Fanblogs.com: Tommy Bowden fired at Clemson

  • Ramblin' Gator · 1 year ago
Wow! My congratulations and condolences to Clemson Joe. This will cast a strange light on this Saturday's game with GT.
  • Tigerfan19 · 1 year ago
Thank God... Team has not been playing for BOWDEN for a long time... Just read Their Comments.. Does'nt exactly scream "break my back for you"... Lane Kiffen or Muschamp would be Great.. As a DIEHARD fan been begging for this day for years, great move!!
  • tigerfan19 · 1 year ago
Swinney being named interim says one thing to me... See YA Spence!!! He should have gone with BOwden, His hiring was Bowden's worst Move.
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
I think it invigorates the atmosphere for the game. Death Valley will be intense on Saturday. Tickets are going as we speak.
  • Ramblin' Gator · 1 year ago
This reply is for both CJ and Tigerfan, but I'll just post it once rather than replicate it.

As a Clemson fan (every game except this one!), I hope you're right. My experience on mid-season coaching changes suggests that you might get a temporary, positive bump from the change, but it rarely translates into an immediate victory and seldom translates to a "sea change" for the season.

Back in the 90s, GT fired Bill Lewis the week of homecoming. Apparently, the AD couldn't stand to have all those alumni show up beefing about the football team. Lewis was replaced with George O'Leary, who lost the homecoming game to Wake Forest (if memory serves) back when the Deamon Deacons were terrible. O' Leary went on to have some success as HC, but it was due to the quality of his coordinators (IMO) as his record went south as soon as Ralph Friedgen quit to become the HC at Maryland.

More recently, UF fired the Zooker and the Gators lost to UGA and then came up with an impressive win over FSU. So it's hard for me to say what effect this change will really have, though I'm glad to hear that the fans are reinvigorated. Las Vegas is reflecting this as the opening line for this week's game had GT as 2+ point favorites and now Clemson is favored similarly, so I guess a lot of Clemson fans are pleased with the change and putting their money on the line as a result.
  • GA_Boy · 1 year ago
Yeah, they might actually beat Tech with Bowden gone. All my engineering pals from work are all nervous about it, especially after they spent Saturday in Bobby Dodd watching Gardner Newman take it to them.
Did you really start the waterboy? That's just what they were telling me today.

    GO DAWGS!
  • Ramblin' Gator · 1 year ago
Well, you got me there, GB - "they might actually beat Tech". There's just no questioning your football acumen!
  • Kevin @ Fanblogs · 1 year ago
    Doing this today accomplishes... what?
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
It gives Swinney an opportunity to prove he should lose the interum status?
  • Kevin @ Fanblogs · 1 year ago
    Amen.

Oh, and you forgot cause chaos on your committed recruits.
  • OU_Ron · 1 year ago
Looks like one 5 star recruit has already abandoned ship, according to Clemsons Rival site...
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
    Yeah, Devonte Holloman. See below.
  • Ramblin' Gator · 1 year ago
It demoralizes the fans and the team, so this accomplishes plenty.
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
I think it's done just the opposite, actually.
  • blackdawg · 1 year ago
RG, I'm glad I found you. I know that we threw, (your buddy Stafford) two interceptions in the red zone, and look far from the 10th ranking that we have at the moment, and I know that the Gators stomped LSU, (Contgrats by the way), but my brother-in-law a Tech Grad, meekly shared that GT scored their one touchdown on an 80 yard screen pass and blocked a field goal to avoid overtime against Gardner Webb. What's up with that?
  • Ramblin' Gator · 1 year ago
Dunno, I didn't see the game, just read about it.

So what's up with lord-god Stafford? I thought he was "maturing" and "progressing".
  • blackdawg · 1 year ago
He didn't look too mature Saturday, regressing. No more fades in the endzone, Bobo. The no look screen pass was ugly.

We are not scaring anybody right now, but our fans.
  • Ramblin' Gator · 1 year ago
BTW, in all seriousness, I'm sorry to see how UGA's O-line is doing. Injuries suck and I really hate playing a team decimated by injuries, as it will inevitably diminish the victory or sharpen the loss for my team.
  • blackdawg · 1 year ago
The OL is taking a beating. Vance is a Junior and I'm guessing the knee injury is going to affect his senior year as well, since it occurred in October. We've been pretty lucky in previous seasons though, but this year we're making up for it.
  • TigerEducated · 1 year ago
That Tommy's going to get the first $300,000.00 installment of that buyout on December 12th...

Juuuuuuuuuuuust in time for Christmas shopping!
  • Tom_Blogical · 1 year ago
Dontcha wish you could make that much dough for sucking at your job?
  • Tom_Blogical · 1 year ago

Must be nice to get fired and be set for life.
  • cdogg · 1 year ago
    Good point Kevin...absolutely nothing.
  • "BC" · 1 year ago
well i've noticed that he's been acting like a dead man walking.
and it kinda seemed like everyone in the program knew he would be fired, so there hasn't been a lot of fire from bowden or his team.
i think the team will perform the same, or better without him.
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
    Agreed.
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
Well for one thing it means that Bobby Bowden can beat Clemson this year if they're capable. No more letting his son win to save his job.
  • RazzMaTazz · 1 year ago
It allows Clemson to sign Kiffen and get recruiting?
  • TigerEducated · 1 year ago
Wow...That big win over Clemson is looking like one you can really hold up to the light, huh Bama_Babe?

Clemson Fans...I hear you guys are clamoring for Muschamp...

Be careful what you ask for, gentlemen...
  • The_Observer · 1 year ago
    No teeth.
  • TigerEducated · 1 year ago
He held a clipboard while at LSU, and was the equivalent of Spurrier's OC at UF, only he was DC at LSU.

He went to Auburn, and I hate to say this, there was not much to distinguish his tenure there, either...

Tejas didn't exactly stymie Bradord & OU on Saturday, either...
  • joe1292 · 1 year ago
hahahahaha bout time tommy lean off a spot on the couch daddy will be joining you soon enough jo paaaa will never fall!!!!
  • Kevin @ Fanblogs · 1 year ago
Some of the names being floated on Twitter:

    Lane Kiffen
    Will Muschamp
    Bobby Johnson

I'm surprised no one has mentioned:
    Skip Holtz (ECU)
    Kyle Whittingham - Utah
    David Cutcliffe - Duke
    Turner Gill - Buffalo
    Bronco Mendenhall - BYU
    Mike Leach - Texas Tech
    Mike Price - UTEP
    Frank Solich - Ohio
    George O'Leary - UCF
  • OU_Ron · 1 year ago
LOL. Texas may actually bypass Auburn for their next DC.....
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
    I'd appreciate that...
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
I don't see Whittingham moving east of the rockies. Mendenhall is not likely to go anywhere.
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
I agree. Neither of those are going to happen.
  • blackdawg · 1 year ago
    Congrats, CJ

Walt Deptula the local football guru on 104.9, is saying stay away Muschamp, Bobby Johnson, and Mendenhall. He said at least interview Mark Mangino, who went 12-1 last years and beat Va Tech in the Orange Bowl, also Whittingham who might follow Urban Meyer South. Earlier today they were saying rumors have people in Tenn. talking to Bill Cowher, Clemson's closer to home for him he if is really interested in coaching at the college level. Who knows but I think there are a lot of advantages to axing Tommy now.

I'm betting that Clemson_Joe just left work early, cart-wheeled his way to his car, drove to the nearest pub and bought the house not one, but two rounds of drinks.

I agree with the sentiment of why now? It must have been some incredible pressure on the AD from boosters to make this happen and I doubt it started on Sunday. That, or alot of them read Fanblogs.com and really put alot of stock in Joe's opinion.

There was a tremendous amount of pressure. Petitions galore, withdrawn IPTAY memberships, an exorbitant amount of phone calls and emails, and even visits.

I think this is perfect. I am actually currently drinking up this news along with the equally smooth and satisfying flavor of The One and Only, Newcastle.
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
Well, at least your desire for Clemson not to win any more games this season is still going to become fact, because the one sure way to fire up a team is to fire the head coach...
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
Ah, your incredibly astute prognosticating skills at work again, eh?
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
What's the truth on these harsh words that Harper had for Bowden, "he deserved it"? I'm getting conflicting reports. Some say his dad said something, some say it was in refernce to the other coach getting promoted, some say it's true. What's the word?
  • blackdawg · 1 year ago
The exact quote from the ESPN Article.

Clemson's season started with a big thud, a 24-point loss to then-No. 24 Alabama that senior quarterback Cullen Harper said "really hurt our confidence."
Harper, who was benched after the Tigers' loss to Wake Forest and replaced by highly regarded sophomore Willy Korn, said the program needed to cut ties with Bowden.
"It's what he deserved," Harper said. "Dabo Swinney is a fine man and will do an excellent job."

    http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=364...
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
Ouch! I think that if I was Swinney, I'd let Harper sit on the bench for that one...
  • blackdawg · 1 year ago
This is rumor and Clemson_ Joe may know better than I. But I heard that Tommy annonced to the media that he was benching Harper. Then Harper received a text message saying he was benched. Bowden also called out Harper,(off handedly) for not taken a hit to try to get a first down in an earlier game (he's nursing a bad shoulder).

CJ Spiller didn't seem to upset in the article either, sounded like Tommy was losing the team. Maybe in the next few days other players may back Tommy, it happened with Ray Goff, but right now it doesn't sound like Spiller or Cullen Harper are too upset.
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
That's the same thing that I've heard. James Davis seems to have been upset about Bowden leaving. Mostly though, there seems to be a lot of support for Swinney right now. I, for one, enjoyed his press conference. I hope he does produce as head coach, and earns the job permanently.
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
...and he is. He said in his press conference tonight that he will start Korn. He did tell Harper that he will have the opportunity to win his job back, but that's only if Korn screws up.
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
"I enjoyed playing for coach Bowden and I liked him, but in the end he was yelling at us to be leaders and it wasn't working," running back C.J. Spiller told ESPN's Joe Schad. "He did all he could to motivate us, but guys weren't buying into what he was saying.

"He let the offensive coordinator [Rob Spence] run the show and we got away from me and James [Davis]," Spiller said. "I think part of the problem was when he benched Cullen. Some people wanted the offensive coordinator fired, he fired the quarterback and then he got fired."
  • Tommy_Trojan · 1 year ago
    Clemson_Joe:

I think it's a good move right now. People are gonna talk about recruits being lost. So what! The next coaching regime may not even want those kinda players. They may want players that want to be "a Clemson Tiger".

I don't think that your Administration is the problem. Clearly they have chosen to act now. Bowden was not a "bad hire". He did several good things for a number of years. The program is now going in the wrong direction. The administration clearly see's that. So why did they let him go now?

I hate to be the bringer of "bad news". But, Lane Kiffen is available right now, and won't be there for very long. Your administration is going after Kiffen right now. Why? Great young QB in Willie Korn is the top reason. What does Kiffen bring? Expertise in developing QB's. What else is Kiffen very good at? Recruiting. Kiffen was the "Top Recruiter" at Southern Cal. Kiffen is extremely aggressive. Al Davis didn't like that. But, Kiffen would probably have demanded "good faith". Therefore, Bowden is let go right now. Kiffen could be hired very shortly and be able to rally the recruiting effort almost immediately.

What's in it for Kiffen? Kiffen is a lock for either the Syracuse job (AD is USC alum I believe) or Washington's. Maybe others. Both of those teams would take years to build. At Washington, Kiffen probably would realize, that he can't beat Pete Carroll (can't recruit Los Angeles like USC). Clemson would be the perfect opportunity for Kiffen. The ACC is prime for the taking. There is no "dominate" team in the conference. Although Spurrier has not been able to recruit "up" South Carolina in the tough SEC, Kiffen would feel that he could recruit enough, to rule the ACC. Clemson already has tons of talent on hand, and the transition back to prominence, could be easily done in as little as one year. The "West Coast" offense, although very intricate, is a very appealing recruiting tool for many different kinds of prospects. It utilizes every position in the offense.

I'm not putting a sell of one of "our" guys here. It just makes sense to me, if I were Lane Kiffen, that the Clemson job is on top of the list. And, if I'm the Administration at Clemson, I want my program to become a National power. I think all sides are looking into this as we speak.
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
We actually retained our big time recruiters. Swinney is a better recruiter than Bowden. Napier and Blackwell are still on board as well.

I am warming up to the idea of Kiffin. I trust our administration, and I think they'll make the right decision.
  • Tommy_Trojan · 1 year ago
    Clemson_Joe:

I take it that this guy Spence is the OC? And that he would be expendable, correct? Who are these other guys (Swinney, Napier and Blackwell)? Are there any DC's or defensive people in here. RB coaches? What are they? I'm sure that somebody like Kiffen would be agreeable to keep most of the defensive coaches, obviously the RB coach, etc. He may have problems with the QB coach, WR coach and OC in general. What could Kiffen salvage here? It would be a good idea for anybody to hang around awhile - as Clemson would be getting some offense. Also, they aren't real cheap at Southern Cal, so I would assume that Kiffen will be trying to get more cheese for all those who do stay.
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
The press conference is now. So, things are getting explained now.
    Vic Koenning - current DC
Dabo Swinney - Asst. HC, WR coach under Bowden; interim HC now
Billy Napier - Asst HC, TE coach, Recruiting coordinator under Bowden
David Blackwell - Inside LB coach

Swinney, Napier, and Blackwell have been our hot shots in recruiting. They are young and energetic and they can bring in the solid talent. I can't answer your question fully because I don't know yet what each coach's role is.
  • tiger07 · 1 year ago
Well you can't get much worse than negative total offensive yards half-way through the second quarter against wake. Not exactly the nations top D. Especially with the talent clemson has boasted in Harper, Davis, Spiller, Ford, and Kelly. Clemson needed a huge change and this is not the first time Tommy has botched a season for clemson, just look at ummm, every year he has settled for a little above mediocrity. 9-4 8-5, just enough to keep his job. Way to have kahonas clemson, and good luck. Good luck Korn, bc Harper has lost it. I think Clemson comes out on top with a bowl game.
  • cdogg · 1 year ago
How about Larry Coker next year? Just a thought.
  • TigerEducated · 1 year ago

  • cdogg · 1 year ago
good point....we are still recovering @ Miami from Coker.
  • Dixie · 1 year ago
I hear Mike Leach was in the consideration pool. And for all you posters here wondering just what the firing accomplished: Lots. Considering that many of the players themselves have said right out it was time for Bowden to go, not to mention long-time ticket holders and university supporters. Now. If we could just get rid of Spence. I can't, for the life of me, figure out why he wasn't given the pink slip along with Tommy's. Seriously. He's the reason Clemson lost to Maryland.
  • Bev · 1 year ago
Bring Hoke and his offensive wizard (dubbed by the players)---anyone that can put Ball State in the top 25 has got to be good----who knows what he can do with recruiting at a place like Clemson if he did it at Ball State.
  • "BC" · 1 year ago
these are the best coaches Auburn/Clemson could hope for, and this would be my list in order:

    Lane Kiffin
    Butch Davis
    Will Muschamp
    Bronco Mendenhall
    Jim Leavitt
Kevin Steele (wildcard, nick saban said he's more ready to be a head coach than any assistant he's worked with, he has NFL experience, he's worked under bobby bowden and nick saban, and he's a great defensive mind (defensive minded head coaches are usually the best))
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
BC, do you think Saban might move to the east side of the state if we offered him Tuberville type money? You know, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em?
  • bamaboy990 · 1 year ago
Auburn wouldnt pay saban a qaurter of what we pay him and dont expect tuby to pull another win out of his ass against us. There is a new sherrif in town
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
Of course we wouldn't. We'd only want to pay him what he was worth...

Hmmm.... New Sherrif in town. Seems that I've heard that before in here somewhere...
  • "BC" · 1 year ago
look WEA. take off those blaze orange glasses for a second, and let me give you a little dose of reality.
Tommy Tuberville is a good coach.
Tommy Tuberville is = Houston Nutt, in that he usually wins at least one big game a year, and does a lot with the talent he has.
but look. the best tuberville has done in all of the years of having little to no in-state competition, is ONE sec championship. in alabama's worst decade.
now, alabama arguably has the best coach in the country, and has a tremendous buzz surrounding its program.
Tuberville may win this year. he may win next year. who knows?
but the bottom line is that Alabama has a better team than Auburn for the first time in a long time, and Alabama is only gonna get better.
nobody knows about tuberville. he's not a name you see in the news. he's not a household name in the southeast. and that's fine when you're recruiting against mike shula, but what in-state blue-chipper is gonna choose the name Tuberville over Saban??
well there hasnt been one yet.
Auburn is crashing and burning, Alabama is actually legitimately back.
in Alabama's worst nightmare we could fall to 9-3, but really, do you see that happening? Alabama usually only comes apart after their first loss. and last year, it took a stacked georgia team OT to hand us our first loss. but alabama never loses its first game to a team that's worse (ole miss, tennessee, arkansas state). alabama might drop one to lsu. we won't lose to msu. and let's say you're right and Tubby pulls off the shocker in T-town.
    10-2

auburn will be lucky to go to any bowl this year besides the iron one.
so who wins recruiting in 2010?
    Alabama.

    who wins recruiting in 2009?
Alabama is winning by a landslide as we speak

    who won recruiting in 2008?
    Alabama by a landslide

and despite what you, and other Auburn fans may claim, according to Rivals.com, this is the first year alabama has more talent than auburn.

    don't you see???
Tuberville couldnt win a NC with no Alabama.
how's he ever gonna do it with Nick saban down the road??
unless that's not what you auburn fans want.....
and personally, i dont see tuberville ever winning the SEC with Saban at alabama.

Auburn needs HYPE. Lane Kiffin would land y'all the SI cover, ESPN coverage, etc.
that's what y'all need. a new, improved, Auburn 2.0 is the image y'all need (part of why tuberville wanted the spread) to attract recruits.

Tuberville will never give you that. UNLESS.
tuberville survives this season somehow, he hires another spread offensive coordinator, cleans out his whole offensive staff, and tells the new OC to assemble a team of coaches. and tuberville concentrates on defense (y'alls bread and butter).

and even all of that wouldnt be as good as Lane Kiffin with a good DC.

that's how i see the current state of auburn.
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
I noticed that you didn't totally paint yourself into a corner and left the possibility of you losing the Iron Bowl. Hmmm... I was hoping for you to let out a little more rope. TE has taught you well about not reaching, eh?

So you really think Tubs is gone? Most Bama fans I know want him to stay so they can enact some payback...

So you definitely subscribe to the zero-sum idea that one of the two teams in the state can't be winning unless the other is losing (other than the actual game itself?) And since Alabama's stock is on the rise, Auburn's must fall?

Alabama has whipped Auburn in recruiting for DECADES, yet here we are still, nipping at your heels, just as we always have. I'm glad that there's a national championship in recruiting now. It gives a team two goals to strive for...

Yes, if we could only grab a SI cover.... Say beating an undefeated #1 ranked historic rival at their house? Actually, I think you guys would get the cover story on that one again...
  • clemson1981 · 1 year ago
This is 10 years in waiting!! I thank the good lord above right now haha. But in all reality, Bowden just never quite fit in with Clemson, and really has never been a fan favorite. I live about 10 miles from the University and the rumors are that the following are the top canidates:

    Bobby Johnson
Will Muschamp (who I do not want)
    Dabo Swinny
    Chris Peterson

Those guys are all great choices, I prefer Johnson only because he is a Clemson guy, and Peterson would do great with Korn as his QB and Harper as his RB. Eitehr way I am happy.

And for all of the people who think and ask "Why Now?" I will tell you Why Now? Because IPTAY over the past 3 years has seen membership go down down down every year, and trust me when IPTAY speaks TDP listens and so does the Athletic Department as a whole. You will not find many Clemson fans who arent rejoicing over this right now. Great call, perfect timing, and it gets fans back into a season that many thought was lost (and still is) just last Thursday. The fan base is now energized and ready to see how the team does in the post-Bowden era.

    GOO TIGERS!
  • TigerEducated · 1 year ago
I think Chris Peterson is an EXCELLENT choice...
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
Well, as most of you know, I'd be lying if I said that I'm not ecstatic about this. I can now return to my alma mater and gladly pay to see a football game! Though many of you may not understand it or agree with it, this is exactly what we wanted. We think that Swinney could be a great coach, and by doing this now, we are giving him the opportunity to seize the job. We have already lost recruits. The way that I see it though, you're going to lose a couple of recruits any time that you make a coaching change. If these boys, not young men yet, are too foolish to see that this change was made to benefit the future of the program, and theirs as well if they choose to be a part of it, then happy trails, lads.

One thing that has not been mentioned here yet, is that Rob Spence has been fired as well. I really do believe that Bowden's refusal to make a change with Spence is ultimately the reason for the end of his tenure at Clemson. The play calling should change tremendously at this point. Death Valley will be absolutely electric on Saturday. Instead of fans showing up worried what kind of a failure they might have paid to witness, now the Clemson Nation can show up unified in support and excitement.

As you may recall, immediately after the final whistle of the Wake Forest game, I bid Bowden farewell. I should have known it would wait until Monday, but that was certainly the last straw. I have had the pleasure of knowing Tommy Bowden and he is a wonderful man and I wish him all the best in the future. I truly hope that he is able to find a position that makes him happy. Of course, at this point, he could choose to retire as his time at Clemson has certainly made him a wealthy man.

Now, on to the future. Swinney, Johnson, Kiffin, and Petersen are on the short list. Muschamp seems to be there as well, but I'm not sure why really. I hope and expect Clemson to give Swinney the full opportunity to hold the job, and not do like Nebraska did with Bo Pelini the first time around. If he is not kept as a head coach, I'd like to see him retained as an OC at the least. One thing's for sure, I've not been this excited about a Clemson decision in a long time.

Now I have to scramble to get my tickets to the Georgia Tech game...

    Clemson Joe:

I've been hearing talk about Tommy Tuberville, Cowher, etc, too but I agree with you on Swinney. I'd like to see him get a shot at the job. Clemson needs a coach who can relate to their fan base as well as recruit and coach. I"m not sure some of the names thrown around (except Johnson) would fit the ethos of the university.

By the way, I took your "best of luck to both" (in reference to the USC/LSU and Clemson/GT games) to mean USC and Clemson, NOT LSU!!! I'm sure I was right! LOL

    Go Gamecocks!!
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
I don't want Tuberville and I think most Clemson folks are with me on this. The Cowher thing is pure speculation and I don't think it even is worth mentioning. It is only a rumor. There are plenty of qualified guys out there right now. There's also the possibility of Auburn, Tennessee, Washington, Virginia, and Syracuse will be looking, so it could be quite competitive. It is certainly going to be an interesting search.
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
Terry Don Phillips has said repeatedly that Bowden was not fired, and that he is the one that proposed it. He has also stated that he "doesn't believe in mid season firings". Take it however you'd like to.

Yeah overall rumors are Cowher wants back in the NFL, I can see him in Detroit or something like that. Wyche is becoming a senator, or trying to haha so hes out of the question. I think Swinney deserves the shot. Plus hes a Bama grad.....you know who else was a Bama grad? Danny Ford. But anyways:

    Joe:
I am sure you are familiar with Walt Deptula on 104.9 he suggested Mark Mangino, now I personally think that is a horrible idea. I do like Muschamp, Bobby Johnson, Dabo, and Peterson. Right now it looks like Dabo could have an upper hand if he can rally these Tigers to some wins in the final half of the year. EX: if Dabo gets a win this weekend (and I think he will, considering he will be making the play calls, because it's official Spence has been fired) so Swinney beats GT, FSU, and Carolina he's the next Head Coach no problem, and no question but we shall see in time, TDP will make the right call, hes the same guy that hired Les Miles at Okie State, and then Mike Gundy. And look how that turned out for those two......
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
If Swinney can win those, or somehow win out, then there won't be a coaching search. I am excited about the game on Saturday now.
  • clemson1981 · 1 year ago
I got my tickets on Saturday when I realized Bowden was on the outs. I don't think Korn is going to get the start like Bowden said, I think Cullen get's the start and comes out and shows what he has, but Korn will get snaps, so will Harper, and the run game will finally be used the way it should be.
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
I agree. That's exactly what I am thinking. If it is run that way, I think this offense can have some great success. We will see. This is uncharted territory.
  • Clemson Rebel · 1 year ago
I hear that Bobby Bentley at Presbyterian is avaliable and would take the Tigers forward.
  • clemson1981 · 1 year ago
Bentley is better suited in the high school ranks. Why he ever left Brynes is a total guess, but no way should he be at Clemson and in no way shape or from is he ready for that big of a job. Let him develop PC turn them into a great team (I am sure he will) and he will be getting calls in a few years. But he still should go back to high school.....maybe Gaffney? haha
  • Deez · 1 year ago
My 2 cents on Bowden: He brought a breath of fresh air to the play book. Does anyone remember the Ken Hatfield and the Tommy West years? My undergrad years--i suffered through the Tommy West years. That meant pitching the ball to the back and watch him run it into the pile at least 2 out of the 3 downs. BORING football. effective? questionable, exciting to watch? absolutely not. run the ball, take some time off the clock. My grad years at Clemson I got 2 years of home games under the Bowden era. We were passing the ball.....we were passing the ball. i couldn't believe it! and trick plays?! unheard of. Remember GT in 2001??? 4th and 13? We had a beautiful pass play that would have probably been a lamed out run play under any other coach we've had.
say what you want. bowden did bring some good things to the field. sure no championship yeah yeah, but for what we had, i enjoyed it. Good luck to Bowden wherever he ends up. thanks for bring some long yardage and exciting plays to the Valley.
  • Big Dog · 1 year ago
Clemson is a great school with bad major sports due to the low life South Carolina fan base that couldn't get through high school much less college. Maybe the downturn in the economy and the layoffs at the mill will help put a higher grade of intelligent fans in the seats for the rest of the season.

  • Ur_Drunk_Uncle · 1 year ago
Add another 90% to that Joe. The man had his time and didn't perform in a weak ACC. On top of that, if you read, the players quit on him as we saw on the field. Case closed. Bring on the new blood.

...said the guy whose [OTHER] team canned Larry Coker a mere 5 years removed from a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!

Seriously, why is it ok for Miami to can Coker who won 1.9 national championships in 6 years, but it's somehow disgraceful for Clemson to can Bowden, after 9 years and ZERO ACC c'ships (let alone NC's)? Seems we've been through this before.

    GO GATORS!!

Update above: TDP says Bowden resigned, but Bobby says he was canned.
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
Either way, what Bobby said, "I've talked to our kids about that - that's the way this profession works. There ain't but one answer and that's winning.", is exactly right and 3-3 (1-3 really) isn't winning.

Foster: Would be a great hire....till Beamer retires
Graham: Good hire as well.....but I get a TB feeling from him
    Johnson: Perfect Hire!!!
Leach:Once he stops playing cupcakes call me and we will talk
Kelly: Good guy, great coach, not for Clemson
Leavitt:Wow what a great hir this would be, but no way is he leaving his baby at USF
Moore: Has a national title team, loves Boone, and would never leave
Muschamp:If we want him we better go after him because he will be getting calls soon
Patterson:Just not a good fit, he belongs at Texas A & M or a Big 12 school in general
Strong:One of my favorite coaches in the country, but he is best in the SEC
Venables and Wilson:If they are anything like Stoops other guys who are coaching, keep them away from Clemson.

You are living in a dream world! You got lucky in 1981 and you think that is who you really are? Give it up. Tommy got you basically 8 wins a year. Next coach will not duplicate that success. Take a look at your geography and what kid is coming to Clemson when they can go to Athens, Atlanta, Knoxville and now Chapel Hill. Get real.
  • clemson1981 · 1 year ago
I like the name Bud Foster.....I don't think it's realistic but it be a good hire.
  • RazzMaTazz · 1 year ago
Clemson's new interim coach, Dabo Swinney (not the AD), fired the incompetent OC, Rob Spence. Dabo also said that redshirt freshman QB, Willy Korn, will start against GT. Both of those things make me respect Dabo even more.
    http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=364...

Ironically, if Bowden has simply hired a great OC (or hadn't stood by the incompetent Spence), Clemson probably would have won at least one ACC title, and Bowden would still have his job.

Bowden obviously didn't volutarily resign. I'm sure that the AD said do you want to be fired or would you rather save face and resign?

I'd like to see Clemson hire Chris Peterson or Jim Grobe-- although if Clemson wins out, maybe Dabo deserves it. Either way, I would hate to see Clemson lose Dabo Swinney. Whoever the new coach is, they will fire the O-line coach, Brad Scott.

Remember when I said that Clemson would not fire Bowden just a few months after signing a $4M buy-out? I have never been so happy to say that I was WRONG!
  • Tommy_Trojan · 1 year ago
Be a real shame to lose a WR coach who hasn't developed once single wide-receiver fit for the NFL. What is it that makes this guy so special? I never have seen one WR at Clemson that was ever worth spit. Am I missing something here? Gee, sure looked like nobody was ever open to me. Seems like the only two players that I ever saw who could play were both RB's. Did the WR coach coach these guys up? I'm lost here. Can I get some help? I just can't understand how a WR coach is ready to be a HC.
  • clemson1981 · 1 year ago
    Ok Tommy:
Swinney developed Aaron Kelly, and Chansi Stuckey (who may I mention is quickly becoming a favorite target of Favre in New York). Top that with the fact this is a man who is arguably one of the best recruiters in the nation. He is the reason Davis, Spiller, Korn, Kelly, Bowers, Sapp, and many others have committed to Clemson. His other job Tommy is Recruiting Coach.
  • blackdawg · 1 year ago
Maybe he is not the recruiting coordinator but top recruiter. Remember that recruiting was a success under Tommy, so Clemson needs to keep that in place and improve the coaching. Swinney is though still an interim.

    ESPN article.
"Swinney has earned a reputation as a top-notch recruiter who's a smooth talker and good with boosters and the media. He was chosen over defensive coordinator Vic Koenning, who was head coach at Wyoming and more than capable of taking over the team. Koenning is a good coach whose candor with the media might have been a factor in the decision."

    Clemson1981:

Okay, my buddy is a big Jets fan, so I do know who Stuckey is. He has kinda come from nowhere - but I was not aware that he was from Clemson. I take it that Kelly is your best receiver now? A couple of you guys are marking him up for being a great recruiter. Okay. Is he young guy? Up and coming "next great thing"? Just curious. Not trying to be too sarcastic. It's just that Clemson has never been known for their passing ability. That's reality. I just find it a little odd, that with the turmoil at Clemson (a high profile school), that the reigns might be handed over at this time to an unproven Head Coach. It's just a little pecular in light of all that has recently happened. If you guys are all for it - then so am I.
  • blackdawg · 1 year ago
TT, i don't have a dog in the fight, but I think that you can retain a good recruiter. You give him a raise, and the guy you hire knows this guy gives him a leg up. Jim Donnan at GA hired Rodney Garner, a great recruiter, Mark Richt kept him on staff. I think their AD will need to make a smart hire. Clemson has struggled with their hires after Ford and before Bowden. Bowden was a good hire but in my opinion was at Clemson too long. They need find a good one now and not worry about losing recruits, they'll get their share, and I don't necessarily believe they will lose Swinney in process.
  • Tommy_Trojan · 1 year ago
    blackdawg:

Yeh, I was a little concerned for Swinney myself. What happens if it does not work out for him and they do hire another guy. That might be a little tough to swallow. Hopefully, they win some games and the guy can actually do it. You need to get started somewhere. I guess that Clemson is willing to give this guy his shot. Could be the "Joe Paterno" for all we know.
  • clemson1981 · 1 year ago
    Tommy:
I totally understand. I am sure you don't really follow or understand Clemson football, and same can be said for me and So Cal. Kelly is a Sr. this year, and has quickly become a Clemson fan favorite. I think he will b every good in the pro's and kinda come out of nowhere. Historically speaking Clemson has some very good receivers. Perry Tuttle instantly comes to mind (the guy whose on the SI front cover after Clemson won it all in 81. Tyler Grisham is quickly becoming a big name at least in Tiger Town, Stuckey, Kelly, and former Denver Bronco Rod Gardner. All went to Clemson, so the history is there, just many people never know about the talent coming out of Clemson.
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
Actually I would disagree. I think that Aaron Kelly is terribly overrated. I certainly think the talent is there but he never seems to be giving 100%. Tyler Grisham is our hardest working, and therefore best receiver. He reminds me of Wes Welker.
  • blackdawg · 1 year ago
Chansi Stuckey, New York Jets WR, would be one. I'm not the expert on Clemson but Dabo Swenney is one of Clemsons top recruiter, (recruiting coordinator?) if I'm not mistaken.
  • RazzMaTazz · 1 year ago
In addition to being ranked the #5 recruiter in the nation by Rivals last year, Swinney was the receivers coach for Alabama's #2 all-time receiver, Clemson's #1 all-time receiver and future NFLer (Aaron Kelly), Chansi Stuckey (who was drafted by the Jets), and Airese Curry (who was drafted by the Bears).
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
I'd like to see Dabo Swinney do well and keep the job, actually.

Did you catch his presser at 8? I like the feeling that I get from him. It was good stuff, and he sounds like our kind of guy. Best of luck to him. He really couldn't get a better start to his head coaching career than a win over the Jackets on Saturday.

    GO TIGERS!
  • RazzMaTazz · 1 year ago
Yeah. I really liked Dabo's attitude in the presser. I liked his energy. I was never as impressed with Bowden in any press conference over the last ten years. But I was impressed with Dabo on his first one. Dabo seems to have that player's-coach attitude (like Pete Carroll or Mark Richt) of let's get prepared, go balls-out, and have some fun.
  • Lapapa · 1 year ago
I think this is a bad way to end things with Coach Bowden. What is really lacking here are the players attitudes in general. Thunder and Lightning??? Give me a break! I would use the term Gassy and Bloated! Also, the QB situation is always going to be fluid. If the QB always has to be chased because of a terrible OL then it makes sense to send in Willie Corn. By the way, that's a great name for a Clemson QB.
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
Does Tommy Bowden still get a vote in the Coaches poll? How does that work? Do they have an alternate in line in case a coach is canned? Does the interim coach get the vote? Do they go to 60 voters instead of 61?

I dunno, guess we will see in the coaches poll next week.
