Fanblogs.com: Spread Eagle II: Auburn hires Tulsa's Malzahn

  • 1Tomcat · 11 months ago
Wow Sounds like the Tigers have it going on now- Malzahn as OC
    Is Chizik his own DC?
Kinda surprized WEA didn't author this thread

    Future OC for Texas ??
  • Porcine · 11 months ago
Yeah Texas can't get enough of them.
  • 1Tomcat · 11 months ago
Na Ron unfortunatley Brown & Davis are a package deal- joined at the hip, upon Davis's departure look for Applewhite to take the OC job at UT.
BTW dont see any coaching changes happening at UT
  • Porcine · 11 months ago
Yet Arkansas fans were crazy for wanting a high school guy to run the offense. Oh what fools we were.
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 11 months ago
Funny how that worked out, huh?

Coaches have to make the leap somehow...
  • Porcine · 11 months ago
    It was a round-a-bout trade wasn't it/
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 11 months ago

Wow! I never knew of that pop culture reference until now. You made me go read all the wiki entries, too. Thanks, guys!

The things you learn on this blog...

I e-mailed WEA when I heard about this...He must be out of pocket...

I think this has got to restore the faith of a lot of Auburn fans.

Between Chizik, Malzahn, & Willis, they have some top flight coaches, teachers, and recruiters...

The Auburn/Ole Miss game just got a helluva lot more interesting, though...
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 11 months ago
    Anyone say Wild Tiger Offense?

You know that little direct hike trickery is pervasive when I saw the Atlanta Falcons run it yesterday...

The down side about this hire is that Mitch Mustain is transfering to us next year...

Actually, it sounds good, but remember that Troy had huge offensive numbers under Tony Franklin, so it still remains to be seen if the spread can transfer to Auburn successfully.
  • OU_Ron · 11 months ago
Could you imagine Leach/Malzahn working together on the same sideline, the Ref's would have to fly helicopters to officiate a game....
  • fosterkeats · 11 months ago
They still don't have the players to run this "spread" or whatever... It's basically the same packages as Tony Franklin's...

Why will it work now??? Tulsa was already running a very similar offense when Gus got there...

Good Luck wiith all that, Auburn...
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 11 months ago
They probably didn't have the players at Tulsa to run it, but run it they did...

Don't worry. I share your skepticism that it can be implemented at Auburn...

At least Malzahn still believes in running the ball--something you doubly have to do at Auburn...
  • 1Tomcat · 11 months ago
Do What? Dont have the players? All I ever hear about is the SEC speed and the outstanding SEC recruits- Shoot didn't you know that?
Auburn is in the SEC #1 football conference with all the #1 players in the country
heck man were you been? talk to BC ,TE or half a dozen Fla fans
If they have a multi dimentional QB who can read and throw-no problem
Lord knows they have an O-Line,Running backs & receivers, now they have the coaches and most successful schemes in the game- They just need support from the fan base and a great QB

They'll have a coach who won't let his assistants sabotage a guy trying to implement it, that's for damn sure.

They'll have-as a staff-a dedication to the concept of the offense, and the philosophy. Which was not the case with Tuberville and his entrenched, tenured staff.
  • 1Tomcat · 11 months ago
TE I totally agree, complete commitment from everybody is essential for the programs success. The full dedication from everybody from AD down to the waterboy- not to mention the guys selling popcorn-everybody means just that.
The fans and alums should be positive and welcome the change, because Gene's job is a very difficult task and he's going to need alot of positive support in order to implement his program successfully.
  • AUtigerman · 11 months ago
    TE

Im pleasently surprised by the hire. I really felt they were leaning towards Pat Nix.
To hire Willis was a stroke of genius too. He does need to help Malzahn and allow him to bring in some help. Guess its a good thing we need several more offensive coaches.
  • Clemson_Joe · 11 months ago
This was a great hire, IMO. It will be interesting to see this offense evolve. On the bright side, it really can't go anywhere but up.
  • AUtigerman · 11 months ago
not true we were ranked only 118 out of 120 in one or two catagories.... :)
  • dawgfan · 11 months ago
As much as I hate to say this, I think this is a really good hire for the war tiger plainsmens.
  • U.of S.C.1978 · 11 months ago
Looks like there might be a method to Jay Jacobs madness after all.

Tommy Tuberville has one losing season and loses to Alabama for the first time in 7 years and he is "forced to resign". What the heck is that all about? Even their cross state rivals allowed their countries 3 years of losing to Auburn before they were axed. Auburn fans have this bloated expectation for the relevancy and the quality of their program. How many SEC Championships has Auburn won since the SEC Championship game was introduced in 1992? 1? 2? How many have they even played in? Anytime a Univ in a major conference like the SEC fires a coach that has been there long enough to establish relationships with high school coaches in the state the, expectation for immediate success have to be taken with a realistic approach. One more thins Auburn Fans, STOP LETTING Bobby Lowther get involved in your program, he is the poisoned apple from the tree of life from the garden of Eden. GIVE Chizik a chance. To be honest he is probably the best quality coach Auburn could have gotten seeing the unreasonable expectiations their fanbase and alumni have placed on that job. Good luck and godbless. Looks like Alabama will be padding that rivalry lead for the foreseeable future.

ROLL TIDE!!!! (though I attended neither school)

    "(though I attended neither school)"

I think we can all figure that out.
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 11 months ago
Studies show that only 3.78% of Alabama fans ever matriculated in Tuscaloosa...
  • The_Observer · 11 months ago
    Sounds about right.
  • Ramblin' Gator · 11 months ago
The spread offense will never work against SEC defenses.

    /sarcasm
  • Porcine · 11 months ago
    Sure thing Frank.
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 11 months ago
I wonder if Mean Gene can use Pat Nix around to coach QBs or something?
  • Tom_Blogical · 11 months ago
Hmmm...the HC hire everybody thought was the worst Auburn could've made is already getting...dare I say...PRAISE...for hiring Malzahn as OC? Say it isn't so.

How quickly the momentum has shifted in this episode of...As The Tiger Turns.
  • berkmar58 · 11 months ago
These guys will never learn, look what happen this year you tryed to run the spread with a power-I roster and now this will set them back another two to three years, until you get the right personel in , and with bama, uga, ole miss, florida, and you know les miles will have lsu back next year, the pressure is on to win now and not in two or three years. Auburn needs to be auburn and play physical ole fashion tiger football and stop trying to be what they are not.
  • TigerEducated · 11 months ago
I think you need to keep on clinging to your guns and religion...

When Moo U is hiring a Spread Offense coach, then you know-as Bob Dylan sang-the times, they are a changin'...
