He is, at best, a position coach. As a coordinator or head coach he has proven nothing (I take that back, he's proven he can't do it). Baylor gave him more than enough opportunity with 4 years to try his system. Morriss didn't do a lot better, but Briles is proving it can be done.

Re: Steele leaving Alabama to be Clemson DC

Hey, if Monte Kiffin can take orders from his kid at Tennessee, then why not? :)

Re: Steele leaving Alabama to be Clemson DC

These are the posts I truly love seeing you make here on Fanblogs. The ones where you run yourself up a 300 foot tree, sawing every branch off on your way up...

I mean, you are like fashion trends. Pop music. The seasons. Haley's Comet. Given enough time, you come back around. Just as willing as ever to be a glutton for punishment in the name of expressing yourself.

I really do appreciate your willingness. I do.

Funny you should mention the way Saban took over a 3-8 program from 1999. His first year, he went 8-4, and in his 2nd year at LSU, he actually did worse than he did at Alabama, going 10-3.

So, you guys won 7 games the year before (I believe, might be off there) and 7 Nick's 1st year, and 12 the 2nd. With a by all means more talented team than what he inherited at LSU.

Only difference being, he won the West & his first Conference Championship. With much less talent and much stiffer competition (Fulmer, Spurrier, Tuberville) than what he faced this year-AT LEAST IF WE ARE TO BELIEVE BC, that is...LOL!

How does that work? I mean, is LSU just plain old better than Alabama? Is it easier to take a crappy team and win championships with it in Baton Rouge than Tuscaloosa? Are/were we a better program?

You see what you get yourself into making silly statements you haven't thought through? They end up making your program and your coach look pretty bad. Not to mention you, but we already know you don't care how dumb you look here. Back to the point of the post, though...

When I am talking about "disappointment", I'm talking about individual games. I thought I made that clear by naming each specific instance. Maybe your hair helmet isn't allowing any logic to penetrate. I think it was probably a problem long before you got that cool coif, though.

You see, I'm able to express my disappointment in terms of individual games, which is what I was doing. You're-once again, and predictably-painting with a broad brush, trying to misconstrue meaning in order to make your point.

But, if you think for an instant any LSU fan was sold on Saban in 2000 after a loss to a garbage Watson Brown coached UAB team by a 13-10 final score, you're dumb.

Wait...We've already established that. But, you know what I mean, so we'll move on, anyway.

In 2001, you're damned right that I was disappointed when we lost to Ole Miss at home on national TV in a night game by a 35-24 score. We lost our only opportunity to beat Eli in Tiger Stadium, and we seemingly gave up our shot to go to Atlanta with our 3rd conference loss after putting a nice winning streak together after some tough early losses to Tennessee & Florida.

That team went on to win out, get some help, and then surmount an against all odds obstacle course win against the Vols in the SEC Championship Game where we lost both our starting quarterback (Rohan Davey), and our starting running back (LaBrandon Toefield, who set an LSU record with 19 touchdowns that year) to injury in the 1st quarter.

But, if you don't think I wasn't disappointed with how terrible a gameplan Saban threw at Ole Miss that year, you're stu...wait...sorry...We've already covered that ground. My bad.

In 2003, it was rather difficult for me to foresee that we'd win Waterford Crystal later that year after a devastating 19-7 home loss to a true freshman in Chris Leak in which they dinked and dunked their way down the field using the back out of the backfield, the sit down underneath route, and the no huddle offense (SOUND LIKE A FAMILIAR GAMEPLAN, BC? LOL!)...

I was not disappointed after the win over Oklahoma, but we took our foot off the gas pedal after going up 21-7, and we let OU creep back into things to make a game of it late. That had Saban's fingerprints ALL OVER IT.

But, I'm digressing. I sometimes worry about doing that, but I always indulge myself when you digitally flatulate in front of us all here, thinking me-of all people-won't call you out for it.

As for the inclusion of politics into the discussion, spare me. I'm a Registered Independent, and trying to twist this into something its not is so unbelievably Lennie Collins-esque, its laughable.

You remember what happened to Lennie, don't you?

Oh, wait...That's right, Mr. Nihilist Flock Of Seagulls himself doesn't care/doesn't post to get a gold star/doesn't kiss contributor butt/insert shopworn joke here...

I do believe you ended your little political comparison with a talk about "getting a feeling"...I've got a few feelings when I compare and contrast the those two (Miles & Saban, not Barack & George W.).

No, it's not a feeling in my bowels. That's the feeling most here get when you start posting.

No, I get the feeling that one coach goes 12-2 and wins not only his division, but a conference & a national championship.

I get the feeling that the other goes 12-2 and wins the Western Division Championship, and somehow goes on a losing streak during that season.

I get the feeling that the 2nd coach goes 12-2, wins the West, goes on a 2 game schneid to end the year, and doesn't have a conference title or even a bowl game win to show for it.

I get those feelings. I'm sure everyone else here gets those feelings. I'm sure you "feel me" on those feelings, too.

They're all warm & fuzzy ones, Gump.

xoxoxox,

-TE-

Re: Steele leaving Alabama to be Clemson DC

If Clemson keeps getting former Alabama coaches they may become a powerhouse in football.

:-)

I would like to see something good happen in Death Valley.

Re: Steele leaving Alabama to be Clemson DC

"Steele's new deal at Clemson will be "competitive with the $360,000" he made with the Crimson Tide, "

This is absurd. Saban makes $4 M, and his "Assosiate HC" or DC makes less than 10% of that? This looks like a smart move, not to mention good fit for Clemson, all the way around. Now, can he take orders from a young, passionate, and tanacious HC?

Re: Steele leaving Alabama to be Clemson DC

Fact is that the Spread kills and the B-12 has some teams that utilize the spread
Steel is a good guy, however when he coached at BU 4 years his best season was 3-8
He went against
Texas 0-4
Texas Tech 0-4
Texas A&M 0-4
Oklahoma 0-4
Oklahoma State 0-4
Missu 0-2
Nebraska 0-2
Colo 0-2
KSU 0-2
He might be a great DC and recruiter, but he couldnt stop the offenses in the B-12
BU has got to be a tough place to coach and compete- Guy Morris had success in the SEC at KY but his best year at BU was 5-6. I was not aware of the death of his son. That's very unfortunate, and I'm sure, difficult to deal with. He is a fantastic coach, and he deserves to ride off into the sunset on his own terms, just like the man he's so loyal to.

I took it to mean that he might leave for another school. I didn't take into account retirement. I guess my brain hasn't been fully awaken yet.

Re: Steele leaving Alabama to be Clemson DC

He nearly retired last season following the death of his son. He went on the record as saying how close he was to not coming back. This season has also been difficult for M.A. He's very loyal to BB, but there are complications. For example, at what point does JF get to hire his own staff? There are internal and external pressures at work. I think MA is an outstanding coach (and I recognize that the Gates think he's dirty). He's had a great career and deserves to make his own decision when the time comes.

Re: Steele leaving Alabama to be Clemson DC

To pasture...

Re: Steele leaving Alabama to be Clemson DC

Whoa, really?
