Fanblogs.com: Rich Rod to roll wheelbarrow full of money to WVU

  • Go Blue Jeff · 1 year ago
Glad to see them "win" their itty-bitty argument up there in Morgantown...

Motown is here in Detroit, by the way. Don't disrespect us by citing that cowtown by our name any longer...

Now they can get on to bashing their mediocre coach. Stewart is as inept at running WVU football as McCain would be at running the White House. Both are too old & decrepid to do anything but make sure their Depends are dry...

    Go Blue!!!!!
  • Diggs_the_Mountie · 1 year ago
You guys think the Appalachian State loss was the end? Wait until Utah rolls into town. The Big House will be deafeningly..... silent.
  • Charlie · 1 year ago
That's great news for WVU, but this whole fiasco could have been avoided if Rodriguez had an ounce of integrity and simply honored the agreement he signed.

As a WVU fan, I thought Rodriguez was an excellent coach. But his lack of integrity and common decency more than offsets his positive contributions to the football program. Bill Stewart is quietly putting together an outstanding group of commitments for the 2009 class. WVU football will be just fine with Coach Stewart and his new staff.

As for Michigan, the timing of Rodriguez's surrender proves what WVU fans have long suspected - that the highest levels at UM, President Coleman and AD Martin, are just as sleazy as Rodriguez. They knew all along about the buyout clause, and if the facts are allowed to be known, they agreed to pay a portion of the $4 million if Rodriguez - with their complicity - could not get it overturned. This is a disgraceful and embarrassing outcome for the University of Michigan.
  • TigerEducated · 1 year ago
Seriously? Rodriguez has NO allegiance to anyone other than himself...He took a job at one of the Top 5 schools in the country...he's the only game in town among the major sports at the school.

If you didn't hold that same opinion of Rodriguez prior to him flirting with Alabama the year before, its a tad hypocritical for you to hold it now, just because he finally left this time...
  • jake · 1 year ago
This sure doesn't surprise anyone. This is U of M's attempt to mask the stink of desperation. If I were WVU, I would just drag this through the courts. Of course, money talks and I can't blame WVU for accepting such a large settlement.
  • txMaize · 1 year ago
because dragging this through the courts would accomplish what exactly for WVU? I mean, aside from continuing to show their bitter, "fatal attraction"-esque tendencies.
  • Zac · 1 year ago
Agreed, with the initial general sentiment; that is, dragging it through the courts would accomplish absolutely nothing. While betrayal is still a bitter pill to swallow, it's over, as well it should be. Time to move on.
  • jake · 1 year ago
It would serve as an ethical stab at the high-and-mighty Michigan. When you look at how this played out from the beginning, Michigan has flexed its muscles of prestige parallel to say Notre Dame stealing coaches from Boise State. Both WVU and Michigan are highly respectable football programs yet are on completely different levels in most other regards. Michigan knows it. WVU knows it. But the critical issue is how Michigan administrative personnel and Rodriguez followed through with this move - classless. Moreover, I believe it is a smarter move for WVU to just take the settlement. This inevitable action, however, reaffirms the reality known from the beginning: WVU lacks the financial and other tangible resources necessary to lure, or in this case, keep good coaches.
  • TampaGator · 1 year ago
    Classless? Damn straight.

However, I disagree that WVU accepted Michigan's purported superiority. Michigan/RRod blinked, because WVU called their bluff--plain & simple. Make no mistake--they were going to lose the case had it gone to fruition; no doubt about it. Plus atty fees & costs, and the embarrassment of the dirt kicked up by discovery (that's why they settled WHEN they did). They had no case--and those "WV hillbillies" didn't fall for big bad Blue's bullsh*t bluff....they saw right through it.

Turns out they're actually educating folks up there in MoTown, and those arrogant snobs from Ann Arbor got sent pack'n with their tails tucked neatly between their legs--and a whole lotta' egg on their face.

    GO GATORS!!
  • Tom_Blogical · 1 year ago
Once again, TG--agreed on all counts. :-)
  • TigerEducated · 1 year ago
I think you're off base, all the way around...

Michigan came off terrible, and Rodriguez's allegations that he offered "jobs for testimony" friendly to his case, was just one of many credibility eroding issues for him.

The bottom line is, neither side wanted to pay up, and ultimately, Rich-Rod is going to pony up, as well he should. Michigan backed the wrong horse, and it'll cost them dos million, as well...

But it's silly for you to say that WV can't retain top flight coaches...He had just spurned Alabama for ridiculous kwan the year prior to this offseason. So, it's not all about the money, as evidenced by his rejection of Tuscaloosa last year, and his agreement to take over the reigns in Ann Arbor.

Les Miles is making 3.45 million a year...and he almost left for Michigan, if not for Herbstreit's dumb(or was he really smart, in all honesty?)arse...

Would that mean that we don't have the financial and tangible resources necessary to lure or keep good coaches?

    That's what I thought...
  • JB · 1 year ago
    No Herbstreit is an idiot
  • Charlie · 1 year ago
No need to drag it out, Rodriguez has cooked his own goose. Everybody knows now what a greedy and sleazy person he is. He'll be on an extremely short leash at Michigan, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if he's gone in four years and coaching someplace like Ball State or Villanova - no disrespect to either school.

  • Marko · 1 year ago
WVU doesnt want this to go to trial either. Its time both schools just got on with business.
  • OU_Ron · 1 year ago
They should have made him pay his 1.5 all at once......
  • shiguy · 1 year ago
no this is fine. i would be upset if WVU dragged this through courts as they got what was in the contract of $4 million. doesn't matter who is on paper as paying it rodriguez or michigan either way it's going to be michigan fronting the bill. the whole thing was rather rediculous in the first place as why rich rod would think that a "alleged" verbal agreement would hold any value in court against a signed contract.
  • Zac · 1 year ago
"Rodriguez will foot the rest of the bill in three easy payments of just $500,000 each."

How ever will he manage this on his salary?

Here's what's sad. This entire thing was unnecessary, completely and utterly unnecessary. Not only did the circumstances draw far more attention than it rightfully deserved, but it unjustly drew far too much criticism upon the people of West Virginia. Forget about WVU; ALL West Virginians were made to look like fools. MI fans didn't come away from this entirely unscathed either.

The law suit could have been avoided. Precedent had already been set by MI's Head Basketball Coach, John Bielein. He had a $2.5 M buy-out reduced to $1.5 M by (R U ready for this?) sitting down and talking to the people holding the contract. This was Rich Rodriguez's ace in the hole. All he had to do was to site that fact, and $4 M would have been dropped to $2.6 M without anyone ever having spoken to an attorney.

Of course, this too would have been a whole lot easier if he'd done everything by the rules and above board. No, he had to play it like Mission Impossible, sneaking out of town in the dead of night to a place of origin known only to him (and MI) to finalize the deal. It's no wonder people were bitter, not to mention questioned his integrity.

He was a good coach for WVU. He and his staff accomplished things that no one can take away. That having been said, WVU football will move on and do just fine without him. Whether or not he'll do as well or better at MI remains to be seen. For the sake of MI fans everywhere, we can only hope. Till then, as my esteemed colleague, Tomcat, has been known to say: "Adios Amigo"! (But I prefer Arnold's "Hasta La Vista, BAY BEE.")
  • TampaGator · 1 year ago
"...Precedent had already been set by MI's Head Basketball Coach, John Bielein. He had a $2.5 M buy-out reduced to $1.5..."

I'm pretty sure that's exactly what Michigan was banking on. Good for WVU not to give in.

    F... Michigan. F... RichieRod.

hooray West Virginia can finally get out of the shadows and back into the limelight with our new coaching staff and new (interim) president

i am really glad we got ourselves done with these dirty deeds about a snake who wouldent' honor his contract and about a president who was into his term and the governors daughter who gets an MBA without doing the real coursework

im sure Garrison was a good prez but he had to step down with a scandal that big

WEA when Oct 23 rolls around i seriously got u on a ride to the game (probably wanna fly to Pittsburgh tho)

i live in Wheeling and its less than an hour away from Mo-Town
  • shiguy · 1 year ago
diggs, war eagle, mcateer where is everyone going to be pregaming for this game? i'll probably go to "the pit" with my student id. they don't have a date on them so i assume there is no way they wouldn't let me in. if anyone wants in as a guest let me know (although i don't recommend it for war eagle less you like to take on a challenge).
  • Diggs_the_Mountie · 1 year ago
Well I was thinking of joining the Blue Lot for the tailgate but there may be some cahnges happening this year. Something about the University making that area off limits now or charging a buttload extra to hold it there? I'll have to get more details as the season gets nearer. I had never joined my Rivals buddies before but had planned to this season and now this happens.....Me the wifey and family usually mix it up by eating at different restaurants each time we make it to a game, then we mingle in the parking lot the mass of fans before going to our seats.
  • cdogg · 1 year ago
Dear Bitter WVU....can we move on now? Let it go.
  • hokie_pokie · 1 year ago
WVU is looking out for it's best interests. Not letting RR walk without fulfilling his contract is striclty business and smart of the university. RR was hoping that WVU would look away.

On another related note...has anyone heard the rumor I've been hearing that RR got a WVU cheerleader pregnant??? This would definately be a reason to split in a hurry like he did. Again, right now I take it as grapevine
  • Zac · 1 year ago
C-Dogg, to someone outside of WV, this has probably gotten old fast. I don't blame you. Now, I'll tell ya why I'm tired of hearing (reading actually) "...move on...Let it go." sentiments. West Virginians are responsible for maybe 20% of this media circus. Most of the news has come out of Ann Arbor or else-where. There was even an article written by some bastage in Houston. AND, in case you didn't notice, it wasn't a West Virginian who posted this thread. Believe me; I have no doubt West Virginians want to move on. It's the rest of the world that's dragging this out.
  • Tom_Blogical · 1 year ago
I just have one question. Can he still be considered "Rich" Rod after his "reduced" payout of $1.5 million?

    * - Please take into consideration that I'm just trying to crack a joke here. I know--it probably isn't funny if I have to make a note.

** - I'm not sure if T-Mac approves of this message.
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
Yea, Tom, he'll still have to be 'Rich' Rod. Upper Middle-Class Rod just doesn't have the same appeal...

You know that was a dig at Michigan fans now, right? The Eers will be laughing right along with you. Except for Zac. He still cares a little about Rich Rod...
  • Zac · 1 year ago
OH THTOP!!! Ya thilly. (Ok, he ithz a thavage.)
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
Speaking of, where is T-Mac? We play them opening game and I'd like to get his take on his team. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but where is Gatorhippy? Did they not make the switch?
  • Tom_Blogical · 1 year ago
"You know that was a dig at Michigan fans now, right?"

    Dude. Surely you jest. ;-)

"Upper Middle-Class Rod just doesn't have the same appeal..."

No, but Broke-Rod Mountain is kinda catchy.

Ah, always nice to hear from one of the more intellectual MI fans.

"Motown is here in Detroit, by the way. Don't disrespect us by citing that cowtown by our name any longer..."

Last I heard, "cowtown" referred to towns of the SW, like TX. WV is not only no where near there, it's east of the Mississippi River; in fact, it's east of the Ohio River, nestled deep in the Appalachian Mountains. That tharz hill country, flatlander. And, don't you forget it. While you're into remembering geography, try a little history on for size. Rich Rodriguez's 1st year with WVU: 3-8. Go Blue!!!
  • Go Blue Jeff · 1 year ago
If Utah wins, so be it... We stand to have some 1st year growing pains for sure. 3-8 though?? Uh...no...
We're much more of a football hotbed than WVU could EVER be...and that's at the top of their game.

Flatlander & proud to be one. Up here on dry land, we prefer to use the vowels God gave us, wear shoes that cover our feet like we're actually civilized, marry people that we DIDN'T meet at our family reunion, and...

Not fret over coaches who left us for a better job....f-in MONTHS AFTER...

Get over it... Throwing rocks at the throne doesn't do any good. While you're watching the happenings going on in AA, you guys need to be on stroke alert, standing by with your AED's with Stewart. He's one fumble away from the big one... "Down goes White...fumble on the play...and down goes Stewart..."

Go Blue!!! Maize & Blue that is...
  • Zac · 1 year ago
"We're much more of a football hotbed than WVU could EVER be...and that's at the top of their game."

Too true, very hard to argue with tradition & success, let alone traditional success. Then again, they used to say the same about teams like AL, FSU, Miami, NE, & ND, and look where they are now.

While we're wondering what's happened to them, I wonder if MI could have beaten GA in Atlanta 3 years ago. I would have bet on them against GA Tech 2 years ago, but I don't think they would have touched OK last year, despite how good they looked against FL. You can throw all of the slights around at West Virginians as you please. You can't take away from them what their team has accomplished over the last 5 years, even if RR was the coach.

Of course it follows one can't hide from the failures either, such as WVU's loss to Pitt, or MI's loss to a much smaller school from a much smaller town, located in hills similar to those of WV, only located in the lower Appalachian's of northwest NC (a loss I defended, by the way). Still it must have been tough for a proud flatlander, like yourself (up there on dry land, where they prefer to use the vowels God gave them, wear shoes that cover their feet as if they were actually civilized, and marry people they claim they DIDN'T meet at a family reunion) to watch his team lose to a team of folk who apparently do otherwise. Now, WVU has one of their coaches, and I suppose we have MI to thank for it.

As for Pat White fumbling it away, yeah, he gave a few away last year, and a few too many in one sitting cost him and the team. Funny, neither he nor Coach Stewart did so against OK, and Stewart managed to hold on to the lion's share of Rich Rod's recruiting class. Of course, that may have had something to do with Coach Stewart being Rich Rod's recruiting coordinator.

So, in effect, MI & WVU got what they wanted. WVU has a man who has proven himself in the big game, during the worst of times. WVU has their $4 M. WVU even has one of the best recruiting classes they've had in a long time. They'll be just fine, even after Pat White has left. And MI, well, they have Les. . ., I mean Rich Mile. . .ahem, I mean. . .MI has a new coach too. Enjoy!!!
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
Now it's time for WVU to file suit against Alabama in federal court in Atlanta for damages from the attempted poaching of Rich Rod the year before. That specific act was part and parcel in the opening up of the bidding to all comers for Rod's services, irrevocably harming the program and damaging the reputation of the university and the state of West Virginia.

It is a state, right? And not part of East Virginia? Somebody get me a map. I gotta fly into Morgantown come October. Anyone pick me up?

    :-)
  • Zac · 1 year ago
War Eagle, you're a pip, ya know dat?

"It is a state, right? And not part of East Virginia? Somebody get me a map. I gotta fly into Morgantown come October. Anyone pick me up?"

You may not want to meet the guys who might pick you up after that remark. In fact, it's not whether or not somebody will pick you up, it's where they'll set you down...

Just kidding, WarEagle. If I could make the game, by some miracle of science, I'd make the arrangements for you. Sadly, I'll have to find a way to watch it on the tube, and you'll have to blog your experience in Morgantown. Win or lose, I hope it's a fun one.
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
At least I'm not a pimp...

Thought that would get a rise out of you, Zac. Or a death threat from Diggs...

Just kidding. Yea, time to put this ugly incident to bed.

    :-)
  • Diggs_the_Mountie · 1 year ago
Get a rental...just make sure you inspect it for explosives first...We don't take too kindly to Auburn fans round' these here parts...

Hopefully the outcome of this case will show other philanderer's of the game that they will indeed be held responsible for their actions...I'm just glad it's over.
  • jk · 1 year ago
    I'll pick you up.
  • shiguy · 1 year ago
actually just so ya get it right you're gonna have to fly into pitt airport, less you got your own personal jet ;-) the airport in motown is a small private one.
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
I'm just trying to save you from a little heat. There are more Mountaineers on this site than fans from any other team. And I think they're all armed, too...
  • Tom_Blogical · 1 year ago
I appreciate that. I'd hope the note about cracking a joke would save me from the heat, though. And the fact that I know West Virginia fans have a good sense of humor--especially since I'm mocking the University of Michigan for being too cheap to cover the buyout clause. Right? Right.
  • Diggs_the_Mountie · 1 year ago
I'm pretty sure were not gonna need guns to beat Auburn this year....;)
