Fanblogs Open Conference Championship Thread
I mean, c'mon Lane!
He's a marked man...and I just heard SEC Commission Mike Slive reprimanded him over the comments...
Kiffin is in way over his head.
Wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy over...
The rules of the game say you get three timeouts per half in case you didn't know. First one was burned in the third quarter with a failed coach's challenge. Florida had two timeouts left and used them, perfectly legal. Even Mark Richt said it....Florida was playing a game & playing to win. No other coach does it differently. Unless you're Shannon from the U and just bitter about losing the game.
Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin has been on the job for two months and has already fanned the flames of the school's rivalry with Florida.
By David Jones, Florida Today
GAINESVILLE — New Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin didn't wait long to fuel already growing bad blood with Florida coach Urban Meyer. Speaking to a sellout crowd of close to 1,000 in Knoxville on Thursday morning, Kiffin accused Meyer of a recruiting violation involving cellphone calls to Pahokee wide receiver Nu'Keese Richardson while he was visiting Knoxville.
But Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley responded by saying Meyer didn't do anything wrong, after checking with SEC officials. He also demanded an apology from Kiffin. He said the Vols' coach "slandered" Meyer. An NCAA official has also confirmed that Meyer did not violate any rules.
The SEC commissioner Mike Slive issued a public reprimand to Kiffin for his comments.
"Coach Kiffin has violated the Southeastern Conference Code of Ethics," Slive said. "SEC Bylaw 10.5.1 clearly states that coaches and administrators shall refrain from directed public criticism of other member institutions, their staffs or players."
"The phone call to which Coach Kiffin referred to in his public comments is not a violation of SEC or NCAA rules. We expect our coaches to have an understanding and knowledge of conference and NCAA rules."
Kiffin did apologize after his comments raised such a strong response from his rival and his conference.
"At an energetic breakfast with some of our donors and alumni I made a statement that was solely meant to excite the crowd," Kiffin said in a statement. "If I offended anyone at the University of Florida, including Mr. Foley and Urban Meyer, I sincerely apologize. That was not my intention."
Earlier in the day, Kiffin claimed Meyer was calling Richardson, who ended up signing with the Volunteers, while he was visiting Tennessee.
"I'm going to turn Florida in right now in front of you," Kiffin told the crowd. "As Nu'Keese was here on campus his phone keeps ringing. So one of our coaches who is sitting in a meeting with him, says, 'Who's that?' He looks at the phone and says, 'Urban Meyer.'"
Then Kiffin, who also lashed out at Alabama during the event, took a deeper shot.
"Just so you know when a recruit is on another campus you can't call him," Kiffin told the audience. "But I love the fact that Urban had to cheat and still didn't get him."
The crowd roared in laughter.
Of the Crimson Tide, Kiffin added: "Nick Saban (Alabama's coach) should have started his press conference (Wednesday) by saying, 'Our great class that we signed. .. I'd really like to thank Lance (Thompson) because Lance signed eight of those guys.'"
Thompson helped 'Bama recruit its current class before joining Kiffin's Vols staff.
Seems the Boy Wonder dun grab'd a tiger (or three) by the tail, and even his Daddy ain't up to the task of saving him from his own pre-pubescent immaturity!
I called this when they hired him; he's a f$%#n KID! A CHILD!!
...zits 'n all.....
L'nMFAO!!!! HAHAHAHAHHA!!!!
Monte: No disrespect intended, and my condolences in advance--we'll miss you dearly, here in Tampa--but bidniz is bidniz....and the Gators are gonna' take care of some serious bidniz, come 3rd Saturday in Septermber!!
Oh, I can't wait...
GO GATORS!!
Glad to see you're back off your meds. THAT was funny!
I think even Dennis Miller would have had difficulty in crafting that opening sentence. Pure genius...
"MY SPECIAL PURPOSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!MY SPECIAL PURPOSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!WHAT'S HAPPENING TO MY SPECIAL PURPOSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Any of you who've taken the time to watch that comedic gem of a film understand that...The rest of you should go out and broaden your horizons...
I'm telling you, folks...It's a veritable Cinematic Triumph...
I am somewhat annoyed with Lane Kiffen myself right now. I think that he might have walked into that job alot more humble than he has. He's done some good things, put together a pretty good staff, and enjoyed a little success in his 1st recruiting venture. But, his bravado, reminds me much more of "the child whistling in the dark".
The problem is: he hasn't won one single football game in the SEC. He in fact has "zero" (count them) wins as a college football head coach. He had dayum few wins in the NFL. Now, he may yet turn out pretty good. But for now, he's making himself look like a complete jerk-off, for trying to step up onto the "Big Stage" before he's earned the right to even be in the same auditorium as some of the more established SEC coaches. I particularly disdain a guy that is riding on Pete Carroll's coattails, been handed everything for exactly doing that, and then wants to pretend that he is somehow on the same footing as SEC coaches who have "earned their spurs". Right now, he is becoming an embarrasment, to the people who have taught him his craft. He ought to tone it down some, win some games, and show some gratitude for the good fortune that he has been given.
Great, he's picking up right where Fulmer left off. Always trying to cover up your own problems with trying to turn people in.
Another interesting fact, Tennessee plays both Florida and Alabama on the road this year. I'm sure Gainesville and Tuscaloosa will be welcoming him with open arms...
He wants to join Danny Weurrffel in ministry. Danny opened up a school in New Orleans within the inner city known as the Desire Street Academy. Faith-based teaching curriculum that was thriving prior to Katrina/Rita.
They were pulling kids off the street and turning their lives around. We've got a few kids who they literally pulled off the corner of the projects and turned into contributing members of society. I'm talking about kids who not only got athletic scholarships to places all around the SEC & the South, but also academic scholarships, as well.
Tebow saw this after meeting him, and realizing they shared a very deep faith in Christianity. The word is, Tebow's said he wants to join together with him and really "take it to another level" with Desire Street and Danny's Ministry.
Danny's advice to Tebow was/is to sign for as much money as possible up front, and to take some endorsement deals, and live off of them, and then retire off the first contract, and use that signing bonus & contract money to plant the seed.
It seems that Danny told him that he has to spend more time raising money because he didn't make enough money in the NFL to support his Ministry the way he wants to. He doesn't get enough time actually doing what he loves.
Just what I've heard from a few folks. I'm sure the Gator fans here could tell you more.
The guy's an honest to goodness hero for Judeo Christianity, and he's a great example. You want to hate him...like you hate BC, you want to hate him...
But, he's a guy that busts your azz for 60 minutes, and then gets up and ministers in prison & helps the downtrodden and practices the faith that he preaches, daily...24/7, 365...
I've probably never felt better than admitting that Tim Tebow's my hero...
Touche, WEF...
I love it when a new comer comes in & and starts ruffling some feathers.
Kiffen convinced a kid to lie to a newspaper and to UF coaches about his commitment.
Kiffen falsely accused Meyer of a recruiting violation, for which he was reprimanded by the SEC and forced to apologize to Meyer or face a fine for ethics violations.
Kiffen trashed the kid's hometown of Pahokee and his high school in bragging about his "theft" of this recruit.
Nope, I'm pretty sure you're the only one hoping for a TN win. I'm also guessing you're the only one believing it could happen.
And I suppose that college recruiting is a highly emotional high pressure thing where you lose if you don't test your limitis I can see the the whole environment easy to get worked up over.
Correct me if I'm wrong. That's not an NCAA violation, but it is considered dirty pool, right? Tim is very vocal about his faith. Has he or Urban ever heard of "The Golden Tool", err, ah, I mean Rule?
These kids switch their commitments all the time and I'd be upset if Urban DID stop recruiting him.
Nothing is final until the ink hits the paper.
Also, given Urban's record for both recruiting and winning championships, your theory that he "has been concerned about his recruiting abilities" is pretty dumb.
"Sarcasm", huh? Dude, you need to clue the rest of us in. I didn't detect one scintilla of sarcasm in your post, just braggadocio. If you really want to convey sarcasm, try using the winking emoticon or using adverbs like "always" and "never" written in all caps. For instance...
Lane Kiffen NEVER talks out of his arse.
Lane Kiffen ALWAYS treats other coaches with the respect they are due.
...that way, we will KNOW you are being sarcastic.
Now, onto your comment that Meyer "was trying to steal one of our hard commits". Exactly how is it that one can "steal" a commit who has not signed an LOI? The NCAA has so many rules regarding recruitment, don't you think they have rules against stealing? Of course they do, and they all go into effect once the letter of intent is signed. Before that, it's not stealing, it's recruiting.
Heh, heh. You said 'arse', you bloody limey...
BTW, I was not trying to defend Kiffen, I just happened to see the article about Meyer and one of VT's recruits, and thought it was pertinent to the discussion.
As I originally posted, I know it's not an NCAA violation, but I seem to remember reading a year or two ago that most coaches generally don't heavily pursue another schools hard commits. I know, at least part of that is not wanting to waste the effort if there is little chance of landing the guy.
And you are right, I used the word "steal" in error; should have used "snake" as I did in the original post. You can't steal something from someone if they don't own it (like your wife and girlfriend, unless of course there is a pimp involved).
Also, until Meyer started making googly eyes at our recruit because his current stud receiver was leaving him for bigger and better things and Urban was afraid he wouldn’t have anyone to spoon with on Sunday morning, the only thing I had against him was that he coached for one of the three “Axis of Evil” Florida schools.
Check your timeline, Bobb. According to the article you linked, Beamer's recruit was called 3 days after the BCS-NC game. Meyer found out about Richardson commiting to Tennessee on national LOI day - more than a month later. Meyer had "googly eyes" for this recruit long before he knew about Richardson switching his commitment. If you are going to malign Urban Meyer, you should get your facts straight.
Besides, Meyer got his "stud receiver" - his name is Andre DeBose and he is a much stronger prospect than Richardson, so Meyer did just fine and Beamer got to keep his spooning partner (where on earth did you get THAT from?).
"Bigger and better things" - I'm gonna need a ruling from the judges on this one. [BEEEEEEEEP]. Just as I thought - if you think TN is "bigger and better" than UF at this point, you don't know shee-ott about NCAA football.
None of this really matters, though. Coaches will stop recruiting star players the instant they believe they no longer have a chance at signing them. You can call Meyer a "snake", a "thief", a "spooner" - whatever other nasty name you can dream up, Bobb. It doesn't change the fact that ANY coach will continue calling a recruit as long as he thinks there's a chance.
Regarding my wife/girlfriend, I learned long ago that you can't build a wall around the things you love and hope that nobody ever looks at them. There's an old saying about "if you love something, set it free..." and I'm guessing you're either familiar with it or you can find it on your own. I've found it better to build strong relationships and trust the people I care about to be loyal to me, even when I'm not looking.
Funny, that's a pretty good metaphor for college football recruiting.
Second, I think relationships are a good metaphor for college football recruiting too, that's why I originally used it (thank you for the compliment). That's also where the "spooning" talk came in, a continuation of the metaphor. Guess neither FL nor GT taught you how to read between the lines? Can you only interpret literal sentences? No interpretive abilities? (I’m an engineer, so if you are a Ramblin’ Wreck from Tech, you can’t use that as an excuse.)
And regarding wives and girlfriends, I’m with you. Like I said, unless there is a pimp involved (OK even if there is a pimp involved), there is no ownership. But, just because you trust your lady, doesn’t mean another guy hitting on them isn’t going to annoy you.
However, I do see what you're saying now regarding Urban Meyer. Pity your most recent post never mentioned "NFL" or "Percy Harvin", so I was left to infer your meaning as "NuKeese Richardson" and "Tennessee" (you know, the subject of this particular blog thread?). Anyway, my bad for skipping fom your original post back to the topic of this thread. Perhaps GT never taught me how to read between the lines, but they did teach me to write clearly (that makes one of us).
Still not sure how you lept to "spooning", but if you are having homosexual daydreams about football players and coaches cuddling each other, that's cool with me, just don't invite me to any of your parties.
"Pimp" is such an ugly word - I prefer "social secretary".
BTW, here’s a hint – you see how comments on this site are offset, some more than others? Well, the different offsets can give you a clue about the specific topic of a given comment. Generally, comments that are more offset refer more closely to the closest comment above that is just one space to the left. I’m sorry, I’m probably not explaining this very well. I just picked up on it myself. It just seems so obvious, I’m not sure how to actually explain it. Can ANYONE help me out here? Sorry I’m not writing clearly enough for you. What will it take, down to a 6th grade reading comprehension level?
Oh, and by your next comment, sounds like you’re the one with the homosexual fantasies.
Anyway, we've gotten WAY off topic and exceedingly personal on this thread. (Yes, I know what offsets are and thanks very much for the explanation.) Your initial point of suggesting it was "dirty pool" for Urban Meyer to "snake" a VT recruit is naive. But don't listen to me, try reading the linked article, or better yet, find ANYONE on this site who agrees with you on this subject (and no, I don't mean someone with a grudge against UF or Urban Meyer). Has anyone chimed into this debate to agree with you? If you can show me a coach who backs off a potential recruit before LOI day, I'll show you a coach with a losing record.
...stealing committed players is part of the game...
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/a...
...besides, I really don't get why you're complaining about this. Beamer got his recruit, so you just sound bitter about nothing. If anyone should be mad, it's Meyer who lost two "commited" recuits to Tennessee, but I don't see him whining about this. I'm a Gator fan and I'm not whining about it either. Why so harsh, Bobb?

Wish I could have seen Stevie Ray Vaughn there, back in the day.
The latest band to gain some recognition from this area is Randy Rogers
Band-sounds alot like Steve Earle, prior to that couple of years ago it was Los Lonely Boys. I really like the Joel Hoffman Band- twin telecasters hard core Texas honky tonk.
When visiting Austin, I usually stay in the Marriott right next to the capitol building and don't bother renting a car, so traffic isn't really an issue for me. Being walking distance from the capitol and a short cab ride from 6th Street is a good spot for me.
We used to go up into Austin in the 70's & 80's quite a bit, but now parking & Traffic are real issues, not to mention the 50 + miles.
San Marcos is pretty laid back and alot closer, there are several live music venues and a wide rage of stuff.
The whole Gruene area has really changed, its kinda touristy or something now, last band we heard there was Seth James kid plays a mean slide guitar. They still have alot of touring bands play there like Leon Russell, Steve Earle & Buddy Guy, its still the same old place just more crowded and expensive, even Ole Willie plays there on occassion.
Adios Tomcat
