Fanblogs.com: The beginning of the end of the Leach era at Tech

  • OU_Ron · 9 months ago
Lose Leach, and Tech will go backwards....way back...back to being fair at best....someone should look at replacing the AD..IMO...
On a side note...I have been in Orlando since Sunday afternoon, probably seem 500 Palm trees and not one coconut on them....seen rows and rows of orange trees and not any of them have oranges much bigger than silver dollars. but there's a lot of em...

I'm not so sure that Tech would fall way back. They are arguably closer to the middle of the Big XII than they are to the top, so... I don't know if they can fall *that* far back.

Regarding Florida, the oranges were harvested in January, so we're really not into citrus season just yet. You can get a lot of strawberries, though, if that's your thing. Regarding palms, there's about 13 major varieties in Florida - only one of which is the Coconut Palm. The big residential varieties are Christmas, Queen, Washingtons, etc.

More importantly - you're in Orlando and didn't call/email. Much suckatude on your part. :)

Sorry about that, landed yesterday about 4pm, waited at the luggage area for an hour and a half before they discovered someone had tripped the emergency stop switch on the conveyor...by the time I got my luggage, I wasn't in much of a mood for anything........as for the palm trees..all I know about them is what I seen on gilligans Island....I sure like the weather though..I haven't seen one tornado since I've been here...

Don't forget we've got a Fanblogs Gator in the neighborhood, too.

As long as it's not the gator living in the neighborhood pond, we're cool...

Totally my neck of the woods. I work in Celebration, which is that 64 exit. Let me know if you can access home/work email and I'll send you my cell.

I like Mike Leach but maybe he already has a job lined up with Donald Trump.

    :-)

They should have known his price would go up after that 60 Minutes interview...

Tejas Technic might have felt a little jilted after that flirtation Leach had with Auburn in December, hence the apparent 'smothering' of him now...

Mike Leach is a bad person. Soon as he leaves Lubbock, I can take another team off my "Hated Teams" list...win for everyone...

First, lets talk about the money. Coaches' salaries are getting ridiculous. They've already gotten past that for the most successful. I like Mike Leach as a coach (save for his being a little challenged defensively), but I don’t like him to the tune of $2.54 M/yr. Yes, he's just produced his best season. Lets not forget it was with a Sr. laden squad, with a Sr. QB, and almost no hope for a back-up. By comparison to last season, Tech's gonna be hurt'n this season. That doesn't mean they won't win 7-9 games, but it does mean it'll be tougher to get there. An 8-5 or 7-6 season wouldn't surprise me. Is that the kind of success Tech's alumni are paying for?

That said, it's not as if Tech can't afford to pay a good coach decent money. What with a $793 M endowment, it's no friggen wonder they could afford Bobby Knight in addition to Mike Leach. (I know; Knight's gone.)

As for the 4 sticking points, both kids in this sandbox need to learn to play fair.

If he gets fired: I don't have a problem with a coach getting $1.5 M for getting fired, even if he didn't deserve it (getting fired that is). If someone guaranteed me $1.5 M, were I to get fired from my job, I guarantee someone with whom I work would have a broken jaw tomorrow.

More buy-out: (At least it's not more cow-bell.) I'll let Bama Nation discuss Mr. Saban's buy-out. For now, my best example is...yes, you guessed it, Rich Rodriguez. He left a $1.8 M/yr salary and a $4 M buy-out (similar declining scale), for $2.5 M/yr and (R U ready for this?) a similar $4 M buy-out. Were Leach to accept TX Tech's proposal, he'd be making more than RR, and have a much lower buy-out. Why complain?

Permission to job hunt: I don't have to do it. There's no basis in law for any company requiring it. I have heard of it being the policy of many companies, not to mention colleges and universities. It is the policy at WVU; it's not negotiable. That said, were I Leach, I'd wanna be able to test other waters and weigh other options freely. One other thing, "...the right to fire him and invoke the buyout penalties...": Sorry Tech, ya can't have it both ways. The purpose of the buy-out is to protect the coach from being fired, or the school from a coach's early exit. If a coach takes another job, he pays his buy-out, or what's left of it. If a school fires a coach, they pay his buy-out, or what's left of it. No one can penalize or get penalized.

Leach-Ware Promotional Money: Don't have enough knowledge of corporate law to argue this one either way. I know that many companies, not to mention colleges & universities, take this stance: If you develop or invent it while in our employ (on company facilities, using company materials, etc.), it belongs to the company. On the other hand, Mike Leach has a right to his name and all that it brings him. On the other hand he made his name at TX Tech; they gave him his 1st (only) Div-1 HC job. On the other hand were it not for him, Tech might not have won 76 our of its last 115 games including 5 out of its last 9 bowls (as in 9 consecutive since his hiring). On the other hand, Leach did it with Tech's facilities and support. One could go on forever. So, I'll let someone else take over from here. This one's given me a headache.

(WarEagle, you & I deffinately should have taken the Bamma job. We could both have been fired into retirement by now. Oh the pain, the pain...)
