Fanblogs.com: Tommy Bowden to be next coach at Texas A&M?

  • OU_Ron · 1 year ago
He can throw away his Tiger Paw pants and get a pair of Maroon with Dog Paws, Sherman seems lost, either that or his players don't understand his play book........
  • Kevin @ Fanblogs · 1 year ago
How 'bout... both? He does seem lost and the players don't understand his play book. The team has looked miserable on offense, defense, and special teams.
  • 1Tomcat · 1 year ago
I enjoyed watching that blocked extra point run back for the two-point conversion in the Tech game. I thought they did purty good in their last game, but alas 3 feild goals, gotta punch it in for 6 instead of settling for 3.
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
If he does want to continue coaching, I think it'd be a great position for him. Of course, I don't know much about Texas A&M, but for any Aggie fans out there, he'd be a pretty good hire as long as he leaves Rob Spence behind.
  • fan · 1 year ago
Not that Clemson University doesn't respect it's own military & agricultural heritage, but the modern day Clemson has very little remaining of the old Clemson A&M days to warrant a comparison between it and the still strong TAM traditions.
  • Kevin @ Fanblogs · 1 year ago
The suggestion wasn't that Clemson was equal to the Aggies current or historical Corps tradition, rather than Bowden understood the legacy/heritage aspect of the university and could leverage more so than the Sherman. That said, CU has an outstanding military tradition - perhaps second only to TAMU.
  • timberwolf · 1 year ago
I think that Tommy Bowden, is still young enough to get the coaching jobs for great schools in the collegiate football programs. I think that He would make a great head coach for TEXAS A&M. just as long as He has a great coaching staff & players under him. God Bless Him at his new job and school !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Ramblin' Gator · 1 year ago
Bowden would be a better choice than Mike Sherman.

There aren't many examples of NFL coaches successfully transitioning to NCAA football (Pete Caroll, Jim Grobe, other?). It's a completely different mindset: developing potential talent vs. exploiting talent out of prima donnas. Sherman was/is a bad hire for the Aggies, IMO.
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
That's exactly where Bowden wants to go--to a team that will fire a HC after one year...

You think they may still want Tuberville?
  • OU_Ron · 1 year ago
No, Texas reserves that right or first refusal !!!!!
  • TigerEducated · 1 year ago
    WEA,

Clemson gave him 9 years...Sherman's a duck out of water, and they all know that...

They made a reach and it turned out poorly, which speaks poorly of their AD. But, no one can question that Bowden>Sherman, and its not close...

    I think it'd be a great hire.
  • Former Student · 1 year ago
I'm a bit confused...I thought Bowden left/was pressured to leave for underperforming. Sure he did great things at Clemson, but they expected more out of him, just like A&M would. So how would he be any different here than at Clemson?

Why are we so quick to send Sherman packing? Make no mistake, this season is not making me happy, but 1)it isn't over yet, 2)common sense tells us to let the man have a chance to implement his system, and 3) recruiting is what seperates A&M from the other big programs in the Big XII and changing coaches on a yearly basis is not the best way to improve that.

I'm not trying to say Bowden is a bad coach or Sherman is our savior, but I am asking for a reasonable perspective and that we give Sherman a fair chance at the least. Just my thoughts, take 'em or leave 'em.
  • jc · 1 year ago
    Agree!

Plus Aggie fans aren't the best evaluators of head coaches. Remember when everyone was calling for R.C. Slocum''s head and was elated when they got Frachione. R.C. never had a losing season at A&M and the defense was always reliable.

    Aggie fans please be patient!
  • pounder · 1 year ago
Well, I think the columnist also forgot that Washington State is still a BCS league school, but that's for another discussion.

Yes, Tommy Bowden would probably be better. But why would he want the job?
  • uninspiredaggie · 1 year ago
I wish it would happen, but there is no way AD Bill Byrne will admtt he was wrong this quick.
Hopefully enough pressure will be put on by some influential boosters because unless that happens we are stuck with Sherman for at least 3 years.
  • JohnJ · 1 year ago
You are flat out ignorant.... all that needs to be said.
  • RazzMaTazz · 1 year ago
Kevin: Fact check. Bowden did not build a consistent Top 20 team.

Bowden only had ONE Top 20 finish at Clemson in ten years. He finished #16 in 2000 (which was the last year that Rich Rodriguez was still his OC).

    Bowden had only three more Top 25 finishes at Clemson. 2003 (#22), 2005 (#21), & 2007 (#21).

If Bowden only had a 43-32 record in the weak ACC, what chance would he stand in the Big12? Bowden was 7-26 (.212) against Top 25 finishers, and 0-8 (.000) against the AP Top 10 finishers. He'd get slaughtered. No decent team would hire Bowden. Maybe Syracuse or somebody like that.

Anyway, over the years, Bowden seems to have worn down and lost all enthusiasm. In recent years he talked about not wanting to coach in the long run. I'll be a bit surprised if he even wants to be a head coach anymore.

That was a fun article to read though. As a Clemson fan, I can't wait for college football season to start.
  • Kevin @ Fanblogs · 1 year ago
I agree that his teams didn't finish in the rankings too often, but that doesn't change the fact that they were ranked in the polls for much of Bowden's tenure - week in and week out. I'll go back and get the number of times his teams have appeared in the polls tonight or tomorrow.
  • gatorhippy · 1 year ago
"Appearing" in the polls and "Finishing" in the polls are worlds apart...

    Very true.

That avatar has certainly made me quite curious. Care to elaborate what exactly is going on in that picture?
  • gatorhippy · 1 year ago
That, good sir, is the Hippy about to enjoy a fine shot of Maker's with my man Unkown Hinson...

The King of Country Western Troubadours...

Part Hank Sr...Part Rev. Heat...Part Zappa...

    But all Hinson, baby...

Check the tracks but I'll warn you now...

They do no credit for the pickin' explosion that only the live show can provide...

Okay, just to get it straight, which one is you in the picture? :-)

I just looked on Napster--only one track--Baby, let's play rough...

I kinda like it--sounds like a less serious Junior Brown--on acid...

But you have to learn to spell his name correctly--you keep forgetting the 'n' in 'Unknown'...
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
He certainly does have an interesting sound. He seems like a good time to drink with.

Are they selling Maker's dripped with the 2 main colors of your school down there now, too? They charge a little more for it here, so I find it to be quite ridiculous.
  • CLT_Cock · 1 year ago
"Consistent top-twenty team year-in and year-out?" I have to give credit where it's due, but Tommy and his Tigers haven't finished a season in the top 20 in at least the past 5 years. Either way, I'm glad we won't be seeing him in November anymore.
  • Aggie_Brent · 1 year ago
We're not fans of Sherman right now but we sure as heck don't want Bowden. His teams are always overrated and tank after high preseason rankings. We've got big problems here at A&M but bringing in Tommy Bowden would only complicate them.
  • USC1801 · 1 year ago
    Razz:

I agree TB appears to be worn out. He doesn't have the fire and energy to take on a new head coaching position, at least if you base it on CU's performance this year and the comments he purportedly made at his "firing." And what coach who has just signed an extension and is fielding one of the best teams he ever coached, would walk away without a fight in the middle of the season? Jo Pa has more fight in him than TB exhibited! No, he has all the indications of someone who will take a break from coaching.
  • Porcine · 1 year ago
Halfway through his first season and the talk is already started. Pete Carroll started 2-5 and was Pac-10 co-champs the nest year. They weren't getting beat as bad as A&M but still.
  • Tommy_Trojan · 1 year ago
    Kevin:

What are you doing throwin' all these stats out here? You know that they are meaningless! Texas A&M is a great team and you know it. It really doesn't matter how they are performing on the field. Haven't you been watching the games? They really aren't as bad as the "numbers" would indicate. Besides, they play in a very tough conference, so they can't be that bad. LMAO!
  • Kevin @ Fanblogs · 1 year ago
    Exactly.

    Ramblin' Gator -
Lou Holtz and Dan Devine both came from the pro ranks to win a National Championship at Notre Dame.
  • Zac · 1 year ago
They are part of the exceptions, not the rule. Look at what the "Ole Ball Coach" has done at SC. Look at what Lou Holtz has done at SC. Everybody was talking up Skip Holtz after back-to-back wins against ranked teams. Ya think anybody's talk'n now? No, TB hasn't gotten his teams quite to the next level, but he has been a consistent winner. (Besides, I'm tell'n ya it was the pants.)
  • Ramblin' Gator · 1 year ago
Actually, you have further proved my point with these two examples. Both Holtz and Devine were successful NCAA coaches and relatively weak as NFL coaches, later returning to NCAA coaching. Holtz went 3-10 in less than one season as HC of the Jets and Devine went 25-28-4 in four seasons with the Packers.

Do you have any better examples of coaches who were a success in BOTH leagues? Perhaps someone who didn't coach for the Frightening Irish?
  • NoWayMan · 1 year ago
    This is the gay.
  • Gigem2006 · 1 year ago
If A&M were to go to drastic measures and bring in another coach, it wouldn't be Tommy Bowden. It would have to be a BIG splash hire...like Butch Davis. I think he would be the best choice since he's a proven winner at the college level. He's also currently at a school where football will always be 2nd fiddle, so now would be the time to go after him I don't see Butch staying at UNC...one way or another he's going to end up back at a football school.

Honestly, if A&M could make that happen...I'd be behind it 100%. A big name like Butch Davis would bring instant credibility to the program...and we'd have a guy with a proven college record that could legitimately compete with Mack Brown and Bob Stoops. Mike Sherman has the right schemes...but I question whether the guy can develop talent. And what A&M needs more than anything is a guy that can come in and win a decent amount of games with what is already there. Top 10 classes aren't going to come overnight - we need to prove to recruits that we can win 8-9 games with what we have. I just think you have to do what is best for the program. Programs that make bold moves are the ones that end up having the most success.
  • Zac · 1 year ago
I don't care where a coach comes from, grad-assistant, position coach, DC, OC, NFL, or the NHL. It's unrealistic to expect a winning season, let alone a great season, his 1st time out. Ramblin Gator said it best: "There aren't many examples of NFL coaches successfully transitioning to NCAA football…"

Well, there aren't many examples of 1st year coaches doing real well who came from other colleges either. Greg Robinson, Rich Rodriguez (twice), Randy Shannon, Dave Wannstedt, Ty Willingham: These are just some of the obvious examples. While ND's, Charlie Weiss, is an example of rare success, look what he did last year. THE WORST season in Irish history. Did they fire him? NO!

People have to learn to give a man a chance. It's like Tommy Tuberville with his OC. Teaching an offense an entirely new system, blocking schemes, blocking techniques, etc. places the 1st season in the "wash" column. People need to look at new coaches as an investment. If you're looking for short term gains, you're in the wrong business. If he doesn't work out after 4-5 years, that's the time to send him packing. Nobody's willing to wait.

I don't know what Tommy Bowden's condition is, but I too would be weary if I busted my hump day-in & day-out for no appreciation. Maybe what he needs is a little time. Where-ever you are Tommy B, sit back; relax; reflect; re-sort your priorities, and then decide whether or not you wanna replace Robinson or Willingham. Cause, if Auburn or TX A&M are gonna dump their guy before, let alone after 1 complete season, I wouldn't go there either.
  • Lennie Collins · 1 year ago
Let me see...Texas A&M is looking to hire this guy, Coach Bowden, to beat the main rival Texas and lose the "big" games. Isn't that what Coach Franchione was doing?
  • Kadet1 · 1 year ago
Aggie Fans can relax. Mike Sherman is and has been an excellent coach. Besides that, he's a leader. Was everyone asleep during the first half of the Tech game? The improvements are steady, though incremental. Young players are filling big slots. Empty stables in the trenches has us eating our seed corn this year, but wait until the recruiting gives us five-year's of experience in the system. Tell your blow-hard exes to quit betting on the games and start betting on the boys--long-term. That's when they'll appreciate Mike Sherman.
  • U.of S.C.1978 · 1 year ago
I agree with you. However, most fans, are just fans. If they are not all warm and fuzzy at the end of the game, they feel so unloved. The desire for change grows in their tiny little brains. They want cinderella. Incremental improvement is not part of their brain fart.
  • Kevin @ Fanblogs · 1 year ago
So... one not terrible half? That's the measure now? Sheesh.

Question - what happened in the second half? TT made adjustments and it did not appear that Tech did. Just my opinion, that game was not nearly as close as the score indicated. The RR shot themselves in the foot more than once to bail the Aggies D out. If the Aggies want to have a five year plan to get to the middle of the Big XII, then you've got the right man for the job right now.
  • Beergut · 1 year ago
Wow, this is just a dumb rumor and an even dumber idea. Tommy Bowden? No thanks, I'll stick with Sherman.

We want to win Big 12 and national championships at A&M. Why would we hire someone who can't even win the sorry ACC to head our program?
  • Kevin @ Fanblogs · 1 year ago
When was the last time A&M won a Big XII championship? I can't seem to recall.
  • U.of S.C.1978 · 1 year ago
Is Tommy B a smart hire for A@M? If he can replicate his record at MooU, the answer is yes. A@M goes from where it has been. To winning two thirds of it's games. Not to mention normally trouncing it's larger in-state foe.
  • JohnJ · 1 year ago
    Kevin,

It is obvious you are only here to slam Texas A&M but it was '98 o '99 I believe as I was living in St, Louis at the time. I am a graduate of Penn State, and Lord knows we have had our troubles. But when I read some of these posts taking shot at Texas A&M I have to laugh. Did they hurt you somewhere down the road? Did an Aggie have his way with your Mom? Look they have a great program, a ton of money, are in the top 5 in enrollment as a University, and have facilities that are top notch and getting better every year if that is even possible. We played them in the Alamo bowl 9 months ago and I work for the school now and got a copy of their media guide and if you guys are belittling them because they are rebuilding their program, watch out, they won't stay like this long.

They screwed up, they hung on to Franchione too long and the recruiting mess he left them with broad holes is not a short term fix. The people at A&M who make decisions know this, and if you don't you better soon. But for this site to post that Bowden is being looked at by Texas A&M is simply ignorant. Sherman is not going anywhere, the reason he was brought in is he was one of their best recruiters back when he was their OLine coach and they won a ton of games with the talent he brought in. Throw in his coaching experience, the staff he can and has brought in, and the ability to up their players to NFL quality and they are on their way back.

I have a ton of respect for them and their fans, they are first class people with nothing but respect for the opponents they play who do not show their backsides. After they beat Texas again last year, they fired Franchione. I think in years past a 2 year winning streak against the Longhorns kept coaches in their jobs, looks like they have learned their lessons of the past and why Bowden is a stupid and completely false rumor.
  • Kevin @ Fanblogs · 1 year ago
Pretty obvious that you're new to town. I was the one who was SUPPORTING A&M and putting them on a PEDASTAL as having one of the best (if not the best) all around offerings in college football. Facilities, boosters, fan support - they've got it all.

If you will bother to read the post, I am not suggesting that Texas A&M is looking at Bowden. What I said was a small booster block is suggesting that Sherman isn't the man and that they need to look at Bowden, since he's available.

If putting forward a well-placed note from a respected Aggie in some way makes you want to discuss my Mom, then... you're the one with the issues, Chief.

Texas A&M has everything in place to be successful, they dont need 4 or 5 years to reload etc. etc. They always have an excellent recruiting class every year. They have the facilities, tradition, Alumi base and a great home field environment. The Aggies fired the winningest coach they ever had RC Slokum after a 6-6 season, mainly because they lost to the Horns, they hired Francione and went 3-9 his first season now after beating the Horns in back to back seasons they fired their coach. I personally believe that the Aggies will never be satisfied with whoever coaches there because 8-4 seasons just aint good enough, and I dont think that a Bowden hire at this time is gonna happen because of the A&M creed and code of conduct. They hired Sherman, so they made a promise and Aggies don't lie, or renigg on a deal.
I know that they do play in B-12 south and coming in #4,#5 or #6 really isn't that bad considering the competition. BTW I'm going to try to attend the A&M @ BU game in Waco, maybe those Bears will pull down the goalpost again.

1Tomcat, Slocum wasn't fired because he lost to texas. He was fired because his teams had been mediocre for several years, with no end in sight, and his team's performance fell off at the end of the season. That is the same reason fran was fired, despite beating the 'horns the last 2 seasons. So your theory has no basis. A&M can be a contender. 4, 5, or 6 in the Big 12 South isn't good enough. 8-4 would be a great record right now, but in the long run A&M will expect to compete for the Big 12 title every year. The program needs a solid foundation to build on. Namely, a coach that can develop the talent in place and win 7-9 games with what's there.

As for the Bowden talk, I just don't see that happening given his mediocre track record. If A&M were to make a bold move and start over after this season, they would have to make a BIG splash hire for proven good coach...like Butch Davis. Which might be good move because now would be the time to try and get the guy, since he's at a school where football is 2nd fiddle to the basketball culture there. In the end, you have to do what's best for the program. I don't blame my fellow Ags for wanting a change, because the program is in need of a positive boost right now.
  • 1Tomcat · 1 year ago
Hey Gigem2006 Would you not agree that the Aggies dream all year long of beating the Horns, its kinda like what they aspire to do and after a 8 year drought they pulled it off twice in consecutive seasons. I saw the A&M vs TTech, A&M vs Neb and the A&M vs OU games in 2006 all those games shoulda been victories for the Aggs, Too many times they were settling for 3 instead of going for it on 4th down, so close yet so far away, then by some divine miracle they pulled off the huge upset of UT in Austin, then they got whuped in their Bowl appearance.
I kinda figured that Dennis was on his way out,Then last year 07 that E-Mail scandle and losses against Miami and Texas Tech and yet another Bowl game loss sealed his fate.
Dont worry they are not going to run Sherman off and hire Bowden, Davis or Tubberville.
The Aggies might pull off one more win this season but it aint gonna happen in Austin or Waco
Good luck against the Sooners & Cowboys

HIre Bowden and get him to bring Brad Scott with him to coach the OL and hire Rob Spence as the OC. You'll be a consistent pre-season top 20'er or maybe even top 15 and by the end of the season you'll be lucky to be noticed by the polls.

  • Tiger Mike · 1 year ago
i'm definitely not complaining about the money on the facilities. That will DEFINITELY help us in the long run. What our NEXT coach needs to understand is regardless of how incredibly talented your skill position players are, you still need a good OL to block!! No one can gain significant yardage with three guys draped on them as soon as they get the ball... It really doesn't matter to me if A&M is crazy enough to hire him or not, I just wish that they would have courted and landed him LAST year!!!

I don't think Tommy Bowden would be a good fit at all. When he left Clemson, his team was no longer responding to him. His QB, that he demoted two days before he left said.."HE got what he deserved."

Y'all didn't mention the best the thing about a Texas A&M football game. The Fightin' Texas Aggie Band halftime. They're good, certainly worth the price of admission.
  • clemson1981 · 1 year ago
Bowden always said that Clemson would be his last job, and right now I can see that. I think A&M would be a good hire, then get rid of him right as your stock is rising. But I think Bowden will either stay in the ACC or go to the Big East IF he even comes back to coaching. Now WVU isnt looking as good as we all thought this season, and Pat Stewart isnt exactly the youngest guy out there. I could see Bowden at his Alma Mater, or at Louisville. Now that is a better higher than TAMU. Lets be honest those people will chastise him worse than we did down here.
  • Clemson999010 · 1 year ago
Bowden is the classic underachiever that would be a HUGE mistake for A&M. He is a loser and that bullchit article about Clemson being a top 20 team year in and year out is crap. They have rarely been ranked in the top 20 at the end of the last 10 seasons. He is a garbage coach.

My father was born on a farm in NE Texas. We always pulled for the Cowboys, the Aggies, and UT if they weren't playing Texas A&M.
Believe me you don't want Tommy Bowden coaching anywhere in Texas! He has no clue what physical football is about. He couldn't win consistently in the ACC. He never came close to beating VT! His team with two of the best RBs in the country last year had 60 yds rushing vs Furman, 34 vs GT, 8 vs VT, and 47 vs BC in the game that would have taken him to his first ACCCG! If that is Texas football, Texas has changed greatly for the worse!
