Fanblogs.com: Urban Meyer is the next Notre Dame head coach

  • USC1801 · 1 year ago
This story sounds like wishful thinking on the part of the NDame fanhood. And you're telling me that his wife picks where he works? Does she call plays, too?
  • Regan · 1 year ago
Wives? They actually do pick where the husband works....it's really sad, but true.
  • USC1801 · 1 year ago
"Urby, it's time to leave Florida and go to NDame. Hey! Get Fifi off that couch, and move. . . NOW!!"

"But Shellycons, I really want to stay in Florida and win a NC. I mean, honeybuns, we've beaten the best and are poised to win the big one. Can't we just stay a little itsy bitsy longer?" I may never have this opportunity again. . . ever!

"Read my lips, Gatorboy. . . NO! It's time someone kicked Chuckles out of South Bend and made some M - O - N - E - Y for themselves! By the way, I want Tebo running more to his left against the Citadel. And move that fat kid from Georgia over to left tackle."

    1) This article is by a Florida paper and journalist

    2) Shelly picked Florida. Meyer wanted Notre Dame, his family convinced him otherwise.

    3) He has 5 years remaining on his contract. At Utah he had a clause allowing him to leave for one of his three dream jobs without a fine. I doubt Florida gave him that luxury. He will be in Florida through then, so Georgia Tech will be closer to home for the next 5 years at least.

    4) Where 15 year old Gigi goes to college might be more telling.

    5) In 5 years Weis should have ND to a place Meyer has not yet proven himself... needing to rebuild a program from scratch.
  • TigerEducated · 1 year ago
I doubt-even in these rough economic times-Notre Dame's pockets are of such shallow depth that they couldn't pull out any coin necessary to bring in a guy that's proven he will cheat at will on the recruiting trail, lie about other programs and their academics, flout NCAA rules, talk out of both sides of his mouth, run players off and bring them back based on nothing but need, subscribes to the Nick Saban "if you ain't arrested, then you're eligible" eligibility mantra, and a guy that goes so far as to flag recruits test scores who sign with opponents so as to retard their development long term to help prevent them from enrolling elsewhere...

The dude's cut-throat, and we all saw what Notre Dame's foolish enough to do with George O'Resume-gate, and Biff Tannon...err...Charlie Weis...

They'll break the bank for Meyer in a heartbeat...

If they make a change, its GOT to be Meyer, or bust...
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
    George O'Resume... Funny!!!
  • Porcine · 1 year ago
    Young Biff or old Biff?
  • TampaGator · 1 year ago
How'd he "cheat" on the recruiting trail? Lie about other school's academics (I recall him dissing LSU's academics in comparison to UF's, but that wasn't lying...)?
..."flout NCAA rules"? Run players off...

That's an awful lot of mud you slung; let's see your basis.

    GO GATORS!!
  • TigerEducated · 1 year ago
Okay, let's go back and review some of this...

I'm sure it was COMPLETELY on the up and up that he got UF's gymnastics team to put a WR recruit's girlfriend on scholarship...and then called him just after Tim Tebow won the Heisman last year...It's not like that's a complete violation of NCAA rules or anything, and USA Today wrote about it in a full page writeup...and so did many other media outlets...

I'm sure that was COMPLETELY LEGIT, LOL...

The bump rule...You know that Saban & Meyer are notorious for violating both, don't you? Hell, Saban even mentioned specifically in the Alabama newspapers that, "I know everyone thinks Urban & I do this..."

I'd love for you to call Forrest Saban a liar...All of the Gumpfellaters here would love to make a new friend in you...

He didn't "dis", he said we didn't graduate our players and that we had a faulty academic support system. Terrance Toliver sent his guidance counselors and teachers over here to find out the TRUTH about it. They told NO ONE where they were from, and they came back and told Terrance that Meyer BALD FACED LIED about what he told Terrance.

So, do me another favor...Go tell those teachers at his HS they made that sh!t up...It's not me...It's them saying that...

That's what helped ice Terrance for us...He realized Urban would lie about ANYTHING in order to help Florida gain favor. We simply don't do that here. Negative recruiting does not happen at LSU. Your former coach negatively recruit either...Ron Zook was a great recruiter...Too bad he couldn't coach...

When he lost Patrick Johnson, he had Florida flag his test score with the NCAA and actually forced him to retake the test...and then blamed it on their "internal compliance" problems...I'm sure it had NOTHING to do with him wanting to enroll last Spring at LSU, did it? Doesn't matter anyway, as the kid's so talented, he's still starting...Nice try there, though...

Oh, and let's talk again about Tim Tebow...He told Jevan Snead-formerly of Texas, now at Ole Miss-that he was recruiting Tim Tebow as a damn linebacker, so he could try to bring in two quarterbacks, just in case. Snead had told him he didn't want to be a part of a two QB class, and Meyer LIED TO HIM about Tebow. Don't ask me...Go ask Jevan Snead...

What about the defensive linemanin 2006...Been suspended for pot all year...Gets magically eligible for the LSU game, and then gets suspended again after the LSU game, ending up being dismissed from the team...

But, he SURE WAS ELIGIBLE for the Tigers!

I could mention Tony Joiner and how "quickly" the Florida Attorney General's office sped through his case and dropped the charges, and how "the towing company didn't want to press charges" (Funny how when you get hundreds of messages threatening your business and your livelihood depends on the University of Florida how things change, huh?)...I wonder if anyone else's had grand theft charges dropped that fast? All in time to get him eligible last year for your big road loss to LSU...

Or what about your boy from this year? Mr. AK-47? Should we even touch on that one?

    How's that for basis?
  • OU_Ron · 1 year ago
I wish you would stop sugar coating everything,,,!
  • Ramblin' Gator · 1 year ago
Yea, you're right TE. LSU is America's cleanest program.
  • TigerEducated · 1 year ago
I tell you what...If Ryan Perrilloux had played for Urban Meyer...

He'd still be playing for Urban Meyer...

    FACT.
  • Ramblin' Gator · 1 year ago
Let's see, Meyer has cut (what?) 5 players from the team so far this year for disciplinary and legal reasons? Ronnie Wilson is on the team, but not playing even though he used to be a starter?

But no, you must be right, TE. Ryan P would be playing for Meyer, despite his disciplinary record AND the presence of Tim Tebow, John Brantley, and Cam Newton. That's a "FACT" because TE says so. Just like Meyer got a gymnastics scholarship for a recruit's girlfriend. Nothing to do with her national merits as a gymnast. It MUST be Meyer's doing 'cause TE says so.
  • TigerEducated · 1 year ago
I'm talking about a player of Perrilloux's caliber...If he were your starting quarterback, RG...I'm not talking about whether or not he could compete with any of the other QB's on your roster...

Way to avoid that forest of a point for the sake of your tree...

You're a more well thought out, reasoned version of BC, today, it seems like...
  • Ramblin' Gator · 1 year ago
Yea, I see where this is going. Your team can't win the big one so let's sling as much mud as possible and see what sticks. The opposing coach is a cheater. The refs are biased. The sun was in my eyes. Blah... blah...blah.

I'll reach into my big box of TE "classics" for my response:

    51 - 21

    Owned.
  • Charlie · 1 year ago
Ramblin' Gator....Understand one fact: Urban Liar has "cut" nobody. Under Urban Liar's watch, the gutters have had more players arrested over the past three years than any other team in the NCAA. Any "cuts" - you can take it to the bank - were mandated by the SEC in an effort to resuscitate their image and reputation. However, Meyer is no different than - in fact he has been a quick study in how to run an outlaw program - Bobby Bowden. Bowden promises recruits they'll play as long as he can bail them out by game time, and Meyer is cut from the same cloth.
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
Thank you. Rambling Gator, you will now have 3 minutes to respond...

  • G8RFAN4LIFE · 1 year ago
Where do you get your facts? From the National Enquirer? Your conjectures are all over the place as if you are a source of truth. As for Urban, why would he want to go to a Big 10 school (although not officially) and play in a weak conference where you have to recruit nationally instead of a better conference with in-state rich talent. The 18-yr olds today don't care about the rich history of yester-year, they were in diapers when Notre Dame held higher esteem. Over the past 10-15 years other schools have changed the landscape.
  • TigerEducated · 1 year ago
Urban isn't an 18 year old...
  • FSU_fan · 1 year ago
I tend to bet this phillosophy will gain more and more traction. The Irish are on the fast track to the place so many other former greats now dwell. When these 18 year olds watch the championship games (BCS Conferences and NC) they want to play for those teams... Who wants to play for long term losers that are national jokes like ND (and my NOLES LATELY LOSING TO BC AND WAKE!!)
  • TampaGator · 1 year ago
Patrick Johnson chose LSU over UF...AFTER and precisely BECAUSE his scores were flagged. 16, 16, then...freak'n 22 ACT!!! How do you NOT look into that??? PJ circulated that BS story preemptively--as soon he was called out, he lashed out. UF probably would have given the guy a chance to prove himself--as they did with John Brown the year before, when they made him sit out as a redshirt--but they wouldn't just pretend in "...there's nothing to see here"....

...ah, but that episode certainly DOES speak volumes of LSU's laughable "adacemic" standards. LSU did sign him--no strings, no conditions....just bad mouth UF, and we won't bat an eye at those scores...

The gymnastic deal with Carl Moore--secondary violation at best. UF was CM's firth choice already. Meyer contacted the g/f, because she didn't think that she was good enough for UF's gymnastics--he suggested she to go ahead and try anyway--nothing to lose. Not necessarily recruiting her--she wasn't in very high demand by others. So she did apply--and UF gymnastics coach independently evalutated her--and independently offered her a scholly. The key here, is that UF was already Carl Moore's first pick. The g/f--was Meyer going above and beyond the call of duty.

Re. Toliver: UF recuriters said LSU doesnt QUALIFY its players--not graduate--and that LSU academics "...were not all that...". They're not. Not even close to UF's. ...and, as evidenced by the Patrick Johnson matter which you so gratuitously shared--they obviously don't qualify their players. They take 'em however they can get 'em.

The DL in '06--Marcus Thomas--was given one more chance by Meyer; yes, in time for LSU game. He promply violated the conditions of his reinstatement, and was canned for good. Not even reinstated for the NC game. How's that on Meyer? Meyer just gave him a 2nd chance...the kid turned around and screwed him, and himself...

Tony Joiner--we've been through this---he was getting his gf's car--you know, with her permission... The charges NEVER should have been filed in the first place...and Meyer showed enough restraint to wait until after the State Atty spoke on the matter (dismissing the case)--before letting him play. He deferred to the authorities....what a crooked asshole, right?

Now I ain't saying Meyer is clean as snow--the Wilson matter in particular, is disgraceful--but he's not nearly as dishonest as you make out. He is conspicous due to his success, which generates envy; and frankly, I think that is your true "basis".

    GO GATORS!!
  • TampaGator · 1 year ago
Dang it to hell....I drafted a reply, and lost the SOB in outerf#$%nspace...

    So here it is, streamlined:

Pat Johnson came out wth that BS AFTER and precisely BECAUSE UF called him out for the ACT scores. 16, 16, and 22!!! How do you NOT???

Here's how--you're LSU. They took him; no worries about the funky scores...

(b/t/w: UF redshirterd a signee after flagging a similar--though not as egregous jump the preceding year--that's what made them a little more alert to the issue, going into this year).

Re. LSU's academics/Toliver: UF's recuriters said LSU doesn't QUALIFY its players--NOT GRADUATE (as you suggeted)...and that LSU's academics are "...not all that...."--they're not...certainly not compared with UF's. See Patrick Johnson matter, for evid. of not "qualifying" a player.

Re. UF's DL--Marcus Thomas--Meyer gave him a second chance--he suspended him again, after violationg conditions of reinstatement--even kept him out of SEC CG and NC games.

Re. Tony Joiner: Meyer deferred to the State Atty. Besides, he never should have been charged to begin with--he was retrieving his gf/s car, at her request, and with permission--not stealing a car.

Re. Jevon Snead--who's to say he isn't lying?

Oh, and Carl Moore's gymnast g/f: he ALWAYS wanted to go to UF, before Meyer ever called the G/f; and then, he simply suggested that apply to UF. UF's gym coach independently evaluated her and offered her shcolly; not Meyer. Minor violation at best.

Bottom line: Meyer isn't clean as now--RWilson in particular is a disgrace--but he's not nearly as dishonest as you make out.

Wishful thinking? This is coming from a Gator writer and he makes pretty clear that it is his hope that he is wrong. It is certainly one guy's opinion, but I don't think I would characterize it as wishful thinking.

He certainly makes a strong case, especially when you consider his background and the opinions of those he solicited.

What could my MOM have to do with anything? I used a conversation to describe why I said what I said...

You defined the word...which I was never setting out to do...I was attempting to...

Let me take a guess at TE's family finances 14 years ago: A junior in high school making $3.30 minimum wage at the local Hardees, driving his first car, a 1985 Prelude , who's wheel wells were permanently stained in clay from driving on every country road in the parish with his main squeeze riding shotgun.

If mama had to kick in a little at Christmas to buy a Tommy Hodgsen jersey, where's the hurt?

  • Ramblin' Gator · 1 year ago
I wouldn't necessarily believe anything written by sports writers in the print media, or most anything I read in print media, ever again.

Print media is on its death bed. Sports writers (and others) are doing everything they can to create artifical controversy and increase readership. These guys are writing in the interest of self-aggrandizement and self-preservation.

    Here's another example...

President-elect Obama speaks in favor of an NCAA football playoff system and the sports writers gang-tackle him. Why? Because the BCS system benefits the sports writers. All the controversy and second guessing generates interest in ther rants. A playoff would remove most of the controversy (history and bowl money aside).
  • USC1801 · 1 year ago
    Kevin:

Perhaps. Whether it's a Gator writer or Gamecock writer makes no difference. It's all really directed at the NDame situation, and thus the disgruntled NDame fan base. Ergo, he is writing for the wishful thinking NDame fan.

And it IS wishful thinking on their part if they believe Weis is going to be dropped any time soon. There is just too much money and reputation (AD) at stake.

As to his "strong case," it is purely speculative. That means there are no facts to substantiate his claims. He's trying to connect the dots and is grasping at straws.

    But I've been wrong before.
  • LSULIFER · 1 year ago
As an LSU Tiger former player and fan. Please Notre Dame get Urban Meyer out of the SEC. Send Charlie Weis down to Florida, therefore they will become a conference doormat again, just like they used to be before Spurrier.
  • FSU_fan · 1 year ago
Yeah I'm kinda wishing it too.
  • cleartheair · 1 year ago
Latest I've heard from a few Irish grads is that the real guy they want is Nick Saban. And since Saban has no buy out clause, and has jilted all the teams he has coached in the past, why stop now? National TV broadcasts, national recruiting, etc. Since the Chicago Tribune has put out word that Notre Dame is negotiating a buy out with Charlie Weiss, it wouldn't surprise me if Notre Dame came up with the bucks.
  • USC1801 · 1 year ago
Like Urby Meyer, Saban's wife, Terry, won't let Nicholas leave Bama.  Who do you think really made the decision to leave the Dolphins?  Don't you remember?  It was "I'm not leaving the Dolphins" one day, and the next "Hello Bama."  Only a women's perogative to change her mind could explain that scenario!!  LOL!
  • lodger · 1 year ago
Like the writer says (twice), "things change". ND is not the center of the universe anymore. FLA has better weather, hotter girls, and has proven it can win NC's now!! And it was successful before Meyer.
Of course ND would be much better under Meyer, but it won't be as easy as at FLA.

Nicole Meyer said she chose Georgia Tech because she wanted to remain in the southeast and near her family. If Urban is planning on ditching Gainesville, he didn't tell his own daughter.
  • deathvalley56 · 1 year ago
R.G., HAPPY WIFE (or CHILD(REN), but doesn't rhyme with LIFE) ........ HAPPY LIFE, I agree ........ and that definitely also goes for the child(ren). I'll give ya an example, too. When Nick Saban wanted to pack up and leave Baton Rouge for Miami, both his wife and his kids didn't won't to leave. But, I guess, Miami's money offer must have spoken louder than his wife's and children's wants, and or, needs. The kids just didn't want to keep movin' and going to new schools all the time ....... and Mrs.Saban said that she just loved Baton Rouge and she loved the people here and the fans were so appreciative of what he had done since coming here (B.R.); and that L.S.U.'s fans are the best fans in the world; and she just loved Baton Rouge and L.S.U. I'm sure Nick was makin' a very comfortable livin' before the Miami offer. In my opinion, my wife and children would come 1st, ahead of bettering myself (could be construed as selfish, if not distinctly for my wife and kids, that is ........ If the decision was only or mostly to better his family, that would be a different story. Nonetheless, He was probably comfortable enough for life with his income like it was. My family would've come 1st anyway. Nonetheless, if this concerning Meyer is true, he had better do the respectable thing and discuss this with Nicole and his WHOLE FAMILY. That's my view point anyway.

But, as far as I'm concerned, I wouldn't mind him leaving for Notre Dame. Maybe, they won't whup up on us again like they did this year anymore (In the tune of 51-21). ........... hehehehehehehehe .............. damn!!! ............ They might even get Steve Spurrier back ...... and that's bad news too ........ for us and everyone!!!

If Meyer's wife picked Notre Dame, that's very important ......... remember this always .......... "Happy Wife ......... Happy life" The wife's decision rules even over the kids. But, I would sit down and discuss with them what we've decided to do so the children (they, he, or she) can prepare for their new home, and or, living arrangement.
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
Urban picked Notre Dame, Ohio State and Michigan.

    Shelly picked Florida.

That much is clear. Oh, that and he is at FLorida.
  • deathvalley56 · 1 year ago
BP, Oh.......I'm sorry.........I shouldve read the article then, I guess, dog gone it! ....... I was just going by what a few others had said on their posts......probably mostly Florida fans. Ya see; ya know I'm an L.S.U. Fan, right? Duh.......... I said that here just because I'm gonna try to make a point. Saban chose leaving B.R. to go to the more lucrative and prestigious job of the Pro MIami Dolphins; right? And his wife and kids wanted to stay in B.R. After Michigan State, then moving to Baton Rouge, then moving to Miami, and who knows wherever else they were gonna move (Ultimately, Alabama and who knows? Wherever else he or they might or will move), they didn't want to keep changing schools all the time and havin' to meet new friends. That COULD BE a real bummer ..... if ya really think about it. They wanted to stay put in Baton Rouge. But, the most important thing is that HIS WIFE wanted to stay in Baton Rouge, a city and fan base she had grown to really love and care about. But, for the money, being a pro head coach, and just a great opportunity to better himself, he made the jump to N.F.L. If I was him and I was makin' plent of bucks to allow his family to live very comfortably ..... and I think they could (live comfortably) and just winning the National Title at L.S.U. that it's been since 1958 that they've won won, I think he should've listened to his wife. Happy wife ............ happy life. On the other hand, if she wanted to move to Miami too, I would've done what she wanted ..... and I'm not talkin' about being a doormat. I'm talkin' 1st about being a good husband, where there's no discord. I mean it .... if your wife is happy, things will be much better for the husband. You can listen from experience. I've been there.

Now, as for Shelly, if I was Urban, I wouldn't go to Notre Dame (Where he's rumored to be going, of course), Ohio State, Michigan. Anywhere University, or any team in the N.F.L., for that matter ....... even though coaching one of the best teams (wouldn't happen, of course!!!!!!!) in the N.F.L. might cross my mind. ....... Just kidding, his wife should be the foremost opinion and advisor in his life. I say this from a viewpoint that, he should probably listen to his wife this time. Nonetheless, it really depends on just how bad Shelley wants to stay at Florida. If she really deep in her heart wants to stay ..... stay Urban!!! That's my advice. Listen to your wife.

From an L.S.U. fan's viewpoint, however, I'll go help him pack. Just maybe they won't get anyone (not very likely though, they're Florida) nearly as successful that could put a whippin' on us every once in a while like they did this year (51-21). Well ..... anyway, I bet Spurrier would probably be back and we'll just be in the same boat with them as we have been in........ even though Florida doesn't have a very BIG lead over us in our overall series with L.S.U.. They've only won ....... it seems like 4 or 5 more games in head to head competition over L.S.U.. But, we NEVER hardly ever beat a Spurrier coached Florida team, it seems like. I believe during his tenure at Florida ..... that's when they took their lead in wins against us, I believe.

Go to Notre Dame, Urban ....... from an L.S.U. fan's prosprctive......... Stay in Florida, Urban ...... from a happy husband's life's prospective. ...........But, no matter what they'll probably get someone to replace him, if not Spurrier, that'll be very difficult for everyone to beat, including us (L.S.U.) that's for sure. Afterall, this is the S.E.C. ............ the powerhouse conference in all of college football.
  • Zac · 1 year ago
Well, since Tressel is likely going no where, and Rodriguez has his other "dream job" tied up, likely for at least 4 more years, and since Miles will likely replace Rodriguez, ND is still the only place left to harbor Meyer. In other words, I'll believe it when I see it.
  • PittsburghTiger · 1 year ago
I just don't see that Notre Dame is the greatest job in coaching. I know they have the history and the tradition. BUT every school has its share of those things. I really doubt that too many people in Alabama, Georgia, Texas, Florida, Cali, Oklahoma, Ohio, Michigan, etc. really care all that much about Notre Dame.

The 85 scholarship limit has made the playing field so even that there really are no "top" jobs. Notre Dame can't say to a kid that they are on TV each week, because just about everyone else is too.

I agree that Notre dame was the top coaching job but I don't see it anymore.
  • USC1801 · 1 year ago
Please add South Carolina to your list of people who really could care less about NDame.

But I disagree with you on NDame not being a top coaching job. I can understand the misconception and disconnect between NDames lack of success and what you might consider a top position. However, if it is true about the Gator bowl offering NDame a shot at playing in Jan., then you have a prime example of how much market share NDame still commands. And that type of exposure and status makes the job a hot prospect. Whether we agree with it or or not, tradition and history make good copy, and the media has an enormous amount of power when it comes to promotion.

No, I said it was not THE top job. Notre Dame is a great job. But there are other great jobs out there. Just like Bear stayed at Alabama and Paterno stayed at PSU, the grass is not always greener at some other place.

Would a guy like Bear or Paterno have been successful in the NFL? Probably, but not to the extent they were at their schools. Same with Dean Smith. Some guys fit in certain places.

If I could here are the schools where I would love to coach; Auburn, Pitt, Texas and UNC. I could throw in a couple others but I think just because some writer says a school is a better job, that doesn't make it so.

I think Meyer would be nuts to leave Florida.
  • TampaGator · 1 year ago
Obviously I hope Coach Meyer sticks around, but if his heart is with Notre Dame, I'll remain eternally grateful for the '06 NC he was instrumental in bringing to Gator Nation, the job he's done, the talent he's attracted, the H-man he helped Tebow earn (by allowing TT to go nuts....), etc. No ill will; we'd rebound, and as with Steve Spurrier, Ron Zook, Bob Stoops, Emmitt Smith, Danny Wuerfel, Jack Youngblood, Cris Collinsworth, Wilbur Marshall, Erict Rhett, Jevon Kearse, Fred Taylor...and so many other greats who've contributed to our Gator FB program--I'd wish him well.

...but I ain't closing the book on the Urban Meyer yet; not until it's ever finito...

Can't edit, so I'll have to supplement my post above: Ok, Zooker' ain't exactly great, but...we do wish him well...

Ahh the old Zooker. The only man I know that started his own frat with a NCAA football squad. I wonder if he hazed them....

I guess closed practices were for the elephant walk.

Recruiting and winning at ND is much easier, The SEC is tough.

"Recruiting and winning at ND is much easier..."

Except when it comes to winning bowl games, and playing Syracuse, apparently.
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
Although ND is a more coveted position in the grand scheme of things than Florida, especially to a guy from the midwest, you have to wonder why he would want to leave a Florida program that's headed in the right direction and is slap dab in the middle of fertile recruiting grounds and go take up a ND team that can't get out of neutral.

Just speculating, but if the position at UF became available, I DON'T think that Spurrier would go back home...
  • Regan · 1 year ago
No chance. Spurrier is burnt out.
  • USC1801 · 1 year ago
I'll take a "burnt-out" Spurrier over both the coaches who represented the two orange emblems you flash. Anyday! They were truly burnt out. Spurrier may not have the talent like he did at Florida but he is far from being a Lou Holtz, who really was washed up. You just don't appreciate the amount of work it takes to recruit at South Carolina and build a program up from the ground. Give him time.
  • USC1801 · 1 year ago
But I do agree that Spurrier is not leaving USC. Not for Tennessee. Not for Florida. And you can take this to the bank. . NOT FOR NDAME!!! ;)
  • Regan · 1 year ago
I wasn't knocking Spurrier, USC1801, he's a heck of a coach. I just meant that I believe that one way or another, Carolina will be his last coaching job.

I don't see him leaving to go anywhere - I just think he's burnt out of all the coaching-soap-opera stuff, he just wants to do his thing where he's at or not at all. Sorry for not stating it well.

As far as recruiting at SCAR, I'm not sure how long it takes. The OBC has gone 7-5, 8-5, 6-6 and no better than 9-4 in his first four years. He lost 5 straight last year for the first time in his career, and has lost to Vandy 2 years in a row.

Given the coaching talent level in the SEC nowadays with Richt, Meyer, Saban, etc., I just don't see things coming together for him to make a huge run - I think it would have happened already.

We all know what he's capable of, though, so who knows...
  • USC1801 · 1 year ago
My apology, too, for reading into what you wrote.

As to recruiting, Spurrier is gradually improving the quality of players at USC. I think it was two years ago he had the #5 recruiting class in the nation, and this year they have the potential to pick up some good prospects at needy positions, as well as improve their overall rating. His choice of DC seems to be paying off as well, so I'm hopeful he can still get the job done. At the very least, he is settng the stage for USC to move to the next level.
  • Regan · 1 year ago
No need for snippiness, USC1801, I think we are actually in agreement.

I remember the '90's vividly, and Spurrier can go 0-48 in the next 4 years and everyone will still be scared of him. He's an awesome coach and he WILL continue to improve the Gamecocks each year.

My latter point was that the rest of the SEC seems to be upgrading each year as well, so I'm not sure how much better it will get.

I am one of the exceptionally few Clemson fans who has no problem with Carolina getting better because I would LOVE to see the day when the Clemson-Carolina Rivalry means as much to the national stage as the Texas-Oklahoma Rivalry.

So long as they lose to Clemson and Tennessee each year, I would love for Carolina to go 10-2 any time they want. :)

Hey, CD, sorry about the pounding GA Tech put on your Canes. Don't lose heart; there's still tons of potential there.
  • Big B · 1 year ago
Never going to happen. I have the definitive word on this subject. I have never won a lottery, and I am not lucky enough for Urban Meyer to take this juggernaut out of my beloved SEC East. That said, if you are a UF alum, you should be completely fine with him leaving as BigB's luck is such that anyone who replaced Meyer would ultimately be better, and would dishout even worse beatings, to my beloved Bulldogs.

Best of luck in the SEC Championship. Maybe I can cozy up to the notion that we only lost two games, one of whom is the MNC and the other lost only to the MNC. That makes us number three, right? Back to my koolaid...

5PM PST, next Saturday, start praying now to your Touchdown Jesus, because that CARDINAL & GOLD train that's coming around the corner is going to put you guys in the ground. Let's go half hundred, what do you think???
  • Tom Grzesik · 1 year ago
Family considerations should always trump self serving career desions. I am an ND fan and felt betrayed when coach Meyer turned down the ND job. After futher research, I understand his reseasons, and respect his decision. He has proven on a regional and national level that he can win. This accomplishment occured at a reginal universities. ND cuts across the entie USA!!! Coach Myer is probably the best college coach in the country.
The point is that Coach Meyer will coach where his heart leads and where his family feels comfortable.
  • ND Fan · 1 year ago
at this point i don't care who coach's ND as long as they get ride of Wies
  • Mike · 1 year ago
Urban will be ND's next coach. The two main reasons he picked Florida were family and cupboard. Neither of these two are an issue anymore. ND's recruiting classes have been fantastic and Urbans family is not an issue like it once was.

December to January should be interesting
  • Buddy Martin · 1 year ago
Really, folks, you have taken an article written by a friend of mine who extrapolated a few facts from my book, "Urban's Way," added some of his own theory and produced that Meyer is leaving for Notre Dame. No, that isn' t to happen -- not now, maybe never. It's pure speculation and everything I know leads me to believe that Urban plans to finish this five years of his contract and then make an evaluation of his life -- not just his coaching career. This has all been skewed by opinion which has somehow morphed into fact. I assure you that if Charlie Weis gets fired or quit, ND will have to go shopping somewhere else for a coach.
  • Kevin @ Fanblogs · 1 year ago
No one outside the Meyer family can say for certain. Everyone else - you, me, and the masses - is just speculating.
  • colts08 · 1 year ago
If you look at the Charlie situation closely you realize that this guy has no charisma, he's not the "model" coach that ND was looking for. There are alot of other issues that come into play I believe. Coaches like Urban Meyer are bigger than life at schools like Florida. I dont think that existence could happen at Notre Dame. Think about why Lou Holtz left. This guy did everything asked of him. Was exciting to watch and they still ran him out of town. Why? Because he was bigger than life and the brass at ND couldnt let that happen. Yes Charles needs to go. He is not the right guy for this job, but who is? Until ND makes a decision to allow the coach to become the recruiting magnet they need instead of pretending to offer whatever they think they have there at ND. For gods sake its a NFL player production line. Let it happen. The problem is internal not necessarily with the team. Let a coach come in and run things the right way, have the priests back away. Run it like the powerhouse it needs to be!
  • Greg · 1 year ago
Notre Dame should get rid of Charile Weis. What were they thinking? How can a slob like that be a model for college athetes. Urban Meyer, however, should have NO interest in the job.
  • lanky21 · 1 year ago
Sorry Urban Myer is not coming to Notre Dame... Now I am a HUGE ND fan, but I am not dumb either. This Charlie Weis mess was created by ND themselves. The only reason they fired Willingham was because they thought they could lure Urban Myer out of Utah, but he played them by choosing Florida over ND.

Why would he leave one of the 3 football hotbed in America to go ND? It will be harder to recuit here then in Fla where he has all kinds of talent at his disposal. Plus Florida is a lock to win a National Championship EVERY year.

Now I do want to see my team get back on top and watch all the haters keep hating on them, but I am realistic and know that Urban Meyer will go to Notre Dame when hell freezes over LOL!!!
  • 1Tomcat · 1 year ago
Hey lanky21 All yall got to do is beat USC and Weis will be there for all long time,
    They oughta hire Dennis Francione

I am a huge Gator fan, and if we are able to win a very difficult 2009 with everyone gunning for us.... It must be said that this period is a dynasty for the Florida Gators.

I think that Urbans son is either in 6th grade or going into 6th grade and LOVES his school and his friends. For this reason only, I believe that Urban has either 6 or 7 years left at Florida.

This is standard procedure for ALL Florida Coaches. They only last around 10 or 12 years. The Job is just too demanding..... and it gets easier to start over somewhere else.

Urban will leave after his son graduates highschool and moves on to college. He may take some time off after a decade of coaching the most talented program in the country up to its potential before attempting to reinvigorate a program in decay.

One word of caution. Notre Dame has a track record of hiring the biggest name on the block rather than an up-and-comer, and rarely benefits from it.

When Notre Dame stole Coach Devine from Missouri, they expected the word from him, and he produced the 1979 National Champions with Joe Montana, but it wasnt enough for Notre Dame fans. When Devine left, he regretted ever going to Notre Dame. Although Lou Holts does not regret coaching Notre Dame, Much the opposite, he was thrown out of town because he only won one NC in 1989.

Notre Dames biggest problem is recuriting. You can have the best coaching brand name in the country.... but is he going to be able to bring All-American Defensive Ends, Line-backers, running backs, and Wide-Recievers/ kick returners to the program. The best highschool recruits in the country dont have a prayer of getting in or staying in Notre Dame Academically.
