STONY BROOK??? YUCK!!!!!!!!!! Villanova, I can see; they actually used to be Div-1. UMass has been playing with making the leap for years; they've got the money and a much bigger student body than BC. But the other two??? NO FAT FRIGGEN WAY. The main campus in Albany sits behind its own version of the Berlin Wall. Stony Brook is a great school, nice campus, but insufficient funds, and a disinterested (perhaps indifferent) student body. Buffalo would be a much better fit here, and they've pulled out of more scheduled games with the Big East than you can shake a stick at.

I'll give you credit for some seriously thinking outta-the-box there, but I'd just as soon you leave my Big East a-loan.

Re: The thought that won't go away.

This is my plan for a BCS Playoff:

ARTICLE I: ATLANTIC COASTAL CONFERENCE

Section I: The divisional alignment for the ACC would remain the same. The Atlantic Division would consist of Florida State, Maryland, North Carolina State, Wake Forest, Boston College and Clemson while the Coastal Division would consist of Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Miami (FL), North Carolina, Virginia and Duke.

Section II: At the end of the year, the top team in each division would play each other in the ACC Championship Game with the winner of that game advancing to the BCS Playoffs as an automatic qualifier for Region I.

ARTICLE II: BIG 12 CONFERENCE

Section I: Two more teams would join the Big 12 Conference so that the Big 12 could now have 12 teams again. Missouri State would leave the Missouri Valley Conference, giving the MVC 8 teams and Jacksonville State would leave the Ohio Valley Conference, giving the OVC 8 teams. They would both make the jump to Division I and join the Big 12.

Section II: The North Division would consist of Missouri, Kansas State, Iowa State, Kansas, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State while the South Division would consist of Baylor, Texas, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Jacksonville State and Missouri State (note: the Oklahoma-Texas rivalry would be kept every year).

Section III: At the end of the year, the top team in each division would play each other in the Big XII Championship Game with the winner of that game advancing to the BCS Playoffs as an automatic qualifier for Region I.

ARTICLE III: BIG EAST CONFERENCE

Section I: Four more teams would join the Big East Conference so that the Big East could now have 12 teams. Stony Brook would leave the Big South, giving the Big South 6 teams, Massachusetts and Villanova would leave the Colonial Athletic Association, leaving the CAA with 10 teams once Old Dominion and Georgia State join, and Albany would leave the Northeast Conference, giving the Northeast Conference 8 teams.

Section II: The divisional alignment for the Big East would go as followed- the North Division would consist of Massachusetts, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Albany, Connecticut and Rutgers while the South Division would consist of Stony Brook, South Florida, Cincinnati, Louisville, West Virginia and Villanova.

Section III: At the end of the year, the top team in each division would play each other in the Big East Championship Game with the winner of that game advancing to the BCS Playoffs as an automatic qualifier for Region I.

ARTICLE IV: BIG TEN CONFERENCE

Section I: The divisional alignment for the Big Ten would remain the same: one division would consist of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue and Wisconsin while the other would consist of Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska and Northwestern.

Section II: At the end of the year, the top team in each division would play each other in the Big Ten Championship Game with the winner of that game advancing to the BCS Playoffs as an automatic qualifier for Region I.

ARTICLE V: PACIFIC 12 CONFERENCE

Section I: The divisional alignment for the Pac-12 would be the same one that is to be announced in the next 2 weeks

Section II: At the end of the year, the top team in each division would play each other in the Pacific 12 Championship Game with the winner of that game advancing to the BCS Playoffs as an automatic qualifier for Region I.

ARTICLE VI: SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE

Section I: The divisional alignment for the Southeastern Conference would remain the same: the East Division would consist of South Carolina, Florida, Vanderbilt, Georgia, Kentucky and Tennessee while the West Division would consist of LSU, Auburn, Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi and Mississippi State.

Section II: At the end of the year, the top team in each division would play each other in the SEC Championship Game with the winner of that game advancing to the BCS Playoffs as an automatic qualifier for Region I.

ARTICLE VII: CONFERENCE USA

Section I: The divisional alignment for Conference USA would remain the same: the East Division would consist of East Carolina, Central Florida, Southern Miss, Marshall, UAB and Memphis while the West Division would consist of SMU, Houston, UTEP, Tulsa, Tulane and Rice

Section II: At the end of the year, the top team in each division would play each other in the Conference USA Championship Game with the winner of that game advancing to the BCS Playoffs as an automatic qualifier.

ARTICLE VIII: INDEPENDENTS

Section I: If an independent finishes with 6 wins, it is eligible to qualify for the BCS Playoffs.

Section II: If an independent finishes with 9 wins, it is an automatic qualifier for the BCS Playoffs.

Section III: If an independent finishes with an undefeated season, it is an automatic qualifier for Region I.

Section IV: Under this new system, every independent must play each other during the season once.

ARTICLE IX: MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE

Section I: A team would be added to the Mid-American Conference to give the conference 14 teams. Appalachian State would leave the Southern Conference, leaving the Southern Conference with 8 teams.

Section II: The divisional alignment would be as followed: the East Division would consist of Buffalo, Temple, Kent State, Akron, Northern Illinois, Ball State and Appalachian State while the West Division would consist of Miami (OH), Ohio, Bowling Green, Toledo, Western Michigan, Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan.

Section III: At the end of the year, the top team in each division would play each other in the MAC Championship Game, with the winner of that game advancing to the BCS Playoffs as an automatic qualifier.

ARTICLE X: MOUNTAIN WEST CONFERENCE

Section I: A team would be added to the Mountain West Conference to give the conference 12 teams. Sam Houston State would leave the Southland Conference, leaving the Southland Conference with 8 teams.

Section II: The divisional alignment would be as followed: the North Division would consist of Boise State, Fresno State, Nevada, UNLV, Wyoming and Colorado State while the South Division would consist of Utah, San Diego State, Air Force, New Mexico, Sam Houston State and TCU.

Section III: At the end of the year, the top team in each division would play each other in the Mountain West Championship Game, with the winner of that game advancing to the BCS Playoffs as an automatic qualifier.

ARTICLE XI: SUN BELT CONFERENCE

Section I: Three teams would be added to the Sun Belt Conference to give the conference 12 teams. Central Arkansas and Stephen F. Austin would leave the Southland Conference, leaving the Southland Conference with 6 teams, and Jacksonville would leave the Pioneer Conference, leaving the Pioneer Conference with 9 teams.

Section II: The division alignment would be as followed: the East Division would consist of Jacksonville, Florida Atlantic, Florida International, Middle Tennessee, Troy and Western Kentucky while the West Division would consist of Arkansas State, Central Arkansas, North Texas, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe and Stephen F. Austin.

Section III: At the end of the year, the top team in each division would play each other in the Sun Belt Championship Game, with the winner of that game advancing to the BCS Playoffs as an automatic qualifier.

ARTICLE XII: WESTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

Section I: Ten teams would be added to the Western Athletic Conference to give the conference 16 teams. San Diego would leave the Pioneer Conference, leaving the Pioneer Conference with 8 teams. Then, the Big Sky Conference would merge with the Western Athletic Conference. All of the teams from the Big Sky Conference would become part of the WAC, which include Montana State, Eastern Washington, Montana, Sacramento State, Northern Arizona, Portland State, Weber State, Northern Colorado and Idaho State.

Section II: The division alignment would be as followed: the North Division would consist of Montana State, Eastern Washington, Montana, Idaho, Portland State, Weber State, Northern Colorado and Idaho State while the South Division would consist of North Arizona, San Diego, Hawaii, Louisiana Tech, Sacramento State, New Mexico, San Jose State and Utah State.

Section III: At the end of the year, the top team in each division would play each other in the WAC Championship Game, with the winner of that game advancing to the BCS Playoffs as an automatic qualifier.

ARTICLE XIII: SEEDING

Section I: A grand total of 24 teams make the BCS Playoffs.

Section II: Eight of the 24 teams get byes in the first round. They are 2 at-larges (can be independent, a conference winner or a conference at-large) and the champions of the ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, SEC and Pac 10. This is called Region I.

Section III: The winners of Conference-USA, Mountain West, Western Athletic, Mid-American and Sun Belt automatically make the playoffs, but don’t automatically make it into Region I unless the BCS Committee elects them.

Section IV: The day after every conference championship game is played, the seeding is announced- 11 conference winners and 13 at-larges qualify for the playoffs.

ARTICLE XIV: FIRST ROUND GAMES

Section I: All games in the first round are played at the site of the while the other 6 games are played on Saturday.

Section V: This would be the playoff schedule:

FRIDAY NIGHT: 12 vs. 21 (8:00)
FRIDAY NIGHT: 14 vs. 19 have made, addition of a 12th game and the recent increases of price in a guarantee game.

All of this is making neutral site games more appealing. I expect to see a far greater number of these BYU-Oklahoma type of games in the future. Cowboy Stadium has indicated it would like to host roughly 10 college games a year, with plans to secure 2 or 3 bowls. That leaves 7 or 8 regular season games, one of which will be the RRSO.

Re: The thought that won't go away.

This was a pity design I had been obsessing about, so I vented it out to get rid of it and finish the alternate post season discussion for this year.

You are right in that only two rivalries are guaranteed to be preserved. With 7 PAC 10 teams in the same round robin elite league this would allow those teams to play 8 of the 9 other teams. You are right that California would lose one of the games with one of the Washington schools, as Stanford would not be lost.

The three teams left behind would be hurting with a 7-3 split, with only 4 conference games maintained, but would still get their share of the revenue distribution for the conference and would have games they should be better able to win, as they are obviously at a low point now. Do good and win their bowl game and they are in the elite league next year.

Re: The thought that won't go away.

Ill post it here.

(wild idea) Conference versus conference duel?

Maybe drop a regular season game and have a December date where all the schools in one conference play all the schools in another conference (i.e. the #1s playing each other for a mega conference championship, the #6s 7s & 8s playing each other for a conference vs conference duel which would have great emotional appeal and maybe built an exciting match at the end of the season for teams having disappointing years where fans have given up interest)

Have the Pac 10 play the Wac, the MWC play the Big 12, the Big Ten play the Big East, the ACC play the SEC.

Well, I know it wouldn't be an exactly fair way to pick 6 of the 8 teams for the NC game as some of the conferences have stronger traditions than others and more teams. Maybe it give the edge for consideration of 2 wild cards though.

It sure would be exciting though.

Re: The thought that won't go away.

(more NC solutions again? : ) ) Washington is going to come back eventually, (they were a topnotch program for so long) Stanford is major West Coast institution, usually able to attract decent talent and certainly fan interest.

There's more to a season than picking out teams for a play-off. Pac ten schools shouldn't ever give up the rivalry of playing the two Washington schools, the two Oregon Schools, The two bay area schools and the Two LA schools...West coast champion. I suppose that Fresno state, San Diego State, Or San Jose state would want to be included in the west coast conference but they really haven't proven themselves consistently and they certainly don't have the Cache of the other schools especially in terms of graduate schools etc. (Well, Washington state gets a bit of a free ride there because they're no top choice for the best high school non-athlete applicants). Maybe drop the Arizona Schools and let them play the Mountain state schools.

The rivalry is more than between football programs, its between Graduates of the colleges that like to see each others boys dual it out for bragging rights etc. We know that USC has the dominant program but that makes the years of upset that much sweeter... even playing them close is satisfying. All the teams in a conference need to play each other every year for a meaningful title too.

Part of what makes college football pleasurable is the alumni ties etc. I just don't have friends, neighbors, relatives, and coworkers who went to Utah or Boise state.

I know you might need more than 8 schools to earn a ticket to an 8 game playoff but CA has 11% of the US population and add WA and OR and you get 1/8 th of the US population living here. I got another idea I might post in open thread.

Re: The thought that won't go away.

TV: So call me now! $5 for the first minute, $2 for each additional minute!
Homer: [dials the number]
Voice: You... have reached... the Coach's...
