Fanblogs.com: Time for the SEC Offices to Move to the ATL?

  • JB · 1 year ago
I agree, i guess i never knew that the offices werent in ATL...never really thought about it. But ATL is the capital of the SEC now that it hosts the SCG every year......and what could possibly be draw in the keeping the office in Birmingham???

In Birmingham they love the governor.

Atlanta makes much more sense to be the home, just like Charlotte makes sense to be the home of the ACC. Although, what makes sense certainly doesn't always matter.

Why spend the extra monies for office space and bulked up salaries due to higher costs for employees? This would lead to extra contributions from member institutions. Think off it as outsourcing/offshoring. I'm cool with Birmingham keeping it's title and the offices. Why anyone would want to try the traffic in Atlanta, baffles me.

True. I would never live there and deal with that horrific traffic. Columbia in the morning is bad enough for me.

    How about prestige, maybe?

Atlanta would just mean increased costs for the league, as UofSC1978 indicated. Plus, Birmingham is roughly the geographical center of the league, whereas Atlanta would give the schools in the eastern division better access to administration at the expense of the western division schools. It's not all about the glamor.

Wow. You know a thread is dead when Lennie Collins won't even comment on it...

Eagle, there's a reason SEC HQ is only 48 miles outside of Tuscaloosa...

Moving them to ATL would be like leaving the cat in the cage with the bird...
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
They could leave the compliance and enforcement department behind perhaps...
  • gatorhippy · 1 year ago
    I suppose...

But then your leaving them susceptible to the temptations of the Red Elephant Club...
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
Which is merely a red herring for having them on double-secret compliance observation. The real office will be down the road in Vance, Alabama, where the Mercedes plant is...

    Ha!

Birmingham is closer to the geographic midpoint of the SEC. If traveling by ground this is the logical location for the offices. What city is driving distance from more SEC schools than Birmingham? This argument remains valid if the commissioners are assumed to use private jets for transportation.

When the league expanded in 1992, every single school in the conference, save Arkansas, had either it's largest or second largest concentration of alumni in Atlanta. I'm sure it's gotten even better in the 16 years hence, so that's the reason the ATL is the one...

It's really strange, but having UGA in such close proximation to Atlanta doesn't bother me as near as much as having Alabama so close to Birmingham... Probably because Georgia hasn't played 400 games in Atlanta over the years...

Atlanta is the most central location for the SEC, it is also the highest market city in the SEC.
  • Bamahammer · 1 year ago
Hey mkrob, of course ATL is the most central location for the SEC, unless of course your school is in Louisanna, Mississippi, Kentucky, Tennessee or Alabama. That's half the league not counting UT and that other south Georgia school Auburn. I'm sure The Plainsmen would love the move. 90% of Tiger alumni move straight to ATL after graduation. BTW where did you learn geography.........Auburn? Pull out the atlas from behind you car seat and look again.
