Fanblogs.com: Texas to pay Big 12 championship bonuses to coaches

  • thebuckstopshere · 8 months ago
Kev. I'm not defending Texas here, but the whole you weren’t complaining before the season started argument is weak.

If not weak at least unrealistic. Nobody really ever considers these rare scenarios and how they might play out before the season starts. Can you really blame them for not reading the fine print and contemplating all the unknowns?

But I agree they should check themselves before they wreck themselves....

That or go ahead and claim some of the BIG10 championship too....
  • Kevin @ Fanblogs · 8 months ago
Can I really blame them for not reading the fine print? Umm... yeah. Who's job is it to read that stuff? Wasn't Texas sitting there in the room when everyone voted to put this system in place??

The Longhorns have managed to become the fools of the 2009 offseason. It's just sad, really.
  • Bevo_Boy · 8 months ago
I agree that this is taking it way too far, but I also think many of the major programs would do something similar if they were in the same situation. Do you really think Florida would just sit there and accept being left out of the CCG when it meant that they would most likely be put in the NCG?
  • OU_Ron · 8 months ago
I don't think Florida or any other school would do this, to my knowledge, no other school has done it.....it's an embarrassment
  • Kevin @ Fanblogs · 8 months ago
    Agreed.
  • Bevo_Boy · 8 months ago
"no other school has done it.....it's an embarrassment"

When has another school been put in this situation? I seriously doubt that those schools would just sit there and smile as they get passed by a team that they beat because of the way the system works, but that's just my opinion.
  • OU_Ron · 8 months ago
No BB, I think other schools would accept the fact and move on....I guess by your reaction, you would do as Mack does....good luck with it..
  • Bevo_Boy · 7 months ago
I've lost tie-breakers before and it hasn't bothered me that much, but don't forget how much was left completely in the hands of the voters. These players and coaches may never get another shot at the NC. I'd like to say that I would react better than that (I did agree it was taking it too far), but I really can't say for sure until I get put in a situation of that magnitude.
  • Tyler_Tech · 8 months ago
    It was a 3 way-tie. Let's not forget that.
  • thebuckstopshere · 8 months ago
I'm sure Texas was represented when they decided upon the rules. But there would've had to been one hell of a prophet on their payroll to foresee how the current structuring of the rules could leave them feeling shafted. Irresponsible yes, but understandable too.......
  • OU_Ron · 8 months ago
I'll give Mack the benefit of doubt, maybe he didn't know the rules, I honestly think he did, but maybe not.....with that said, he certainly knew the rules after the fact...and that's where it should have ended...sadly, it didn't....Texas is a great University, but it's taken afew black eyes over this..
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 8 months ago
Ignorance is no excuse. Try telling that to a judge when you didn't know you were breaking a law...
  • thebuckstopshere · 8 months ago
Instead of using that analogy I would equate it to opting out of the full coverage when renting a car.......
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 8 months ago
It ain't that rare. They all agreed to the rules of the tiebreaker, so live with it. I'm losing respect for Texas because of this sham...

If you want to pay your coaches bonuses-Okay go ahead
If you want to call it B-12 conf champ bonuses- go ahead
Every season is different and 08 was no exception
Its really cool that two teams Texas & Oklahoma are usually in the top ten nationally. Its pretty cool that they face each other every year in a neutral stadium the the crowd split 50/50- the XII champ game is not as big as the RRS game-its not. .012 % difference between the two teams
Whats really funny is that folks from the outside looking in can't understand.
    A 3 way tie is a 3 way tie
The B-12 south has been a lot tougher than the B-12 north the last several years- not to take anything away from TTech- hey they beat Texas
    Aint nobody whining
I saw the Texas Tech vs A&M game- did yall ? A&M sucked last year and led TTech at the half- I know close dont count, but it showed me that they could be beat
I listened to the TTech vs BU game- wow what a close one BU led until the final minutes was driving the ball- two incompletetions- turned over on downs- TTech wins another real close one- had BU won would Texas have been in the CCG game- probably
I saw the TTech @ OU game and OU whipped TTech
I picked Ole Miss over TTech and I picked UF over OU
Whats really hard for other folks{ fans of the other 118 Div 1-A teams} to understand is that the MNC game was of no importance to us Texas fans.
Cant pull for OU, arch rivals that we dont like- we dont have that pull for them because they are in your conference mentality that the SEC fans have.

Hookem Horns- you cant understand its a Texas thing

Let us not forget Graham played the entire second half fo the baylor game with nine seperate fractures in his hand and Crabtree did not play.Graham later had 17 pins and two plates inserted in his hand......

Are you the Grinch or something? ; )

Isn't a top 5 finish good enough for the staff to meet performance bonuses?

Sure they didn't win the tiebreaker, but it was a pretty darn good season.
  • OU_Ron · 8 months ago
Tom, giving a bonus is great, I'm sure they deserved it...Texas had a great year....but the bonus they received was for winning the conference championship......at least disguise it, or at least use an * ;-)
  • TampaGator · 8 months ago
Ok, flying the planes with the banners over the games, the constant whining, perhaps the asterik, are all fair game for calling Texas out; but this one here--bonuses--I have no problem with. We're not talking about huge amounts of money here, and it's helpful in keeping some of the assistants on. I don't see any problems (of course had UTx recievd TARP money, that'd be different...).

IMO, the bonuses were earned de facto; no biggie.

    GO GATORS!!
  • Kevin @ Fanblogs · 8 months ago
I agree with OU_Ron. Pay a bonus, but don't put out a release saying that you're paying Big XII Championship bonuses. That's just ASStriskie.
  • Tyler_Tech · 8 months ago
How much of a bonus do they get when they actually win a real title? NOt an * title? :/
  • TampaGator · 8 months ago
    Kev:

I agree with you, if the point of the bonuses was to continue to pound the championship drum (in otherwords, precisley because it's not that much money, they issue the bonuses for the purpose of claiming the BXII champ), rather than because they genuinely thought the assistants earned it, and they wanted to give them incentive to stick around.

I'm just not quite sold though, that the incidental benefit was the primary motive.

    GO GATORS!!
  • OU_Ron · 8 months ago
TG, here is the incentive to stick around.......above and beyond the bonus..

They're paying Muschamp $900K!? The Longhorn defense wasn't even that good.

I guess that's the price they have to pay him so he won't leave and take a head coaching job that he may or may not even have success with.
  • USC1801 · 8 months ago
I think you may have missed his point. . . bonuses are fine but they should not be designated as "championship" related in this case. It reflects character to take the high road when you are disappointed, but in this day and time posturing has become so accepted that teams resolve to acting like spoiled children when things don't go their way. Like an immature child, they believe that stomping their feet and showing abject disdain will win the day. Those who know better, even their own fans, can see through the charade.

    USC1801:

Point taken; I'll refer you to my reply to Kevin above.

    GO GATORS!!
  • Ben Prather · 8 months ago
Did Georgia Coaches get a bonus in 2007? That was almost exactly the same deal.

    What about Texas Tech coaches?
  • Tyler_Tech · 8 months ago
This is really just sad, especially with the team Texas has coming back. The story of the off season should be talking about Colt shredding Big 12 Defenses for even bigger stats. Instead the offseason of the longhorns is a crying media darling calling a waaammmbulance named Mack Brown. Sad.....
  • WestCoaster · 7 months ago
    Typical Texas.
  • OU_Ron · 7 months ago
    Huskers Gameday has Mack's number...
