When he was alive, you wouldn't believe some of the cards he had from the 40's & 50's, many of them rookie cards. They got passed on to a member of the family. Anyway, I for one know precisely how his son feels.

Re: Stoops, Meyer turned down Notre Dame... this year?

Notre Dame earns suprising win over Hawaii

That headline would be priceless.

Re: Stoops, Meyer turned down Notre Dame... this year?

The author must be a fantasy football pool type as the timeline is total fantasy for sure. ND did not have any interest whatsoever in Kelly. As to Meyer and Stoops being contacted - again - pure fantasy however plausible. All factors considered - the contract payout to CW along with having to pay a similar or higher salary to induce a guy like Saban, Meyer or Stoops would not have been prudent. You can bet - Starbrick spoke confidentially with a blend of gurus as to the chances that CW would turn things on a dime next season. If those conversations had come out negative - CW would have been gone. Just as important in the decision - had they decided to dump CW - if they did not get a Meyer or similar - they would probably lose most if not all of their 2009 recruits and the program would be set back yet another few years most likely. ND was stuck with CW at least one more season - good decision for now. CW turns things around and he wins 10 next season and the bad vibes will begin to fade - if he beats USC and gets a BCS bowl - they may yet move forward with his steps towards canonization and he FINALLY would deemed worthy of his salary. IMHO - the Irish will surprise many with a solid win over UH in the bowl 37-17 and 2009 is set in motion to a top 15 finish.

Re: Stoops, Meyer turned down Notre Dame... this year?

These "Notre Dame/Urban Meyer-with-nothing-to-substantiate-them" posts around here are becoming very...oh, what's the word...boring. That's 3 in less than 2 months now. I could understand the first one, but it's really old hat now.

Last time I checked, Fanblogs is definitely on the Internet. And there aren't any answers here either.

Y-A-W-N.

Re: Stoops, Meyer turned down Notre Dame... this year?

This story can't be true. Even though he's catholic he's not going to Notre Dame, just like he didn't go to Cleveland or Ohio State because that's his home state. He was actually a Sooner fan when he was a kid, so much so he painted his shoes silver like Joe Washington. He's at his dream job and the fan base is treating him well.

Re: Stoops, Meyer turned down Notre Dame... this year?

Baugh helped put the old SWC on the map. Grantland Rice covered a game between SMU & TCU in which Baugh through 44 passes in an era when teams didn't throw that many over the course of an entire season. He was one of the games greats.

Re: Stoops, Meyer turned down Notre Dame... this year?

Hey, wats go'n on? Four (Count Em!), not one, not two, but FOUR HC's turn down ND. I'm not at all surprised Stoops did. I'm kinda surprised, given recent threads, that Meyer did. I'm shocked as all get out that Kelly did (He's got the Blarney blood and all that.). Strange as it may sound, I'm thinking Petersen has his eyes on some place else (That, or he has a sickening fetish for Smurf Blue.)

I guess some guys just can't take the pressure of running a football program at that special little school in S. Bend. (Anyone ever heard of St. Mary's?) Not to mention, looks like Weiss gets a 1-year reprieve at ND. Peachy!!!

Re: Stoops, Meyer turned down Notre Dame... this year?

We interrupt (hijack) this thread to announce the passing of TCU All American & NFL great, "Sling'n" Sammy Baugh. Sammy Baugh passed away Wednesday night at the Fisher County Hospital in Rotan, TX.

He was known as being one of the greatest QB's of his time having lead TCU to a 29-7-3 record, including victories in both Cotton & Sugar Bowls.

As Washington Redskin, #33 (the only Redskins' # currently retired) was a 3-way player. As QB he led the Redskins to 4 divisional titles & 2 NFL titles. He threw 187 career TD's (Redskins' team record) against only 31 career INT's. He also holds the Redskins' team record for highest single season completion percentage (70.3).

As a DB/S/LB, he was the only NFL player to have passed for 4 TD's & intercepted 4 TD's in the same game. As a punter on special teams, his 1940 season average of 51.4 yds/punt remains an NFL record.

As a human being, he was said to have been much more than just a successful football player. He was a successful rancher; the hard-working, hands-on kind, as opposed to those who stood and watched as others did his work for him. And apparently, he was a good father. He was the last surviving member of the 1963 inaugural class of the Pro-Football Hall of Fame. He will be missed.
