Fanblogs.com: Tennessee to face N.C. State in 2012 Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game

  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 5 months ago
Somewhere, Auburn AD Jeff Jacobs continues to sit on his ass...

This 'pre-season' game is rapidly gaining a lot of attention. How much longer before the imitators appear, and can they produce as intriguing a matchup?
  • Bama_Babe · 5 months ago
It's ok, WEA. At least Clemson is on the 2010 schedule. Granted, it's not the big "Daytona", but it could be worse...You could have Ole Miss's 2009 non-conference schedule.

Surely Jacobs will understand the significance of a game like this soon enough. I bet he won't decline the offer if given a second time...

But the problem is, the Cows of Chick-fil-a probably aren't over the reject they received by the Tigers of Auburn just yet. Give it time. I'm sure they'll find each other one of these days.

I've gotta give you kudos on that picture. Very cool, BB.

Can't you just see one of those Coors Light Coach Commercials featuring Bama Babe?
  • Zac · 5 months ago
Something tells me she'd do a better job. With that winning smile, Coors couldn't help but sell lots of beer...sweet, sweet, beeeeeer...
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 5 months ago
I really don't understand how all the other teams in the SEC can stand by and let Alabama turn this into their game. Wusses like Jacobs are only facilitating such.

    Eat mor elEfant!

Kansas & G Tech are going to have a home & home series starting in 2010
More teams ought to do these kind of OOC games- This will be the first time the Yellowjackets have faced a B-12 team since 93 at that was against Baylor.
  • Bama_Babe · 5 months ago
Wait. What?? Alabama isn't playing in the 2012 game? I was sure they were about to change the game's name from "Chick-fil-A College Kickoff" to "Who wants to play Alabama?"

    Darn...

Oh, and we'll see if Kiffin lasts long enough to make his 4th season debut in Atlanta. Hmm...
  • Clemson_Joe · 5 months ago
Is it just me, or is this matchup a little strange?

This game should just be called the ACC vs. SEC Chick-fil-a Kickoff Classic.
  • WarEagleFan · 5 months ago
You could say that but they just tried to get Auburn to play UCLA in that game so maybe that's not a good name.
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 5 months ago
That game was going to be in the Ga Dome. I'm not quite sure why they decided to skew away from the SEC/ACC matchup, but I would have welcomed it. The only SEC team to play PAC-10 teams on a semi-regular basis is Tennessee.
  • Bama_Babe · 5 months ago
Yeah, but then Auburn declined and UCLA ran away because they didn't want to play Georgia Tech in their backyard...

I've heard news that the big guys in charge of these matchups want to eventually reach outside the Southeast to teams like Michigan, Texas, Ohio State, etc.

Think USC would come over to play an SEC team?
They did come play AU earlier this decade.

Think of the hype THAT would create!

Ohh, I can see it now....

Top SEC team plays USC (or insert Texas, Oklahoma..)
Winner goes on to finish undefeated.
    Loser also wins out.
No other team in the country goes undefeated.
    They are ranked 1 & 2.
    Both win their repective conference.
But wait! Team 2 lost to Team 1 already! We can't have a rematch as the NC game, says the BCS.
    What happens??

    OHH THE CONTROVERSY!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, just had a *Crystal Ball* moment...
  • WarEagleFan · 5 months ago
Didn't know about the Georgia Tech deal that would have been a good game. I really like seeing the wishbone that PJ runs after only hearing about it from all the old timers.

On a side note just wondering what your dad thinks of you being a Bammer? Since he's a tried and true "blue and orange tigger"!

    Thats when Utah comes in-

Not sure I would want to see the Midwest teams at the Chick-Fil-A in Atlanta. It would be more interesting to me to have it be a Southeast kickoff event to college football. I'm cool with the ACC playing the SEC in this one or maybe even invite a Big East team if you'd like. I'd prefer the Midwest come up with a kickoff classic of their own and stage it in any one of the large cities we have up here. It shouldn't have to be bowl affiliated and God knows the economic windfall would be a welcome addition. The weather would be good and wrapping it around the holiday weekend would give people the time to travel. Obviously I would say Big Televen versus Big 12 but no reason to have to set any boundaries to that.
  • Zac · 5 months ago
Tell ya what, Josh, when the Big Televen eventually adds that 12th team, a season opening kickoff classic between the Big XII & the Big Twelve will have a whole new meaning. Talk about fanning the flames, yeee-ha!!!
  • Clemson_Joe · 5 months ago
That, my man, is an absolutely fantastic idea, and I can't wait to see it happen.
  • Zac · 5 months ago
When you get to be my age, you may call them sinior moments.
  • fosterkeats · 5 months ago
This game is a pillow fight...

FYI: I just saw Mark Richt & Paul Johnson at the grocery store buying some cheese to go along with alll their WHINE that'll come from this game like all the others... If they're so paranoid about Alabama & Clemson & Tennessee & Va Tech coming in and "stealing" their recruits, they should sign up to play...

If NC St wins this one, who do ya think Kiffen will blame 1st, O'Brien for cheating, or his AD for scheduling it in the 1st place?

Now for the more important question:

"I fully expect that in 2012 both of these rising programs will be ranked in the top 20."

Well, Mr. Gary, while I like the match-up, what if you're wrong? True, NC St has come along, and while they may get "there", they're not there yet. As for TN, you may be asking for a lot of a new coaching staff even in 3 years. Besides, the Vols haven't exactly been a boon of consistency of late, having sandwiched a 9-4 & 10-4 seasons between two 5-win seasons within which they lost to Vandy & WY (not exactly the way I wanted to see Fulmer go out).

What's wierd about this TENN/NCSU matchup is (IMHO) the fact that the two schools had already agreed to play each other in 2012 in Raleigh as part of a home-and-home (the Knoxville date hadn't been set).

Now that the schools have moved the game to a one-night stand in Atlanta, both schools give up the second game. The way the money works out, there MUST be a benefit to doing this and scrapping an already-existing arrangement, but I'm kinda foggy on what it might be. Then again, I just got home from work...

TENN also has a home-and-home with UNC in 2011 (Chapel Hill) and 2012 (Knoxville).

The Vols and Pack have only played twice (1911 & 1939); both games were in Raleigh and they split shutouts, first 13-0 TENN, then 16-0 NCSU.

TENN leads their series with UNC 20-7-1, with all 28 games played between 1908 and 1961.

Geographically, the closest FBS school to TENN is CLEM (107 miles away). Of the 10x geographically closest FBS schools to TENN, six of them are ACC schools (CLEM, GT, WF, VT, UNC, NCSU); only three are SEC schools (UGA, UK, VAND).

TENN is 66-25-4 all-time vs. the ACC, but are only 1-3-1 vs. ACC teams in Altanta.

NCSU is 10-28-2 all-time vs. the SEC, and are 1-1 vs. SEC teams in Atlanta.

...so...why is this all about AUB and BAMA? :-)

Can this game sell out the Ga Dome???

You'd have to get 50k Vol fans to show up, Wolfpack fans don't travel...
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 5 months ago
Yea, they wouldn't travel if a game was in Durham...
  • wufpaxno1 · 2 months ago
Wolfpack fans don't travel well????? What rock have you been hiding under for the past 15 years? Wolfpack Nation has bought out it's allotment of tickets for every bowl they have been invited to in the last 15 years (8 with a record of 5-3), even the Papa John's Bowl last year in Birmingham. The 2002 Gator Bowl, which pitted NC State against "America's" team Notre Dame, was a virtual sea of red. It is more than likely that NC State will bring a bigger crowd then Tennessee to this game. Equal numbers at the very least.
  • fosterkeats · 2 months ago
I don't hide under rocks... To you, 15,000 fans "travel well"???

Alabama brought 40,000 to The Ga Dome this year... there wasn't even that many people TOTAL at the Pizza Bowl last year:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_PapaJohns.com...

    38,582 in a 70,000 capacity stadium, congratulations...

And the Gator Bowl you speak of was the 2002 season, but techincally the 2003 Gator Bowl...

    Yawn...
  • wufpaxno1 · 2 months ago
Wow! I must have hit pretty close to home here as I obviously touched a nerve. My point was that making an assertion about how well NC State would travel without doing the research before hand is venturing an opinion and not stating fact. Then doing limited research after the fact and using one bowl game out of eight to make your comparison still does little to make your case. I hope that this is not how you prepared for exams in college, assuming that you attended college. I was not trying to make a comparison with Alabama or anyone else, so I do not see how that makes a relevant argument. Alabama's football tradition and history are beyond comparison, but I will point out that over the same 15 year period Alabama attended 10 bowls with a 5-5 record, which is comparable with that of NC State, but with a lower winning percentage. And as far as the 2002 season and 2003 Gator Bowl, since Alabama did not play in a bowl in either of those years, it is easy to understand why you were sleeping. Check your facts first and you will not end up looking the fool. ZZZZZZ....

Hearing some strong rumors that LSU will begin its 2010 season against NC State in Atlanta...
  • facebook-1429062693 · 5 months ago
Tennessee should be a top 10 program at that time...
  • Mr2Bits · 5 months ago
Lane Kiffin has lost his mind and oh yea, commited another recruiting violation. This tool needs to escorted out of college football before he ruins the sport.
