracle of science, I'd make the arrangements for you. Sadly, I'll have to find a way to watch it on the tube, and you'll have to blog your experience in Morgantown. Win or lose, I hope it's a fun one.
Thought that would get a rise out of you, Zac. Or a death threat from Diggs...
Just kidding. Yea, time to put this ugly incident to bed.
:-)
Hopefully the outcome of this case will show other philanderer's of the game that they will indeed be held responsible for their actions...I'm just glad it's over.
