Fanblogs Open Conference Championship Thread
As a Clemson fan (every game except this one!), I hope you're right. My experience on mid-season coaching changes suggests that you might get a temporary, positive bump from the change, but it rarely translates into an immediate victory and seldom translates to a "sea change" for the season.
Back in the 90s, GT fired Bill Lewis the week of homecoming. Apparently, the AD couldn't stand to have all those alumni show up beefing about the football team. Lewis was replaced with George O'Leary, who lost the homecoming game to Wake Forest (if memory serves) back when the Deamon Deacons were terrible. O' Leary went on to have some success as HC, but it was due to the quality of his coordinators (IMO) as his record went south as soon as Ralph Friedgen quit to become the HC at Maryland.
More recently, UF fired the Zooker and the Gators lost to UGA and then came up with an impressive win over FSU. So it's hard for me to say what effect this change will really have, though I'm glad to hear that the fans are reinvigorated. Las Vegas is reflecting this as the opening line for this week's game had GT as 2+ point favorites and now Clemson is favored similarly, so I guess a lot of Clemson fans are pleased with the change and putting their money on the line as a result.
Did you really start the waterboy? That's just what they were telling me today.
GO DAWGS!
Oh, and you forgot cause chaos on your committed recruits.
So what's up with lord-god Stafford? I thought he was "maturing" and "progressing".
We are not scaring anybody right now, but our fans.
Juuuuuuuuuuuust in time for Christmas shopping!
and it kinda seemed like everyone in the program knew he would be fired, so there hasn't been a lot of fire from bowden or his team.
i think the team will perform the same, or better without him.
Clemson Fans...I hear you guys are clamoring for Muschamp...
Be careful what you ask for, gentlemen...
He went to Auburn, and I hate to say this, there was not much to distinguish his tenure there, either...
Tejas didn't exactly stymie Bradord & OU on Saturday, either...
Lane Kiffen
Will Muschamp
Bobby Johnson
I'm surprised no one has mentioned:
Skip Holtz (ECU)
Kyle Whittingham - Utah
David Cutcliffe - Duke
Turner Gill - Buffalo
Bronco Mendenhall - BYU
Mike Leach - Texas Tech
Mike Price - UTEP
Frank Solich - Ohio
George O'Leary - UCF
Walt Deptula the local football guru on 104.9, is saying stay away Muschamp, Bobby Johnson, and Mendenhall. He said at least interview Mark Mangino, who went 12-1 last years and beat Va Tech in the Orange Bowl, also Whittingham who might follow Urban Meyer South. Earlier today they were saying rumors have people in Tenn. talking to Bill Cowher, Clemson's closer to home for him he if is really interested in coaching at the college level. Who knows but I think there are a lot of advantages to axing Tommy now.
PHIL FULMER IS GOING TO AUBURN !!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree with the sentiment of why now? It must have been some incredible pressure on the AD from boosters to make this happen and I doubt it started on Sunday. That, or alot of them read Fanblogs.com and really put alot of stock in Joe's opinion.
Geaux Tigers
Geaux SEC
I think this is perfect. I am actually currently drinking up this news along with the equally smooth and satisfying flavor of The One and Only, Newcastle.
Clemson's season started with a big thud, a 24-point loss to then-No. 24 Alabama that senior quarterback Cullen Harper said "really hurt our confidence."
Harper, who was benched after the Tigers' loss to Wake Forest and replaced by highly regarded sophomore Willy Korn, said the program needed to cut ties with Bowden.
"It's what he deserved," Harper said. "Dabo Swinney is a fine man and will do an excellent job."
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=364...
CJ Spiller didn't seem to upset in the article either, sounded like Tommy was losing the team. Maybe in the next few days other players may back Tommy, it happened with Ray Goff, but right now it doesn't sound like Spiller or Cullen Harper are too upset.
"He let the offensive coordinator [Rob Spence] run the show and we got away from me and James [Davis]," Spiller said. "I think part of the problem was when he benched Cullen. Some people wanted the offensive coordinator fired, he fired the quarterback and then he got fired."
I think it's a good move right now. People are gonna talk about recruits being lost. So what! The next coaching regime may not even want those kinda players. They may want players that want to be "a Clemson Tiger".
I don't think that your Administration is the problem. Clearly they have chosen to act now. Bowden was not a "bad hire". He did several good things for a number of years. The program is now going in the wrong direction. The administration clearly see's that. So why did they let him go now?
I hate to be the bringer of "bad news". But, Lane Kiffen is available right now, and won't be there for very long. Your administration is going after Kiffen right now. Why? Great young QB in Willie Korn is the top reason. What does Kiffen bring? Expertise in developing QB's. What else is Kiffen very good at? Recruiting. Kiffen was the "Top Recruiter" at Southern Cal. Kiffen is extremely aggressive. Al Davis didn't like that. But, Kiffen would probably have demanded "good faith". Therefore, Bowden is let go right now. Kiffen could be hired very shortly and be able to rally the recruiting effort almost immediately.
What's in it for Kiffen? Kiffen is a lock for either the Syracuse job (AD is USC alum I believe) or Washington's. Maybe others. Both of those teams would take years to build. At Washington, Kiffen probably would realize, that he can't beat Pete Carroll (can't recruit Los Angeles like USC). Clemson would be the perfect opportunity for Kiffen. The ACC is prime for the taking. There is no "dominate" team in the conference. Although Spurrier has not been able to recruit "up" South Carolina in the tough SEC, Kiffen would feel that he could recruit enough, to rule the ACC. Clemson already has tons of talent on hand, and the transition back to prominence, could be easily done in as little as one year. The "West Coast" offense, although very intricate, is a very appealing recruiting tool for many different kinds of prospects. It utilizes every position in the offense.
I'm not putting a sell of one of "our" guys here. It just makes sense to me, if I were Lane Kiffen, that the Clemson job is on top of the list. And, if I'm the Administration at Clemson, I want my program to become a National power. I think all sides are looking into this as we speak.
I am warming up to the idea of Kiffin. I trust our administration, and I think they'll make the right decision.
I take it that this guy Spence is the OC? And that he would be expendable, correct? Who are these other guys (Swinney, Napier and Blackwell)? Are there any DC's or defensive people in here. RB coaches? What are they? I'm sure that somebody like Kiffen would be agreeable to keep most of the defensive coaches, obviously the RB coach, etc. He may have problems with the QB coach, WR coach and OC in general. What could Kiffen salvage here? It would be a good idea for anybody to hang around awhile - as Clemson would be getting some offense. Also, they aren't real cheap at Southern Cal, so I would assume that Kiffen will be trying to get more cheese for all those who do stay.
Vic Koenning - current DC
Dabo Swinney - Asst. HC, WR coach under Bowden; interim HC now
Billy Napier - Asst HC, TE coach, Recruiting coordinator under Bowden
David Blackwell - Inside LB coach
Swinney, Napier, and Blackwell have been our hot shots in recruiting. They are young and energetic and they can bring in the solid talent. I can't answer your question fully because I don't know yet what each coach's role is.
Did you see all that happened his last year at Miami?
Lane Kiffin
Butch Davis
Will Muschamp
Bronco Mendenhall
Jim Leavitt
Kevin Steele (wildcard, nick saban said he's more ready to be a head coach than any assistant he's worked with, he has NFL experience, he's worked under bobby bowden and nick saban, and he's a great defensive mind (defensive minded head coaches are usually the best))
Hmmm.... New Sherrif in town. Seems that I've heard that before in here somewhere...
Tommy Tuberville is a good coach.
Tommy Tuberville is = Houston Nutt, in that he usually wins at least one big game a year, and does a lot with the talent he has.
but look. the best tuberville has done in all of the years of having little to no in-state competition, is ONE sec championship. in alabama's worst decade.
now, alabama arguably has the best coach in the country, and has a tremendous buzz surrounding its program.
Tuberville may win this year. he may win next year. who knows?
but the bottom line is that Alabama has a better team than Auburn for the first time in a long time, and Alabama is only gonna get better.
nobody knows about tuberville. he's not a name you see in the news. he's not a household name in the southeast. and that's fine when you're recruiting against mike shula, but what in-state blue-chipper is gonna choose the name Tuberville over Saban??
well there hasnt been one yet.
Auburn is crashing and burning, Alabama is actually legitimately back.
in Alabama's worst nightmare we could fall to 9-3, but really, do you see that happening? Alabama usually only comes apart after their first loss. and last year, it took a stacked georgia team OT to hand us our first loss. but alabama never loses its first game to a team that's worse (ole miss, tennessee, arkansas state). alabama might drop one to lsu. we won't lose to msu. and let's say you're right and Tubby pulls off the shocker in T-town.
10-2
auburn will be lucky to go to any bowl this year besides the iron one.
so who wins recruiting in 2010?
Alabama.
who wins recruiting in 2009?
Alabama is winning by a landslide as we speak
who won recruiting in 2008?
Alabama by a landslide
and despite what you, and other Auburn fans may claim, according to Rivals.com, this is the first year alabama has more talent than auburn.
don't you see???
Tuberville couldnt win a NC with no Alabama.
how's he ever gonna do it with Nick saban down the road??
unless that's not what you auburn fans want.....
and personally, i dont see tuberville ever winning the SEC with Saban at alabama.
Auburn needs HYPE. Lane Kiffin would land y'all the SI cover, ESPN coverage, etc.
that's what y'all need. a new, improved, Auburn 2.0 is the image y'all need (part of why tuberville wanted the spread) to attract recruits.
Tuberville will never give you that. UNLESS.
tuberville survives this season somehow, he hires another spread offensive coordinator, cleans out his whole offensive staff, and tells the new OC to assemble a team of coaches. and tuberville concentrates on defense (y'alls bread and butter).
and even all of that wouldnt be as good as Lane Kiffin with a good DC.
that's how i see the current state of auburn.
So you really think Tubs is gone? Most Bama fans I know want him to stay so they can enact some payback...
So you definitely subscribe to the zero-sum idea that one of the two teams in the state can't be winning unless the other is losing (other than the actual game itself?) And since Alabama's stock is on the rise, Auburn's must fall?
Alabama has whipped Auburn in recruiting for DECADES, yet here we are still, nipping at your heels, just as we always have. I'm glad that there's a national championship in recruiting now. It gives a team two goals to strive for...
Yes, if we could only grab a SI cover.... Say beating an undefeated #1 ranked historic rival at their house? Actually, I think you guys would get the cover story on that one again...
Bobby Johnson
Will Muschamp (who I do not want)
Dabo Swinny
Chris Peterson
Those guys are all great choices, I prefer Johnson only because he is a Clemson guy, and Peterson would do great with Korn as his QB and Harper as his RB. Eitehr way I am happy.
And for all of the people who think and ask "Why Now?" I will tell you Why Now? Because IPTAY over the past 3 years has seen membership go down down down every year, and trust me when IPTAY speaks TDP listens and so does the Athletic Department as a whole. You will not find many Clemson fans who arent rejoicing over this right now. Great call, perfect timing, and it gets fans back into a season that many thought was lost (and still is) just last Thursday. The fan base is now energized and ready to see how the team does in the post-Bowden era.
GOO TIGERS!
One thing that has not been mentioned here yet, is that Rob Spence has been fired as well. I really do believe that Bowden's refusal to make a change with Spence is ultimately the reason for the end of his tenure at Clemson. The play calling should change tremendously at this point. Death Valley will be absolutely electric on Saturday. Instead of fans showing up worried what kind of a failure they might have paid to witness, now the Clemson Nation can show up unified in support and excitement.
As you may recall, immediately after the final whistle of the Wake Forest game, I bid Bowden farewell. I should have known it would wait until Monday, but that was certainly the last straw. I have had the pleasure of knowing Tommy Bowden and he is a wonderful man and I wish him all the best in the future. I truly hope that he is able to find a position that makes him happy. Of course, at this point, he could choose to retire as his time at Clemson has certainly made him a wealthy man.
Now, on to the future. Swinney, Johnson, Kiffin, and Petersen are on the short list. Muschamp seems to be there as well, but I'm not sure why really. I hope and expect Clemson to give Swinney the full opportunity to hold the job, and not do like Nebraska did with Bo Pelini the first time around. If he is not kept as a head coach, I'd like to see him retained as an OC at the least. One thing's for sure, I've not been this excited about a Clemson decision in a long time.
Now I have to scramble to get my tickets to the Georgia Tech game...
LSU at South Carolina
Georgia Tech at Clemson
Best of luck to both...
Or maybe Washington...
Geaux Tigers
Geaux SEC
The chatter around Tiger Town is funny. Cowher, Erikson, Wyche...
I have herd Cowher as well, Wyche would be good considering he lives in Pickens, I really like Peterson combining with Korn, and Harper. I think Napier, and Sweeny should be kept.
Presser live is here:
http://www.wyff4.com/video/5552967/index.html
Bet you wish you didn’t screw Georgia over at the last minute by picking that loser Bowden over Richt and the Dawgs. Have fun changing oil the rest of your life you worthless Benedict Arnold!
Who’s your coach now big boy!? Oh how sweet it is!!! Really hate it for you kid. Its not too late to transfer to UGA and be third string water boy. Have fun with a program that is now set back 5 years. See you at the garage.
I've been hearing talk about Tommy Tuberville, Cowher, etc, too but I agree with you on Swinney. I'd like to see him get a shot at the job. Clemson needs a coach who can relate to their fan base as well as recruit and coach. I"m not sure some of the names thrown around (except Johnson) would fit the ethos of the university.
By the way, I took your "best of luck to both" (in reference to the USC/LSU and Clemson/GT games) to mean USC and Clemson, NOT LSU!!! I'm sure I was right! LOL
Go Gamecocks!!
Joe:
I am sure you are familiar with Walt Deptula on 104.9 he suggested Mark Mangino, now I personally think that is a horrible idea. I do like Muschamp, Bobby Johnson, Dabo, and Peterson. Right now it looks like Dabo could have an upper hand if he can rally these Tigers to some wins in the final half of the year. EX: if Dabo gets a win this weekend (and I think he will, considering he will be making the play calls, because it's official Spence has been fired) so Swinney beats GT, FSU, and Carolina he's the next Head Coach no problem, and no question but we shall see in time, TDP will make the right call, hes the same guy that hired Les Miles at Okie State, and then Mike Gundy. And look how that turned out for those two......
say what you want. bowden did bring some good things to the field. sure no championship yeah yeah, but for what we had, i enjoyed it. Good luck to Bowden wherever he ends up. thanks for bring some long yardage and exciting plays to the Valley.
Seriously, why is it ok for Miami to can Coker who won 1.9 national championships in 6 years, but it's somehow disgraceful for Clemson to can Bowden, after 9 years and ZERO ACC c'ships (let alone NC's)? Seems we've been through this before.
GO GATORS!!
Mike Bobo, Georgia offensive coordinator
Dave Christensen, Missouri offensive coordinator
Bud Foster, Virginia Tech defensive coordinator
Todd Graham, Tulsa head coach
Bobby Johnson, Vanderbilt head coach
Mike Leach, Texas Tech head coach
Brian Kelly, Cincinnati head coach
Jim Leavitt, USF head coach
Jerry Moore, Appalachian State head coach
Will Muschamp, Texas defensive coordinator
Gary Patterson, TCU head coach
Charlie Strong, Florida defensive coordinator
Brent Venables, Oklahoma defensive coordinator
Kevin Wilson, Oklahoma offensive coordinator
I had to poke some fun at that...
Christensen: Don't know much about him, but I doubt he would come to Tiger Town.
Foster: Would be a great hire....till Beamer retires
Graham: Good hire as well.....but I get a TB feeling from him
Johnson: Perfect Hire!!!
Leach:Once he stops playing cupcakes call me and we will talk
Kelly: Good guy, great coach, not for Clemson
Leavitt:Wow what a great hir this would be, but no way is he leaving his baby at USF
Moore: Has a national title team, loves Boone, and would never leave
Muschamp:If we want him we better go after him because he will be getting calls soon
Patterson:Just not a good fit, he belongs at Texas A & M or a Big 12 school in general
Strong:One of my favorite coaches in the country, but he is best in the SEC
Venables and Wilson:If they are anything like Stoops other guys who are coaching, keep them away from Clemson.
You are living in a dream world! You got lucky in 1981 and you think that is who you really are? Give it up. Tommy got you basically 8 wins a year. Next coach will not duplicate that success. Take a look at your geography and what kid is coming to Clemson when they can go to Athens, Atlanta, Knoxville and now Chapel Hill. Get real.
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=364...
Ironically, if Bowden has simply hired a great OC (or hadn't stood by the incompetent Spence), Clemson probably would have won at least one ACC title, and Bowden would still have his job.
Bowden obviously didn't volutarily resign. I'm sure that the AD said do you want to be fired or would you rather save face and resign?
I'd like to see Clemson hire Chris Peterson or Jim Grobe-- although if Clemson wins out, maybe Dabo deserves it. Either way, I would hate to see Clemson lose Dabo Swinney. Whoever the new coach is, they will fire the O-line coach, Brad Scott.
Remember when I said that Clemson would not fire Bowden just a few months after signing a $4M buy-out? I have never been so happy to say that I was WRONG!
Swinney developed Aaron Kelly, and Chansi Stuckey (who may I mention is quickly becoming a favorite target of Favre in New York). Top that with the fact this is a man who is arguably one of the best recruiters in the nation. He is the reason Davis, Spiller, Korn, Kelly, Bowers, Sapp, and many others have committed to Clemson. His other job Tommy is Recruiting Coach.
ESPN article.
"Swinney has earned a reputation as a top-notch recruiter who's a smooth talker and good with boosters and the media. He was chosen over defensive coordinator Vic Koenning, who was head coach at Wyoming and more than capable of taking over the team. Koenning is a good coach whose candor with the media might have been a factor in the decision."
http://myespn.go.com/blogs/acc/0-2-414/Clemson-...
Okay, my buddy is a big Jets fan, so I do know who Stuckey is. He has kinda come from nowhere - but I was not aware that he was from Clemson. I take it that Kelly is your best receiver now? A couple of you guys are marking him up for being a great recruiter. Okay. Is he young guy? Up and coming "next great thing"? Just curious. Not trying to be too sarcastic. It's just that Clemson has never been known for their passing ability. That's reality. I just find it a little odd, that with the turmoil at Clemson (a high profile school), that the reigns might be handed over at this time to an unproven Head Coach. It's just a little pecular in light of all that has recently happened. If you guys are all for it - then so am I.
Yeh, I was a little concerned for Swinney myself. What happens if it does not work out for him and they do hire another guy. That might be a little tough to swallow. Hopefully, they win some games and the guy can actually do it. You need to get started somewhere. I guess that Clemson is willing to give this guy his shot. Could be the "Joe Paterno" for all we know.
I totally understand. I am sure you don't really follow or understand Clemson football, and same can be said for me and So Cal. Kelly is a Sr. this year, and has quickly become a Clemson fan favorite. I think he will b every good in the pro's and kinda come out of nowhere. Historically speaking Clemson has some very good receivers. Perry Tuttle instantly comes to mind (the guy whose on the SI front cover after Clemson won it all in 81. Tyler Grisham is quickly becoming a big name at least in Tiger Town, Stuckey, Kelly, and former Denver Bronco Rod Gardner. All went to Clemson, so the history is there, just many people never know about the talent coming out of Clemson.
Did you catch his presser at 8? I like the feeling that I get from him. It was good stuff, and he sounds like our kind of guy. Best of luck to him. He really couldn't get a better start to his head coaching career than a win over the Jackets on Saturday.
GO TIGERS!
I dunno, guess we will see in the coaches poll next week.
I like Cutcliffe or Skippy Holtz to replace him.
GO GATORS!!
