Fanblogs Open Conference Championship Thread
"It should be noted," the May 19, 2008, NCAA letter said, "that a delay in responding (to the allegations) could postpone the hearing date."
Alabama's hearing date was postponed. Until Feb. 20, 2009.
I guess one could argue that one gets what one deserves. But, for a moment, consider a kid who's wanted by 6-12 schools. Such interest not only fans the flames of the ego, but that's a lot of interest to sort out...for a kid. First, I would like to think he has some kind of life outside of football, which doesn't always involve researching every little detail on a school with the storied tradition of an Alabama. Secondly, (Yes, I'm gonna make an assumption our recruit isn't an Academic All-American.) you can't necessarily expect the average 4-5 star recruit to take the necessary time to do what might be considered the smart thing in applying research to a storied program, given he may not have learned how, let alone taken the time necessary, to apply the kind of research that would have gotten him better grades in the classroom. Finally, this is a "Kid" we're talking about here. Not all kids, 4-5 star recruits included, are mature enough or even organized enough to consider that aspect. All they know is that one of the most storied programs in the history of the game is after them. They don't have enough experience to give any thought to the possibility of a "down-side" to that school's interest.
My opinion: They owe it to the recruits they covet so, to let them know what's going on and what it all could mean…the good, the bad, and the ugly.
While the lack of such technology in my time may seemingly support your argument, it begs the question: What are all too many kids doing on computers these days? They're not surfing the net (at least not necessarily for the skinny on their top 3 choices as where they should play football), they're playing Halo. When they're not on-line playing games, they've got their Wii fired up and shooting skeet or playing golf. (You can even cut buildings in half with a chain saw, for crying out loud.) Besides, based upon another thread Kevin posted a while back, some of these kids will be too busy cleaning up their e-mail "in-boxes" to have time to do much else.
Now, I didn't say all kids have this problem; I didn't even say the majority of them have it. However, I would not be at all surprised to hear that a few recruits somehow managed to allow some rather important details slip through the cracks before making that all important decision. I don't see that as being far fetched, despite today's technological advantages.
But yeah, based on myself and my friends, I could definitely see that happening to some recruits
This is a very interesting piece from an interesting perspective, WEA.
But here's my opinion on this matter:
If the recruit would be upset that Alabama "hid" this information from him, he should have been one to investigate on his own. Everyone knew Alabama was going to be in some sort of mess with the NCAA because of the textbook violations. That part wasn't a secret. If the recruits feared a possible disadvantage by choosing Alabama because of possible sanctions, they should have looked further into it.
If Saban and other coaches/university officials lied about the later hearing date to the recruits, then yes - it was wrong of them. But if the recruits did not ask for further information, why would they bring it up? ...
"Oh by the way, before you commit or sign with us, we have a hearing date with the NCAA 16 days after NSD! Just wanted to let you know in case you would rather sign with Tennessee, LSU or any other SEC school! Please feel free to change your mind because we might receive a little punishment from our friends up there in Indianapolis. Wouldn't want you coming here knowing that the verdict of our case could maybe, possibly affect you in some way. Just lookin' out for you!"
Nahh. I don't think any of the recruits will have a big problem with this. Whatever the penalty will be, it will affect future classes moreso than this one.
But that's just my lil ol' opinion. ;)
He's not friend of Bama, at least from the Boo$ters eyes...
They have competitors.
Isn't it the job of the competition to enlighten recruits to potential downfalls of Alabama, especially one like an impending NCAA verdict?
If these kids were persued by 6-12 schools, where were the other 5-11 schools? Why did they not point out this little wrinkle? Is "Our institution is not being investigated by the NCAA" not a marketing tool?
GO GATORS!!
'....If the Tide manipulated the dates to get beyond National Signing Day, I believe that would be a moral failure...".
This reads like a TE hit piece.
1st: "Caveat Emptor" is THE rule in recruiting--not just the market place;
2nd: The NCAA TOLD BAMA what would happen if they didn't respond within a certain timeframe (i.e.--you will be rewarded...); They would have been STUPID not to take advantage of that "consequence";
3rd: Bama's job is to look out for Bama; the NCAA's, is to protect the integrity of the process. When the "protector" tells you that the only consequence you will face for failing to meet a deadline, is to be REWARDED--that's on the NCAA, NOT BAMA for taking advantage of it;
4th: Bama is bracing for a kick in the shins by the NCAA; so they are in a position of having to mitigate the damages as much as possible--which means, load up the cupboard this season, because the harvest should be thin in the coming years--that's basic survival.
Finally: You're basically calling Bama out for not arguing against themselves; to fault Bama for this is to confess the grossest ignorance about the ways of the world--especially, the cutthroat world of CFB recruiting.
Life 101: You look out for your own; there will NEVER be a shortage of extrinsic forces out to destroy you and/or yours.
GO GATORS!!
I'll put it this way. I subscribe to Caveat Emptor, but if it was me personally pulling the strings, I might have done it a different way.
What really bothers me is that no one appreciates my Stewie Griffin reference in the middle of the piece.
Had to look up Stewie Griffin; personally, I can't stand The Family Guy. Never suffered a full episode, though I have watched the occassional snipet. The only thing I can say about it, is that it has consistently lost me as a viewer within about 25 seconds, max.
I guess I just don't get it.
GO GATORS!!
TG, we certainly have that in common. Talk about a guy who neither realizes nor deserves the great wife he has... (I know; it's only a cartoon; suffice it to say the few times I let myself watch it, it pushed all the wrong buttons.)
Since it is guaranteed to offend someone, I just take the episodes that don't hit me and toss the ones that do...
Sorry I couldn't tell that your voice was getting higher.
I agree with the above statement completely.
"They would have been STUPID not to take advantage of that "consequence";"
Maybe, maybe not so much now that all the details are out in the open. A stiffer penalty is expected, and warranted.
Hell yeah they did.......
Can you blame them for doing so on moral grounds?
Hell no, morals in college football would have to exist first.
TampaGator had it right. It's not Bama's job to do anything but look out for the best interest of Bama. Just because they didn't take the gun and shoot themselves in the foot doesn't mean they're not going to get what's eventually coming to them. That would be like expecting a guy on death row to off himself before his time is up.
This is clearly on the Barney Fife like shoulders of the NCAA. And like Ben said, where the hell was the proper vetting being initiated by competing schools?
That they got caught giving $20,000.00 to a OL recruit who switched to Ole Miss when Fluker signed, and had to stop trying to get it back after they got threatened...
I wish the Red Elaphant Club would cease being protected by Mike Slive and his "Call the SEC Office before you Call the NCAA (at which point, I'll sweep it under the rug)" act...
Your day is coming, and if the Private Investigator in Gadsden City doesn't get the NCAA to move on it, he's going to turn it over to the media...
The fellas I know who know those REC members are sh!tting in their britches over it...
...right between the latest virus warning about the superworm that will eat your hard drive in 3 seconds flat, then proceed to empty your fridge and plant crab grass in your lawn...
...and the one from the Barrister of the deceased multi-Billionaire who died intestate in Nigeria, leaving no ascertainable heirs--you know the one--the guy seeking a strawman to accept a mere 30% of the decedent's multi-Billion $$$ estate, in order to avoid the estate escheating to Nigera (because, you know, no one will man up to admit being related to the guy, and suffering the cruel fate of inheriting said multi-Billions of $$$)...and all you've got to do, is provide your banking info, SSN, DOB, credit card...
That's where you'll find the one about red elephants, espionage, and the Secret Society of the Crimson Mafia, conspiring to undermine LSU's FB program.
GO GATORS!!
Plant crab grass in your yard. That's just hateful to Floridians...
