Fanblogs Open Conference Championship Thread
In a typical year Tech and Utah would be seen as near equal, yet Utah would be seen as in the running for the MWC title and Tech for a left over bowl spot in the Big 12.
The irony that Tech is really the type of BCS team I should hate more, yet I don't, is not lost on me.
BOOMER!
Will it happen again???

Nice win yesterday, btw. It appears somebody at A&M forgot to tell the Sooners about the vaunted Kyle Field...lol.

I agree.
How do you figure that? Although Michigan State has a bye week and Penn State has Indiana coming up, they still have to play against each other and that game is in Happy Valley. Penn State is still sitting quite firmly in the driver's seat. If OSU wins out (a very good possibility with Illinois and Michigan on the schedule) and MSU beats PSU, guess what? OSU and MSU are tied, and OSU blew them out 45-7 at their place.
If PSU beats Indiana and MSU, a very likely scenario, it's all over, even if OSU wins out due to head-to-head results.
What's glaringly obvious to me is with The Juiceman and Benn, Illinois lost to Western Michigan, and Michigan got beat by Toledo this year.
So, let's keep things in proper perspective, shall we?
I certainly hope Michigan will be much better next year. I think you're mistaking my optimism for the Buckeyes chances this year as a hope that Michigan will never be a force to reckon with again. On the contrary, a strong Michigan program and a strong OSU program fuels the rivalry and is great for college football.
If OSU doesn't bring their A game to either game it'll definitely be a struggle.
GO BUCKS!!!
I can play that what-if game, too. Your team was getting spanked. The score was much closer than the game really was, due to Tressel letting off the accelerator late in the game.
Then both teams got throttled in the bowl games, so it seems they weren't actually the #1 and #2 teams that year.
You're out of your mind. Illinois had control of last year's game throughout, so OSU didn't "grind clock". And yes, "grinding clock" and "letting off the throttle" are one and the same. Again, you were 2 scores down very late in '06 and had no chance of winning. Luck had nothing to do with it. That's the bottom line.
I agree. It was definitely a game in which, no matter who won, will be a classic and will be talked about for a long, long time.
Penn State is still the most likely to win, then Ohio State, then Michigan State. Michigan State's odds are now higher than they werre last week and a three way tie can not happen.
Georgia Tech was exposed by UNC. Not for having a one-dimensional offense, but rather for being a very young, mistake-prone team. The Jackets looked yesterday very much like I would have imagined them looking from the beginning of this season. If it weren't for all the parity/weakness in the ACC this season, GT would have more than three losses at this point.
Matthew Stafford continues to impress me with his maturity and leadership. Without him, the dawgs lose to Kentucky yesterday. He kept his team focused during a relentless Wildcat attack throughout the game.
Florida's first team (offsense, defense, + special teams) is the best in the country. USC has comparable talent yet looked anemic against Cal. Florida's second team is a pretty big drop-off in talent from the first team.
My thanks to LSU and Bama for providing one of the most entertaining games of this season. My hats off to Bama for coming up with the win in a tough environment and against a determined team.
With that said, I have to admit, we are and were overrated. I can't believe, our special teams, and our defense. Coach Richt gave examples of FSU losing to Miami opening day costing them the National Championship, and how our players needed to stay grounded. We have way too many holes to even think that we had a shot. We've got a great coach, wouldn't even think of replacing him, but I think we still have a glaring blind spots. I hope that Richt is still learning his craft and we will improve and not have anymore suprises.
I wish I were more optimistic about the UGA/GT game. I'd have to put my money on UGA in that game. Wish we weren't looking at 8 straight losses in this series, but I don't see it playing out any other way. Next year looks like a possible win for GT, depending largely on the NFL aspirations of UGA's skill players.
1. Alabama, 2. Texas Tech, 3. Texas, 4. Florida, 5. Oklahoma, 6. Penn State, 7. USC, 8. Utah, 9. Ohio State, 10. Boise State, 11. Oklahoma State, 12. Georgia, 13. Missouri, 14. Michigan State, 15. Brigham Young.
We both missed Ball State and I missed Michigan State, though I had said they could be in the mix.
- FSU defeats UF, who beats Alabama in the SECCG. Neither UF or UA get slotted in NCG.
- Auburn/Miss St defeats UA, who beats UF in SECCG... and neither get the NCG.
If it can't be my team going for the shot....I gotta pull for the other SEC boys to make it. I'm thinking Florida would represent us the best at this point, with the way they're playing.

GT: I really thought you had bama. Your guys played really hard. It is a shame your QB played the way he did, Still good game though.
Wait.
What if Alabama and Florida both lose and Missouri upsets whoever and two big 12 south teams are #1 and #2, but neither are the champion Missouri? I think the Big 12 champion gets left out in that case, as the #1 vs #2 is listed above the championship rule, and only two teams from any conference are eligible.
Tyler: It was a great game to watch. It kept us on the edge of our seats. There was some hard hitting going on and when we blocked the field goal attempt at the end to send it to overtime, I was 90% sure we would win, based on the Tide's ineffective kicking game. We just needed to put points on the board in OT, but Stagger Lee would rather roll out and try to fit the ball in between two defenders who had excellent coverage on our WR. Another bone head decision. When he sets his feet, he makes nice throws. Alot of zip on the ball, fairlly accurate. But 85% of the time, he's going off his back foot or trying to throw on the run. If he can hang around for two more years, I think he'll be dangerous...in a good way. It's just gonna be alot of suffering between now and then.

Anyway, here's to MS St or AU beating Bama and then Florida just crushing them in the SEC championship game. That way if the DAWGS hold on and win out (very questionable after what I saw yesterday), we get an invite to the Sugar as the only other SEC team in the Top 12.
GO DAWGS!!
*Texas Tech is the number one team in the nation. Their performance last night solidifies this. And if Stoops wants to do anything about this, he will realize he needs to play a 3-2-6. blitzing the linebackers when necessary.
*Florida is better than Alabama. I was not impressed with Bamas performance one bit. Even though that game had alot of intangibles they are still the #1 team in the nation and should have won by a larger margin.
*OSU is the best team in the Big Ten. They impressed me with a big win over Northwestern, That is how you put away a team.
*Michigan has finally done it! Rich Rod won a rivalry game. Good job boys. 2 weeks!
*Biggest surprise-Wyoming over Tennessee
*Biggest upset- Western Michigan over Illinois
If SEC speed is a myth in your book, then I'm guessing the Spell Check program available on many computers is one, as well...
This scenario, that scenario...
I know this is a comment that has been hashed out by many, loved by us that want change, and hated by those that are traditionalists....but DAMN....
PLAYOFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is the only sport that does guesswork on it's champion, and unfortunately the one that I love the most. Guess it's like loving a chick who cheats on you, tells you that she is & you still accept it...
Oh well.... Come on home, baby!!!!
